Can I fly this heli using just only my Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick? Do I need advanced joystick like the Thrustmaster Warthog? I have this Mod since Mar 28, 2015 but was not able to master it. Do I need to bind some key to my keyboard so I can fly this helicopter much easier?
Your landing section may have just unlocked the key I've been missing. Some of this seemed absolutely magical to me, but it's something I'm surely going to be practicing in the near-future!
this video is not a tutorial, this is a platinium helicopter course ! Thank you so much for this , now i have to train hours and watch this video again and again.
this has made me realize that takeoff and landing both have 2 stages: hover - transitioning to - translational and translational - transitioning to - hover. i see many people especially treating landing as one action, and struggling mightily as a result !
This a really great tutorial. Probably the best I've seen so far on this subject. You've managed to present it easy to understand way. It helped me a lot, thank you. And the visual presentation is top notch. It's a pity that you've stopped uploading new videos. Sounds like you had a lot more planned. I hope everything is ok and you're doing fine.
There is always some translational lift going on at a hover (wind, drift in hover point)... ETL is where that translational flow results in the aircraft completely outrunning recirculation of airflow through the rotor system and thus gains significant efficiency. Not unusual to be barely able to hover/become light on skids with full gas and load... a running takeoff gets enough translation through the rotor system to have some excess thrust to allow a climb.
Pretty sure this video just solved every issue I've ever had with flying, more so landing, a helicopter in DCS. I'm not sure if you have names for that method of landing, but I'm calling it VSI stepping and strip alignment, and it is spectacular. Thanks for this!
This tutorial should be part of the module when people are buying the UH-1H! Thanks a lot Sir! I've got this one in my pack. A must have. AWESOME! Greetings from France ^_^
As others have mentioned, this is the most concise and clear explanation of these basics. I hope the maker is OK, as he hasn't posted anything in a while. I would love to see more content. There aren't many channels that I know of that specialize in helicopters in DCS.
I've spent the last 2 years crashing helicopters in DCS when the free to play rolled around. Where was THIS video when I needed it! lol. Great lesson and a MUST watch for anyone new to Helicopters. I had been putting off buying the Huey because I just could never land the thing! Now I know why and will have to give it another shot.
Thanks for the vid, really really help me understand what I was doing wrong when landing and they have greatly improved from what I gained from your video.
Just bought they huey and without a doubt you have the best tutorials I‘ve ever seen for dcs (wasn‘t satisfied with grim reapers because it‘s just so sloppy and just reading the theory without seeing practice was just to much for me (read chucks guide) your videos came to me at the exact moment I needed them. Bless you sir I hope you keep up the content (I subbed and turned on notification :) )
I can' t stress enough how awesome and helpful this video is! Thanks so much for making this! It' s exactly what I was looking for in all the other videos I watched before that didn' t really feel helpful at all in the end.
I understand how an airplane works well enough to be a good dcs pilot, as I kid I always wanted to be an aeronautical engineer or pilot, but helicopter physics and aerodynamics are beyond me! Very informative video!
Thank you so much for this great video. Many videos on cold start, but not many on take off and landing. You explain these so well, I now have a understanding of flying Helicopter principles.
Loved your tutorial. It has been really useful. It's actually more skill demanding to operate the right way than going hard pushing the aircraft limits. Thank you for your nice video.
Great video, I especially appreciate the analogy with VTOL aircraft. Flying the AV8B for a while has really helped me manage this transition in the Huey. You keep it nice and simple.
Great video, thanks. You have just translated (pun intended) what’s happening aerodynamically into a language I understand and then shown me how to respond as the helicopter transitions from flight to hover. Off to practice what I’ve learned 😀
I think it's possible you're conflating the term Translational with Transitional. Your explanation of translational lift seems correct but I want to add that the term Translation refers to something moving in space from place A to place B. Translation and Rotation are the two kinds of motion we deal with in dynamic physics. Otherwise a great video.
Relaxing video! Didn't really expect me to comment that on a dcs guide lol. Helicopter pilot's in DCS guides always land so smooth and take off so smooth and slow & steady but in war you have to be fast, could you make a tutorial how to do really fast take off and landings? Oh wait, you just said it while I was writing this.. oh well!
Great videos. Thank you. I hope you're soon back to complete the series with "Combat", as adviced. I was not sure to buy the Huey, but now you solved my doubts.
Hi there, this is fantastic! Are you still there? I would love to see more videos about flying the Huey. I'm using it as a training helicopter with the intention of moving on to the Gazelle and, hopefully, the KA-50 at some point. Your tutorial videos have been very helpful. Thank you :)
Excellent tutorial , (im quite good with a Huey but there's always room to learn more )- great presentation and your teaching voice is very calming - I've forwarded your vid to my cuz whose a total Helo newb
THANK YOU ! Exactly what I need to train: some great tips in this video ! too bad there are no additional tutorials! maybe you have another YT channel?
Great tutorial that will help me understand the most difficult part of flying a helicopter, thank you! (Please tone down the music, I'm hard of hearing and cannot understand 50% of your explanation. I have to use subtitles to be able to grasp it) Keep doing these tutorials, it helps a lot!
Transitional Lift is called Translational Lift?... 02:04 I think the term translation doesnt come from its transition into straight flight but from translating the downward thrust lift into wing lift. Nicely organized quite helpful tutorial..thanks
Your video helped me to understand what happened earlier to my huey today. I picked up some marines in a hot lz and transported em to fob. I did a smooth approach and then wanted to make a perfect stop over my helipad. Causing me to be caught in the vortex. I responded horribly wrong with increasing collective. Well u can guess what happened. Since now i can avoid it. Thanks for the good explanation ;)
Its called ground effect, you are either in it or not. You can be in ground effect, but there is no in-ground effect. Helicopters don't go in-ground. Ground effect is, in simple terms, compressed air between the rotor blades and the ground creating a cushion of air that basically increases to efficiency of the flight surfaces of the heli
Question: When I turn on my controls indicator and I pull back on the joystick the nose goes up but the indicator in upper left also goes up. As your indicator goes down down as your nose goes up. My joystick is set so pull back and nose raises and push forward and nose drops

