I took a class about comedy in college, and one of the most interesting things we learned were the reasons people laugh. It's not just because something is funny. Sometimes laughter is a release of tension or a subconscious expression of our innate desire to fit in. I think a lot of the laughter Bo evokes with his comedy are the tension relieving laughs from blatantly and unapologetically calling out harsh truths and subverting expectations. He's a clever one, that Bo.
Thank you for pointing this out, because it really resonates with my experience. I am what you'd call a "nervous laugher" and I cannot control it. The more inappropriate the situation, the more I laugh. Highly troublesome trying to help an old lady get up after falling while loling uncontrollably. The first time I watched Inside I laughed at everything, because I didn't know how to integrate what was happening and I felt stressed. The subsequent 16 viewings I did not laugh, just cried. Laughter is not always ignorant and malicious, for me it's a stress response.
I would be embarrassed to say how many times I've watched Bo's "Can't handle this - Kanye Rant" video. The only thing better is watching someone experience it for the first time. I love how you guys set him up for success by explaining things that no one gets the first time around. Solid.
I can say without shame that I’ve watched THIS PARTICULAR SONG 100s to 1000s of times. Pretty much whenever I see people talking about it I say it’s my favorite BB song and point out that it’s basically the performance of an anxiety attack. All that being said, don’t be embarrassed! This song is amazing

Bo didnt perform live for 5 years but he did produce comedy shows for other comedians and made a movie called 8th grade. And ive heard that now he will make music for sesame street!!
He was also one of the leads in a movie that got nominated for tons of Oscars (Promising Young Woman) and he's pretty good in it. I would definitely recommend it if interested. 👍

In an interview with him, Bo actually mentioned that pringles and burrito analogy weren’t made by him. It’s just what people saw. He simply made a joke about a relatable thing. Which leads to a debate about what’s more important, what author put in his art, or what we got out of it.
It also opened up an interesting conversation about whether artists sometimes "unconsciously" put meaning into their work without even realizing it. I.e., maybe the fact that Bo was thinking about these deeper struggles caused him to reference Pringles and burritos in a similar way.
I was profoundly shocked when I saw this interview you're referring to, just because the Chipotle metaphor seems to apply so extremely perfectly to Bo's situation anno this special
Yeah I definitely thought people were reaching with the implied metaphors. That would kind of defeat the overall significance of the song's structure, where the first part is meant to actually just be random silliness which gives the latter breakdown portion far more gravitas & also makes the line about shutting up and doing his job (right before he goes back into the silliness) make sense and carry more weight. He's going from "comedian/performer" to "real, honest person" and then quickly shuts himself away again before going back to "comedian/performer". I honestly thought that was really obvious. I think people just want to feel like they're connecting to him by thinking that they "figured it out" or understood some perceived deeper meaning that other people didn't/couldn't, thereby making them feel closer to him or like they relate to him on a more meaningful level.
@@lex224ification It only seems that way because you're consciously connecting the dots to make it fit, which human beings are prone to do. You are only thinking of the ways it CAN fit or make sense rather than the ways it doesn't or the ways it could fit something else entirely.
He actually mentioned a sentence after this one that it maybe was the analogy discussed in the video, but subconsciously. I think it is has to be connected subconsciously since it has too many connected dots for it not being influenced by his subconscious, especially since he chose to sing this part right after the “breakdown” and not the Pringles or gym ones (or something else)
I agree. That was heart wrenching... My initial reaction was "they don't get it". But then as I thought about it, it's probably quite a few who got it, but the revert back to comedy gave them the release from the tension he built up from being serious. He's done it in other bits as well where he lures you into not knowing if you should laugh or cry. I tend to do both at once myself when that happens.
It's interesting because I always thought of it as encouragement from the audience because that's how I felt. So much relatable tension was built up and when he goes to the last half of it, the audience cheer was more like saying "yes, release that tension, let it out" rather than "haha it's funny again." It's cathartic. From what I've heard from people who were actually present for the tour too, people left cheering and crying at the same time. It's a sense of relief.

Yes it’s true, because the Kanye rant was about pointless things, as Bo stated, and then Kanye went into a serious rant. So Bo went the same route with his message, rant about pointless things and then at the end it became a bit more serious. Nothing hidden in his message here
Yeah this. I see so much misinformation go around about him due to the telephone effect. Like we know he was having panic attacks during this tour (I think he's said he had 9 of them on stage) and it's turned into "he was having a panic attack during this exact performance, he was having panic attacks every single show." Like, no. We don't know that. In fact he said he had two performances the night this was recorded, and he was having anxiety during/after the first one, but he felt much more loose and calm during the second showing, and most of what became the special came from that second showing.
I'm seeing a lot of comments wondering how people could laugh and cheer to "I should probably just shut up and do my job so here I go.." and I just wanted to clarify. I know my experience isn't everyone's, but I saw this on tour back in 2014 and experiencing the whole thing in its entirety is completely different from seeing this one clip (or even the recording). Personally I feel like the laugh/cheer was that of empathy -- kind of like a nervous laugh, or the same sort you give when someone makes a dark joke about a tragedy they experienced. The feeling behind it was less "Dance, monkey, dance!" and more encouraging, like a "you got this, we feel you, we're right here with you". Does that make sense? I left the show feeling incredibly concerned, confused, and guilty, and I loved every bit of it. He got his point across, and it was amazing.
I had the same experience. I was a comedy booker, worked in clubs for over a decade. So I have seen a lot of comedians. Seen them on and off stage and working through the process. I have been following Bo since he was doing videos in his bedroom and was still in high school. It was definitely something that had me want to check on him. My late hubs was a comedian/comedy writer and took his own life. I wish I could say that worry about seeing performers having panic attacks on stage or right after is unusual but it isn't. Bo us doing the world a huge service by being able to articulate his struggles.

