That's customer service right there, fixed the issue, saved her money!
Other shops would replace the whole exhaust system; something the customer probably couldn't afford. GOOD CALL on the repair!!!
Didn't even watch the video yet, but this is internet welding...Reeeee YOU'RE doing it wrong!!!🤣🤣🤣
It is not called a welder, it is called a comment generator 😂 Works 100% of the time every time
@@SouthMainAuto Do soldering next!!
@@RainmanRaysRepairs oh you animal!
Those 70K critics would have a stroke if they saw the Campbell's soup can and two hose clamps that held my 62 Fairlane's exhaust together for years!
Hose clamps?? You fancy!!
Eric, I've been welding for 61 years and that weld job looked pretty damn good to me! Great customer service! I wish there were more mechanics like you out there!
Those welds look good to me. As you said, that repair will probably last as long as the rest of the exhaust.
He’s underselling that’ll last the lifetime of the vehicle
Ditto.
One thing I’ve learned and I’m sure Eric has learned, everybody is an expert till they have to do the job and cheers to Eric for helping the lady instead of just saying “ gotta replace everything from catback”. the old stuff will out last any “affordable” aluminized pipe you put on
@@WorkableWax It won't. That salt will eat that sleeve in a couple years. But it will finish off the exhaust in a couple years too. He's not kidding about walker exhaust. I'm in the rust belt too but not as bad as he is and I get three years out of a walker exhaust system. My mid pipe rusted off its flange in three years on one of my Subarus. From brand new to rusting off the flange in three years. Stuff takes a beating.
I was welder certified at the Ray Charles Institute of Technology. My professor was Stevie Wonder. Passed me with highest honors. 😂
😂😂
🤣
Love a good smartass.
@@demonknight7965 Stevie couldn't see any flaws in my weld. 😁
@@jimbeaux1109 🤣
My local shop was sold to a chain with two pretty boys parked behind monitor all day and they do not repair, only replace. God bless you for making an inexpensive repair to buy her some time.
or u go to a muffler shop... say what u want if its not welding to scrap rusted pipe they will do it
Or “ we can’t weld to that pipe because of the rust and the liability. But for $575 we can change that pipe”.
Apparently no enough people went to your local shop and they sold. Buy local
I'm a certified, bonded, fully insured - doin it for 35 years, painter... And I say that weld was freakin beautiful, my guy....
I’m a pro welder. It looks good from my house! Nice job.
I know nothing about welding but I'm sure he did something wrong. 😁
Looked good from my loungeroom in Australia too
I can't even solder...but it looks great from the UK. Nice one Eric. :)
Looks good from Philly..
@@bcad4066 I was thinking just the same... 😁
"Hanging on by a red one" Almost spit out my coffee!! Loved it.
Everybody's a welder until it's time to do welding things👊
Great fix eric I'm referring to the pros in the comment section 🙄 😀
I admire how you look after your customers best interest. Good job!
“Just hangin’ on by a Red one up there.” Precision with Attention to Details. Nice.
It doesn't need to be a masterpiece, just welded and sealed. You are a young man with very old school values and morals. It makes my day when you put out a new video, keep em coming!
From a self taught half *** welder, you are an excellent welder A) and B) customer service, in the fact that you repaired it and saved her money. Ain’t many like you left anymore! Every video you impress me with the fact you are looking out for the customer to save them money. Nearly 50 years ago I went with a friend to visit members of his family in Hornell NY, I believe not to far southwest of you. Pretty country up there
Eric you are an outstanding individual and mechanic. For those of us who can't do what you can, for lack of tools, money or knowledge, you are a blessing to your community. This day and age its hard to know who you can trust. You are a trustworthy man.
Nice job Eric. That sleeve and welding, as you said, will save her quite a lot of money.
Eric, kudos to you for thinking of the customer and working to save her some money with a repair that will pace or exceed the life of the rest of the system. My thought is that many shops would just chase the money and replace most of the system. regards vic
Good job Eric. I have done similar things in my life for customers and myself. My father used to say poor people have poor ways, they can't always justify spending cash to replace something that still has some useful life left in it. I'm retired now but I love seeing a Tech whos not all about just banging them out for the money. Hang in there Brother, and God Bless.
Warms my heart to see an honest & frugil repair person whom really cares for the customers pocketbook........I've recomended you to several friends for that reason alone....keep up the honest and caring work!
