Camry Idle Air Control Valve Cleaning

- This is my Father's 1999 Toyota Camry with the 3.0 liter V6 (1MZ-FE) engine. About every three years, the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve always gets clogged up causing the car to keep stalling when cold started unless the accelerator was depressed while the engine warms up.
It's expensive to replace (someone quoted my dad $300) but I read that a shot of carburetor cleaner down the hole usually takes care of the problem.
13 years later, you're still helping people out. Thank you sir.
A previous poster had a great tip. Remove the black plastic housing (pictured @ 1:40 of the video) it's held on by two Phillips screws. You'll see a protruding metal knob. If you rotate the knob from side to side you'll feel the IAC valve open and close. After you spray the carb cleaner in the IAC access hole, rotate the knob from side to side to fee up the valve. This REALLY helps if your valve is really old and has lots of deposits on it.
Thank you so much!!!!!! My car has had this problem forever and my husband and I couldn't figure out what it was. No mechanic could tell us the issue and finally a GIRL! at an autoparts store suggested it might be this. This video helped! My husband cleaned the valve. And so far it's good. Thank you thank you thank you!
very nice
You're so pretty
Did you take the piece off or did you spray it like he did? It makes me nervous to just spray and not know if that cleaner should seep into the part.
@Eddie 🤣 I'm not with him anymore so can't really tell him
@@TheDcrocks1 did not remove yes risky he didn't but I think it ended up being a sensor under the hood in that car. This helped but the main issue was a sensor somewhere on the engine not inside the car
This situation happened to me more than 10 years ago on my 2001 Camry 6. I had no idea and my 'trusted' mechanics charged me more than $400 to replace the IAC. I was taken advantaged of by the dishonest mechanics, who, I thought, was a friend.
This video saved my ass! I got my Camry running right for a just a few bucks and under an hour. Thanks so much for sharing!
+Bigchuck678 bro you should clean your egr valve as well. Took mine off bathe that bish in B12 Chem tool and now it runs so smooth and response is immediate
+IXBlackoutXI1 how the hell you get the egr off... if you have a camry it seems very difficult the bottom bolt or nuts
It is man i went as far as taking off the tube that goes to the bottom of the engine and also bathe it in chem tool and alot of shit came out of it. Oh and there are two metal gaskets. be sure to be careful not to lose them as your engine wont run right. if you take off the tube there are 3 gasket. At the rear i had to remove an engine mount rod. its bolted to the intake manifold and the engine itself i think its a 14mm but im not to sure. Taking it off makes it way easier to get to the right bolt underneath the egr. I had got the left nut off with no problem but the right that is close to the engine rusted to the threaded stud that is bolted to the egr. so i had to get a vise grip some WD40 and a socket to get them unstuck. its the little things that get in the way man. but once you do it you wont be disappointed. Also becareful! When i got the egr off, where it connected to on the manifold the carbon build up was a disaster i could barely get the tip of my index in there but once i cleaned it out i was able to get my whole finger in there. Oh and qtips help alot too. Now i had used to much b12 to clean it out cause once i put everything back on i went to turn the key, the engine started to turn but stop harshly.
I had a sick feeling in my stomach that i had hydro locked the engine. But with alot of turns of the key it finally started but damn it stuck to high heaven you could smell all that carbon burning up smoke coming through the tail pipe. so be careful man just a heads up
Did ur power shut down as well in ur car?
DUDE! AWESOME. My 2000 camry had the exact same issue, and your video helped me find the culprit. I was just about to go get a new IAC valve, the part alone costs $200. I cleaned it just like yours and that cleared it right up. Thanks for taking the time to make this video!
For that IAC, to do a more thorough cleaning, you can just unscrew those two phillips screws in front and clean it that way; easier than taking off the whole thing.
My daughter and her boyfriend joined us on vacation after a seven hour drive in her 99 Camry. Once they arrived the car began to stall while idling and died every time the car was put into gear. With no tools but a multi-plier from my mountain bike backpack and the last can of carb cleaner I picked up from a small mountain town gas station, your fix worked perfectly! Thank you!
I like people like you. thanks for the educational upload
ok my bad, i did this process again but this time opened the butterfly and cleaned behind it too. Also use a lot more spray than showed in vid id say. But thanks for this video it helped me out a lot!
