One of our valedictorians did an entire speech on her academic career to say she didn't think it was worth the effort, saying track and field had her getting up at "the buttcrack of dawn" and the long hours of her other classes putting her through the wringer. She didn't sound sad about it, just kind of triumphantly exhausted and a bit pissed. She really preached and you love to see it, et cetera. This is also in southern California, where none of us looked forward to sitting directly under the sun in black clothing as Summer Economy-Size (spring) goes on above, around, and inside of us. It also helped that at that time I had long accepted these affairs and was in a good place mentally, somehow.
Wow it's interesting to hear that your expectations for graduation were so different from ours! Also I can't imagine an outdoor ceremony in Southern California heat 😅
I was a 2020 graduate too and honestly I was very happy that we never got an official ceremony because i was so stressed about it. We ended up making a small one at home with our cousins and that was enough to make me happy :,) it really was a blessing in disguise. Also I’m a 2003er and guess what some of us graduate a little earlier >B^[
2003 guy here. (well from europe, but covid still got to us too) normally one year befor we go into our graduating class we get a huge trip to another country and have fun there, EG. go to italy for a beach episode, go to greece and see the old temples ect. BUT because of Covid We coudn't have it. we lost that damn year AND the next year we had to still do the final exams. the people from 2002 were gifted their diploma and got to go on their trip, while WE had to do the Exams and had no TRIP! (still salty.)
Poor 2003 babies, man. Sorry to hear you missed your trip. There's never a good time for a worldwide pandemic, but that was especially bad for you guys!
From the future here, yes you did got married 👰 Yeah 2020 was a dark time, especially in a country that is so used to traditional in-person education. It took so much time to adjust here that the next school year occured a few months behind schedule 💀
yoooo fellow 2002 here let's goooo! I was class of 2021 though (born in Dec lol) so lockdown happened in my junior year and screwed up like everything haha. honestly it's a miracle I passed that semester cause my school DIDN'T freeze our grades unlike most of the other schools around that I had friends in, so my grades PLUMMETED during that spring lmao. also playing Minecraft while listening to the online classes is so valid lol I totally did that with my games too. then senior year for me was just all wacky. my school was a homeschool charter school and was extremely small compared to the public high schools around me so thankfully we were able to be in person the whole year, but we all had to wear masks and had to have our chairs and "desks" (just these weird plastic things you had to place on the chair and sit on to stand up, it was so strange lol) all six or more feet away from each other. thankfully in that spring of 2021 we were at least able to have our prom, as did most of the other schools by me (although i couldn't go cause of reasons with my grades unfortunately haha), and our graduation which was a really great thing to be able to have, but it definitely was extremely strange the whole year and definitely didn't feel at all like the "senior year" I had been waiting for for so long, but it was still a good time. but i definitely always felt for my friends and classmates that were the year ahead of me having to lose out on all that stuff in such an unexpected and fast timeframe. we all suffered in solidarity though i guess, bonded through our united covid/lockdown depression lmao
Not freezing your grades is CRAZY, that must've been so hard!! And yeah I imagine that, despite technically getting a "graduation", it could never feel the same after lockdown. Thanks for sharing! We did indeed bond through solidarity ✊
i am australian and luckily i didn't have the longest lockdown but the pandemic hit right in the middle of highschool for me, year 9-10, so i missed building those really important time management skills and doing harder assignments as well as social skills. i still have some of those bad habits where i just leave really important tasks till they 'go' and i struggle talking to people irl. online school was so hard but i can't imagine graduating during the pandemic so kudos to you!!
I totally relate to this. My grade didn't have to finish any of our classes or write any final exams, so we didn't learn to study difficult material under pressure. I think that's something very important you learn in grade 12 and we totally missed it
yeah... class of 2021 here our graduation celebration events and prom were all pretty normal i think, since things were starting to clear up a little towards the end of senior year. we had an unforgettable night where we went bowling, saw a hypnotist (i got chosen, it was crazy) and took a ferry ride as we watched the sun come up. there was one thing i didn't get to experience, though. i was in concert/marching band throughout middle school and high school, and every 4 years there was this big event where the high school band would go to disney world in florida and walk down main street, perform for evaluation, and even get to sight read various disney scores during a recording session. my older sister got to do it when she was a junior and i was excited for it to be my turn to be part of all that...but sadly, reality had other plans :,) on a more positive note though, over the course of lockdown i became part of a small friend group that got together on tuesday nights over zoom to play jackbox games, and we all grew pretty close. we went on to spend the entire summer after graduation together, just the four of us going out and driving around the state (which is a very big deal cuz i'm a total hermit lol) and enjoying the time we had left before we each went our separate ways. it's very bittersweet to look back on but i'm so incredibly grateful for those three fellow idiots who made the whole experience a lot less miserable.
Aw man, not getting to perform at Disney World sucks! Sorry to hear that. But I'm glad you made some lifelong friendships even in the midst of a worldwide pandemic. I had a similar experience, my friends and I played a lot of Minecraft and Among Us (and some Jackbox too!)

Oh that's sweet! I'm glad you got to have a little celebration of your own 🥰

I’m at the end of my junior year rn and honestly, I want lockdown back
Minecraft in lockdown really hit different

Oh weird! So was the start of the school year pushed back to, like, March? That's wild to think about
@@sketchesbyaidan nah more like instead of June, it started October/November not that many months

@@sketchesbyaidanseriously! i was so mad that my school didn’t 😂 but thank god i still made it through well enough to pass everything lmao
It put an end to our robotics season. I was jv team captain and we were beating varsity overall.
Oh that sucks!! You guys definitely would've won tho. I believe.

That sounds way more fun than my grad lol. Mine was so boring... I did get a nice suit out if it haha
Haha that's looking on the bright side. It was pretty fun but it took a loooot of work to prepare!

Extra Nice 🎓
Congrats on fitting in a week of planning for graduation during covid
Honestly couldn't have done it myself. The fact we had 3 grad presidents helped a lot lmao
You never even hold hands, past you. Sorry bro
