I don’t claim to be an expert about Izaya Orihara, and he’s always confused me a bit. But I find him to be so interesting and such a huge contributor to Durarara’s story, so I felt inclined to share some thoughts on him. Due to my current video workload, I needed to make something that required less prep work so I decided this would be that. So I only rewatched a small portion of the series and made this script much more casual and stream-of-consciousness, rather than trying to be absolutely certain about the facts for this one. As a result, I could have missed something, or forgotten details. For those reasons, some of this could be wrong, so take what I say with a huge grain of salt, but these are just some of my ideas!

I noticed nothing from it was in the video, so I wondered: have you seen the second season?
Because, if you really wanna know more about Izaya, then -- aside from reading the LNs, obviously -- try dissecting DRRR!! X2. (Just make sure you keep track of who's who in the chat room, lol!)

Lyla Heart This video does dissect my opinion of Izaya including the later seasons - I’ve seen the entire anime, I just chose to only use visuals/clips from the first season because it’s my favourite one. "He might seem cold-blooded, but he’s more human and his heart more brittle than anyone else. So much, that if it was filled with human love or betrayal, it’d break easily. Which is why, I think, he chose from the start to avoid it all, to love humanity. You understand? Not to accept, not to face it. To avoid it".
(SHINRA KISHITANI ON IZAYA ORIHARA, DURARARA!! VOL.13)
That is one of my favorite quotes on izaya from the light novels. i love that anime izaya was very mysterious. that's what attracted me at the beginning but his character has much more nuance and i wish that it could've been better portrayed. in a way he was very sensitive and very lonely thus he always wanted to be above everyone. he loved humans but he couldn't access to that same love. a very tragic story indeed

@@erois6190 yeah but i felt that part was rushed and it didn't have the same impact than the novel's version. especially after the part where izaya kicks a lamp post after realizing that shinra is the only person he actually cares about (that was also in the anime but it was more subdued).

Well, the Novels are really interesting because you can undestand him a little better and with more backround.
How he is describe as a human because he can feel things too and the way He isolated himself to observe.
Also Izaya is very honest with his "wants" but not with feelings.
There is a scene that was not put in the anime and was like the only time that seems Izaya loses control of himself.
"In retrospect Shinra, who lived confidently above this world, did invoke some jealousy in him.
Yet he was attempting to betray even a friend like that. Not a friend by Izaya’s standards, but a “friend” as defined by most people in the world.
    - He’ll probably be mad at me if he finds out that I went to meet Celty taking the head with me.
    “Haha!”
Izaya couldn’t help but laugh slightly as he pictured his only “friend” by the world’s standards getting mad at him.
There is nothing to be afraid of.
This is the way I have lived my life all along, he laughed as he thought -
    Laughed -
    Laughed -
    Laughed -
He clenched his right fist and slammed it hard into the telephone pole next to him.
It made a loud sound, but since Izaya was in a secluded alleyway, no one took notice of him.
What did Izaya’s face look like?
Why did he slam his fist into the telephone pole?
    What was on his mind?
No one in the world would ever know.

I remember this scene from the novels! It was nice to see that moment of weakness from him, and it confirms that he truly treasures his friendship with Shinra (although the latter may not agree to that).
I would also love to see more scenes where Izaya shows a little vulnerability but it'd conflict with the tropes he represents (the one watching over the crowd), so I'll just live with what Narita-sensei is willing to share with us.

I remember the moment Simon punched Izaya, literally and figuratively bringing him to their reality of the situation and making him drop his inhumane, above humans, observer persona. It was satisfying and sad at the same time, because from the looks of it he can not function in a way of everybody else for too long. I think, it is some sort of defense or coping mechanism in order to not have a boring, unsatisfying life, he chooses to observe humans. Additionally, if I remember correctly he tried to call his secretary a friend, even if it was a teasing, sarcastic attempt.

    • @magicalmomo9987
      @magicalmomo9987 4 роки тому +75

You're right! It is absolutely a coping mechanism. At one point Shinra (I believe in the Light Novels) expresses that Izaya has a very fragile heart. Therefore he doesn't allow anyone to get too close and instead chooses to love humanity as a whole so that he won't be hurt if the one single person he could love does not return it.
It's very sad, especially since I personally believe he could've been a very different person if given the proper guidance and friendship needed during his formative years.

Because he doesn't understand why Shizuo is so loved when he is rude and scary and he, that act like people want him, isn't loved. A lot of supplementary material exists to further explore Izaya's character. There are 2 stories set after the end of the initial durarara called Sunset with Izaya Orihara which focus on him and his situation after the events of the main story.
There is also the Epitome of Eighteen Histories anthology which is set some time after durarara and features most major characters being interviewed on the topic of Izaya Orihara.
Izaya is a very interesting character but the anime also twists him a lot compared to the novel. In the anime he is portrayed as very inhuman and a lot of characterization is left out to make him more enigmatic. The big scene with Rio also does not exist in the novel and instead Izaya meets up with 2 women who want to commit suicide, one of which later shows up in Durarara x2 and the scene from the beginning is retconned in through a flashback.
The manga follows the novel more closely and chapter 4 and 5 have the replaced scene.
Both scenes are great but paint very different pictures.