You need to disconnect the air bleed inlet hose and plug with your finger, then fill the IAC with cleaner and then manipulate the flapper for a few minutes. In order to reach these you need to remove the plastic housing with the solenoid. This will clean the IAC much better than your method and won't cause the cleaner to drain into your crankcase. Drain into a cup and repeat until it shows clean. You don't want cleaner and crud it cleaned draining into the crankcase.
Dennis Hamblin it would be nice if you would show us?
DelaneyStudios I didn't video it when I did the repair. But it is quite simple. Disconnect the air bleed hose, put your finger over the outlet for the air bleed hose so that when you spray cleaner into the IAC it doesn't simply pour out the other end, spray cleaner into it and then manipulate the flapper for a bit. If it is really gummed up it might take some effort to move it at first but once it breaks free it should move easily. Drain the cleaner into a cup and repeat until clean. When I did this on a 95 Camry it idled like a champ afterwards while before it wouldn'nt idle at all when cold. You just don't want to clean with the air bleed hose attach because whatever you clean out of your IAC then would go into the crankcase. No sense moving crud from one part of the engine assembly to another when it is a simple thing to disconnect the hose. It also allows you to pool a bunch of cleaner into the IAC because you can block the air bleed connection with your finger.
yea stop the BS most of you making comments dont even have a license or dont know to fix a common problen, give the guy some credit
Nice job car is running like a champ now
ahmad
Lucky u 😔🤎💯🙌🏾
Hey, cool! Thanks for your help. This happened to our 2003 Sienna van. I was able to take a little shortcut though thank goodness. I didn't want to take everything off back to the throttle body because the hoses have never been removed and would not come off easily. I just detached the air intake hose from the air filter box. I could see the IAC port in your video down the hose. So, I snaked a piece of clear vinyl tubing down into it and sprayed carb cleaner into it 3 or 4 times using the thin can straw on the other end. Worked like a charm. Appreciate the video!!!
Good info and the lisp was fun to listen to
apb38
😂 👍🏻
wow, that's exciting! good for you. and thank you for doing that for your dad.
This same thing happens with Caddilacs, but the valve is easier to get too!! I sprayed carb cleaner to the valve throttle control and made sure air filter was changed as well. My engine sounds just like new.
Dude, thank you so much, you saved me money and that makes you the man in my book. Changed battery that went bad and my 02 camary le wouldn't idle or stay running. Thanks to you car is running great was able to have the alternator checked(without removing) and all is well. Video appreciated!!
You just made my day Sir! Thanks!!
The thing about the price for this repair from what I’ve seen online, they often say it takes just about an hour at most, yet for some reason it costs so much to repair it. The prices online for the iac can range from even 20 on eBay to 350!!! It just seems like mechanics are not really being truthful about this repair! Depending on the car, and from what I’ve seen, for many cars this part isn’t usually too far, it sounds like a bit of a ripoff! As far as I’ve seen perhaps the biggest challenge to this repair is the bolts holding it breaking or something to where you might have to drill them out or something like that! But if they unscrew relatively well, replacing the part is quite relatively straight forward and somewhat easy really. And if it one decides to clean it instead of buying another it’s also not too difficult, with solvent or gunk cleaner and some brush or something. I mean the pricing for this repair and part just seems to show how much of a ripoff mechanics can be. Like now at O’Reillys it’s about 230 dollars, but it’s also on eBay for like 20 bucks to over 200!! It’s just crazy the games they play! They’re making like 1000% profit or something!! It’s just theft!!!
I'm having the same exact problem with my '98 Camry 4 cyl when it's cold.
I cleaned the throttle body with Berryman B12 and spray down that hole for the IAC, but the cleaner just drains out of the bottom and not INTO the IAC. But I'm still having the same problem starting in the morning though. Thanks for the instructional video you made! GOOD JOB!
if you have a K&N sports filter your IAC will dirt up
Just switch to regular air filter and you will NEVER HAVE TO CLEAN IT AGAIN !
never ever ever oky !!
why did the check engine light come on?
Thank you! I was preparing to take the throttle body apart until I found this extremely fortunate video. Yippee!
Out of the few videos I have seen onnly person not to take out the whole thing to clean. As a lazy man I am glad to see that I don't have to take it off on my mom's care because it would be a bitch (not as much as that one) to take off.
