  • My father and I converted my 2017 2500 Dodge Ram Promaster in 8 weeks working only on weekends. 3 200 watt solar panels, 400amh batteries, 60amp solar charge controller, 2000 watt inverter.
    In beginning of June of 2018 I'll be releasing a 5 phase van conversion breakdown piece by piece. Each phase will cover a different part of the van build process. It will show in detail what I did and also give other options so if you want to have you're own diy van/camper then you will have a better understanding what to do. I also put out a VanLife Vlog every Thursday!

      Reginald Dove sorry it took me so long to reply as I didn’t see this message. WiFi I use 2 hotspots (phone and jetpack). Laying the panels was just a long process but not too bad. Yes they do lay over the roof ribs but I put them down with Sikaflex which is really strong and waterproof. Just need to make sure you fill everything in so no air can get under them

    Nice job. Over time, those glue-on solar panels are going to become damaged or destroyed from heat that the roof absorbs. Put them on a rack slightly above the roof.

      BTW Jarrod, I wanted to say how lucky you are to have a healthy dad with the skills and the love and desire to help and support you. And a brother, too. There's no wealth comparable.
      As far as the issue with heat and exposure of the solar panels, that was one of the reasons I've been thinking about getting one of those solar panel suitcases. When I'm driving I'm getting that thing which its name escapes me so the engine will charge the batteries, then when I park to stay somewhere I can park in the shade and put the panels where its sunny. The other advantage is them not being on the roof being subject to more weather elements and road debris, but also make me more stealth and don't advertise to potential thieves. Also fewer holes in the roof although the fan creates one. I also LOVE the idea of a Cub wood stove, speaking of another need for a hole in the roof. I've watched a few videos of people who have them. Has anyone else considered them or have positive or negative opinions of them ? Inverter...that was the word I wanted earlier.

    Your van is probably one of the best I've seen and I've seen alot lol!! You have a great eye for design and the ceiling idea and the vintage aqua stained cabinets I am so stealing lol!!! Oh but since I'm a female..I would need some softness somewhere. In the cushions, soft white sheers framing the bed, windows and entrance to the cab area but other than that....WOW!!! Love it!!!

      Jarrod Tocci oh please don't. These days every one has the exact same build. To find someone that actually has taste for design is refreshing since these are your homes 😊 They should all represent the people that live in them and not look like everyone else's.
      But if you change them??? I will take them. Lol!! Have a great weekend 😁

    • @dennismattson8383
      @dennismattson8383 6 років тому +3

      YES.. . I agree.. Great sense of STYLE.. "Design-wise" with your choice of the quality materials, and colors, the end results are Absolutely Stunning... FAR separated from the typical bland and boring .. The Woods.. Shiplap....and THAT AQUA !!! just POPS, and takes it over the edge...
      It is MY Favorite, and THEE most awesomest part.. It's what kept me watching .. DO NOT get rid of the Aqua !!!!... Then again.. it is not MY van.. There is no right, there is no wrong,... everyone has their own way....
      1-There are many aspects from different videos I've watched that I would incorporate into a build.. While your style wins first place... I myself would alter it with infusions of Mahogany/Cherry wood tones.. grays, charcoal / black counter / tabletop ... my favorite other ideas are from the following.. and my own? a 50"-60" big screen tv that swings down/swings out, or retracts down into counter, that would also double as a big ass computer monitor.. =))) lh3.googleusercontent.com/ValWwdS2vrLnntfBr5wUtMtXWLOUmn7z-hziOmD7EAuwRxTBa5Vr1DkSZmSWCz3Mr751Cw=s152
      2- Love the back kitchen, storage, shower/ toilet, couch/bed/table looking out the side doors, solar panels on extension cables, etc in this one.. "ULTIMATE 4X4 SPRINTER VAN CONVERSION" by Tiny House Listings
      3- Love the overall potential, to create a larger bath, more storage, etc.. using the size this mini bus, It's very basic.. could do SO much more with it, but love its portable stove/oven, sink made from a bussers pan, and it's woodstove is beyond awesome.. - "Woman Builds Simple Tiny House out of a Bus for Stealth Camping" by Forrest Stevens...