That he is jealous of humans loving each other and the loneliness of his that peeks through his strong façade sometimes can also be seen in his desire to have nabe with someone, hence inviting Namie for the same. Even though in the same breath, he finds it illogical to have a nabe party which is out of season, he is jealous of the love and warmth in that. And Namie can look through it, coz he's that predictable in his behaviour. As you can see, he holds upon that idea when he invites his gang again for a Nabe party. I love his character! A lot of people in the comments are making points about the novels. About how Izaya is portrayed in the anime versus in the novels. I would like to point out that both seasons of the anime are almost identical to the light novels aside from a few bonus scenes with the Dollars in season 1, and the lack of the light pole scene in season 2, which I will admit that was an important scene for Izaya’s character. I personally think that it wasn’t necessarily that the anime didn’t portray Izaya correctly. In fact, both the novels AND the anime demonize Izaya through the perspectives of the characters. Izaya’s also not as responsible for all the shit that goes down in drrr as they would make you believe. I also think that it’s a little difficult for anyone to perceive Izaya in the way that he really is through anime format versus in the novels, which analyze him.
I agree with a lot of the things that you’ve said. I’m an Izaya enthusiast myself so I think about him and his love of humanity and what it means a lot. I REALLY like what you said about bringing people down to his level so that he can be a part of him. I think with the amount of information you were working with that you did a really good job with his character!
He’s delightfully illogical. Predictably unpredictable. Contradictory while also perfectly consistent, just like you said! There are a few things that I disagreed with of course. I wish you’d covered his relationship with his sisters and Namie! But I’m sure you had a limited amount of time to work with. Anyway, I just wanted to say I’m so happy you made this!! Great video ! The soundtrack of Durarara is so iconic, that brought back memories. You always have a knack to make me remember fondly characters or animes I loved when I discovered them yeaaaaars ago.
Izaya was easily a favorite and I remember people talking about how no one in the Durarara world loved Izaya (re "I love humans so humans should love me") but a lot of people who loved Durarara absolutely loved Izaya (so in a way wasn't he right haha?).
I always wondered if he didn't feel a tiny bit lonely in that position he choose for himself. But maybe he doesn't need or care for connections more than what he already has. I wonder what his character had become in the light novels or if even the story is finished. Anyway, have a good day!

hello!! first i must say, i absolutely love that this video was made in 2020 cause boy!!! drrr is supergreat and it hasnt been off my mind since 2014 :') i'm so happy other people are still thinking and making content about this series!!
i've read the novels and i highly recommend them cause it makes the anime's story so much more clearer (as well as the main theme of the story which is twisted love), and it takes a deeper dive into izaya's character, specifically novel 9 which is all about izaya! (in the anime it's the episode where he's gotten kidnapped by amphisbaena, but there's a lot left out, including the infamous lamppole scene)
the main kicker with izaya is that he's actually quite fragile and selfprotective and divides himself from people so that he won't get hurt, he knows how unpredictable people can be, so he protects himself and his own feelings from potential betrayal or any other sort of bad feelings humans can show by saying that him unconditionally loving all of humanity is enough for him. I find it kinda fun cause as a kid izaya was antisocial and a loner, and then he met shinra :)

Great video as usual, I think Izaya imagines himself as the BEST at being human, but then comes the goodest boy Shizuo. Showing him the best in humanity and becoming living proof that the things he believes are not just false, but hypocritical and self serving. Making Izaya in turn "just like everyone else" and above no one.

Izaya always came across to me as a giant troll but someone who can (and will) be the one to deliver the ugly truth when it's needed. After learning more about Izaya, the more I realize I kind of relate to him in a way. How he detatches himself from others out of fear of attatchments and the loneliness he doesn't admit to himself being in. For a while, I have been pretty lonely due to how nonexistant my friendship circle was so I've decided to detatch myself from others just so I wouldn't feel as lonely, but in the end that lonliness was broken once I've actually interacted with people last year. But I think I'm still pretty detached, just because of that one sour interaction I had with the only friend of mine back in 2018, it was awful and I just don't even know if I'll ever give my loyalty to others ever again. So, if my current friendship breaks apart at any time, I'd like to think I'm ready for it. And don't get me started with Romance. I think my heart can't handle that kind of relationship. It's just too much and out of my comfort zone.

Izaya is the Lex Luthor to Shizuo’s Superman imo. And not just in a simple way like “ones a bad guy and ones a good guy”. Neither of them perfectly fit into that mold. It’s more that one is a schemer and one is straightforward; and the schemer envies and hates what the other has on some level, while also seeing them as the “other”, that this desirable quality of theirs is cheating somehow. He’s predictably unpredictable in a way he hates. And he especially hates feeling that this cheater is more accepted than he is, when he knows what everyone should want and need.

Are you saying Izaya is trying to push his perspective on humanity on others? Like, are you trying to say he's just misguided, while thinking he's not? I can't understand what you mean, but I see some people agree with you. Can you say it another way? Are you saying his philosophy is wrong? Is it cynicism? Is cynicism wrong? There's no philosophy or interpretation that is "wrong"