Thanks for great video, very helpful info.
I just want to point out that newer model Camry (2002+) use electrical throttle control, no more idle air control valve. So if you have cold start problem, it is more likely fuel system is at fault (fuel pump, fuel injector, fuel pump relay or ECM).
I have a Toyota 2001 Camry 4 cyl I was cleaning.my. Throttle body control I d spray it with a throttle body Cleaning plus I sprayed that Idle Air without taking the hose. After that my car did not start any more any good info guys it would be helpful
Took wife's 98 Avalon to Sport City Toyota in Dallas just last week. Intermittent low rpm idle problem. There $99 diagnostic quote was $2495.00 They had a laundry list but I had them replace the idle air control valve and clean the carbon out of the throttle body. $596.00. They also offered to fix the lamp on the license plate for $21.95. Checked when I got home - both lamps were good. You think I'll go back? Least it does idle right now.
Pt2 sienna: unclip the two air cleaner holddowns on the right. Unscrew all the way the remaining two clamps on the intake and use something to gently pry off the flex tube. Spray about 3 tablespoons of cleaner into the hole shown, it is almost under the windshield. Put back together, start engine. Will run rough and smoke while burning off the cleaner about 10 seconds. Easy fix. If you are not familiar with what you are doing, don't attempt any fixes.
Someone asked how to do this to a sienna, pls excuse sharing this thread. The same motor is in the siennas of similar years. You need to remove that black air intake rubber flex pipe to be able to spray carb cleaner into the opening shown in this video. There are ONLY three clamps that need to be removed on that tube. It is easier if you take off the air cleaner lid first. Unplug that electrical connector on top of the big black air cleaner, unscrew the clamp holding the wrinkled flex tube.
You didn't even clean the throttle body ?
To clean the I.A.C properly you need to remove. It's only 2 bolts and a connector.
Once removed you clean the port hole and I.A.C with carb cleaner and a rag like new.
You should clean the throttle body as it can give the same symptoms as I.A.C and only takes a minute.
Rev the engine under the hood to keep the car from stalling and spray vigorously then clean both top and bottom of the throttle plate.
Recommend cleaning MAF sensor as well.
California does not consist only of bad gas. There is good gas out there, its called Chevron with Techron and Shell gasoline. Even if its in a bad area just add a bottle of fuel cleaner. 5000 mi per fuel service is what a mech will do to his own car. 10-15k mi is recommended. Take it how you want it. If all this cannot stop your car from gunking up, get out of cali, gas is to expensive there anyway. Also congrats on the seafoam stuff. I only trust seafoam on transmissions
If your IAC valve is clogged your father doesnt take care of his car. Also note people if your gunna do a throttle service on your car make sure that your experienced. if you have no experience have a mech do it. if your gunna do it on your own make sure your car has a cable controlled throttle. if is electric controlled like this one and u spray the wrong areas it will mess the car up. people plain and simple have a mech do a fuel service every 5000 miles and you will be fine.
hey. i gotta 1993 camry. my car starts but i feel the performance isnt as good a couple of weeks ago. its automatic it just doesnt accelerate fast enough. also the gas pedal get stuck at times. a mechanic said my AIC is dirty and he said he can clean it for $75 but i didnt have money at that time, i havnt cleaned it yet. also i have a tear on my air intake hose. got any tips thanks alot.
MY 1998 LEXUS HAS THE SAME ENGINE, THIS WAS SO HELPFUL AND YOU SAVED ME LIKE $300.00 BUCKS, THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHOWING THIS
EXACTLY..... I have a K&N pod filter on my Honda and the only thing its good for is the induction sound. Other then that they are useless for an everyday car. the oil causes all sorts of problems.. I leave it on in the winter ( un oiled) but i wash it every 2 weeks when i do the car..Then in the dry weather i remove it, oil it and put it away....
