    I bought my 2009 Solstice GXP coupe 5 years ago as I fell in love with the looks. As Franz alludes, the "60s era" of sports cars, it reminds me of a high end sports GT of that time.

      Yes. Cobra 427, E type, the first Mercedes SLs, the BMW 507. Those jumpy curvy elegant two seaters are my dream, and he nailed it. I love my solstice

      In a less radical way...the solstice reminds me of my Austin-Healey, that I owned 50 years ago!...the Healey was also more of a 'sports GT, rather than a feisty sports car like those old Triumphs and MGs were, back in the day.

    I miss Pontiac. Some of them were great cars. GTO, Trans Am, even some of the Grand Prix and Bonneville were lovely to drive and easy to own.

    Great insights from Franz on the Solstice development. I think the Solstice is still one of the best looking modern roadster in modern times. As Don said, the form is just pure and graceful without the overdone body panels. Sky was nice, but now getting a bit dated due to the overuse of plastic chrome bits.
    To those who complained about dropping the top, may I present you the Boxster Speedster. It takes quite a bit of finagling to work that little tent. Yet no one complained. Hmm....
    If I have a Solstice or Sky, I'd just leave the top down all the time.

      You hit the nail on the head when talking about the looks of the Solstice and the Sky. One of the reasons I chose my Solstice over the Sky my belief that the simpler form of the Solstice will prove to be timeless. The other reason is that the car was conceived as a Pontiac. But I'd probably be just as happy with the Sky!

      I agree I like keeping my top down to much of a hassle having to deal with the trunk opening especially in Michigan where it is very humid & the top tends to stick & very hard to open & close properly plus I happen to think it looks alot better with the top down.

      I agree I have a 2006 Solstice & I still get alot of compliments on it just wish the top was easier to put up & down! I actually resorted to using a queen size fitted sheet that covers from the windshield to the seats & a whole lot easier to take off & on! Lol

    Thank you, it was fascinating listening to the Franz von Holzhausen interview. I particularly like him talking about his design inspiration for the Solstice, and staying on the project from drawing the concept to it going into production. The Solstice is definitely a pure design and that's probably why it continues to turn heads almost 20 years later. On the downside, we'll never know how the Solstice could have evolved due to the mismanagement of the brand by GMs CEO Rick Wagoner & his Board of Directors. BTW, just wanted to mention that GM did offer a tune for the 2.0 turbo that added approximately 30HP to the GXP 260HP. So 290HP, and was covered under its warranty.

    Great piece. The interview was really enlightening. It’s interesting for Franz to mention Jaguars, as they produced cars that always resonated with me. I’m a Solstice owner and I think there among some of the most timeless, beautiful cars produced since the turn of the century.

    Donald, considering your question about the 3 cupholders in a two-seater. It was Vicki Vlachakis, Franz's colleague at GM, who designed the interior of the Solstice. Her role is amply documented in Gary Witzenburg's "The Pontiac Solstice Book". Since Franz seems not to recall the matter of the cupholders, perhaps Vicki would. I think she is still in the design field. Cheers, Kent

    I worked in the Delaware solstice and saturn sky assembly plant that made these cars as a facility Manager and helped organize the first MECCA party. The people who owned these cars drove all over the country to particpate in this. I remember they had an issue that they could not fix on the convertable tops and it was the creases on either side. I saw a few hard tops with the removable roof panels, I thought that was a sweet look but the only problem was their was no room in the car for the roof panels so they made canvas inserts in case it rained and your panels were out, all in all it was a great desighn

    This interview with Franz von Holzhousen put a smile on my face and helped remind me what I love about my 2007 Solstice GXP. Having read "The Solstice Book" I knew that Franz was inspired by the romantic open two-seaters of the 1960's and I love that he singled out the Jaguar E-Type as one of the leading images he had in mind. He must have thought also of the D-Type with its curvaceous fin blending rearward from the drivers seatback. " And why not two of those? - Perfect!" he must have thought. He goes on to explain that the "blisters/aerofoils" dictated a new design for a folding top and that an attempt to revise them into a more conventional trunk shape caused the whole design to fall apart. In this case the form is well worth the peculiar function of the trunk lid. It was also a joy to see how down to earth and congenial he is in sharing his insights and thought processes. I believe that the Solstice, like the E-Type, is one of the most enduring and satisfying sports car shapes to emerge in the last 50 years or so. He should be proud, as indeed he is, of this particular accomplishment. Thank you, Franz and Donald for perceptive and delightful interview!

      Mallet’s were very well done V8 swaps. Every so often one comes up for sale. Usually a Solstice which I don’t like as much as the Sky. However, they are performance bargains that fetch far less than they should.

    I greatly enjoy the Donald Osborne - Jay Leno You Tube videos which generally feature high end cars. I subscribe to Linkage magazine and Sports Car Market, which also feature high end garage art. Just the same, it would be fun to watch Mr. Osborne critique less expensive cars as he did with the Solstice. Some of us prefer to keep our investments in a brokerage account instead of our garage. There are a lot of truly great cars that don't cost a fortune. More videos like this would be fun to watch. The Audrain Museum is certainly doing a lot of innovative things. Keep it up.

