I often compare NiGHTS to Captain Falcon: two well-known characters from different companies, starved out of their own games and reduced to 3rd party or crossover games both from the start or DLC.
I know. Balan Wonderworld is the closest we'll ever have to that NiGHTS nostalgia ever again, being made by former members of the OG Sonic Team and all.
I can see why. The gameplay is very different from what most people know. It's not something that not a lot of people would like, let alone love. Probably that's why Nights is only a cult classic. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy playing it. But I can only play it for a few minutes until I get tired of it. I usually play it in short bursts
@@teneesh3376 Nights has always been one of those games that can't really be freshened up without making drastic changes to it. Sadly a lot of franchises that get that treatment end up being a massive failure because they remove the core of the game that made it fun in the first place and replace it with gimmicks. The Wii sequel I thought was fun to play but it did nothing new and had no replay value at all. Also the story in parts was a bit of a let down in hindsight. The Saturn game with no ingame cutscenes, voice acting etc required a little imagination from the player to fill the gaps. In Journey of Dreams the characters of Helen and Will are a bit cardboard and I find Reala cringy rather than sinister which is how I used to picture him. There is an exhaustive list of suggestions of how to reimagine this franchise but honestly I doubt we will see anything else of it.
i know Nights is a good being and such but if i saw purple flying british jester in purple spandex with no nose and floating limbs then i would freak out.
I know right? NiGHTS is such a gorgeous creature. About NiGHTS's gender, it really depends on the person's opinion. NiGHTS looks like a girl, but I personally think that NiGHTS is a hermaphrodite.
What's so interesting about all this is, I actually saw Nights in one of my dreams when I was a little kid, and they introduced themselves to me. I had no recollection of ever having heard of them before our meeting, but when I woke up I had the sudden urge to look up the character. When I found out there was a game about them, I flipped out! Nights has been close to my heart ever since.
One of SEGA's fallen heroes. If they were ever to make a 3rd NiGHTS game, I wish they wouldn't rush it like they did with its sequel, not saying that it's bad, I loved the game. The 3rd game has to be good enough in order for NiGHTS to make a comeback. But hey, a person can dream right?
@@Falling_Stars64 I feel that if they did make it they'd be a better Assist Trophy simply because their reliance on flying would make it very difficult to be a decent character without being incredibly broken. Sure they could glide along the ground, but that doesn't feel like NiGHTS at all.
I think I cried tears of joy when I heard they were making a sequel. I'd had literal dreams for a decade where they made a sequel and I loved it, only to wake up, realize there was no sequel, and start sobbing. I'm not even joking -- I wanted it THAT much.

The first time I ever saw NiGHTS was in Sonic Riders. Something about the character visual appearance made her my favorite Sega character I'd ever seen right there and then. I went and played all of the NiGHTS games I could at the time and even stumbled upon your fansite. Hearing you analyze NiGHTS in this video helped me understand what I like about her character design so much a lot more than I used to. This is top-notch stuff, man.
haha, I can relate to immediately liking a character just from appearance in a seperate game. i fell in love with Silver the Hedgehog after playing as him in Mario and sonic at the Olympic winter games.
+DiGi Valentine I think Nights' jester hat might also be emblematic of her nightmaren side. As they sit they kind of look like greater demon ram horns. Let's not also forget that she has sharp cat-like pupils much like a demon would. To wrap up this aspect with a nice little bow, take into consideration the color that is used to represent evil in a lot of Japanese media. Typically if they are trying to show a character has an aura of evil about them they will use a shade of purple. There might be even more subtleties to her design that I'm not seeing too, but that's just something I've noticed.

i love the artwork for Nights's image in this video - its so sharp and clean. If you think of Yuji Naka as the dad to both Sonic and Nights, that would sort of make them brother and sister. Id love another NiGHTS game but i dont see it happening anytime soon... will have to stick with the plentiful playable cameos she makes in other games till then.
I always viewed NiGHTS as female! Also, this was one of the games that made me fall in love with the (old) Sega and Sonic Team. NiGHTS into Dreams for the Sega Saturn literally blew my 7~8 year old mind. Great video as usual, DiGi! Can't wait for more from you.

