Subaru Outback Repair Series: #1 Fixing The Leaking Exhaust Flange
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 лют 2020
- In this video I am working on a 2014 Subaru Outback 2.5 that came in with the all to common rotted rear exhaust flange. You can fix it a few ways and one of those ways is just to chopped out the flange and replace it with a sleeve pipe as I show in this video. - Enjoy!

You can't beat a guarantee like that ... "It will last as long as it lasts."
Kind of like "lifetime" warranty. They don't mean *your* lifetime.
@@sp1nrx Here a lifetime warranty literally means five years. A ten year warranty still means ten years. Go figure.
60 feet 40 seconds. It’s guaranteed until you pass the garage door.
At Ford we guarentee that “It will last as long as it last” with our lifetime fluid. 🎉😂
This is amazing. This series of videos just covered everything that I need to repair on my wife's Subaru. Now all I have to do is dig through the three feet of snow we have up here on the Tug Hill to find her car. Thanks, Eric!
44 years ago I did this exact repair on my GF's Firebird. 2 clamps no weld. Some people buy flowers. We've been hitched since March '78.
In sickness and in health, for muffler clamps and muffins, till Death do us part...by the laws of this State, of God Almighty, and the Haynes Manual, I now pronounce you husband and wife.
So I guess reese -- not a sponsor -- provided the engagement balls for those hitches 😂😂😂😂😂
I used a soup can on my Chevelle, stopped the back fire, clamped the can with some blue gasket maker. Worked great. I used a soda can on my sweet Geo Metro, quieted it down a lot! I did exchange numbers with a young lady back in my youth when I helped her with chains on a mountain pass when it was snowing, she was in an early 70's Camaro.
@@AaronBelknap hope you then told her that Camaros should stay in the garage during winter
It always amazes me at how versatile a general mechanic has to be, welding skills, mechanical, electrical etc. Surprisingly, the main area guys fail at are the business owner problems, which are a completely different skill set.
I love how you prognosticate what the you tube “know it alls” will probably say in comments and head it off. Keep it up.
Wow, painted the exhaust repair. That’s love.
Great job on the exhaust. The exhaust flange on my Subaru Legacy broke the other day. It's stainless steel and looks custom made. A new stainless one was about $1000 and mild steel front to back about $600 ( This is in the U.K. ). Luckily I had a small brain wave. I took the siamese back end off and brought it to a metal shop. The guy TIG welded it, did a beautiful job, and charged me about $30......Result!!.Enjoy your videos...
Pipe expanders are wonderfully helpful tools.
I work in the steel building industry. The way you handled the exhaust is familiar. Beat to fit, tack it in, weld 'er up, (paint to match optional). Gotta love Eric O. and South Main Auto! Good morning to Mrs. O., too!
Just got home grabbed a beer 🍺logged in to SMA and 4 new videos I am in heaven
“Push push push push” literally had me rolling on the floor. love it.
Great repair on the exhaust, I was impressed by the way you protected the rest of the rusty undercarriage from paint overspray with cardboard ,Great work
"Now it will last as long as it lasts... Guaranteed"....... hahahaha
100% true statement
"He also promises that "If it's in stock, we have it!"
Cuttin', hammerin', weldin', the classic SMA video!
"Stretchage" just love all these new words
I literally did a job just like this but I never thought to paint it. Thats why you're the best.
Easy! But not trivial. Great video.
A garage owner who saves his customers MONEY. Damn where can I find one ?
Ha, I've watched all your vids Eric since becoming a viewer last month. You go to the shops here in town for a repair, they tip toe around the fix with their little tools. You on the other hand know how to get the job done with a selection of hammers and commonsense. I've learned plenty - thanks!
4 vids in my sub box, day made...
Haha, sounds like my car! I gotta do my flange too! So glad your video popped up!
OMG that rubber hanger popper would have come in handy for me like 3 times in my life, but OMFreakingG it would have been SOOOOOOOO HELPFUL AND TIME SAVING. I hate it thats why I have so many random tools and everyone comes to me to ask to borrow or have me help. That's also why Harbor Freight is such a wonderful place spending ~$10-30 on a tool you might only use for that job doesn't hurt like a name brand $100 one job use. Those always end up the open-box special, which I have one of however I did not use it just realized the HF one was 1/3 the price and had .25" more clearance that I required.
I have been on overload watching all your videos, love your work! I wish more mechanics had the integrity and morals you have. I have my project cars being a 1976 Datsun 280z and a 85 Corvette but also spend lots of time with my friends 1978 Pace Car Corvette. Great videos and thanks for sharing your adventures with the world.
Nice to see you with a quality welder that just works well and does a good weld on old exhaust like that. Millers are the BOMB, I have 5 of them, all different for different applications, and all fantastic. You know what to expect before you pull the trigger.... every time. You can hear the consistent power in the machine on that application. The same with every pull of the trigger. A good and practical repair done right. I like machines that make the operator look good. Not that you need any help.... but what are friends like Big Nasty for anyway! BRAVO Eric.
