With FixItPhillip, You can fix it!
First time I saw someone installed a clutch without dropping the trasmisión to the ground.. Wow!!!!! Good job..
Awesome video! Done without removing the exhaust, and without dropping the trans! That's how everyone really wants to do it!
I hate exhausts! There's no way i could do exhausts for a living. I don't know how the guys at Meinaki do it. I guess a cutting torch must be their best friend
Outstanding video. I have decades of experience, but none on this transmission. This video covered all the little details, that would have slowed me down a lot, to find them on my own.
Thank you sir
New subscriber here! This is the type of shit I LOVE to see!!! By making this video, you've proven that you did everything right and the customer can't say "you just put my old flywheel back on" or something like that. and it shows it's not an impossible task, even though it feels like it to people like me.
Thank you!
Real good Job trying to show people that it's not that difficult to deal with transmissions on a Toyota Tacoma 2010.. Thanks
Taking this job on for my 09 Taco as soon as the parts come in, this video is extremely helpful thanks for all the detail.
Your welcome brotha. Please be sure to like and Subscribe please. Im happy this video helps!
FixitPhillip was Awesome, I did this job almost purely by this video!
My only request Phillip is that you add a diagram of the bell housing bolt pattern, I missed the two on the very top and it cost me some HOURS. But when i got those off, it was just as described. Step by Step. I really appreciate you uploading this video!!!!!
I bought a new clutch, Throw out bearing, pressure plate for about $500 from Rock Auto and another $100 at a military "auto craft shop" where you can rent a lift bay and tools.
The local dealership said this would have been a $2,000 job at their shop. So saved about $1,400 doing it myself!
Thanks Again!!
How the hell do you get those top two bolts out
@NickLi_ let the trans hang down at a angle a little to give you a little more room to work. and I used a 1/2 ratchet with long extensions and a swivel right before the socket.
"Okay, flywheel all torqued down". Now, that was really informative! DH !
I got 300,000k on my TRD . Original clutch thats just starting to slip under load. After watching this video in not so freaked out about the job. Good video Sir!
I have 240k on mine and i think it is slipping. I have been pulling a trailer recently and then my check engine light came on and my traction control light. What did it feel/sound/smell like. When I'm accelerating the engine races if I press harder without the truck accelerating like it should. It's like it is not transferring the power to the transmission.
Mine felt ike it was doing a burnout under a load. No smell. Just watched the rpm climb and not going any faster. The clutch and flywheel where replaced . I could have resurfaced the flywheel but a replacement was cheap. Clutch was almost down to the rivets
Man, amazing work. Your client should've just had you do that rear main seal while you were there, but not your vehicle. Otherwise damn impressive how you left the trans up. Time is money.
very informative, thank you. going to replace my 2011 tacoma clutch set soon. my first 4 x 4. not too much different than a 2x
I got a 2009, how did your replacement go?
@@Meraj_1983 well it went fairly well. a couple of things that became a pain. removing all the electrical clips, they are all different. google how to remove them, it will save some time. the 2 top bolts holding the transmission housing are very difficult to remove and reinstall. also the hydraulic line and electrical harness clamp bolts. one requires long skinny arms. i made a ramp for the front wheels and put the rear on jack stands for access. also i used ratchet clamps to hold the transmission to my floor jack and almost managed to find the center of gravity. putting it back in needed a little more effort to compensate for it being off balance. i started with putting in 2 of the lower transmission bolts then jacked it up to install the uppers. lots of swearing and wondering why i was doing it myself. then i remembered saving $3000.00 was the reason. i'd do it again because i'm an old and stubborn frugal kraut. good luck.
Best of the best! I have 2009 supercharged.... will do clutch soon.
I work in a&s garage thanks for the video this help me a lot god bless you bruh
God bless you too!
Thank you!! Awesome walk through.
26 mins for you ....weekend for me lol
In the middle of dropping mine and I need a pry bar to pull the bell house away from the engine. The only concern I have is it's on ramps not a lift and also putting those top bolts in are gonna suck I had a decent 4 to 5 feet in extentions to get those out lol
Good informative video. Now we see why labor is expensive as it is 😁
Great video man🍻
Great video! I realize it would have been hard to video, but how did you get those two top 17mm bolts? They are hard to see, let alone feel!