The Saturn is probably my favorite video game console to date (maybe tied for first with the SNES), so I was all over a lot of the big releases when I was a kiddo! ^^ As of right now, my favorites are mostly the RPGs and action-adventure titles that were available on it. Magic Knight Rayearth, Albert Odyssey, Panzer Dragoon Saga, The Legend of Oasis, Shining the Holy Ark... I could be here all day gushing about them all!
+Rabbit Plays Games - Ah yeah, there were a LOT of RPG's on the Saturn. Especially in Japan, they had like ..three parts to Shining Force 3. Lol, we only got Part 1 here in the UK and the other two parts in the series were never translated! XD;; We were lucky enough to get Panzer Dragoon Saga though, which was brilliant. Sadly i never finished that, i borrowed it off a friend and had to return it to him so i never got to see the game right the way through. It's a pretty rare game to find now, it's apparently quite expensive to buy on eBay. Aside from RPG's, just the usuals - Virtua Cop 2, Virtua Fighter 2, Fighting Vipers, Dayonta USA, Street Fighter Alpha 2. I LOVED Burning Rangers but i wasn't very good at it, lol XD;; Guardian Heroes was also brilliant, i played that a lot. The first two Panzer Dragoon games were also cool. Saturn Bomberman was a classic. Getting real nostalgic talking about these games now, haha! XD
Purple and green are also Joker colors.. and Joker and NiGHTS are both sorta in the 'mischievous clown' category.. I bet NiGHTS would look pretty boss in a Joker outfit too..
Get an emulator that has the stereoscopic feature. I'm sure it would make NiGHTS better, especially since it's often hard to gauge the distance between objects, or exactly what angle NiGHTS is flying at.
I wondered when we'd see this Who Dat?, and it really couldn't have been better timed indeed. I don't got much else to say here except I can very much relate to the core feeling in this episode- that of a sincere and deeply rooted love for a character- and it's always nice to hear props for the crazy amount of thought and depth that went into the NiGHTS franchise as a whole as well as the character themselves. When even Shiggy is like "true say fam, wish I was ob that Maren tip", you know you've got a real gem on your hands. (also my uncle who works for Sega told me NiGHTS' 100% canon gender is "a luxury assortment of turkish delight", fight me scrub)
I absolutely love NiGHTS! She is such an awesome character so thank you for helping create such a sweet character like NiGHTS. I want to cosplay as her someday. NiGHTS is a friend I have when I dream every night!
Did you know I had a NiGHTS-like dream once? It was long, long ago, back when I was still a kid of 7 or 8, I don't even remember. I can't really recall much of the dream itself as well, but I do remember very few fragments of it. I remember meeting a person clad in purple, I remember helping this someone in this dream (which honestly felt like I spent such a long time inside of), I remember when the dream almost at its end this someone told me that they will be waiting for me at a place whose name I've long since forgotten, and that when I woke up from this dream, I was crying. Till this day, I wonder what that dream was all about and if I'll ever meet that person in my dream ever again. And keep in mind that I had this dream YEARS before I even knew NiGHTS existed. It was mindblowing

I've actually never really known really heard about Nights until now. Yet, the presentation and the overall description you gave of Nights has left me feeling like I have a bond with them too. All in all I have to say, well done DiGi! : )
I like NiGHTS’s gender and gender presentation being flexible, both for the sake of player immersion and for personal reasons. As an agender (genderless) person, I can’t remember seeing an ambiguously-gendered protagonist often, especially not in older games. Androgyny is often culturally associated with evil because of things like the Hay’s Code, and the legacy it’s left in our culture is conflicting for me because of my love of flashy villains but disdain for the vilification of gender non-conformity. I think that NiGHTS hits a nice sweet spot of being a gender-ambiguous protagonist while still having a mischievous and rebellious streak.
The aggravating thing here is that making a nonbinary or other nonconforming identity isn't even where they mess up,it's how most of the time they try to say not being cis is what causes it while rarely giving any positive rep.Worse still is when they use backlash against it as an excuse to start bashing on actual people.The sheer lack of their self awareness is so pathetic
All I can say is thank you DiGi! This episode was phenomenal NiGHTS means so much to me and you did her justice. Also that Dreams Dreams remix you did for this video was awesome and really made the ending feel heartwarming. It's not even Christmas yet but I feel like I've already got what I wanted. :)