    Great interior build. Wondering how well your sound and blackout precautions work.
    I'd add a couple of worker's high visibility vests draped on the front seats and maybe a D-ring binder on the dash with "Field Operations Manual" printed on it.
    Other simple camo is to deploy some cones when parked in an (sub)urban setting and adding some official looking things to the exterior such as vehicle fleet number and a "How's My Driving" sticker and whatnot.

      Glad to help - I know someone who did a conversion on a surveillance van used by the Feds that he was lucky enough to pick up cheap on govt. auction. He went as far as to repaint it to look very corporate - put something along the lines of "24/7 Service Unit" or "Field Response Service Unit" on it with a fake 1-888 #.
      It was already super insulated and noise shielded so he did not have much to add there. He had to make some adjustments to ensure no light/sound would leak from the rear to the front seats and he made some mods to accommodate and silence a small AC unit that quietly vents under the truck
      Was able to take advantage of some of the preexisting architecture to subtly place micro cameras covering the rear, sides and front seat area so he could always pull up his laptop and see who was around the vehicle.
      The closest he says he has come to trouble was a rent-a-cop patrol in a strip mall that shown a light into the driver's side...saw the vests and manual he placed up front (and a hard hat on the passenger seat) and went on his way.

    Very well thought out and executed. Being a contractor and in the marine industry I caution you of the heat your roof will put out and eventually damage your solar panels; creating a gap between them and roof would resolve that issue.
    Also you have potential for disaster around the water pump area as it isn't moisture resistant.

    • @JarrodTocci
      @JarrodTocci  6 років тому

      Gordon C thanks. Those type of solar panels are designed to sit flat to the surface. I will do some reinforcements to the water pump area though. Thanks for pointing it out

    I have looked at a lot of conversions, this build is definitely my favourite, without a doubt - great job man!, not only every feature I would want but I also like your design choices....A shower and a toilet is a must for me.....I see so many builds that neglect these two features because they like to cook and wanted more counter space? I wonder where they plan on evacuating that big meal at midnight when parked on some side street in suburbia...someone's front lawn? To build an off-grid vehicle and not have a place to wash up and do your nasty business is completely illogical and counter-intuitive......Also, don't forget, all you single guys and gals, unless you plan on remaining celibate for the rest of your life, again a shower is a must for before and after you get busy...I know I appreciate my girlfriend's cleanliness and vice versa - this will not change when you are on the road and alone - Anyway, super build man - wish you plenty of wonderful memories of all kinds, carnal and travel!

    Another way to build a shower that's really easy is to get a pump up bug sprayer one of those 5-gallon jobs and cut the wand off of the end and replace it with a vegetable sprayer like you use on the kitchen sink and paint the container black just leave it out in the sun all day then when it's time to take a shower Pump It Up get wet soap up and rinse off they work real good like an off-grid cabins and doesn't require any voltage like a 12 volt water pump

      Van's are small.
      Building a shower with water storage, heater, pump and grey holding seems a lot (space & effort).
      Emergency bathroom tucked away, I can understand.
      Not a shower stall.
      I'm 6 1 so SIDE2SIDE bed wont work.
      I prefer a side mounted Murphy bed with storage bench/work table.
      Mini mini kitchen.
      TV with Xbox.
      Hot redhead.
      And a dog.

    Not bad, congrats and enjoy. I saw an ambulance (box) converted that was already insulated, had a sink, A.C./heat, generator and wiring with batteries, heavy duty alternator, lights, siren, network hookups (in cab), ect.... All they had to do is design the floor plan to utilize the existing systems (add solar) and they were done. ;-)

    Very nice work! I'm just finishing my Sprinter van now. While I was watching you do the floor and ceiling I was thinking looks good, but wouldn't have worked for me. I'm 6'1" and even with being very conscious of the floor thickness and ceiling thickness with shoes on I feel the recessed lights when I walk under them. :( I'm in NJ and the floor is really been cold, I wish I had that foam subfloor now, though I plan to be in 75° most the time.
    I wonder if you really thought out the need for a shower, it really takes up lots of space for the shower itself but also for the water tankage, (potable and grey), hot water heater. A gym membership might have been a better choice. Your choice of water fillers on the inside is the correct one, in my opinion, the world is full of A**holes the might pee in your water or put drugs in it.
    Yours is one of, if not the best build out that I've seen. Good luck, I hope you enjoy it.

