How To: Keybindings in WoW

- A video describing the process of converting from a person who clicks their spells to someone who uses keybindings. I provide generalized-step-by-step instructions using examples of both my own keybindings and my introduction to the method. I also provide footage of my keyboard and mouse actions while playing in battlegrounds, along with tips on how to make the transition as easy as possible.

Great video. I just restarted playing my affl lock again. And i felt totally lost within the keybinds and the tips / tricks my husband tried to give me. But after watching this, i feel a bit more confident again. Hopefully i get the hang of it before MoP goes live haha.

I have watched about 30 videos on keybinds this is by far the best and so easy to understand.I have been a clicker for 7+ years on WOW and I just got a naga trying to learn keybinds its making my arenas So much better now.I used to look down all the time loosing my target. thank-u I did subscibe

I've been playing this game for like 15 years and have never once thought of adding modifiers to the movement keys that's 4 extra buttons!
Carpel tunnel is more a symptom of neglect than a symptom of use. What I mean is carpel tunnel will occur in any environment of repeated movement without a focus on maintaining health of the tool. Even just dragging the mouse around can give you carpel tunnel if you neglect to keep your wrist/elbow/shoulder healthy. With even minor amounts of stretching your wrists and forearms, carpel tunnel should be a non-issue.
If you always have the same "home" for your fingers, then your fingers get trained to know when they are over the proper key. It's the same with typing, if you follow proper technique (or stick with a bad technique for a long time) you can just type without looking at the keyboard. It is the same with keybindings.

@cwoolf123 mouse sensitivity can be found in:
game menu -> interface -> mouse
You shouldn't always have to use W + strafe, most of the time holding down both mouse buttons is all you need. Strafe is mixed in to maintain LOS while moving in arcs/circles.
You don't keyboard turn, you just don't do it. You don't click spells...you definitely don't do it. Good video Xzilend! It's tough to get used to at first but honestly you can pick it up in no time. I'd suggest not doing a baptism by fire and jumping in a 5-man immediately following this. Go out and kill some basic mobs in the world and get the hang of the muscle memory. Then you'll be cash money.

thanks for the vid, i play a demo lock also... since i started playing WoW i have always clicked but since i started getting serious about arena/ rated bgs i trying really hard not to click and its so far alot better keybinding :)
About the movement keys, what I've done I binded my q&e to a&d, that way, walking stays more natural and make it possible to move when you play another game. I've also not unbinded my s key, because even though I never walk backwards, I still want to be able to if I so desire. After that I binded my cooldowns (on my lock's pve spec that is meta and demon soul, and on my pvp spec spell lock and demon soul) to q and e. And I have to say that it works out perfectly for me.

@cwoolf123 Almost anything can be difficult to learn if not learned in a way suitable for the individual player and at a pace the player is comfortable with.
If you are spinning too quickly, this would probably be because your mouse sensitivity is too high. Try lowering it incrementally until you find a sensitivity you like.
Comfortable keybinds is all preference, so I can't really guide you in that. Just start off with a limited amount of spells, and slowly add from there!
this video helpd me out alot but im still abit confused on how you mouse turn yet you have key bindings on your mouse XP il have to look into that abit to understand it more but this helped me out alot thanks!
I'm going to try some of these techniques. Resto druids only need like 8 spells, max so I'm pretty good with using just the mouse and modifier keys, but I need a solution for when I pretend to DPS.
While in general that's a good tip, you want to reserve long-cooldown 'panic buttons' nearer your movement keys so you can still hit them in time. For instance, the paladin bubble or mage ice-block have long cd's, but need to bit hit quickly to save you from dying, if you put them too far away, you may not hit it in time, causing many a frustrating death. @Wabset123 I wouldn't say either one is more difficult than the other (range vs keybindings), but you have to be a lot better at movement to play melee effectively.
Moving with your mouse is the best method to use, I keep Forward and Strafe L/R so that I can continue to move in the times when I cannot use my mouse (ie. running while moving camera). A hybrid use of mouse movement and keyboard movement (not keyboard turning, keyboard turning is VERY bad) is the best system.
@KonradGM I have around 80 keybinds. 6 actionbars * 12 buttons each + 5 or 6 for keys that have dual-purpose through macro techniques
@rollingthunderful You should still keep your fingers on qwe or awd (depending on whether you use q/e or a/d for strafe), as strafe and movement by W is very useful at times. For example, to continue running while using your mouse to change targets, or use mouseover macros.

