  • watch this video for Simple golf swing tips for beginners. In this video, I'm coaching Steve who's only been playing a short time. You will see him gain over 20 yards in distance with his 7 iron and hit the green much more frequently.
Steve found me here on UA-cam and lives only five minutes away so it was great to coach him in my Royal Leamington Spa Academy.
As you've heard me say before if you are a current subscriber, the golf swing can often be over-complicated and it shouldn't be. In iron play there are some common mistakes that golfers make. These mistakes work against you and lead to frustration. Not all golfers know how to find their relaxed, natural golf swing, that's why it's my passion to make golf simple.
Steve came to me for his second session. He's only be playing for three months and he was looking for a swing that he could repeat. In this video, you'll see that I work with Steve on alleviating common mistakes. During the session I address his club face position, how to stay at ease during the set up, his wrist movements and what his finish should look like.
If you are not as close as five minutes away we can also work remotely which you can find out more from the links below.

I've been working on the same two things to get a better angle of attack and stop hard hooks to the left. It takes time but it will improve both the direction and distance.

Hi Julian you may remember me commenting on various videos you have made in the past but I really think that the content of this video and instruction is the way forward in Mho for proper golfing , particularly for me who struggles to finish my swing due to keeping my head down to long .I,ve watched hundreds of various videos but this one brought home to me why my bad shots are going left as my club is closed at impact. Thanks for sharing .

Make sure you do it whilst playing now, Stephen 👍

Brilliant. I like the idea of finding your own natural swing. Being natural surely improves consistency as it easier to reproduce. And I find slowing everything down improves my striking of the ball. And without losing much distance,if any. Thanks.

Julian, I have been using your method for quite a while now, today I had a terrific practice until I went from driver to wedge, I immediately started to shank. I have lived with this for years. I do have an inside take away issue. Can you help me with this transition? Tom in Ocala FL.

      Hi Tom,
Everything is fixable that’s for sure. Not sure there’s a worse feeling than shanking. I’d be happy to work with you and help you get back on track 👍

What percentage of new golfers show up with such a flat swing path? (My wife recently has). Amazing diagnosis, regardless. Who would guess that turning away from the ball earlier (at least the shoulders) would lead to better contact and better club-face control?? Still kinda skeptical that such a cure will work for this guy who constantly has to fight being too steep, though less tension would certainly be nice. :-) It shall be tested here shortly. :-)

@@JulianMellor Thank you! Going to bore you with all the details. :-) We first tried the change with my wife, as she also had that "restricted" look. She immediately began hitting "toe shanks". We knew that because of this cool, light green colored mat insert that shows your "divots" on our GoSports mat on the lanai. *And*, the divots were coming very much from the "inside". After pondering it a bit, we wondered what would happen if the ball position were moved "up" in her stance, as a continuation of that "early, inside divot" might then have a chance of reaching the ball. It did, and she began striping them consistently. Coincidentally, when I'd been to able flatten my own downswing recently, I got that exact same pattern of divot shape and toe shanks or even whiffs, and gave up on the swing change. Seeing her success, I gave it a go, myself. Moved the ball well up in my stance and allowed myself to open my shoulders much earlier. Same striping results. :-) Thank you for setting us on a different path. Hope I *never* move even a short iron back near the middle of my stance, again. At least half a dozen manipulating swing thoughts suddenly rendered unnecessary. This is a lot more fun. :-)

thank you Julian I absolutely enjoyed the coaching lesson, this was my second and I'm looking forward to the next, I am practicing more and more now, the coaching has encouraged me to want to play more, yes I still hit duff shots but I am more relaxed in my swing and feel I'm getting better and my confidence has increased as well, Steve.