Always go the extra mile, I love it. If the critics come out, at least we know they are watching.
Looks good to me! Talk about a convenient time, my Dad got home from the store and in his driveway the front left brake hose went. He asked me to fix it and sense I watch your vids was a piece of cake. Just like you he said" might as well replace both while you are there".
I'm constantly amazed at the breadth of skills that are involved in fixing complex things like cars. Naturally, someone who does one thing their whole career will be an absolute expert at it. But to me, to be pretty good at a bunch of stuff is much more of a feat than to be an expert at one thing. Eric Sir, I think you do an amazing job, especially considering how many different technologies are involved. Thank you for another great video and thanks for sharing 😊
This guy is a rare breed , those around him are very fortunate !
I’m very proud to know there truly caring people still in this world! At first when I started to see you welding without shade protection over your eyes I thought I was going to have to tell you “Wait till your father gets home” But you got the shade on a little later and I’m proud to say don’t have to call Mom. Nice repair!!
If it doesn't fall apart and doesn't leak your fine. I say you did great.
"We just saved this lady more money in 15 minutes than Geico ever will"... Classic!!! 😂😂😂
I've been using those Walker sleeves for years in between full replacement of the exhaust, and or collector ends ... and yea, fully welding tops is often a pain ... as usual, I "like" before I even watch the Vid, I have that much faith in SMA, nice to see you do a reasonable fix and save the lady some money ... and your welding skills are great ... *I love the locking pliers ground idea .... I'm in the eastern PA rust belt so exhaust weak spots don't last long
Super cool of you to be cost conscious for the lady. As far as the welding goes, way better than anything I can do. I would call this one a winner, for both the customer, and you. Thanks for the video, Eric.
Thanks Eric. You helped me fix my car myself. The tire shop left off a caliper bolt. So when I discovered it a hundred miles later on a Sunday. I knew what it needed a fixed it
Did you check if the other bolts were tight?
@@dans_Learning_Curve Good Idea. 👍
why cant every auto repair shop be as honest and go extra mile to try and save some folks some money.
When I watch you and Wes and some of the other guys, I'm always amazed at how many experts there are out there. Don't stop making these. I not only learn a lot, but I'm impressed with you and your wife and kids, and enjoy watching the whole shebang.
I'm a self-taught gas welder. Someone else welding overhead is far superior to me being under the spark shower. Fine work, Eric O!
Eric, you’re a really nice and considerate man. It makes putting your head on a pillow and getting peaceful sleep possible. Your continued is proof of that.
When I'm too achy from playin Shadetree, I relax to watching Eric doing the struggle!
That right there is what you call 'engineering a solution'! Cheaper than a new exhaust, saving the customer money, and working wonders for customer relationship. There's way too many places that would want to rip that exhaust off and charge mega bucks for a cheap after-market replacement. This engineered solution is win-win in my book.
The only thing I "might" have done differently would be to try to weld the inside of the sleeve on the muffler side before the easier part since it's such a pain to get up over the top. Oh also as a tip: if you spray the rubber of the muffler hangar with brake parts cleaner it makes the rubber slimy so the hangar slips right out or in. When the spray dries the rubber goes right back to being a a tight firm fit. $.02
I think it was 5 or 6 years ago, Eric O gave that same tip about the brake cleaner... Can't remember exactly which video, though...
@@steveo6631 It would be funny if the guy who taught me that trick 3 or 4 years ago learned if from Eric...lol
also one of the few decent uses for wd40.
Eric, you saved her alot of money. In today's time it means so much. Lots of respect to you !!
Whether your welding is good or bad, I can guarantee you that mine looks infinitely worse. ;)
I really appreciate your focus on practical solutions to benefit the customer. If there was to ever be a 'registered fiduciary' title in the automotive repair world, it would be you.
"I know one person that will be happy..." Great comment, Eric!
I love the rolling dialog as the repair goes along, you’re saying’ what we’re thinking! BTW, you’re a way better welder than I am, so count me as a fan.
Eric, love how your expressions are the same as what I would say... " she's just hangin' on by a red one up there". Priceless !
Eric, the conscious thought stream UA-camr.
I can't weld very well at All!