I'm happy to stumble upon your video. Funny story, I would have never discovered NiGHTS if it wasn't for my dad. As a child, I wanted to get my little hands on a game called Spyro. One Christmas, in 2009 or so, I asked him "I want that game with the purple dragon!". My dad, being the dad he is, mistakenly bought me NiGHTS for the Wii. I was slightly disappointed and confused, but I love my dad so I took it gratefully and decided to give it a try. Best decision of my life. Even if I never got very far, it helped me get through the harshness of my step siblings bullying me. NiGHTS was there to help me sleep in a cold bed or if I was in tears from the day of embarrassment. I'm currently playing through the game right now as I go through college. It's a sweet reminder of what I really wanted to do back then as a kid and a comfort to myself. I'm finally able to chase my dreams. And to find my NiGHTS again. This video seriously made me cry happy tears. It's crazy because if it wasn't for my dad's silly mistake, I wouldn't have found such an adoring character to be my shadow and friend. It's any wonder I'm still confident in my future. It's time to embrace and heal my inner child. And yes.... Because of NiGHTS... I miss the old Sonic Team too. We all need NiGHTS more than ever now. I have this huge obsession with clowns and ive always wondered where it came from. Last night i saw someone in a comments section talking about it and i was flooded with memories. I was like ohmg i love that game i havent thought about it in forever. And they said yeah that seems to be the popular opinion with people who are now obsessed with clowns. Okay so I am a seamstress, and I like to make plushes. I had a dream a few weeks ago I cant stop thinking about, where i was sitting at my home, on the porch, working on a little doll of none other than NiGHTS, and they had noticed it, approached me, and complimented me on it, saying, and I quote, "You did a really impressive job getting my looks down!" And i dont know why, but that encounter? It only motivated me to do more sewing and stuff, I hope that if I do see NiGHTS again, I could thank them for this encounter, its done a lot for me tbh
I know we briefly chatted about this on my NiGHTS video man, but I'm glad I wasn't alone in not being absolutely sold on the game first time. So glad I gave them that second shot as well. Also if I ever meet NiGHTS in a dream I will fuse with them just to admire that vacuum-packed arse, because DAYUM. Also also mad respect, purple's my favourite colour! Also also also this was one of your best, man. It felt really heartfelt and genuine.
Learn about lucid dreaming, and train yourself to do frequent reality checks. It may seem a bit strange and slow of a process, but being fully lucid and able to do whatever you want with NiGHTS is totally worth it. And by whatever you want, I of course mean flying. What else would I mean?

Encourage people to give the character a second try if they didn't understand them the first time around. Lemme tell you some bs. At random, a NiGHTS JoD playthrough showed up once, and it felt weirdly familiar. I watched it, and after watching it AND I SHIT YOU NOT, I legit had a dream that following night where she showed up, and said "wow, haven't you grown?" THAT SHIT IMPLIES I HAD A DREAM THAT FEATURED HER BEFORE I KNEW THAT JOD WAS A THING. And that's my conclusion because I wasn't born before the 1996 game, and two years before JoD. That and I wouldnt be surprised if I did see her once, forget, have life remind me she exists, and then to never forget about her again. And another thing? Holy shit do I miss the old Sonic Team with a passion.
Dude! Thanks so much for these NiGHTS videos. As a kid I never owned a Saturn but got to rent it from time to time and fell in love with NiGHTS into Dreams for its dream wolds, unique gameplay, music, and yeh, NiGHTS design (used to draw a lot of NiGHTS art and jester like characters as a kid... even got a jester-like winter hat back when those were a thing at ski shops). And yet I only realized now, I NEVER knew the full plot or context to anything beyond "kids have bad dream, NiGHTS helps them sort it out. Avoid the alarm clock." I didn't know NiGHTS was created by Wiseman to be a villain... heck, I didn't know Wiseman existed (I didn't fully understand the gameplay so never got high enough score to get to Twin Seeds, but I still had fun flying around) But after your videos, I booted NiGHTS up last night on Xbox, got a bunch of Bs and Cs from doing extra laps, and yeh... finally beat the game after all these years. So thanks for expanding the lore on a childhood favourite. :)