    • @JarrodTocci
      @JarrodTocci  6 років тому +1

      Richard Border thank you! And I do agree with the gym membership as I do have one and use it everyday. My shower honestly is used more for storage than taking a shower but having it there is more of a sense of security I guess, like just in case kinda thing. Also if I’m traveling and in the middle of no where. I plan on doing a video of the pros and cons of having one.

    Hey there .. New subscriber here ... With over 26 years of finish Carpentry experience ...
    I just had to say that you & your father did an AWESOME job with the van build :) :) ... Great detail, and SMART layout of valuable space !!! Looks fantastic sir !!!!
    The one concern was how much "weight" was added to the van, at the end of your build .. ??
    You spared NO expense in quality materials, but that also added a LOT of pounds to the finished product .... (just my own opinion ) !!
    Absolutely a QUALITY finish :) :) :) :)

    • @JarrodTocci
      @JarrodTocci  6 років тому +2

      Rick S. Thank you as it means a lot coming from a carpenter. These vans can handle the weight for sure. I don’t even want to give a estimate but if I really had to guess maybe 1200 pounds and I don’t even think it’s that much. Also I drove the van empty for a while and after the build it felt better to drive for some reason. Like more smooth

    • @JarrodTocci
      @JarrodTocci  6 років тому +5

      So I spoke more with my father about weight and my estimate was way off. He seems to think it's closer to 600-700lbs. In the video I do with pricing I'll also do the weight of products and give a accurate estimate of total weight of materials.

    I watched your videos 3 times now. I do have a few questions. How do you get your mails? How much is insurance and gas?

    • @JarrodTocci
      @JarrodTocci  6 років тому +2

      kit p for mail I set up a mailbox at a UPS Store. When you get one from a store it comes as a address and not a P.O. box. These’s another way that you can set up though the post office to have mail go where ever you are. For insurance I pay for commercial because it’s a commercial vehicle so it’s $190 a month. I’m switch to RV insurance to hopefully lower that cost. For gas I get about 15/16mpg and to fill the tank it cost roughly $50-60 and that’s in LA and gas prices are about $3.10-3.60 a gallon. I believe it’s a bigger tank then a normal car too

    There are some who would say this is TOO luxurious. But I say, if your'e making the commitment to spending a lot of time in the van, having those "luxuries" makes it bearable. A proper bathroom, a dedicated cooking area, a place to sit and eat/work. I've seen some of the CheapRVLiving videos showing women who have been living in cars and little vans. They would call your build palatial. They wash themselves from a bowl, use a bucket and bag system for a toilet. Their beds are narrow benches. It seems the more spartan their circumstances, the prouder they are.
    Mind you, some of these ladies have no money. They are trying to exist on less than $800.00 a month. They are on disability, recovering from abusive situations, badly divorced, out of work.
    Some of them are fine. There's one video where the lady lives out of a 4x4, because she likes to travel cheaply. She has property, a home. She just has wanderlust.
    But if you can create a nice traveling home, I say go for it.

    • @JarrodTocci
      @JarrodTocci  6 років тому +5

      Sandra Nelson wow some situations I was aware of but honestly I didn’t know about a lot of them. Personally I want to inspire, educate, assist in any way I can. Thank you for sharing and as my subscribers grow this is a issue I want to address because no one wants to see people struggle. Sure I spent a lot of money on my build but I also know how to cut corners when it comes to building and design. I also worked 2 full time jobs for almost a year just to afford this project. So again thank you for your kind words and liking/enjoying my video!!

    Another thing you did, which I wouldn't have thought of, was the dark ceiling. The other builds I've seen that are going for the modern sleek look made their ceilings white to make it look bigger; which is what I would have assumed too; but now that I'm looking at that dark wood (which looks so great with the fabulous blue cabs, lol), I'm remembering reading that interior designers - against conventional wisdom - say a dark ceiling makes it recede, while a white ceiling actually attracts the eye and has a lowering effect. Anyway it's really cool. Hats off to you and your pop.