Yeah I really like the fact that you tried to save people money instead of just throwing money at everything like a lot of the other shows do cheers to you. God I hate those guys that call everything budget builds and all they're doing is throwing money at everything well hell anybody can do that anybody can throw money at a project and get it accomplished yeah I'm venting
Love the vids. I learn a lot. I usually tack the muffler side & remove muffler to fully weld that side. Nice job.
I HATE when my guys forget to paint patch pipe. Thanks again!
WOW! some episodes for the weekend.... JOY!
Yeah! BBQ paint! I painted my whole open cargo trailer with BBQ paint, using a roller and a brush! Turned out beautifully.
Eric,
Great job and video - thank you! With that paint its now a Fordaru.
SMA#1
God bless
Paul
I like the series action MR O! KEEP EM COMING!!! When my 01 GMC Sierra needs all of the front end kibbles and bits replaced I will call up and make an appointment and then drive across country to SOUTH MAIN AUTO!!
Superb job. You make it look easy.
An old engineer told me years ago that same size fits will never go, there must be a little bit of play.
The stainless steel exhaust systems last a hell of a long time, but selling a kidney to afford it is a bit rough lol.
Where are you getting kidneys that cheap? Having had older Toyotas that needed their exhausts replaced frequently, I know that what ISN'T covered by muffler shops "lifetime" warranties adds up quickly, and their work deteriorates faster when they slice off good flanges from intact pipes to fit their crappy connector pieces in. I'd rather pay for OEM stainless parts that I (or they) can bolt in. If SMA was in my area I'd be more willing to to trust mechanics.
P Schmied, ooow i get them from the local supermarket lol.
I didn't say live or human kidneys did i :)
canuckguy worried
Oh yes i like a good joke or misdirection :-D
Makes the brain fizzle :-D
canuckguy worried
LOL maybe you could have used "Grinding paste" on your date, if you were lucky of cause :)
I feel like i'm wriiting a mechanics carry on film ha ha :-D
I turned this one on before the notification. Must be a free tip Friday kind of day.
The only repair shop to ever paint an exhaust repair for corrosion protection... Ever!
I gotta say... I like the camera shake when Eric beats on stuff. It gives a liveliness to these videos. Never get a solid mount Eric O!!
Eric, my daughter has same car, so all info and tips are helpful to me !! Thanks !!
Nice! Had this happen on an impreza near Syracuse during the Winter. It sounded like a stereotypical buddhist kung fu gong from the movies because the muffler was banging against the midpipe.
I wanted to change the muffler anyway, so I got the cheapest SS Borla, and I clamped a split flange onto the midpipe.
Of course three years later the split flange is rusting like crazy...
just brought some ugly memories of exhaust repairs in the past in the driveway on gravel no power tools (couldn't afford them that is why I was doing the repair
Good golly Mrs. O; Eric’s got a 4 part series that I’ve gotta say... Yippie Yi Ki Yay 😁
Yup, Subee #4 hole always a PITA. I watch your videos to the end. It makes me feel good that you have the same problems as I do, haha.
I watch Eric for moral support. It's comforting to see a pro have to deal with some of the automotive BS us amateurs do on an irregular basis. Thanks Eric!
Thxs Eric nice series of repair's..
Another great job completed
You have the welder set perfectly!!!
Nice welding! Great video, thanks!!
thanks eric , great job.
I did the exact same job with hose clamps and the exhaust glue stuff in October. Found the 2 1/8 id sleeve slipped right on and clamped
That one size fit all spanner is a really useful tool!
Yeow! 4 videos! Thanks Eric!
I did this same type of repair on a early 2000 Malibu using a 2 inch stainless steel band clamp that I think worked out great.
Great job again like always
I cannot believe Jeep has not sent you a box of new hats! 365. A new one for each day of the year! =)
I use an exhaust joint sleeve that is slightly bigger than pipes available here in the UK , when you tighten it up it compresses onto the original pipe, like a scaffolding joint clamp , VW use something similar on lots of models, ,great batch of videos Eric , REGARDS MIKE
Eric O saves the day!
Good video Eric O
Always great vids man wish there was mechanic like u around here I would love to ask you a few questions about my grand am
I've seen those couplers labeled 2" OD and 2" ID - so it is measured as an outside or inside diameter, slip on like a glove.
Hmmmm Eric painted the fresh welds for protection.... Never seen anyone go that far before. NICE!!!
That surprised me. It's not every day you see a shop paint the exaust.
How long will paint last on an exhaust header?
It's amazing how much of "fixing cars" seems to be just beating on things.
Wow you just made America Great Again!
