I am lucky for being born with a naive mindset on lying, and a gigantic case of stubbornness. The game told me that there was no need to kill anyone and I full on believed it. And I was so hardheaded that I refused to do anything else from that point on. I was so stubborn when I was fighting her, I didn't even consider the option to fight her. I just Mercy'ed her, because again, I have the mind of a fucking child when it comes to trusting something. And it worked out. HURRAH FOR BEING STUBBORN!
Anyways, nice episode man!
The worst part about killing Toriel? Even if you go back and not kill her, Flowery still knows and mocks you.
So... Of all people, Sans saved Toriel's sanity?

I haven't played through Undertale on my own yet and have only been able to experience it through some LPs that I've been following. But, despite my limited knowledge of the game, I can still say that this was both an excellent and enjoyable spotlight for Toriel. I LOVE your presentation of the information, DiGi! Your videos are so top-notch... I cannot wait to see this channel soar to the top! The amount of TLC that you put into these is beyond apparent. I cannot wait for the next episode!
+Rabbit Plays Games - Ah yeah, i don't know how much you've seen of the story but it really is quite a lovely experience if you play it yourself with no prior knowledge to anything in it. I literally knew nothing about the story or most of the characters when i started playing and it just added an incredible sense of enjoyment from seeing them all for the first time and getting to know who was who. Check it out if you ever get the chance to do so!

Ah, Undertale. An amazing title people put off simply because "it's everywhere". I'm super glad you're looking at it, and really look forward to seeing more characters from it! I mean, I care more about the UT cast than a lot of characters in other games. They're really great.

I honestly didn't expect to like it as much as i did, and further more i'm never really the kinda guy to jump on hype-trains just because everyone else is on them. Not usually, anyway. I tend to be late to the party with a lot of things and i only get in to something if it actually interests me, not because my friends are interested in it.
But yeah, Undertale was a really great experience for me and i wanted to speak about these characters while they were fresh in my mind :)

Its a huge coincidence that immediately after i subscribed to this channel, this is the first video that you make. Toriel is my favorite character in undertale, and one that get's better and better the more you think about it. Therefore, seeing you feature her is a good thing in my opinion.

Man, Toriel's heartbreaking story in the start of the game makes it impossible to even think about putting the rest to the side. She's such a strong character for the start of your journey.. Like the actual tutorial's a bit slow, but once you reach her house and get through the events that follow, that's when you realize there's so much more to this game.
Really liked this one, man. Can't wait to see who's up next! haha.

I love Toriel, she's one of my favorite characters in the game. She's been through so much heartache in losing people (including two who are a BIG part of the story in whole) but stays kind and positive. Yet, she's not a pushover as some nice characters end up being. Her relationship with one of the other characters (you know who if your played it) is so funny and sweet, too. (damn puns)
And yeah, I like to think that she's a lot like me. I know her name sounds like mine, and it weired me out xD

+Chimera - You know, funny thing is i didn't. In any other game, when i do something that i'm not entirely happy with i usually reload a save and take a different approach to things. But for Undertale i didn't, i just cleared that first play-through right to the end and then went back in to do a second play-through. At the time i didn't even know the game remembered your actions, i literally went in to this title fresh without any major knowledge about it so i didn't even know the game tracks your actions across save states. Knowing i had killed Toriel, my usual reaction would have been to reload and start over ...and yet for some strange reason this time i didn't do. How bizarre XD;;
+Chimera I remember killing toriel not meaning to, and just thinking how horrible I was. In my grief, I reloaded my last save and got her to move without fighting and then flowey scolded me. This was one of the most powerful aspects in this game for me.