True story. My computer completely froze emitting a deep distorted noise at 1:03, right when the second picture appeared but before the word "porn". I had to hard reboot it. For a second I thought it was a joke in the video because the timing was absolutely perfect.
Definitely one of the best NiGHTS character analysis videos on the platform. Seriously, that entire segment involving NiGHTS' significance outside the realm of fiction really spoke to me, as I too have longed to meet my favorite characters somehow, especially when I was younger. It's awesome to hear that they actually took this into account when creating NiGHTS, and it's one thing that makes the character all the more special. If I ever get to make an original story through video games, I'd be sure to use a similar philosophy when creating my characters. Maybe one day I'll be able to meet NiGHTS...

This is one of my favorite games. And on the original Saturn version, they didn’t talk yet you could still find yourself fully immersed and connected. I absolutely love this game.

I don't remember all the details, but last night I had a dream involving NiGHTS. I got Journey of Dreams on the Wii for $2 at a game store a few years back, and have been so thankful I did. That was my introduction to NiGHTS... Assuming you don't count the Phineas and Ferb crossover fanfiction with NiGHTS that I read before buying the game as my introduction... The music of Journey of Dreams. I love it. Queen Bella's Ball sticks out to me, but then there's Dreams, Dreams Sweet Snow version in the same game. Hard rock, and what basically sounds like a lullaby. Some might say this musical direction is unfocused, but I can't get enough of it. I also got NiGHTS into Dreams recently, as it was for free from Sonic Team for some reason (I forget all the details, but I wanted to play it) and... I'll be honest, maybe I'm dumb, but I couldn't exactly figure out what I was supposed to do in the first level. I might give it another go later today, but I was frustrated with that. I didn't have a Dreamcast growing up, so I didn't have access to NiGHTS until I was older, but I have loved every moment with them.
Nights and her ingame motions are just so aesteticly pleasing to watch, she is so beautiful and thats why i bought JoD back then. now i still love to go back to the game and replay it for the amazing music and. well. its like flying myself!
Thank you so much for making this video, I played NiGHTS around 97, and alongside Tomb Raider, introduced me to gaming aged 7/8. However I was always alone with my love for NiGHTS as no-one else had a Sega Saturn and my mum actually picked it up in a woolworths discount bin for me! Honestly, it's just so nice to see some quality content for the series. This video will also help me with my NiGHTS cosplay, so thank you for that too!
So, I'm in an Living Learning Program type thing in my university, and as a sort of final project for the program, I'm leading a class about storytelling in video games that'll meet for two hours every week for a whole semester. As of Journey of Dreams. I feel like people play up NiGHTS's selfishness a fair bit. I think that people describing NiGHTS as morally grey, rather than a genuinely good person, is more of an artefact from before NiGHTS was actually given a dialogued role. From what I gather, NiGHTS cares genuinely about others, including nightopians; who she doesn't personally know- she doesn't only care about her friends. NiGHTS also shows concern for Reala when he gets hurt. If Reala is just another enemy in NiGHTS's eyes, then showing concern for his injury shows strong moral character, but I don't really know what NiGHTS thinks of him. It's entirely possible NiGHTS has lingering feelings of friendship towards Reala from back when NiGHTS was serving Wizeman. Why NiGHTS left Wizeman remains unknown. NiGHTS might have been chasing her own happiness or might have actually felt bad for dreamers and nightopians. It remains unclear what dualisation actually does. It seems possible that it simply allows the dreamer and NiGHTS to use combined strength. It's quite possible that dualisation serves NiGHTS more NiGHTS lets on. I believe that NiGHTS and Reala are the only ones that specifically have the ability to dualise, and it's reasonable to suggest that the ability specifically benefits first level nightmarens; serving as a form of posession and/or gaining some sort of resource from dreamers. There is definitely some question of what NiGHTS is actually asking you for.
Been following NiGHTS since 2010 (even before then when I got the NiGHTS edition of Nintendo Power and saw a JoD ad on a box of Archies we got a a garage sale). Always listened to your Dreamcasts with TRiPPY and bought both JoD and into Dreams HD when they came out. Downloaded the Lucid Dreaming album when THAT came out to. Did my best with whatever came about in that "Draw a Maren" contest. Great to see you bringing this into your UA-cam channel and grounding new followers in your roots.

