  • The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) was founded in 1867 as the Illinois Industrial University. It was one of the first land-grant universities established in the United States, and its mission was to "foster access to higher education for the working people.“ In 1885, the Illinois Industrial University was renamed the University of Illinois. This change reflected the university's growing reputation as a major research institution. In the early 20th century, UIUC continued to grow and expand. New academic departments were created, and the university's research output increased significantly.
Today, UIUC is one of the leading public universities in the United States. It is home to over 40,000 students and has a faculty of over 3,000. The university offers over 150 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, and its research expenditures rank in the top 10 among public universities. UIUC is also a member of the Big Ten Conference, one of the most prestigious athletic conferences in the country.