Going from the "spoilers ain't shit" perspective... There's an argument to be made that Toriel is a boss in a different way for players that want to achieve Genocide. Unlike would-be pacifist players who can kill her on accident, Genocide players will be fully aware of the situation (especially since this is probably their second or third playthrough) and thus have to deal with the reality of what's coming head on. Where most games go through all the dog-kicking in the world to make you hate villains and thus have more desire to see them dead/beaten, Toriel stands in your way and ends up being the biggest emotional kick to the head you can get. You have to kill her intentionally to get that ending you want, and that knowledge in of itself will be the biggest problem.
So. Much as Undertale's hype backlash gets to me, I absolutely have to give it props for presenting us with a boss that challenges us not on a difficulty level, but on the level of conquering our own positive emotions for a goal. You can go into this game with the most unhealthy mindset possible, sick to death of the tumblr memes, fed up with the over-exposure, disgusted with the porn and furious this game beat out Ocarina of Time in a major online poll... And *still* be beaten into the ground by your own emotions just because of how effectively this game, Toriel specifically, can make you feel for it.
+JacksonJin The game's biggest strength comes from the players connection with the characters, the more you like them the harder it is to even want to go for the Genocide path where you kill them. The game even actively discourages you from wanting to go for the other endings because you'd essentially be screwing the happiness of everyone you cared about in the game but the temptation of seeing all the endings and defeating new challenges (Sans especially) is often enough to make players go through with it....and then regret it when faced with the consequences.
However this is also arguably where Undertale can falter, if the player doesn't connect with the characters or doesn't like them then a lot of the weight to the game is gone. You won't get anywhere near as much out of the game if you can't connect to it's characters which is a legitimate flaw with the game and something that's entirely subjective based on the player and how they experience the game.
It's sort of like reading a novel. If you get invested in the characters and the story then chances are good that you'll like it overall. But if you don't like the characters and the story then the whole thing kinda falls flat and it'll feel like a chore and a waste of time reading it.
I never played undertale before, but thanks to people playing the game on UA-cam, I knew one of the biggest reasons for the game being as popular as it is was because of characters like Toriel. So it was pretty cool to see this video in my sub box. The whole time, I was waiting for you to bring up your mistake, and I was not disappointed when you did at the end of the video. I hope you continue the great work.

I already had a pretty good amount of knowledge of Undertale before I bought it because of Tumblr so my first playthrough was a pacifist run but that didn't stop me from enjoying the game and Toriel is one of my favorite characters and seeing this video in my feed made me happy, but pretty much any day you upload is a good day. I can't wait for your next Who Dat.

I though you haven't been making videos for a while, only to find stupid UA-cam has been leaving videos out of my sub box! Sorry for missing your NiGHTS episode, but having watched it now, I think it's your best episode yet because of all the passion you have for NiGHTS and her games!
But on to Toriel, I think she's one of the best characters in Undertale! Her friendship with Sans is one of my favorite aspects of their characters, but I also love how well-done Toriel's motherly traits are, but that she's also very clearly strong with both will and magic! Goatmom forever!

yeah that was my reaction too! i did that on my very first run as well, thinking the exact same things. like ok this is a RPG right, i know how these work, when a major character blocks your way or is testing you all you gotta do is hit them a few times and they'll just step aside and let you throu- OH WAIT DID SHE JUST DIE?!?!?! WHAT!?!?! NO WHAT HAVE I DONE HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN!!!?!?! **RESET**
hehe then Flowey pretty much taunts you with knowing what you did, i found that kinda....creepy O_O i think most people will make this mistake on their first run, not everyone but those who are expecting the game to work like any RPG will make this mistake. as i saw in another video, it stated that this is a very important mistake to make, it only drives home further just how important your choices are.

+I Hate Video Games - Glad you liked it :) As for ..erm ...'that' character. I don't know. I tried to avoid some spoilers in this episode, i kinda tip-toed around them and that character is a pretty major story-driven character. If i did do an episode on them it would be a long time down the line so most people can experience the game for themselves first. We'll see though.

This was an interesting go round since I think this might of been the first character you've done that wasn't older than I am (I'm 21 btw). I don't mean that with any disrespect, it's just that since you've started the show you've done characters that have been from older series/video games, while Undertale is very new, released September of last year.
So as for the review itself I liked it wanting to know more about Toriel (and Undertale as a whole) it gave me some real insight into the character and while it did spoil some stuff it still kept some stuff hidden and if I ever wanted to I could go into the game half-blind. Good job as always DiGi I hope you continue to do great man I look forward to next time.
P.S. I was interested in the game and decided to check out a lets play of the beginning, unfortunately it was a suicide run and at the end after Toriel was killed my was response was "NOPE, I'm not going on this feels trip today" and decided not to watch the rest.

So I guess you could say that your first playthrough really *got your goat*!! Any more Undertale characters on the way? Because that'd be great! But your other videos are great too!
This review was good, but I'm a little let down on the lack of discussion on how she treats Asgore at the end of the game. It should be noted that her reaction to her kids dying was to immediately ditch Asgore, steal Chara's corpse and live a life of solitude in the Ruins. When she reappears her first instinct is to berate an already emotionally exhausted Asgore (who didn't have his own Sans, mind you) and tell him he was doing his job wrong, despite the fact that she neglected her duties as a partner and left Asgore to rule the Underground while he was as his absolute weakest. On top of this, every one of her interactions with Asgore after the initial meetup are snappy and honestly outright mean.
I feel like there's a harsher side to Toriel that UT fans ignore in favor of her sweetness, but I think she deserves better than that and this side should be explored just as much as the side she presents the player.
With all that being said, I really love all the effort that goes into these videos and I would recommend these to anyone, I'd also like to thank you for giving artists like Sami work through commissions!