@moonstar9823 okay.. but i cant tell if ur being sarcastic... if you arent then yes one little needle under 1000 would be 800. pretty much every car must be idling at 800 if not then u gotta fix that by tuning or taking apart the idle air contl valve or getting a new one. but yes 800 would be one needle under 1000
@jonathanspatigue1...can u please explain how u read revs to 800......as far as I know revs are multiplied by 1000 to find the exact rev....so if the needle is on 1 it means its doing 1000.... if on 2 it means 2000...so and so...if they r one point below 1 then its 800....but in here i can see they r one point above 1 so its 1200.....am i right?? plz correct if i'm wrong.....
well not bad but few things i think you may left out you should wait before you start it once you sprayed that b12 in there it could choke you out and leave that code...also i think if you start something finish it... you might as well spray out your thottle clean it up and your intake and you EGR valve..if you got gunk in your idle control imagine what you got in those areas
@saik0pod It could be simply the cleaner being burned in the engine, and it needs another cleaning. OR, you might have a cracked head or blown headgasket. I guess maybe you could hyrdolock it if you emptied a half a can in it. If your not smart enough to work on your car, don't do it. He didn't make you do anything.
Haters are the REAL losers...... dude just fixed his dads car for free so all you guys that spent so much time and energy on negative comments can just SIT ON IT! Plus he made a great vid..... yuandrew keep up the good work and buy a haynes manual or what have you.... your dads car has the potential to be a hotrod....... 190hp out of the box..... saw that K&N sticker.... WOOT!
This damaged my Throttle Position Sensor a few days later :-(
IF YOUR "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHTIS ON CONSTANTLY, YOU'RE GUZZLING TOO MUCH GAS AND HAVE LESS POWER, I'M SURE YOU DAMAGED YOUR TPS. WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE IS ASK YOUR MECH TO REMOVE THE IAC VALVE AND CLEAN IT MANUALLY. THE CARB CLEANER LEFT INSIDE THE VALVE REACHED THE SENSOR!!
@jonathanspatigue1 .....i'm not being sarcastic....but actually i want to clarify it becaz couple of days ago i was explaining the same thing to a guy and he told me i'm wrong.....and after reading your comment i thought i was wrong. but actually i wasn't......thanks to clarify....
@TheMrHtor The check engine light was probably because he unplugged the MAF sensor with the ignition on. No biggie, just reset the light. I did what he suggested and made sure to plug everything back in before starting and as soon as the cleaner burned off it ran great, no engine lights.
hey man i have some questions mi brother car its a corolla 89 4 cly its takes mto much time to turn on u have to star it like 8 times to start sometimes more do u think this is the same problem thanks and sorry for mi bad spelling
well it looks like even afer doing what was said in the video my car is still doing the exact same thing as in the video still maybe my iac has gone bad. Should I carefully insert something like a pipe cleaner in there to see if it works?
i used to have this problem as well. the 'check engine' light lit up.
but unfortunately it was my throttle body that was broken, after cleaning it with throttle body cleanser, it still lid up...
i had my throttle body changed and it cost me a bomb.
@BadBoyMike3 its better to do it cold because its easier on your hands so you lower the risk of injury to yourself but i've done this on both hot and cold engines. some high level fuel cleaners require the engine running sometimes
i am having a problem with my iac valve on a 98 honda civic, i dont know how nor do i want to take it all apart... i would like to try this but there are two different holes in my throttle boddy... not sure which one to spray... can anyone help me out?
DONT USE CARB CLEANER!! it will breakdown the the plastic in the IAC motor and cause it to lock up. use Throttle Body and Intake Cleaner for fuel injected engines, which wont harm the motor or wiring. its available at any auto store for bought $5.
@rizegraymon1 - Same thing. I've got a combination of stalling when I turn on A/C (but not fan), stalling on cold starts, and getting silence half the time when I turn the key. Any ideas on what the problem is?
why dont you adjust the idle valve :S so that it sits at correct idle...... so much easier, get a medium star head screw driver, at the idler, turn about 1/8th turn anticlockwise, and there you go.....
Thats the one thing I think that sucks about non american cars. I replaced an IAC on my Ford and it was a piece of cake. IMO I think Fords are the easiest to repair.
Installed a k and n intake, put the MAF sensor back the wrong way, kept turning off after starting it up, finally noticed my error after 3hrs
i wish i'd seen this video as my brother could have helped me do this. i guess i didn't get ripped off really though with a charge of about $75-100.
oh and btw, cars should idle at about 900 rpm, so yours is now running higher than normal, you still have your foot to keep it from dieing, pretty obvious
rockauto is a online store.. that ships to i think world wide... so go visit them and look if they do ship it to u its nice ive fixed my rx7 from buying from them cuz local they want an eye and a leg just because its a rotary
@ edmundohillary ...... to clear the check engine code just unplug the negative connection of your battery for 5 minutes and when you connect it again the check engine code will be gone ... works every time.
