  • Durarara!! is a great anime to watch, not quite new for 2022, but always relevant for analysis and discussion with its commentary on everyday life. Perfect for a video essay! Durarara!! follows the story of three students meeting and changing each others lives; Mikado, Kida, and Anri, with other characters like Celty, Izaya Orihara, and Shizuo Heiwajima in the crazy city of Ikebukuro. Mikado wishes to escape the everyday, Kida seeks to protect it, and Anri doesn't see herself as worth one. But they all share one thing; they have an every day. The entire city does. We all do. Analyzing the anime, we can look at what they all learn about every day life, how they love a world which doesnt love them back, and discuss how it then relates to our real world. Is the mundane our enemy, or do we simply give it too much power? These are the great theme Durarara!! covers, and they'll make for a great anime discussion in today's video essay.

I liked how DRRR looks like a series with pure chaos with no direction and main theme, but in reality there is. It is people's normal lives and how they try their very best to achieve and maintain it. That's where the antagonists in this series are usually people who destroy people's normal lives in every way. Izaya does it by trying to manipulate others and pull them out into the exciting life, Mikado for going against the ordinary live and subconsciously hurting everyone he knew, Aoba trying to swim in the sea for as long as he can manage and pulling others to his antics. It's clear Narita had an idea what he's writing when he wrote DRRR

For sure. Its a series that revels in being odd, but is isn't odd simply for the sake of it. Being weird forces us to consider what normal even is

This theme reminds me a lot of Higurashi, the desperate attempts, especially by Rena Ryugu, to find that normal daily life despite the horrific circumstances that might endanger that life.

I think Now I’m just waiting on someone new to cover Mushishi and I think I’ll die happy as that show is probably the most underrated anime I know personally and it’s also in my top 3

I think S2 especially wraps up the season with this kind of message with Mikado saying, after chasing both the extraordinary, always remembering Izaya's words that the extraordinary become the ordinary after a while... while also trying to shut down how it can hurt his happy life and friends at multiple turns... causing everything that leads up to that pivotal scene at the end that I won't spoil for those who have only seen season 1...
after all that and everything is resolved... he remarks that was lied after everything was "neither ordinary nor extraordinary... but it was real" in other words instead of chasing the unknown or boxing himself in the idea of every day life... he instead accepts and love the world for what it is

Believe me when I say, most nights I play the entire season 1 at bed time, and can memorize the piano that plays at the very begining of episode 1, and "Mikado". The narrative, and style of the show is easy on fall asleep too. Even the music, and action scene, this show is mostly likely my favorite anime to fall asleep to at nights, and Mushi-Shi during the day.

this in an interesting concept that I've been trying to implement into my own life. An aftereffect of COVID maybe lol but in finding joy and satisfaction in my job that survived the lockdowns as it's something I like doing, working on my marriage, trying to challenge myself on actually reaching out to my friends in a way I had never allowed myself to before, and practicing more slow living/cottage-core type vibes to just slow down and find satisfaction in the mundane as mentioned in this video. And while it's still a work in progress, it's been noted by others that I carry myself with a calmness and serenity thats infectious. So I think I'm doing pretty good😅

this is what the series means when it says it's a twisted love story. Not a romantic one (not entirely), but a general appreciation of the everyday life, no matter how weird or strange it may be. That is why Izaya is the main villain. He is a man trying to avoid death so he can keep loving humanity. He's not capable of moving on in his life, he's not capable of appreciating the now because he's always wanting something entertaining to see in humanity. He's unable to accept anything new and different in life, which may be one of the reasons he hates people like Shizuo, Celty and Anri. They're able to be happy despite the strange risks and circumstances they're facing and he hates that. He hates that they can be happy amongst the people in his life, something he is uncapable of because he's scared.