Can I just say that your choice of music is VERY immaculate in this episode, especially the NiGHTS theme remix at the end, that was so soothing! Nights has been a decent part of my childhood too. Ever since I played NiGHTS Journey into Dreams on the Wii, I was HOOKED. I've been an avid fan ever since that day! I just wish the fandom was a bit bigger, nights is such a hidden gem, it's saddening really.
+Lionel10102006 - Yeah, the main core NiGHTS fanbase has always been small, no matter which era it was. Before Journey of Dreams it was even smaller, the fandom literally had to get by with nothing but NiGHTS cameos in Sonic games, lol. It was a tough time. But i'm thankful for the way things have panned out now. It's the best possible time to be a fan of NiGHTS, i think :)

Also, I've been bothered by this ever since I discovered NiGHTS. I'm PRETTY SURE, 100% SURE I have seen NiGHTS in my dreams WAAAAAY before I discovered the series. All I remember now is a flash of purple, but seeing NiGHTS, it makes me think that I may have been paid a visit at least once in my life.

It was one of the first fan-communities that I actually clicked with and, while I wasn't an active participant, I enjoyed making fan art and such. You and your girlfriend actually, I looked up to you at the time! I was pretty young! I dug all the art and music you guys made. Your videos showed up in my recommendations and I recognized you instantly! Glad to see you still chugging along, man! NiGHTS was actually the reason I changed my persona's hair from red to purple. I often compare NiGHTS to Captain Falcon: two well-known characters from different companies, starved out of their own games and reduced to 3rd party or crossover games both from the start or DLC.

I know. Balan Wonderworld is the closest we'll ever have to that NiGHTS nostalgia ever again, being made by former members of the OG Sonic Team and all.
I can see why. The gameplay is very different from what most people know. It's not something that not a lot of people would like, let alone love. Probably that's why Nights is only a cult classic.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy playing it. But I can only play it for a few minutes until I get tired of it. I usually play it in short bursts
@@teneesh3376 Nights has always been one of those games that can't really be freshened up without making drastic changes to it. Sadly a lot of franchises that get that treatment end up being a massive failure because they remove the core of the game that made it fun in the first place and replace it with gimmicks.
The Wii sequel I thought was fun to play but it did nothing new and had no replay value at all. Also the story in parts was a bit of a let down in hindsight. The Saturn game with no ingame cutscenes, voice acting etc required a little imagination from the player to fill the gaps. In Journey of Dreams the characters of Helen and Will are a bit cardboard and I find Reala cringy rather than sinister which is how I used to picture him.
There is an exhaustive list of suggestions of how to reimagine this franchise but honestly I doubt we will see anything else of it.

What's so interesting about all this is, I actually saw Nights in one of my dreams when I was a little kid, and they introduced themselves to me. I had no recollection of ever having heard of them before our meeting, but when I woke up I had the sudden urge to look up the character. When I found out there was a game about them, I flipped out! Nights has been close to my heart ever since.
One of SEGA's fallen heroes. If they were ever to make a 3rd NiGHTS game, I wish they wouldn't rush it like they did with its sequel, not saying that it's bad, I loved the game. The 3rd game has to be good enough in order for NiGHTS to make a comeback. But hey, a person can dream right?

I think I cried tears of joy when I heard they were making a sequel. I'd had literal dreams for a decade where they made a sequel and I loved it, only to wake up, realize there was no sequel, and start sobbing. I'm not even joking -- I wanted it THAT much.

The first time I ever saw NiGHTS was in Sonic Riders. Something about the character visual appearance made her my favorite Sega character I'd ever seen right there and then. I went and played all of the NiGHTS games I could at the time and even stumbled upon your fansite. Hearing you analyze NiGHTS in this video helped me understand what I like about her character design so much a lot more than I used to. This is top-notch stuff, man.
haha, I can relate to immediately liking a character just from appearance in a seperate game. i fell in love with Silver the Hedgehog after playing as him in Mario and sonic at the Olympic winter games.