4 years on and this is still gold, cheers mate!

Best DCS Huey tutorial for landing and take off on UA-cam.
Thanks a million!
Agreed this is the best video I have found. This guy needs to make more tutorials!

Yoooo why does this perfect vid not have much views :( thanks for this vid btw!!
too realistic :-)
This comment aged well

Nice work on the video! Just started out on the Huey and took a lot of information (Take off & Landing) from this video! Thanks!
Loved your tutorial. It has been really useful. It's actually more skill demanding to operate the right way than going hard pushing the aircraft limits. Thank you for your nice video.
And here I was thinking with helicopters you could just go straight up and down as you please :) thank you very much for this video!
These videos are presented like proper flight training videos. Very good and thank you.
Found my way to choppers finally (still hoping for WhateverCobra module), awesome tutorials, thanks.
Nice series of videos. I'd gladly contribute for more helo videos, especially focused on landing on platforms and precision maneuvers .
Now I understand and can land the Huey !!!!!!! It takes 2 steps, flight en hover. !!!!! thank you !!!!!!!
As a complete noob to flying helicopters I found this tutorial bloody excellent! Thanks very much and great job! Subbed :)
Very nice presentation! Best training video for the Huey I've come across. Just bought it NYD, and it's been a fun challenge that's for sure!
Stunning, WHAT a brilliant tutorial. Thanks a lot!!

This is insane! It's almost like watching a professional tutorial / license class. Thank you so much. Liked & subscribed.
Great video. I almost felt like I should be paying to watch this!
Excellent tutorial, vastly helpful. Thank you. Looking forward to future works.
Truly excellent tutorial videos and some of the best presentations I've ever seen. Please keep it going.
Real good and will try this later as I have been struggling with my landings
Very good explanation ,even better than My instructor when I learnt to fly.
Just picked up the huey as my first helicopter and I'm having an absolute blast learning it! Thanks for the video.
Wow!... Well done ,what a great Tutorial 😀 . ..interesting stuff 😳😀

You had the makings of a 100k channel if you had kept going. Hope you and your family are well.
Brilliant way to teach.
Love it! Thank you very much for this video!
Thanks a lot for this tutorial, you explained it very clearfully :).
Ok! No human can fly this good, this is not possible! :)
Just kidding, your skills are epic!

Very good tutorial.
Question: When I turn on my controls indicator and I pull back on the joystick the nose goes up but the indicator in upper left also goes up. As your indicator goes down down as your nose goes up.
My joystick is set so pull back and nose raises and push forward and nose drops
Very informative video!
Awesome video. Would love to see how to properly land in a HOT LZ. You know like in "We Were Soldiers"?
Landing a heli is surprisingly more like a plane than I thought... btw I fly this heli with an xbox controller... so yeah fun.
