DCS World: Translational Lift, Take Off, And Landing Tutorial
0:19 Translational Lift
4:24 Basic Takeoff
12:54 Basic Landing
This video is a tutorial of Effective Translational Lift (EFT), basic take-offs, and basic landings.
Understanding and mastering the entrance and exit of translational lift is most important during take-offs and landings.
If you can master this, take offs and landings will be a breeze with helicopters in DCS World.

There is always some translational lift going on at a hover (wind, drift in hover point)... ETL is where that translational flow results in the aircraft completely outrunning recirculation of airflow through the rotor system and thus gains significant efficiency. Not unusual to be barely able to hover/become light on skids with full gas and load... a running takeoff gets enough translation through the rotor system to have some excess thrust to allow a climb.

In this game, do you fly from the right seat or left? I'm confused because they have a passenger animated with hands and feet on the controls, yet there is no animation for the PIC. Kinda weird.

Pretty sure this video just solved every issue I've ever had with flying, more so landing, a helicopter in DCS. I'm not sure if you have names for that method of landing, but I'm calling it VSI stepping and strip alignment, and it is spectacular. Thanks for this!

Your landing section may have just unlocked the key I've been missing. Some of this seemed absolutely magical to me, but it's something I'm surely going to be practicing in the near-future!

Its called ground effect, you are either in it or not. You can be in ground effect, but there is no in-ground effect. Helicopters don't go in-ground. Ground effect is, in simple terms, compressed air between the rotor blades and the ground creating a cushion of air that basically increases to efficiency of the flight surfaces of the heli

As others have mentioned, this is the most concise and clear explanation of these basics. I hope the maker is OK, as he hasn't posted anything in a while. I would love to see more content. There aren't many channels that I know of that specialize in helicopters in DCS.

Thanks my friend ...I'm new to DCS & have been struggling with the Huey ...I've yet to constantly achieve the elusive hoover ...it is a hit & miss. After watching how smooth YOU are ...I'm wondering if I have my settings wrong. I have good equipment (Virpil collective & throttle & a X-56 HOTAS & pedals) I use no assists ...do you? Do you have a video covering the basic setup for the Huey? ...I subscribed.

Of course translational lift is not called that because you transition to it, then it would be called transitional lift. It is called that because you have translational movement, which is the correct term for forward movement or movement where the center of gravity changes location as opposed to rotation. Otherwise great lesson!

Back in 1989I learned to co-pilot a Huey in-flight incase the pilot was or co-pilot was taken out. I never learned to take off or land, but was pretty sure that would be easier than learning how to emergency jumping into the seat of a wounded pilot. With only 20 hours of flight time - I did what I was taught to do very well. Your video was so helpful for me and my memory of my Huey. Thank you so much.

I had an old Saitek 290 that I removed the self centering spring on. It made a HUGE difference for emulating a cyclic. I plan to add a rubber stick shift cover that I’ll trim to fit in place of the spring to protect it from dust and add a bit of stiffness. . I’m going to lube the ball and socket first though with a plastic safe lubricant. It’s an experiment and an in home adventure.
