This movie became so popular right away when it came out at the premiere in 1998 that it literally saved Marvel from Bankruptcy & not only helped them to pay their bills but also gave them enough money to start to produce those pre-Marvel films in early 2000 before Avengers characters became a franchise thing as we know it now

Fun story from the DVD commentary: The guy playing Quinn fell and dislocated his jaw while they were filming the scene in the hospital, so they had to take him to the ER. Yeah, Wesley Snipes didn't do all of his own stunts, but he did a lot of them and he had a really good double. While this movie is a little dated, and very much a film of it's time, it's exceptionally well cast, the performances are great and the story is really good. The script waffles between terrible to pretty good but the story itself is rock solid. Unlike many movies of this era(and limited budget), Blade holds up really well based on it's strengths which far surpass it's shortcomings.

Blade was a 10 to me, saw it in the theaters loved every second of it. The marketing was awesome for our little M rated brains back then. We were watching Attitude Era WWF and Monday Night Wars WCW Nitro, and the commercial and trailers for this just fit in perfectly with our hyperviolent raving edge lord gangsta selves. That Confusion song was perfect to tell us what we were getting into.
As for familiarity, as a comic fan Blade came out during the Blaxploitation era and the 70s Vampire film craze, so the character was perfect for his era, but that was before my time. I and many, became familiar with the character because of his guest role in Spider-Man the Animated Series during the Morbius arc. If I recall correctly he was using a lightsaber there and was a lot...angrier.
Knowing his work from Demolition Man and Passenger 57, I was SUPER excited for Snipes to get the role and his stoic, snarky, super lethal interpretation basically became the gold standard. He revolutionized Blade the same way RDJ revolutionized Tony Stark ten years later. Marvel's record of Perfect casting starts with Blade.

Udo Kier who played the head of the vampire council actually played Dracula in Andy Warhol's Dracula in 1974. The lady vampire who lured the guy into the vampire club was Traci Lords, a former porn actress. Judson Scott of Wrath of Khan fame was one of the members of the council.
This is a movie that actually improves on the character it was based on. Marvel changed the character in the comics to more closely resemble Snipes portrayal. I can't wait for your wife to see the next one. It's a Guillermo del Toro masterpiece.

My only guess as to why the Pure Bloods "put up" with Frost is probably because the one who turned him was not only Pure Blood, but also a member of that council who had a leading position. That position now belongs to Frost for whatever reason.

    • @Bensonders
      @Bensonders Рік тому +9

I would guess that there are multiple reasons, depending where the writers came from.
In the comics Frost was way more powerful and important with a very unique origin for a turnblood, this wasn't really included in the movie, but may still be the lore?(he wasn't turned by a vampire, he accidentally turned himself)
And on the other hand: the vampire houses act more like a united nations, so they don't really just kill each other off, just because their beliefs differ.
Additionally purebloods outlive turnbloods naturally (marvel vampires aren't immortal, just age super slow and truebloods age way slower than turnbloods)
So the truebloods saw Frost just like another eager kiddo who wants to be "that guy" and as their politics are all about "just stay passive and survive", they might've just planned to sit Frosts antics out until he dies or gets killed by blade.
If they knew that he was really on to something with the blood god, maybe they would've acted.

Interesting thing about this movie is how progressive in the right way it is, black leads, strong female character, didn't use graphic sex scenes/nudity to entice viewers(N'Bushe Wright is beautiful), didn't make all the male characters moronic to make the female look better and EVERYONE thought Snipes was badass regardless of his skin color. To Jen's point about Wesley's stunts, I think he DID do his own stunts, especially the fighting, because he actually has studied a few martial arts and has that experience, so I would guess most of it should be him.

So true. Wesley Snipes is the one and only blade. Just like Arnold Schwarzenegger is the only one terminator. Henry Cavill is the man of Steel. Ben Affleck is Batman. No one else can play those roles adequately. These men stepped into those roles and fulfilled them 100 per cent.