3. If you look at Toriel's sprites she has fangs when her mouth opena and they are not visible when her mouth is closed.
4. When Azriel is in his final form he has giant draconic wings as well as giant claws.
And to stop people from saying "Can't be dragons they are fuzzy and have floppy ears." Well take a look at Falkor the luck dragon from The Never Ending Story, a fuzzy dragon with big floppy ears.

I killed Toriel too... I standed there motionless for like 5 minutes... I didn't mean to, and I was sad, and then I though... "This game is fucking aweseome" but I was still sad, and I kept playing with that desition I made, that teached made me promise to not lay a finger on no one in the entire game. MOTIVATION.
Still I'm glad that I took that desition, a lot of emotion and feelings came from that, it made it a great game and experience for me.
Killing Toriel in the first playthrough of Undertale was meant to happen, to make you realize you're not playing a typical RPG anymore. You murder an important character, someone you grow to love very quickly, all because she got in your way. But this isn't your average video game where YOU as the protagonist do no wrong, instead you need to learn that the protagonist(still YOU) can do wrong, and must be punished for it, to learn a valuable lesson. To learn through error is the strongest method to knowing between right and wrong. I think DookieShed has the best video to explain this point.(titled "Why you should kill Toriel") Yes it's terrible to kill Toriel the first time, but it's the most valuable part of getting the proper experience of Undertale.
Sadly for me, I haven't played Undertale, and I can't allow myself to play it. It's far too spoiled for me and I know I won't be able to experience the game the right way. I know that killing Toriel wouldn't be an accident I can make, and I can't learn in that moment that I fucked it all up. I wouldn't be able to spend the rest of the game thinking that I should've spared her, and being reminded of it by the other characters who are just as well attached to Toriel as I would've been. Their interactions with Toriel suddenly stopped and they didn't know that she died behind closed doors, They can only wonder what happened. But I'd know, and proceed to feel bad about it.
But alas, I can't have any of that, and I think it crushes me far worse than if I did have the chance to play Undertale unspoiled.

What made me love Undertale was the graphics, the characters, and the music.... y'know.... the three things about the actual game people talk about... they just apply memes to it....

I COMPLETELY Agree with this! And all of these reason are why I absolutely LOVE Toriel... Eh, not in the adultery way. She to me represents something great, her endearing nature represents that warm feeling that I've felt in my darkest moments, directly after and during that strong feeling courage that has kept myself going, and this has also taught me to be a good person to the best of my ability, and if you ask my friends or family members what they think of me, they would tell you that I am a very nice, yet sometimes sarcastic person, but despite my hardships I've faced, I've still managed to be an empathetic person. So for me, Toriel represents that, the warmth in me that comes in my most dark or lonely moments. And, once again NOT for the... Adultery reason, but for the emotional one.
The two Characters that I am most connected to are Toa Tahu, from the BIONICLE series, because he was by first BIONICLE, and also because of his strong and courageous personality. And Toriel.

You're right, man. toby intended for us to kill Toriel in our first play, even though the last Froggit drops a hint that you "may need spare someone who doesn't have a yellow name". Like everything else, it was genius, but rough. He wanted us to feel bad, remorseful, and try to change it. Part of what made this game a true masterpiece. And the music.. It really set the perfect mood for that confrontation. Heartache still makes me emotional when I hear it thanks to my actions in my first play.
Props, toby. One hell of a job you've done.
+Jerade Hensley - I know i personally got more emotional feels from my second run knowing i had killed Toriel during the first run. Especially since there's some extra pieces of dialogue/text that occurs during the second run if you kill her the first time. That kinda blew my mind. Toby really did make something special here with this game. It's unlike any other RPG i've ever played, that's for sure.
Basically if you met toriel in real life:
Toriel: Greetings, my chi-
Frisk: OH MAH GOD A TALKIN GOAT *Smashes with a burnt pan*
Toriel: *HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN TO ME?!*
Actually I would stand, be shock that a talking, humanoid, female goat is talking to me. I would then listen in admiration and curiosity

I like Torials ears, they give an illusion of long flowing hair. on another note: when people draw her, they usually don't depict her with heart shape eyes. Has anyone else noticed that?
