Great video. Going out this weekend on same boat. Been wanting to try out my 6'8" Thrasher 200-300g slow pitch rod I recently completed building. My Slow pitch baptism

Have you tried and compared using squid or some other bait presentation on your assist hook to see how well they perform with some live baits scent/presentation?

I think the biggest issue is the depth limit enforced in California. Here in Australia SPJ is very productive at 400m. I've seen a guy caught a gemfish using wrench as a jig.

That must be a workout bringing fish up from 1000 + feet deep but yea it must be good fishing, sucks our limit is 600 feet here in California eh

@@jettyeddie_m9130 The depth is not a factor to be honest. Here in California, the rock fishes are adult size at round 400-600 feet, good fishing really. Unfortunately the main factors are gasoline prices and charter boat expenses. Most of the Rockfish boats are halfday ($70) to full day trip ( $220 Mexico waters), but politics are the main culprits, boat captains will rarely get you to 600ft because they lose profits if they use more gas to go further, also with limited time to travel on Halfday trips. So ppl are stuck either getting skunk or shallow baby rockfish. Fullday trips aren't worth it if you don't have a shot at Yellowtails/Amber jacks depending on season. Unless you have a private boat, I dare say nobody will be fishing at 600ft of water for rock fish.

Awesome video, thanks for sharing! I was wondering what you have wrapped around the Temple Reef rod, right above the reel?

it was for rod protection (tenkara line holder). As you can see I lay the rod blank on the rail when reeling it in.

Great video! it would be helpful if you named the fish you catch, there are so many types of rockfish in california it makes them hard to differentiate

I like how you swap out your jigs. I might have to start doing that instead of carrying so many rods or cut and retie. What brand split ring pliers do you use?

    Hi Jim,
I've been watching all your videos. I've been wanting to get into the SPJ phenom, but am having trouble finding the gear. Where are you obtaining yours? I'm looking to match up a rod for my Daiwa HD 300 Lexa. Any suggestions?
What charter have you been using out of SB?
Thanks, keep up the great videos.

Hi. Richard. I use temple reef innovative, and I got mine from Charkbait.com. I would recommend temple reef, Xester emotion or Shimano game type slow J if you can find any of those online. I’ve been going out from Stardust out of Santa Barbara. Good luck! This is a very fun way of catching the familiar rockfish.

      @@JimFanFishing Hi Jim,
Thanks for the reply. I bought my rod! Ocean’s
Legacy Origin Long Fall! Phenix’s Titan Long Fall looks good too. Maybe I’ll see you on the Stardust or Coral Sea one day. Tight Lines!

Hey, it wasn't too bad of a trip. Thank you for sharing your trip, tips, photos and video images of Johnny. I watched plenty of his videos, but I had no idea what he looked like 😂😂😂

Cool video. Do you ever go out of the Huntington Beach or Long Beach area?

    • @JimFanFishing
      @JimFanFishing  Рік тому

rarely. Rockfishing is just much better in Santa Barbara, although it's a bit far from me now.