  • @newspooiechannel

I saw this in theaters on the Sunday the movie opened in theaters. By that point, most reviews hadn't yet come out for the film, though it seemed most major critics lumped it in with all the previous superhero films of the last few years and told their viewers if was superhero fantasy nonsense. though both Siskel and Ebert really enjoyed the film and they heavily pushed that in their "2 Thumbs Up" promoting the film from that point forward. A lot of industry analysts were surprised that the movie managed to do well for itself while in theaters. The same analysts who assumed X-Men wouldn't do well and Spider-Man (which went on to have the highest opening weekend ever at the time) would only do "okay" at the box office.
Growing up in the 90s, I was a fan of Marvel comics, but really wasn't aware of Blade at all until his character was written into the second season of the Spider-Man animated series that FoxKids was airing. Truth be told, most comic fans weren't really familiar with him either, as he was mainly a D-list character most known for his recurring appearances in Tomb of Dracula from the mid 70s. And although he was completely unknown to the general populace, there was some decent buzz amongst the comic community leading up to the film that Marvel may have finally made a decent movie. (their previous efforts were Howard the Duck, Punisher, the Direct-to-video Captain America and the unreleased Fantastic Four produced by Roger Corman). It was a strange time, when so many comic movies were being produced and performing horribly at the theaters (Batman & Robin, The Crow 2, Steel, Barb Wire, The Phantom, Mystery Men, etc...). A time when if you told someone that Marvel would release amazing films and DC would be slouching behind, everyone would laugh and think you were crazy.
When the idea of producing a Blade movie materialized, Marvel had years prior been purchased by Ron Perelam and was now going through bankruptcy proceedings with a hostile takeover attempt from Carl Icahn. They had no desire to get into film and only saw Spider-Man as a viable property, which they wanted James Cameron to direct, though it was tangled up with rights issues. Outside of Avi Arad, the head toy sculptor at the company Toy Biz (which had an exclusive contract with Marvel), all management at the company felt that pursuing any movie or television deals would be a waste of their time and resources. So when they were approached by New Line Cinema to buy the rights to option the film, Marvel sold them away for around $40,000, thinking that it was a character no one had ever heard of that would never actually be made into a film and it would be free petty cash in their pocket for doing little work.
What actually happened was that Blade, X-Men and Spider-Man would go on to become the trinity of films that would be released over 4 years that would redefine the superhero film genre for all subsequent releases to come and the continued success of each lead to Marvel getting their name out into the public and selling off a number of properties, which ultimately helped their new management (led by Ron Perlmutter [owner of ToyBiz] and the aforementioned Avi Arad) stabilize the company and ultimately bring us the MCU a few years down the line.
BTW... the original "Blood God" stuff at the end of the movie had Frost during into a literal blood god at the end... a giant whirlpool of blood that Blade had to fight. Early effects for the fight were in the process of being rendered when a cut of that version was shown to test audiences. In it, the vials of the exploding toxin get mixed into the whirlpool, which de-powers Frost and then Blade stabs him through the heart. The audiences reacted very favorable to the film up until that point, in which they said the giant blood whirlpool that Blade "fights" completely took them out of the experience and it gave them a very negative score for the end of the film. So they had to come up with a new ending, which is what we got with Frost and the super abilities, sword fighting and then exploding. The line about skating uphill was, if I remember correctly, something Snipes said randomly on set one day and David Goyer (the writer) liked so much that he put it in the final sequence.
I'm not sure if the blood god "whirlpool" stuff is on the Blu-Ray, but if you have the original DVD release of the film, you can see the early footage of it as a bonus feature. If you search out the alternate ending on UA-cam, you can find it there as well.

Yeah, one year before the Matrix there was Blade. Funnily enough Blade "invented" the bullet time in a single clumy scene, too.
I love the Blade movies, 2 even a little bit more than the first, but they are both awesome! And I don't think that the new Blade movie will add anything to those. Snipes with his martial arts background (which is completely lacking in modern marvel) and strong presence can't be copied.
Additionally as you already noted in the first few minutes: this movie didn't shy away from graphic stuff. Thats why the movie was banned in germany until 2019, you could only get a heavily cut/censored version that was completely butchered here.
This movie contains so much of what Marvel doesn't do anymore, even if you watch the first Ironman movie now you wonder what happended to modern marvel.

It’s not actually a blue filter. Its the silver halide grains within the make up of the film stocks emulsion.
If you shoot using unfiltered tungsten stock in day light, the colour temperature of the film shifts towards blue; if you used lighting it’d appear normal.
Also, when processing the film, they used a technique known as Bleach Bypass or Silver Retention. This is a chemical effect which entails either the partial or complete skipping of the bleaching function during the processing of a color film. By doing this, the silver is retained in the emulsion along with the color dyes. The result is a black-and-white image over a color image. The images usually have reduced saturation and exposure latitude, along with increased contrast and graininess. It usually is used to maximum effect in conjunction with a one-stop underexposure.
More recently films can achieve the same effect with post production colour grading. But in the case of Blade, with it being film on 35mm, it was achieved through a photo chemical process.
