All those years ago I believed she was singing about a relationship gone wrong. Not long ago I discovered she wrote the song about a friend battling a cocaine addiction. Pay attention to the lyrics. She's singing about some heavy stuff.
Martika recorded her 1st album, but was hesitant on including this song, as it may look like a diversion from other songs on the album. But, luckily for us, her producer persuaded her it was worth it! He had sense then! A very powerful song about a heavy subject and boy, did she give her all in this!! The chorus starts like loud bangs making such impact. Kind of trying to wake people up to listen to an important message! And that long crying/wailing note almost like a child in distress, near the end of the song, is so amazing, haunting, yet beautiful, it always brings tears to my eyes. She lived through a bad experience, drugs, her friend seemingly had it worse but survived, but lost her friend because of it. The emotions she relives are very evident in this song!
I was always haunted by Martika's beauty. She looked like the type you'd be the best of freinds with and do anything for while going through hardships while dealing with drugs. She wrote this song for a friend she lost from drug use. The song itself is hauntingly sad but beautiful.
For me, this song is about battling depression/mental illness and the unhealthy methods used to cope to the point they become addiction. I always imagine a Civil War battle when I hear this as a metaphor for you and your problem fighting it out back and forth like musket vollies from the battle lines.

This song is about drug addiction. A young Fergie is in the video. They both were on the 80's hit kids show KIDZ Incorporated which I watched religiously and wanted to be on the show lol. I got a cassette copy from a pen pal in Japan. Before the internet and social media we had pen pals and ordered through catalogues. Anyhow she recorded this song in Japanese and in Spanish too. Take a listen. I learned the Japanese version phonetically because I want3ed to impress my friends who loved the song and had no idea it was available in a different language. By the way, Martika is Latina.

After that.. Its been everything. I listen for the words and meaning and not by artist but i have lists in my head... Lol