I think Nights' jester hat might also be emblematic of her nightmaren side. As they sit they kind of look like greater demon ram horns. Let's not also forget that she has sharp cat-like pupils much like a demon would. To wrap up this aspect with a nice little bow, take into consideration the color that is used to represent evil in a lot of Japanese media. Typically if they are trying to show a character has an aura of evil about them they will use a shade of purple. There might be even more subtleties to her design that I'm not seeing too, but that's just something I've noticed.

I always viewed NiGHTS as female! Also, this was one of the games that made me fall in love with the (old) Sega and Sonic Team. NiGHTS into Dreams for the Sega Saturn literally blew my 7~8 year old mind.

As of right now, my favorites are mostly the RPGs and action-adventure titles that were available on it. Magic Knight Rayearth, Albert Odyssey, Panzer Dragoon Saga, The Legend of Oasis, Shining the Holy Ark... I could be here all day gushing about them all!
+Rabbit Plays Games - Ah yeah, there were a LOT of RPG's on the Saturn. Especially in Japan, they had like ..three parts to Shining Force 3. Lol, we only got Part 1 here in the UK and the other two parts in the series were never translated! XD;;
We were lucky enough to get Panzer Dragoon Saga though, which was brilliant. Sadly i never finished that, i borrowed it off a friend and had to return it to him so i never got to see the game right the way through. It's a pretty rare game to find now, it's apparently quite expensive to buy on eBay.
Aside from RPG's, just the usuals - Virtua Cop 2, Virtua Fighter 2, Fighting Vipers, Dayonta USA, Street Fighter Alpha 2. I LOVED Burning Rangers but i wasn't very good at it, lol XD;; Guardian Heroes was also brilliant, i played that a lot.
The first two Panzer Dragoon games were also cool. Saturn Bomberman was a classic.
Getting real nostalgic talking about these games now, haha! XD

I wondered when we'd see this Who Dat?, and it really couldn't have been better timed indeed. I don't got much else to say here except I can very much relate to the core feeling in this episode- that of a sincere and deeply rooted love for a character- and it's always nice to hear props for the crazy amount of thought and depth that went into the NiGHTS franchise as a whole as well as the character themselves. When even Shiggy is like "true say fam, wish I was ob that Maren tip", you know you've got a real gem on your hands.
(also my uncle who works for Sega told me NiGHTS' 100% canon gender is "a luxury assortment of turkish delight", fight me scrub)

Did you know I had a NiGHTS-like dream once?
It was long, long ago, back when I was still a kid of 7 or 8, I don't even remember. I can't really recall much of the dream itself as well, but I do remember very few fragments of it. I remember meeting a person clad in purple, I remember helping this someone in this dream (which honestly felt like I spent such a long time inside of), I remember when the dream almost at its end this someone told me that they will be waiting for me at a place whose name I've long since forgotten, and that when I woke up from this dream, I was crying.
Till this day, I wonder what that dream was all about and if I'll ever meet that person in my dream ever again.
And keep in mind that I had this dream YEARS before I even knew NiGHTS existed. It was mindblowing

I've actually never really known really heard about Nights until now. Yet, the presentation and the overall description you gave of Nights has left me feeling like I have a bond with them too. All in all I have to say, well done DiGi! : )
I like NiGHTS’s gender and gender presentation being flexible, both for the sake of player immersion and for personal reasons. As an agender (genderless) person, I can’t remember seeing an ambiguously-gendered protagonist often, especially not in older games.
Androgyny is often culturally associated with evil because of things like the Hay’s Code, and the legacy it’s left in our culture is conflicting for me because of my love of flashy villains but disdain for the vilification of gender non-conformity.
I think that NiGHTS hits a nice sweet spot of being a gender-ambiguous protagonist while still having a mischievous and rebellious streak.
The aggravating thing here is that making a nonbinary or other nonconforming identity isn't even where they mess up,it's how most of the time they try to say not being cis is what causes it while rarely giving any positive rep.Worse still is when they use backlash against it as an excuse to start bashing on actual people.The sheer lack of their self awareness is so pathetic

