If you're in an area that doesn't have mulch to worry about then you can't go in both directions. However, tilting it as you do will direct the clippings up or down, depending on the rotation of the head.
An additional advantage, of your correct method, when you are cutting up to a vertical surface, wall/fence/etc, the cut material is not thrown onto the surface of where you have just cut. Right to left (for a counterclockwise head) leaves a much tidier edge that doesn't need as much, if any, later raking or blowing. But, left to right along that fence, you are throwing most of the cut material on top of your already cut areas.
Haha, I was thinking how this was bull and clickbait and then right there this was a real and very nice tip. I haven't had the inconvenience of .. mulch?, but this certainly will change how I trim from now on. The small things makes the difference. Thanks for the tip. 😊
Straight shafts spin counter clockwise and curved shafts spin clockwise. You can cut in any direction or angle you want to depending on where you want to direct the clippings, the direction you are facing or walking in respect to where you're trimming and so on. However in this case with the straight shaft he's using, sweeping from right to left is most effective.

Thanks 👍
Well, i'll go to bed more SMART tonight, thanks to this guy !
That Hart Tools trimmer is actually very good.
If you're in an area that doesn't have mulch to worry about then you can't go in both directions. However, tilting it as you do will direct the clippings up or down, depending on the rotation of the head.
I've been doing it wrong the whole time. I'm an idiot! Thank you for this tip!
Give up on life and don't have children.
Well DANG.....who knew? Thank you! I love ALL my Hart equipment!
I never knew Ben Afleck was so good with string trimmers 😂
An additional advantage, of your correct method, when you are cutting up to a vertical surface, wall/fence/etc, the cut material is not thrown onto the surface of where you have just cut.
Right to left (for a counterclockwise head) leaves a much tidier edge that doesn't need as much, if any, later raking or blowing.
But, left to right along that fence, you are throwing most of the cut material on top of your already cut areas.
Good tip, one that most would never know, but complain why their mulch bed is full of grass clippings.
Good grief, another common sense thing I didn't know about! Thank you.
Awesome tip!
Still waiting on that 18g nailer 🤣
An actual decent tip that can be used every day! Thank you
@Andrew Werndli how do ?? Explain
I can't count how often I have used one of these, and I never even thought about what direction it spins.
After 10 years landscaping and cutting grass. I am the divinci of string trimmers
You just got a sub, like, and a comment all because this was a short and knolagable video 👊😏
And he didn't ask for a sub 🙄
Hey someone else that knows what I know
Did we just become best friends?
Brain matter is splattered. SERIOUSLY never consciously noticed which way the debris was slinging. All I think about is getting the job finished. But this way, you lessen your work/labor. THANK YOU.
Besides just being mind blown 🤯 I love hart tools
“This is a spoon and you’re using it wrong.”
🤔 My head always rotates / spins correctly according to my wife.
In addition, my wife also doesn't have mulch.
Always lived in Australia. We call them whipper snippers. 42 now, been using one since I was 10ish. Just learnt this now. Ta mate!
Thank you Ben Affleck! I always knew we could count on you for yard working tips.
The trimmer only spins on way!? Wow. Totally mind blowing.
This needs a “The More You Know” moment in it
Thanks for letting the world know how smart you are
Awesome Blossom 👏🏼
Good advice.
I think the help does this correctly but I'll ask my head of staff to have a word with them. Much appreciated.