Im using the Logitech Revolution mouse and running on ESDF. I have bound shift and alt modifier to my two sidebuttons on the mouse and targetnextenemy and push to talk on my "scrollish" sidebutton. Why i have shift and alt on the mouse is quite simple. Its for maximum controll of the flow. instead of working with my littlefinger i use my thumb which is way better for control and faster at reaction. and then i have bound QWRTGCA as my actionbuttons with modefier abillities.
@intoall100 sorry, but everything said is wrong. To get from point A to B do you NEED to drive? No, but it sure makes the journey a lot better. Keybindings only improve gameplay. They improve reaction, accuracy, and multitasking abilities. This corresponds to awareness and survivability in raids, along with increased output (DPS, HPS, TPS). Moving backwards is ONLY useful as a tank, there is not a single example for everyone else where moving backwards is beneficial.
Couple of solutions: 1) If you know you are playing, bring your mouse! 2) If you know you are playing a lot on different computers.. don't bind them to the mouse? These are just suggestions. The primary spells I had on my mouse were scrollwheel-oriented, and I can assure you every mouse you will find at friend's/etc will have a scrollwheel.
another way to start slow is to test them on a target dummy, practice, then go to a BG to see what its really like.
@dartheden it's all personal preference. I am quite agile with my little finger, so I feel no need to move the modifiers.

@Xzilend Yep, true. Im not that agile so the mouse works perfectly for me. Then again i have so many buttons on my mouse i can pretty much bind more stuff then just modifiers :D

I would integrate as little as possible with your mouse until you are comfortable with using keybinds and moving your character/camera with your mouse. Once you are comfortable with that, slowly add more spells to your mouse (I only ever used the left thumb buttons on both my Deathadder and my Naga). I mainly put CC or "OH SHIT!" spells on my mouse so I had very quick and easy access to them. Let me know how it goes!
@JustawayFTW yeah I hate my shaman's keybindings, the totem dropping changes made it slightly easier, but shaman totems in PVP are still extremely annoying to bind.
@insanofamo I don't rebind the two primary mouse buttons, I have my teleport spells on the mouse wheel and my pet's intercept on the two side buttons by the thumb.

So, the main way you move is with your mouse and only move with keyboard sometimes?
I'm trying to get into keybinds, but i'm not sure how to move and when.
Like how should i move with just traveling or during combat?
Think that is done through the actual mouse firmware (razer synapsis, for razer mice) or through a 3rd party program.

Great guide but....i am a old (age) gamer i tried to keybind but its not working for me at all.main problem is i cant type without watching on my keyboard so i cant hit proper key with accuracy needed.lots of mistakes creates flustration so i will stay with clicking(its not bad for me i can top dps metter in bgs and dungeons)

So I use bartender, and have noticed that I can't watch the game and also click all of my spells. Ready to switch to keybinds, but not sure how to integrate use with my mouse? I'm just worried about having difficulty being able to maneuver my camera and still use all of my abilities well. Any Suggestions?
Ye, at the "EliteWoWMacros com" site... there's an ad for an addon, but there's also a bunch of nice, copy/paste macros, rather new, not outdated. Got a sweet traps macro for me hunter :P
@zohar10101 lol so true! I think it will cost me more than a week to learn not to click anymore, I can't put the maximum out of my priest since clicking is too slow. Btw, can you tell how I can switch fast between targets? Enemy/friendly? Bind autoattack also? Or... I don't know :s
I have been clicking for 6years. Got up to 1800 rating in arena. I see the benefit in keybinding and i really have been trying to learn, especially the mouse turning is a big plus. But that is where I have the problem. for instance, when strafing right with the D button, I take it you use your index finger to strafe right, how am i suppose to hit my buttons to the right of that, i.e F,V,B,G,R,T. or do people hold down both mouse buttons to move forward and turn and such. Please help a clicker :0

i am always wondering if you put the shift and whatever in a macro, or is it from the keybinding interface? i have asked around in game and afew places on here but i am not getting any answers
Don't need gamer gear! Regular keyboard/mouse works just as well, just need to add a few more to the keyboard since you don't have the mouse buttons :)
@bloodfalcon7722 As a whole, it definitely seems overwhelming. But if you break it apart into steady, sequential chucks it is a very easy process. What class do you play? I may be able to provide some advice to getting started. You won't regret learning to use keybindings, it is almost a guarantee to vastly improve your gameplay.

Keybinding may take some time and tweaking. But there's an optimal combination for any class and spec. I found an addon that has keybindings for all classes/specs, here: "EliteWoWMacros com"

@Eistroll0Wie0 I find fun in competitive, "fair" fights, or being the underdog, because that is where true gaming skill flourishes. I have actually not played since the 4.0 patch because we were too strong, it took no skill to play, and therefore was not fun for me.

@Critkill Honestly I don't have any specific tips for rogues, keybindings are pretty universal across the classes, and mostly player specific. I'd suggest looking around for GOOD (important keyword there) rogue PVP videos and look at their interface for an idea of their keybindings. You could also ask on arenajunkies (dot) com

its pretty easy to hit the buttons.. the only problem I had was fucking remembering what keys were what lol but that was like 3 yrs ago... I don't even play wow anymore and I still know my keybindings.

@Limundi you don't nothing good comes from slowly walking backwards. The ONLY people with a need for walking backwards are tanks, everyone else has absolutely zero reason to use such a bad method of movement