When you take off the trans crossmember, lower the Trans down at an engle and it'll be easier to get to those top trans bolts, please be sure to subscribe! Much appreciated
FixItPhillip do you use an extension to get those top transmission bolts? You have a recommendation for the proper tool to use? Thanks!
Yes a long extention, socket, and ratchet
Subscribed. Good video, answered any questions I may have had. Since I'm considering taller tires/lift, did this play a part in the clutch wearing out? Mines slipping a bit, has been for several months but babying it is still daily drivable. Plan on doing this soon!
Going to have to do this on my 2018. Stealership says the throwout bearing going bad isn't covered by the powertrain warranty, so would cost at least $1500 out of pocket just to replace the bearing. I call BS. Probably going to do one of those bearing sleeve kits too, this has been an issue for a very long time and Toyota hasn't fixed the design flaw. The throwout bearing is steel riding on aluminum (or other way around) so they start squealing and wearing faster.
You recommend doing the rear main seal at the same time? My truck has 190k on the original one, seems like a no brainer to just replace it.
Yes i think thats a good idea based on the miles since your already in there, thanks for the question, be sure to Subscribe, much appreciated
Hi, did you replace the rear main seal? if so, would you please tell me where you bought it? thanks.
Thanks so much great video subscribed. Can you tell me when you switch from the single transmission support to the big transmission jack if that makes sense. I would imagine you took the first support away after the second one was in place?
Thank you! Yes I removed the first jack stand on the trans once the other was in place
Bro you almost make it look easy. The job is rated for 6 hours but how long did it actually take? Great work.
4 to 6 is about right
@@FixItPhillip thank you
So it'll take me 10-12 hah
6 h laying on my back and my driveway doing it maybe but not with all the tools he has
@@coolhluke8089 Haha I helped a buddy of mine do a clutch on his 04 jeep laying on the ground under it and it took no less than 8 to 10 hours 😂 Sadly that's exactly how I'll be doing my tacoma's clutch in the coming weeks as well
Great job brother 🙏👍
Wow what an awesome job!! How much do you charge for your work? I have 2012 tacoma that needs a new clutch and fly wheel soon and are you from the Minnesota & Wisconsin area?
So I kept waiting for you to change the pilot bearing. Just curious, why didn’t you? Or you just didn’t film it?
There is no pilot bearing on this year/model, to my knowledge the 5 speed trans is the style with a pilot bearing, 6 speed no pilot bearing
@@FixItPhillip thank you
I was looking for the part With the bell housing two top bolts and the long extensions.. Did I miss it or you used another method to get the two top bolts?
Good looking Taco! Thanks for the video. Very helpful. I own a 2007 DBL Cab TRD OR. Sub'd!!
Thank you bro im happy the video helped. Thank you for Subscribing and the comment! gotta make more taco videos. So far just the clutch job video and this one i think. Take care brotha!
*the clutch job video and the front wheel bearing video so far
So what's the deal with the slave? Nobody seems to talk about it.
My husband has a 2014 reg bed 4 cylinder 2wheel drive tacoma. 119k miles on it. the throughout bearing has become very noisy, but, the pressure plate and disc seem to still be working great. there is a lot of pressure on the pressure plate. my question is, with a loud throughout bearing, does this mean the pressure plate and disc are probably going to go soon?
If your going to take that all apart I would do a clutch kit and flywheel while you're in there. At least look at it good.
great video
on the clutch release fork, opposite side of the pivot ball side supposed to be pushed into that hole of the trans?
I forgot how much simpler replacing clutches in longitudinal engines are. All I do in my shop are transverse. Why can't they all be like this
I have a 2015 Toyota Tacoma TRD 4x4. How much is the cost for repair and the time for the work? Do you have to get inside the vehicle or can that be avoided? I am now hearing the throw out bearing making the noise.
How about the pilot bearing? Does that not need to be replaced? And wouldn’t you need to bleed the slave to account for the thickness of the new clutch?