Each time i hear the mig welder fan , i feel the need to start mine lol , love that sound of welding 😎
Erick O for the win. The exhaust repair was cheaper than her next grocery bill. Nicely done
THIS GUY IS WHAT I CALL A REAL PERSON SHOWING AND HELPING EVERY ONE. HE IS ENTERTAINING..
The fact that you see & work on so many cars tells me your experience makes the judgement call on your repair. With the cost of parts being so high the more you can salvage is the more you can save a "happy" customer. Keep doing you!!!
What a great guy you are, taking time to determine whether or not a money-savings quick fix is all that is needed. Wanting to save this older woman some significant money was your priority. This is a rarity in today's repair shops. I tip my hat to you!
“Holding on by a red one” lol haven’t heard that term in a long time or “RCH”
Your welding talents are better than mine. You did a great job Eric, no matter what the critics may say....
ayy yay yay ! 10 centavos for a 2in sleeve pipe, thats inflation i tell ya, but ur willingness to help an elderly town folk for cheap is worth its weight in gold, u are a shining star, thanks for posting
I too....just luvv pissin' people off in a couple of seconds...🤪
*GREAT JOB* Eric 🤣👍
love mechanic repair videos
Great customer service and your welding is fine!
Sometimes you try to help the customer out and at the same time make sure the car is safe for them to drive! WELL DONE, SIR! Great video!
If it’s not broken don’t fix it, only fix what’s needed on the exhaust system they all rot out over time. Glad to know you are not a parts changer but a great teacher.
Plan B: Drop the rear muffler on the ground, weld the extension end onto the end of the pipe. Reinstall the muffler, and slide the extension end over the exhaust pipe coming from the engine, and weld it. Have a Coke, and a smile! =)
great welding we need more people like you out there .
I was just discussing this with my 30 year old son yesterday. Back in the 1980's and before we had a bunch of chain muffler stores in the U.S. Then the manufacturers started using stainless exhaust systems, and the whole ballgame changed. The last exhaust I had worked on was our 1992 Eagle Premier, and it came from the factory with a clamp on the muffler so I only paid $49 for a muffler and clamp. Ever since I have sold the vehicles at 10+ years old having never had to repair any exhaust parts.
Oh- and all those "muffler" chains either went belly up, or expanded out into full service, especially brakes and struts, etc.
You did a great job and gave wonderful customer service Eric!
This guy's almost as good a wise ass as he is a mechanic,I like it!
I own a muffler shop in southern Ontario and I do this all the time. I have a pipe bender make life easier.
I'm hoping to find a shop with a pipe bender to make a system for my 1958 Plymouth Suburban. It's the car in my profile picture.
@@dans_Learning_Curve he's not taking the hint Dan! 🤣🤣🤣
I do ALL my own welding, and while I have 30+ years experience in precision sheet metal fabrication, I use a cheap but capable flux core (yes, the weld looks gnarly) welder and it's powered by a 4K generator. Your welds do the job and that's all that really matters. Great work, Eric!
Absolutely. Like I said in my comment, as long as the penetration is good, looks be damned ( to a degree ) when it comes to this type of welding.
As a guy just learning to weld, I appreciate your welding skills. Keep up the great work!
I owned a muffler, Brake and alignment shop for many years. On a job like that I would set it and spot the top flange and remove the muffler and do a good weld on the bench or floor then put it back in place and weld the bottom lip. I always enjoy these videos and I thank God I'm retired now.......
Thanks for the video.
Even though it’s hunting season.
Going the extra mile for us.
👍
I do a lot of that here in PA as well.
A lot better than my poor college student days of using a soup can and coat hanger exhaust repair jobs.
A repair that will last and is economical. Many shops today will not even attempt a repair like this if they can't make a large amount of money. This kind of service is what keeps the customers coming back.
Yup , time for that temporary "permanent" repair LOL 🤣
You need a milwaukee rocket tripod light.that would light up the whole underside of the car.
They put out some good light, I saw a concrete guy using 2 to light up a driveway pour.
Swore up and down when I turned 55 that I would never do this again - just replace the whole thing - then I bought an extended cab ranger with one bad place on the exhaust system and it made a liar out of me! Never say never. There are no shops near this area that would have repaired this. Avoca N.Y. is a lucky town!
i'd have slotted the sleeve and put a couple of clamps on it ...... that's me being too lazy to get the welder out :D
Beat me to it, been there and did that on my Fiat500 only 3 week ago!!! In fairness Eric did mention that option......
even in the non rust belt area, these flanges love to rust a lot faster than the rest of the exhaust.