Funny story, I would have never discovered NiGHTS if it wasn't for my dad. As a child, I wanted to get my little hands on a game called Spyro. One Christmas, in 2009 or so, I asked him "I want that game with the purple dragon!". My dad, being the dad he is, mistakenly bought me NiGHTS for the Wii. I was slightly disappointed and confused, but I love my dad so I took it gratefully and decided to give it a try. Best decision of my life. Even if I never got very far, it helped me get through the harshness of my step siblings bullying me. NiGHTS was there to help me sleep in a cold bed or if I was in tears from the day of embarrassment. I'm currently playing through the game right now as I go through college. It's a sweet reminder of what I really wanted to do back then as a kid and a comfort to myself. I'm finally able to chase my dreams. And to find my NiGHTS again. This video seriously made me cry happy tears. It's crazy because if it wasn't for my dad's silly mistake, I wouldn't have found such an adoring character to be my shadow and friend. It's any wonder I'm still confident in my future. It's time to embrace and heal my inner child.
And yes.... Because of NiGHTS... I miss the old Sonic Team too. We all need NiGHTS more than ever now.

Learn about lucid dreaming, and train yourself to do frequent reality checks. It may seem a bit strange and slow of a process, but being fully lucid and able to do whatever you want with NiGHTS is totally worth it. And by whatever you want, I of course mean flying. What else would I mean?

Lemme tell you some bs. At random, a NiGHTS JoD playthrough showed up once, and it felt weirdly familiar. I watched it, and after watching it AND I SHIT YOU NOT, I legit had a dream that following night where she showed up, and said "wow, haven't you grown?" THAT SHIT IMPLIES I HAD A DREAM THAT FEATURED HER BEFORE I KNEW THAT JOD WAS A THING. And that's my conclusion because I wasn't born before the 1996 game, and two years before JoD. That and I wouldnt be surprised if I did see her once, forget, have life remind me she exists, and then to never forget about her again. And another thing? Holy shit do I miss the old Sonic Team with a passion.
Dude! Thanks so much for these NiGHTS videos. As a kid I never owned a Saturn but got to rent it from time to time and fell in love with NiGHTS into Dreams for its dream wolds, unique gameplay, music, and yeh, NiGHTS design (used to draw a lot of NiGHTS art and jester like characters as a kid... even got a jester-like winter hat back when those were a thing at ski shops).
And yet I only realized now, I NEVER knew the full plot or context to anything beyond "kids have bad dream, NiGHTS helps them sort it out. Avoid the alarm clock." I didn't know NiGHTS was created by Wiseman to be a villain... heck, I didn't know Wiseman existed (I didn't fully understand the gameplay so never got high enough score to get to Twin Seeds, but I still had fun flying around)
But after your videos, I booted NiGHTS up last night on Xbox, got a bunch of Bs and Cs from doing extra laps, and yeh... finally beat the game after all these years. So thanks for expanding the lore on a childhood favourite. :)

Definitely one of the best NiGHTS character analysis videos on the platform. Seriously, that entire segment involving NiGHTS' significance outside the realm of fiction really spoke to me, as I too have longed to meet my favorite characters somehow, especially when I was younger. It's awesome to hear that they actually took this into account when creating NiGHTS, and it's one thing that makes the character all the more special. If I ever get to make an original story through video games, I'd be sure to use a similar philosophy when creating my characters.

I don't remember all the details, but last night I had a dream involving NiGHTS. I got Journey of Dreams on the Wii for $2 at a game store a few years back, and have been so thankful I did. That was my introduction to NiGHTS...
Assuming you don't count the Phineas and Ferb crossover fanfiction with NiGHTS that I read before buying the game as my introduction...
The music of Journey of Dreams. I love it. Queen Bella's Ball sticks out to me, but then there's Dreams, Dreams Sweet Snow version in the same game. Hard rock, and what basically sounds like a lullaby. Some might say this musical direction is unfocused, but I can't get enough of it. I also got NiGHTS into Dreams recently, as it was for free from Sonic Team for some reason (I forget all the details, but I wanted to play it) and... I'll be honest, maybe I'm dumb, but I couldn't exactly figure out what I was supposed to do in the first level. I might give it another go later today, but I was frustrated with that. I didn't have a Dreamcast growing up, so I didn't have access to NiGHTS until I was older, but I have loved every moment with them.
I remember I actually dreamt of NiGHTS in one of my dreams when I was younger.