You know what else would make that repair last longer? Move to a warmer climate. Good job giving her the beans with the pipe expander. Funny story, my buddy and I had our other buddies kid brother out in his van looking for a duct stretcher (think metal air duct), years ago. Poor Jimmy was out there close to a half hour before we let him in on our little prank. Good thing we didn't ask for the metric adjustable too
Great video. I think i have the same exhaust pipe tool set.
Jeez Eric I'm from Cali and I couldn't eimagine the exhaust rotting off on a 6 ish year vehicle. Those salt roads are the devil.
Good job .
I normally clamp the awkward side but that mainly as my welding sucks lol .
Didn't look too rusty for a 6yr NY outbuck
flat 6 3.0 is a favourite of mine, get some baby lambs oil sprayed underneath and in the rockers etc and they do good .
Like Meemaw used to say: Good for another 100,000! :)
Hey... I bet that'll work way better than the 4 aluminum pop cans and hose clamps I used when I was a kid and had a blowout on my old beater back in the late 80s. Mine only lasted a week.
pro's used soup-cans...........
@@throttlebottle5906 yeah, but I didn't have a soup can.. I was 18 so soda cans and pizza boxes were all I had to use.
O man. 4 videos from SMA in 1 day? Today is not going to be a productive day at work.
Good splice in. I always manage to burn through the thin factory exhaust.
I live down in pa and I think they must use more salt in NY. You get some real rusty NEW cars.
Probably depends on the Part of PA. In Pike and Wayne county with dirt roads they rust just as bad. Mom has a 2014 outback. Did all the pipes last year and she only has 65k.
only "three hours later" lucky it wasn't days or weeks, then trying to recall where you left off and how to start again ;)
2 minutes into this video and it looks just like the one I just completed... Painfully saving the exhaust....
And I broke my pipe expander in the process.
Might be grey, but at least you have it. Another really good video!
I needed one of those rubber hanger poppers the other day
He aint no body shop tech mama! Look at them paint'n skillz
Those are good blades! That's the fastest sawzall I've ever seen!! ;)
New blades make a huge difference.
Teeth ON the blade are important; found that out cutting old plastered drywall; took the teeth off a new blade in only a few feet of cutting. I never expected that, when I cut metal without losing teeth like that.
@@markh.6687 The plaster likely had sand (abrasive) component. I've found that in older buildings too.
@@stephenarling1667 House was build in early 1941, so that makes sense. Bi-metal blades didn't last much longer; I would up sledging/prying off the drywall (which was in narrow factory-cut strips, not 4 x 8 sheets like later in the century).
"what do you want me to do! Chop it off?" 😂😂😂
Just increased the value of that Subaru by $10 with that paint.
Eric o the pro!
I watched you weld on my Hi def monitor now my eyes are burnt. You will be hearing from my lawyer cause you didnt warn me....lol
Wish I had those flange tools and a compressor I end up using angle grinder to cut it off and Muffler clamps usually I can get repair tube that will fit with OD in IDs pre stretched
Damn... know that's high definition!!! New camera Mr. O?
Great job..
you can take a vw/audi flextube in good quality , just cut and tight, then later ,after 4-5 year you just change the flextube, subaru have good steel in their tubes
Did this on my nissian i had about 5 years ago but was clamped. Worked fine for the time i had it. Not sure anymore since i haven't had it in 4 years.
did the same repair too my car..... 2 clamps and done..
Great and timely video...if you clamped it, what would you use for a clamp?
Wow! Nice little series! Gives me something to watch while I'm down 🤒😷. Thanks E!
Uhhhh hope you feel better soon Cuba
Eric, mechanic video, oatmeal, lunch time ... perfect.
Nice repair mister O, don’t have salt on the roads in Fort Lauderdale Florida
It’s a Subie smorgasbord today!
Sweet 4 vids
I was surprised to see rusted exhaust pipes because the OEM exhaust pipes of my Honda Elements have been stainless (and we salt out roads heavily in Chicago). The only exhaust parts I've ever had to replace on them since 2004 are the cat converter heat shields.
You don't work on too many Toyota sequoia's do you or forerunners Easter picks up some of those butter oh what you got is good good good film you're a good producer!
I always paint my welds so the rain don't wash them away!!!
You good Welder.
Subaru here in California is the most unpopular car out here. Very few of them on the road.
One person likes the sound of loud exhaust on the boxer four.
I remember in the ol' days wrapping exhaust leaks with that tape crap.. kept it going quiet for awhile.. in bad cases a soup can sliced apart so you could wrap that around with cement too.
@xIntoThePitx Aluminum soda can, high-temp silicone, and hose clamps.
Battleship Grey my Dad always said! didn't what shade!
instead of BBQ paint, you can shoot with Slip-Plate graphite spray. Goes on like paint and repels water. I use it on underbody ground connections that I'd like to keep clean..being graphite, it conducts fine, but works well on any surface you'd like to keep corrosion free.
