The song is about drug addiction. Her friend was deeply in the throes of heavy drug addiction. Fortunately, the friend in question conquered the habit.
Yeah Fergie was in Kids Incorporated, was kinda young and not assured of her vocal abilities and the older and much more confident Martika was running the floor with her every time.
Gorgeous song and gorgeous voice! She wrote this song about a friend who was going through a cocaine addiction. This was the 3rd song she ever wrote. Check out K's Choice Not an Addict
K's choice is an amazing artist/band , they focus on relating to ppl with common everyday issues that ppl cast-out because of what society says one must be like ....EVERYTHING FOR FREE.... CHECK IT OUT
She gets called a one-hit wonder, for this song that went to number 1 for two weeks, but she had several other top 40 hits as well in the 80s. Before she went solo as a musician, she was on an 80s show called Kids Incorporated that was on the Disney Channel, sort of a like the Mickey Mouse Club before the 90s MMC of Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and other stars. It gave her a built in audience of fans like myself. Kids Inc launced a lot of stars besides Martika, including Fergie, Mario Lopez, and Jennifer Love Hewitt.
Her good friend was intensely addicted to cocaine like so many in the eighties. So many were falling to the way side, so she correlated it to all the toy soldiers falling down, like when you were a child playing.
Cocaine addiction is once again killing a lot of people in Australia. I guess the price must have gone down, because it was a 'rich person's' drug for a while.
What a special channel where there is so much love and peace here.I mean 456 likes and ZERO dislikes....Dont know of another channel where this happens so often. This guy is always such a happy loving inspiring dude and I'm a 47 yr old guy.

I understood back then what the song was about but I'm glad her friend beat their addiction and went on to live a life .
Love Thy Will Be Done is an absolutely spellbinding song. Her best song and one of the Purple One's hidden gems. Martika's Kitchen is an often derided song but once you've heard it, you'll never forget it I assure you.
It's always fun to watch that lightbulb go off when you get the meaning of a song. Like this switch. You had a similar reaction with "I Don't Like Mondays."
I actually remember seeing her in the show "Kids Incorporated" and having had a massive crush on her back in those days and the fact that the show originally aired in syndication it aired on WCOV Channel 20 in Montgomery Alabama and I had wanted to watch the show so badly that I'd literally stayed up all night on Friday night just so I'd be able to watch "Kids Incorporated" at 6AM on Saturday morning because of the fact that I didn't get up that early during the week, let alone on a Saturday and I didn't even have a working VCR Suffice to say, all of my friends and family thought I'd lost my marbles because of this
Literally my only memory of this show is her singing "I'm Walking on Sunshine" after being released from the hospital for some reason. (I could swear she was walking on a big ball that was supposed to be the sun...) I remember nothing else from this show.
@@MavenCree she also sang covers of other artists songs, such as: Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid by Hall And Oates Much Too Late For Goodbyes by Julian Lennon And Things Can Only Get Better by Howard Jones
Martika wrote the song about a friend who was battling a cocaine addiction. That’s where the line “How could I be so blind to this addiction, one falling star, the next one’s gonna be me” fits in to the lyrics. By the way, Martika’s friend conquered their cocaine addiction in an interview she did later.
@@BillGraper Actually with the opening line I think that she was the addict that got her friend addicted ... this is just my guess based on the opening "It wasn't my intention to mislead you, it never should have been this way, what can I say ... It's true I did extend the invitation ....." and with the line "If I don't stop, the next one's gonna be me." makes me think they both were addicts and that she introduced the drugs to her friend. But of course all songs can be left up to interpretation.
Great song and she has a lovely voice. Check out her classic 'Love, Thy Will Be Done' which she co-wrote with Prince....about her belief in God and which she describes as a hymn

Great reaction Jay! This song reminds me of my senior year of high school/first summer session of college. I’ve always thought this was a deep song. I love Martika’s voice and the music is great. Yes, what a great metaphor! Thank Jay!!
This hits hard... I’ve had family who struggled with addiction, and they were able to overcome it. However, this past week I lost a friend to a drug addiction. The lyrics in this song are powerful, and I think the metaphor is a strong one... especially “never win, but the battle wages on...” addiction in a nutshell. Even if you overcome, the thoughts of fulfilling that addiction are always in the back of your mind. It really is a war!
I still love this song so much. Another artist and song that would fit nicely between this and Enya is a singer named Basia, who had a huge hit with Time and Tide.
"Cruising for Bruising" and "New day for you". Not many people bring up Basia, but she could sing. I've been suggesting her to every channel for over a year now.
Just wanted to say that she was on Kids, Inc. and that this song is about a friend of hers that had a drug addiction. I didn’t think enough people had said these things already.
It's been a long time since I've heard this song. I never realized how similar it sounds to some Belinda Carlisle's songs, like Circle In The Sand. This song was definitely very 80s.

It's not until we're older that we do a deep dive into the songs meaning. For example, "Paradise" by Phil Collins ...