Thank you so much for making this video, I played NiGHTS around 97, and alongside Tomb Raider, introduced me to gaming aged 7/8. However I was always alone with my love for NiGHTS as no-one else had a Sega Saturn and my mum actually picked it up in a woolworths discount bin for me! Honestly, it's just so nice to see some quality content for the series. This video will also help me with my NiGHTS cosplay, so thank you for that too!

I'm replying to this late but I've personally seen NiGHTS as female since the Saturn release (and Reala as male). Not alone. :-) It's cool that the eventual voice acting agreed with my childhood imagination.

As of Journey of Dreams. I feel like people play up NiGHTS's selfishness a fair bit.
I think that people describing NiGHTS as morally grey, rather than a genuinely good person, is more of an artefact from before NiGHTS was actually given a dialogued role.
From what I gather, NiGHTS cares genuinely about others, including nightopians; who she doesn't personally know- she doesn't only care about her friends.
NiGHTS also shows concern for Reala when he gets hurt. If Reala is just another enemy in NiGHTS's eyes, then showing concern for his injury shows strong moral character, but I don't really know what NiGHTS thinks of him. It's entirely possible NiGHTS has lingering feelings of friendship towards Reala from back when NiGHTS was serving Wizeman.
Why NiGHTS left Wizeman remains unknown. NiGHTS might have been chasing her own happiness or might have actually felt bad for dreamers and nightopians.
It remains unclear what dualisation actually does. It seems possible that it simply allows the dreamer and NiGHTS to use combined strength.
It's quite possible that dualisation serves NiGHTS more NiGHTS lets on. I believe that NiGHTS and Reala are the only ones that specifically have the ability to dualise, and it's reasonable to suggest that the ability specifically benefits first level nightmarens; serving as a form of posession and/or gaining some sort of resource from dreamers. There is definitely some question of what NiGHTS is actually asking you for.

Been following NiGHTS since 2010 (even before then when I got the NiGHTS edition of Nintendo Power and saw a JoD ad on a box of Archies we got a a garage sale). Always listened to your Dreamcasts with TRiPPY and bought both JoD and into Dreams HD when they came out. Downloaded the Lucid Dreaming album when THAT came out to. Did my best with whatever came about in that "Draw a Maren" contest. Great to see you bringing this into your UA-cam channel and grounding new followers in your roots.

Can I just say that your choice of music is VERY immaculate in this episode, especially the NiGHTS theme remix at the end, that was so soothing! Nights has been a decent part of my childhood too. Ever since I played NiGHTS Journey into Dreams on the Wii, I was HOOKED. I've been an avid fan ever since that day! I just wish the fandom was a bit bigger, nights is such a hidden gem, it's saddening really.
+Lionel10102006 - Yeah, the main core NiGHTS fanbase has always been small, no matter which era it was. Before Journey of Dreams it was even smaller, the fandom literally had to get by with nothing but NiGHTS cameos in Sonic games, lol. It was a tough time. But i'm thankful for the way things have panned out now. It's the best possible time to be a fan of NiGHTS, i think :)

Also, I've been bothered by this ever since I discovered NiGHTS. I'm PRETTY SURE, 100% SURE I have seen NiGHTS in my dreams WAAAAAY before I discovered the series. All I remember now is a flash of purple, but seeing NiGHTS, it makes me think that I may have been paid a visit at least once in my life.

Ah! I used to visit those old NiGHTS forums and such! It was one of the first fan-communities that I actually clicked with and, while I wasn't an active participant, I enjoyed making fan art and such. You and your girlfriend actually, I looked up to you at the time! I was pretty young! I dug all the art and music you guys made. Your videos showed up in my recommendations and I recognized you instantly! Glad to see you still chugging along, man!
NiGHTS was actually the reason I changed my persona's hair from red to purple. It quickly became one of my favorite colors too. Thanks for making this series, it's great!