Wow, what an amazing analysis on one of my favorite childhood animes. I was simply a poor kid growing up with my family in someone else's basement when I came across Durarara on Adult Swim in 2011. While I was just a kid that never quite picked up every detail during the plot, I immensely enjoyed each character and their narration. That's what really pulled me in, the fact that each episode is discussing a different character's perspective and their thoughts, their actions for that day or the current situation. That's what made the show interesting, the fact that each character has their own motives. The show had several different little stories but never felt overwhelming, it was a natural progression. I really admired how you broke down the themes of the show, and how the 3 main characters influenced the show due to their past experiences and their ideologies with dealing with everyday life. Frankly, this video easily could've been over an hour if you decided to discuss more characters, and that alone goes to show how much depth the show had. Maybe I look back at the anime through rose-tinted glasses, but I know that whenever I think about Durarara, I think about a show that goes through everyday life and shows how chaotic it can be, then showing different perspectives from different personalities. Expected the unexpected, so to say. I agree with your final message, life is pretty crazy yet that is what gives each of us our own special story.

I like the balance of living and finding value in everything, the smallest things matter. Not everything is special, but everything is special even if its isnt to me or you to someone out there it is. Out mundane is a special thing to someone outside it, we have a will and there is a way be it far or hard. I question being human, and what that entails. I enjoy the present or am trying tho i am aware of patterns...I fall into them myself and I am learning to enjoy the mundane and expand into other mundanes of the world around me.

The mundane... IDK. It was interesting to hear this view on the situation, yes. Having had my struggles, my experiences: sometimes I wonder, was wishing for a change really worth it? What do we as human do when the change consumes us? In a bit different way though... Not that we don't see it any more but more of feeling like in a wheel: you might enjoy what you do but you can't stop as you may drown then. It's weird to explain what I've been feeling; therapists don't show any intent to listen and friends... Maybe that's the root of all my issues, not having anyone IRL I could trust. Still. It can get a terrifying feeling when you become orchestrated by the change and one step off the rhythm could mean the end of it all... High stakes high reward... Whilst the life lately has felt like a mine field I guess I've made it a literal one with an actual chance of it all going up in ash. If there is any advice I'd like to give it's to value present situations tenfold knowing that after it has changed you might not come back and you'll never have that peace you once had ever again.

I really like your interpretation of Durarara!!!. I was too young to understand those themes when I watched it.
That aside, I wanna be honest, not to bring negativity but maybe as constructive criticism or at least an opinion i want to express: I think the first 10 minutes had too little to say about the actual show and it was more of a half baked philosophical ramble. The point got across way too quickly so that part extended too much. Also, the parts about the system sounded like a political flyer and felt unnecesary. I like a lot of your videos and I think what makes them so great is that you are able to stick to the source material while making an analysis and don't make it about you if that is not the focus of the video. You probably won't read this and if you do, it may annoy you. For that, sorry in advance. As a viewer, I thought my insight could maybe help.

Good things only have value when you have bad things to judge them against. You gotta work to live so your life has value because you worked for it. It's been a while, but I remember a big part of Durarara!! being about collapsing a love triangle. At least the second season. Two leaders of a gang, and a woman who doesn't want to choose which guy to go with. Or her and a guy being all about one friend. Or.... ;)
The first season I felt was better, with just the utter randomness thatit approached everything with and the weird reveal of Dollars.
Then again, the gang context and main character and the fact that it took place in Ikebukuro..... I think there's more to it and a comparison to Ikebukuro West Gate Park, though it's been about 20 years since I watched the j-drama.

I dont like a lot of things a nd some ar just unfair and cruel, but then some are awesom and there. And to be open for good too is important whiole being able to see th not great. An some things ar unpredictable.
    The video is thought provocing?!
Oh reminds me ogf death from discworld in hogather, humans need imagination to e human, justice, love,. fairnes, that are not eiting i you crumble the univere down, to make that real they need to imagine it. Humans can make them real.
And yeah ideals are ideas, but they can change a lot what is done an along the way a looot.

things being so unfair and cruel, which they truly are, is why I think being open is the key. We can not simply wish things to be better, and change will not be instant, but we must make the world better. So, in the meantime, the best we can do is appreciate what is good, and fight what is bad

I know people who try, who do so within the bounds of reason. They don't love every day, but they find ways to enjoy every day despite their flaws. I have my own conflicts with that mindset, but I respect the ability to do so