They intentionally make them crap so they can charge you for the whole kit and kaboodle. Bunch of jerks.
"We just saved her more money in 15 minutes than GEICO ever will." Best line I've heard on UA-cam lately.
I know you're a pro and been doing this forever but please for the love of God don't rely on just closing your eyes when welding. UV doesn't stop because your lids are down. I know ppl who learned that the hard way over time.
@GsaUce Rug Cute but going blind isn't.
Arc-eye, also known as welder's flash, is an inflammation of the cornea and is a result of ultraviolet (UV) radiation released by welding .
I’m disappointed. I came to the comments looking for keyboard welders to troll. Couldn’t find any. Good job Mr. O.
Keep looking haha
Eric O smashing all 100 UA-cam welding commandments in less than 15 minutes.👍
lol That welding is A+ for the working conditions and the quality of metal. I was quite surprised.
What to go Mr. O, not up-selling your customer on an exhaust system she ultimately didn’t need
Always take care of the people that take care of you and you will have loyal customers for the life of your business
With that sawzall I can see how the catalytic converter thieves are in an out so quick. Great video!
No Eric not everyone can do it, but you do. It's easy to criticize another man's efforts, but I think you do so much better than all those critics. Keep on doing what you do, helping others as much as you can and God's blessing will be on you.
Saved her hundreds of dollars in a whole new exhust. Nice job!
As an ASE, CSI, IRS, CIA certified welder with 648 years of experience...(insert pedantic welding jargon).
Looks better than the last weld I did, that's for sure. You probably saved that customer $1000 given inflation. Too bad your shop is so far from my neck of PRNY, or I'd be sending my family to you for their repairs. Keep up the awesome work and the great videos.
When "Big Sam" {u.s. gov.} added all the polution controls, IN 1973, I quit being a diy home mechanic--in other words I do NOT work on auto's any more...My family is not too happy about that, these day's I just fix stuff by throwing money at it and I have stopped doing that too. BIG A to you for the exhaust fix.
You don't need a certificate Mr O I've watched your videos way back when you became UA-cam star and you always did a good job!
Welding on youtube, from what I have seen, is the BEST!!! So many helpful, supportive comments. I bet it never gets old!! 😛 Keep up the solid work bud!! Have a great week!
Reminds me of when I was 16 working on my 1946 Dodge exhaust with a hacksaw, clamps and JB Weld.
You're doing GREAT. I had mechanics charge me 120$+ just to take out the MIG welder with...no gas, and "weld" the broken flange with cold tacks of unshielded wire on rusty wet full of road salt metal that they didn't bother giving even of trigger pull of wire wheel or abrasive handwaving. I fixed it with 2 stainless hose clamps and HVAC galvanized sheet metal. It outlasted the "welding" by 5 years.
Love to watch every episode, I watch you at home an at work on break. Learn a lot even know I’m a seasoned mechanic. I believe you can’t know everything. Lee up the great work.
A man who puts his welds on UA-cam truly does not care about his comments section - brave man
It's ME! I happy to see ya did a awesome Job... And phooey on those people who do nothing but WHINE and Complain shame on them...
Explained what a red one is to my wife. The look on her face was priceless.
I have learned to post anything that can be interpreted as a negative comment or critique is met with vile replies from the dedicated followers!
With that said it is a great repair! I will keep my question, comments to myself.
Always like that your trying to save the customer money Eric. I have a lot of respect for mechanics that are honest
Nice job.
The age of excess is over and we all need to accept that people need to save money.
Means less brand new and more bandaids.
Thank you for not being the typical mechanic that wants to rob his customers.
I've been a mechanic in hard times and did what I could to keep people rolling safely and economically down the road.
I just started an automotive tech course at my community college. Watching your videos, I'm learning a lot of little tricks and things to make repairs and installs a little easier. Thanks!
You are a good man and a super mechanic to save your customer money like that! I need you for my mechanic. 🛠
You done a very good job , I have done it for 8 years 7 years with a stick welder I wood bend the rod to weld the top
Makes me feel good to see Eric using the same $40 welding helmet I bought on Amazon.
Good man. Saving customers money.