This Tacoma Trans design doesnt use a pilot bearing,
And no you dont bleed the slave cylinder for a new/thick clutch. Typically you only need to bleed it if you replaced a master or slave cylinder or got air in system somehow.
FixItPhillip awesome! Thank you
@@josuelopez2095 your welcome, please be sure to Subscribe! Take care
There is an issue with the throw out bearing chirping with aftermarket clutches and pressure plate, the throw out bearing makes contact with the pressure plate
how do you line up the clutch disc? there is no pilot bearing and the alignment tool is smaller than the hole in the crankshaft....
Good job sir
doubt you will respond, is the 4.0 the same or similar to the 2.7 drivetrain? need to replace the clutch on the 05 might do it myself not sure don’t wanna spend 1k in labor tho
Very similar I believe. I would say its the same or lesser labor time wise
Is the throwout bearing supposed to spin all the time?
What are the signs that you need this done ?
Do you have a recommendation for a best clutch for this truck?
Hey do I have to replace the flywheel? My clutch kit didn’t come with one
Hi. I have one question, were is seating a input shaft bearing, in the flywheel or in the crankshaft?
No pilot bearing on this model
How much is the labor job was or any idea on the price?
Hey there, thanks for the video! What kind of seat covers are shown? I've been looking for a while, but haven't found good ones (2008 tacoma).
Over here on hawaii everyone has the Wet Okole seat covers which over here is like the best of the best.
Plz be sure to Subscribe, much appreciated!
@@FixItPhillip absolutely, done and done!
Great video, wondering if this job is doable without a lift? What are your thoughts?
It definitely is, ive done it. I would just get 4 big jack stands and prop up the whole truck level. Thank you for Subscribing brotha!
@@FixItPhillip Sweet. Gonna do this to my 05 4wd AccessCab. Then to an 04 ExtraCab.
Do it brotha! Im happy the video helped you out.
Does anyone know ho to remove the bell housing from a manual Tacoma Xrunner? Do you have to open up the transmission to remove the bell housing?
I just had all this replaced and now the truck just sounds so loud. Is that normal because of the new parts?
What do you use to align the clutch disc with the pilot. The plastic tool with the kit has a lot of play in the pilot bearing end and I’ve been trying all day to align my trans.
I just use the tool it comes with. It wouldn't hurt to visually look straight into the hole with your eye to see how centered it is
FixItPhillip My uncles used long bolts to help align the trans and pull the bell housing together. Thank God, at the perfect time my help came!
Hey man. Sorry for commenting a year later lol, you Gained a sub! Anyway, did you have to remove the lines from the slave cylinder and remove it? Video kind of skips over that little bit , thanks!
I left the hydraulic line connected on this one so I didn't have to bleed it. Just removed the slave bolts and the brackets holding the hard line and pushed it aside
@@FixItPhillip thanks man, gotta put some more videos up! By far the clearest and most detailed video if this job.
Thank you bro
Was it not possible to take down the transmission? it made workspace for more cramped than needed to be.
If you want to take off the exhaust you can absolutely
Let me ask you where did you get that clutch kit from
I believe it was a Aisin clutch kit from napa
What electric impact are you using? That thing seems powerful!
Its a milwaukee fuel brushless impact. Works great
I got the set on Amazon
Have you had any issues on this generation tacoma and throw out bearing chirping? my throw out bearing is starting to sound more like a grinding or the bearing are grinding. it's crazy annoying and ita bad enough I'd like to do a clutch kit. what are your thoughts? thanks!
Yes I've heard thowout bearings chirp on these, usually comes in a clutch kit
Toyota replaced my throw out bearing on my 09 after it started chipping even before the warranty was up
French toast 🤣🤣
Lol
Is it the same thing for an 09 Tacoma 4 cylinder?
Similar
Do you need to put spline grease on the input shaft?
You can put a little to help it slide back in. Just not allot so it doesn't fling onto clutch disk
@@FixItPhillip forsure, would wheel bearing grease do the same?
Ya just a little week be ok
@@FixItPhillip also another question, what was the torque specs on the flywheel? Been lookin into it and seen 61lbs but doesn’t seem like a lot imo
Whats your year, Make and model. Ill look it up.