    Oh how fun Donald! My first and last ride in one just happened to be in your neighborhood. When I came out to Newport, Rhode Island in 2007 to represent the William K. Vanderbilt Jr. Concours d'Elegance, John Rodman of the Preservation Society of Newport County (PSNC) drove me around in his brand new Solstice. I loved everything about the car and never understood why they discontinued the line. John reports he still has the car there in Newport and it's doing just fine, and still giving him great driving pleasure 15 years later.

    I bought an '06 base Solstice a few years ago. I've added turbo and have a blast racing it at the auto slalom track. With a hitch, a motorcylce trailer, and a trunk rack it's no problem hitting the road and touring with it. Can't wait for the thaw here in the Great White North (Manitoba), it's time to cruise!

    General Motors should seriously contemplate bringing Frank on board as the head designer for Corvette. His innovative vision, coupled with his understanding of the supercar class, positions him uniquely to give Corvette an edge. In his capable hands, Corvette could truly transcend the current supercar paradigm and set a new standard of design excellence. This move has the potential to not just evolve but revolutionize the Corvette, cementing its place as a leader, not a follower, in the world of supercars. It's a consideration that GM would do well to entertain.

      Surprising since Donald does shows with Jay Leno. Jay will lift the hood and talk about the engine, show you the dash board, the trunk, how the top works ( if it's a convertible ) and put the car on a lift so you can see the underside. I can see Jay saying, " ya know Don, you should show the audience more details of the car, that's what they want to see." IMO.

    Still a great looking design today! A very different GM, a GM that actually took risks with design and offered a massive product portfolio in market segments other than vanilla mid-size crossover SUVs built this car. Solstice/Sky, SSR, the Hummer portfolio, CTS, reintroduction of Camaro, G8 were all examples of the final days of “Old GM”. Now we get 20 versions of the Equinox and the corvette.

    My dad retired in 94, but if he hadn't, he probably would have machined some of the dies for the body of this car. -Unless, by then, die-making had already changed considerably....In my family's days, dies were machined differently than later on. In fact, I don't think in my dads time, hydroforming with a one-sided die was even a thing, in body dies. My dad, and grandfather, were both career-long die makers for GM. Fisher Body / Plant 18/19/Fiero in Pontiac. Between them, they machined many of the body dies for GM's most famed vehicles, from 1949, to 1994.

    I think it's fair to say that we Solstice owners are hungry for any tidbit of information about our cars. Especially about how the car came to be. I bought mine in 2019 and loving it. I have owned two Fiat X1/9s, each which I bought new in 1978 and 1985. I'm going to take issue with your reference to the Solstice as a "sporty car" and not a sports car. The Nissan 200SX was a sporty car. A Honda Prelude was a sporty car. The Solstice is a sports car like the Fiat X1/9 and other open top, two seat, ,rear wheel drive, manual transmission. Perhaps the automatic transmission option brings it into the sporty car classification, but even then I'm not certain about that.
    I look at a sports car more in the classical sense. Not necessarily powerful, but rewarding to fling about. Low to the ground, not much extra space other than the seating for two. Difficult to go to the supermarket with. Convertible top.
    If the Mazda Miata is a sports car, then so is the Solstice. Looking back to 2007, they performed about the same, and cost about the same, I'm not sure why you had to pin this unfortunate label of sporty car, on the Solstice.

    I anxiously awaited the introduction of this car. I had a 1993 Mazda Miata and thought the Solstace or Sky would be a great upgrade. To my shock, the Solstace has a fatal flaw IMHO. If you want the top down you need to clear the trunk. Why on earth would you have to keep the top up if you wanted to travel with luggage? Grand Touring? I bought a 2005 MX-5 instead.

    • @halnwheels
      @halnwheels Рік тому

      The top could have been done better, for sure. The Solstice top is a bi-fold design and the Miata (like most) is a tri-fold. A tri-fold design will fit is a smaller space. That being said, I have a trunk rack for my Solstice that attaches with hi-grade suction cups. It really helps when travelling.

    From 0:01 until 8:43, I was amazed at the sound quality of Donald's voice. While in a moving convertible, his voice was crystal clear... with not even a hint of wind noise. Then came the interview at 8:44 ... What a disaster both the sound and video quality were from then on. You should have just done the interview from inside the car, Donald.

    It was so disappointing to see Pontiac go away as they began to do better, bring out better vehicles such as the Solstice and GTO mentioned and the G8 which was another Holden. Also Saturn as it began selling cars sold in Europe which the media was asking GM for years to sell here including the Sky as mentioned here. The cars Saturn startex selling were actual import beaters which is what the brand was created to do. Instead they kept boring Buick per the USG which does really well in Asia, but terrible in NA.

    A friend had one, the four cylinder. I have a ND MX-5/Miata so did some comparisons. I can put the top up and down in seconds and it doesn't take up any space in the trunk. Not so with the Solstice. And even the ND1 is faster than the Solstice four cylinder. Neat looking car though.

    • @austinfrazier7325
      @austinfrazier7325 10 місяців тому +1

      You’re comparing a 10 year old design to the ND. NC1 is it’s competitor. Yeah the trunk thing sucks but it’s all about the design esthetic plus they had almost no time. The Miata had been an absolute institution for 16 years at that point.

    I think the Solstice is Franz' best looking car, and the Roadster 2.0 is the worst. The other Teslas are all in the middle (S, X, 3, Y) and all look like dolphins!
    (Btw, I had a Model 3 and now have an X, so I'm not an adversary to the brand!)