Thanks...u save me alot of money...my toyota has the same problem...now I know how to fix it..😉😉
LOOKS LIKE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT OUT AFTER TURNING ON THE VAN AGAIN I DID THIS JOB ON MY SIENNA 2002. THANK YOU SO MUCH. GRACIAS
@ukelearwar
you're supposed to use the air intake cleaner..carburetor cleaner will mess up the sensor
but i guess it's too late now
Just to warn you, carb cleaner can eat away any type of rubber seals. So you might want to get a can of CRC electric parts cleaner.
@jonathanspatigue1 Cold start.
Idle is always higher on a cold motor. Once it warms up it'll drop down to where it should be.
Thats my problem also after useing cleaner (not WD40)...My mechanic told me to check level of cooling liquid when its cold.
spraying cleaner into the IAC opening in the throttle body lets the fluid with carbon drain into the engine...IF there is a center hose that empties into the crankcase. Check to be sure!
You shouldn't use K&N. My dad has a 2000 BMW 7 series and my brother has a 2002 Taurus SES and K&N filters fried both of the Mass Airflow Sensors.
Many thanks for that.
BTW the IAC is on the side of the throttle doohickey, not under, for 1992-1996 6V Camrys.
Quick question I have the exact same issue how did the engine code clear though ??? On it's own ?? Thanks !!!
Thanks for this but unfortunately my lower in my car is dying as well 😪 idk wat to do
K&N will pay to fix it if thier filter oil caused it to go bad but what relavence did that have to this vid
I DID EXACTLY THE SAME THING AS YOU, BUT NOW HOW DO I TAKE OFF THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. PLEASE HELP ME.
yeah my tune up cost me thousand dollars 3 years ago...... now i do it all myself fuckkkkkk the mechanic
Good Information...it would have been nice if u showed us how you took those parts...but pretty nice infor.
...m camry is doing the same thing but i have an i4...do i still have the same part? prob not right...-_-
Worked like a charm on my wife's 98 Avalon. Seriously a 10 minute fix,,,if you take your time.. thanks bro.
Thank so much, live in texas and weather is bad, same thing happened to me. all fixed. Thanks agian.
where does all that spray component goes..did u removed any hose too? and did u get any smoke when u started the car
make sure the cleaner you use is plastic safe, sometimes that valve is actually made of plastic
The Lexus stealer charged me $1300 for IAC replacement. I've never returned to them for service.
You didn't have to drop the hose below the valve so the cleaner doesn't run places it shouldnt?
lol, thats why i hate mechanics. they try to get a bunch of money from something so simple.
Thank you for this step by step video.
My 2000 camry actually had this exactly same problem twice in the last 1.5 years. At first, it frustrated me a lot because I did not know what was going on.
Now I can just keep a carb cleaner in my car and fix it myself when next time it happens.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for this helpful video !!!
Hay worked for me thanks. Hope your well all these years after the fact
Yea u definetly fixed the issue but now ur idle is above 800 wicch is not good..
reeving the engine like that wont warm it up faster juts letting you know!!
i don't think any car with a MAF sensor disconnected would like to run......
your check engine light is on...doesn't seem like you solved the problem...
Thank you so much. I finally was able to do it.
THANK YOU. THANK THE LIVING SHIT OUT OF YOU. Check the video response I posted.
my car stalls when i turn on the defrost or a/c any help would be nice
hey zloben9000 i have a 1987 camry , i took it to AAMCO they said that i need and IDLE SWITCH & a tune-up. what is that? is there an easy fix for it?
And now for our next lesson, how about cleaning the Camry's EGR valve?
Lol, same car and same problem, especially if you don't warm it up.
SOMEONE IS ON MY ACCOUNT!!!!! JOHN W. IS THAT U????
Yo wtf this massively helped me out lol
Get rid of that K&N air filter and you will not have this problem.
fuck mechanics charging shit loads of money to spray carb cleaner!
Thank you so much for your video! I was able to clean the IACV in my car without removing it and now my car runs better than ever before. Keep posting your videos.
pcri investor
same proplem hapen to me 1 month ago
sory for my bad english
This damaged my Throttle Position Sensor a few days later :-(