I notice no torque specs was used on the flywheel and clutch assembly
I did just a hard spot to record, yes make sure the flywheel bolts to crank and pressure plate bolts are torqued to specs. Thank you for the comment!
@@FixItPhillip awesome video keep up the good work. From the 808 State.
about how long did it take and cost? the dealership is telling us it is a two- tree day process and will cost us $1,500....my husband has a 2008 Toyota tacoma
I'm an independent shop in socal and our price is about 2k (parts+ labor and a recommended trans oil change) to do this job. 1500 seems more than reasonable.
the reason I recommend an trans oil change when doing this job is because when the clutch gets to the end of its life, a lot more heat is generated do to friction when slipping and less material to disperse heat.
Just my 2cents. good luck
There's no pilot bearing?
Nope
Well done
What clutch and flywheel brand did you go with
Aisin i believe
@@FixItPhillip thanks
Question: I have a 2007 2.7l 4cyl 5spd Manuel transmission coming up on 230,000miles. I have yet to replace my clutch or notice any slips or defects. The only thing is that I let my pedal out moderately far for it to catch, but again, nothing else noticed. Do you think I should replace it ASAP? Maybe I’m causing damage somewhere unknowingly?
Thanks for your time and the video! Will definitely be using it at some point!
If you notice slip on acceleration or uphill you need to replace the clutch, if it's solid with no slippage in high gear at WOT you're good to go. Believe me you'll notice!
I just replaced my master and slave cylinder to solve that proble feels like new. No New clutch nessassary.
Show the torque values ?
How much is the kit
what manufacturer of flywheel did you use?
Aisin i beleive
helpful video, think there is enough room to leave the crossmember in and just wiggle back a bit?
Has anyone had trouble with their clutch making a chirping noise and actually fixed the problem? I have a 2006 Tacoma 4.0L with 107K miles and my clutch is still chirping even after having a new clutch installed recently. Some people online say its the throw out (release) bearing making noise but I'm not sure at this point.
Yes could very well be the throw out bearing
@@FixItPhillip After the clutch job I had the same shop replace the bearing with an Aisin brand which I bought from Toyota and the truck still makes noise. Then I replaced the clutch release cylinder using the exact part called for in the Toyota service bulletin (T-SB-0365-10) but to no avail. I've read that this issue could lead to bigger problems so I'd like to fix it somehow. Do you have any suggestions? Do you think the shop might have done a poor job and that I should get a full clutch job again some place else?
@@FixItPhillip Hi, in this case, where would you recommend getting the throw out bearing from? what brand? does the new kit come with it?
The original toyota one would be best which I believe is aisin
@@FixItPhillip so obviously new clutch kit doesn't come w it right?
What is the torque spec for the the flywheel
also looking for torque specs
You’ll have to watch this video along with whatever els happens to be available because surprisingly didn’t cover a damn thing on the slave cylinder. Just the bolts holding it…nothing about that 10mm and bracket for the line going to the slave.
No need to disconnect the line going to the slave cylinder, you can just unbolt it and let it hang off to the side, so you don't have to bleed it later
Nice! It’ll be fun tryna do it with no shop lift.
Anyone else cringe when you saw the frame chopped for the dog shit lift?
Diy video: *uses a lift
I have the 2WD version of this transmission. The driveshaft flanges don’t have any visible bolts? I pulled the engine and am attempting to reinstall the engine but I left the trans in the truck and it’s hard getting the input and bellhousing holes to line up.
Tacoma flywheel bolts are TYY 22ft pnds +90 degrees is TTY DO NOT REUSE!. Recommend replacing unless you have no option. $5 each from Toyota! X10 of them.
If only it took 27 mins 😂
I just had a new clutch installed on my 2009 tacoma. It is now very difficult to put in reverse and first gear..The shop says that it is "perfect"..It did not do this before the clutch install.Any ideas?
Learn how to drive a stick.my corolla has 188k on OEM clutch.GREAT video tho
THEY WANT $1,300 TO DO THAT?
IT TOOK YOU 25 MINUTES????
It's easier & more straight forward to do a clutch on a 600lb roadranger equipped log truck than this..Not looking forward to doing it
Whatever is running almost makes this unbearable to watch and listen to