Yes, if people took the time to watch some of the interviews, people might understand their reading way too much into it, are their unconscious meanings behind it, probably, that's pretty much true for every human, its called unintentional coincidence. Bottom line people have to understand is that Bo is an entertainer, an artist, an actor, people forget that its acting for the purpose of entertainment, Bo is IMHO a Master of his craft, but that comes from time, hard work, dedication being a visionary and spending 3 years for a 90 minute show. Does he have anxiety attacks, sure, but I believe based on what Bo himself has talked about in different interviews that he has learned to work within the confines of his issues in other words, he has found a way to embrace his anxiety and use it to his advantage so in essence, he is in full control of the illness, not the other way around and their lays the difference. humans are amazing creatures we can overcome most anything if we put our minds to it, where some people are trapped by fear, others use it, they embrace it and control it. we all have that power. So there's that... something to ponder on... I just think people are reading in to this a lot more than what's needed, I have heard many people say Bo is depressed and I don't think that's the case at all, does he get depressed from time to time, probably, but what human doesn't? it's not really a trait experienced by Bo alone. To be Clear, I love Bo, He is an amazing artist and performer, I heard him say once in an interviews, his real passion is theatrical drama and with this he is a master at performing, just remember, it's an act that comes straight from the heart, it's emotional, it's smart, it's funny, it's musical, it's human, and he is true to his form, he is authentic and real and I also consider him to be and educator because he makes everyone think more deeply and as a result, people learn more about themselves in the process, and isn't that really what it's all about? so please try and keep things in a logical perspective, we all have emotions, but its important that we think logically and not emotionally. Because emotional problem solving has never once in all of human history ever solved anything because emotional thinking is irrational and chaotic, EGO needs to be kept in check.
Bo had always suffered from anxiety and panic attacks and depression. It got so bad during the "Make Happy" tour (the last one he did before filming the "Inside" special for Netflix) that he actually broke down several times during and after some performances. He took a five year break from touring and performing live in order to try and get better, which he did, but he wasn't just sitting in his room during that time. He produced and directed several things, a couple of specials for other comedians including one for Chris Rock and directed an indie movie. He spent a year then, just when Covid hit and everyone was quarantined, working on "Inside". He shot it entirely himself, wrote all of the material and songs, performed them, recorded and edited everything himself. It's a pre-recorded performance piece which he did alone in his guest house. He used some audience applause and laughter tracks to make it seem more like a live performance but none of it was shot in front of a live audience.
the tragic thing about this performance is that bo's audience was silent when he was speaking about his true struggles (which they should, because it wasn't funny) but they then immediately erupted into claps and cheers when bo said "i should just shut up and do my job". as if they aren't aware that they're proving bo right. that people don't care as long as you make it funny and theatrical
I think in that moment it was more theatre etiquette, cheering in the pauses n stuff like that Is encouraged in theatre, but I get your point completely and even still you’re right
Yeah that was the point. He knew that would happen. He literally ends the show with “Thank you, good night. I hope you’re happy.” He’s not hoping the audience has happy lives. He’s saying “I hope you’re happy with yourselves.” Very ominous.

The third yell makes me tear up every time. It wasn't just like the first two. I have loved Bo and his creativity since her first started I kinda grew up with him. I just feel like he needed someone. Had I been at that show I would of been telling his security to do wellness checks on him because he was not ok.

I love him so much. I feel his struggle, I’m not in any spotlight but I deal with social anxiety and panic attacks. He’s truly a multitalented genius and I say that sincerely. That said you can clearly hear it in his voice when he’s yelling and it really hit me
I always love watching Bo Burnham's songs and specials because he is very talented but it also makes me sad inside to know how he was feeling at the time.
I've said this other places, but if you haven't noticed, he sings "I don't think that I can handle this right now", but then emphasizes what's going on "now". Then his ending lines are, "I'll handle THIS right, handle this RIGHT, handle this right NOW", and leaving for five years to handle it...and I'm so happy he did handle it and gave us a masterpiece once again INSIDE.
Something not a lot of people realize, because they haven't seen the Netflix special, is he didn't technically end it with "Can't Handle This". He ended his live show with it, but he ended the special itself with a song called "Are You Happy?" It's a very short song, it doesn't even have an official upload on youtube either, but I think it's still worth checking out. Not for a video necessarily because it's quite a short song, but just in general.
Love love love this meeting of you 3 and your combined enjoyment and excitement and discovery of new layers of this song. Also wanted to point out something with the lighting. First all of the lighting choices are amazing but also super intentional. And wanted to say specifically toward the end when he gets backlit by that single almost yellow spotlight. As he goes back into the “funny” part of the song saying you can tell them anything if you just make it rhyme - he gets backlit which makes him just a black silhouette. Which to me is him removing himself as a person and signifies the feeling he gets that he has to just be and do what the audience wants. I think it represents the parts of his himself that he feels he has to edit himself or give the audience something that isn’t completely what he’d like to show. And then at the very end the lights go crazy flashing and darting everywhere as he repeats I don’t think I can handle this right now and let’s put multiple primal screams. To show the chaos that creates in his mind and his struggle. This is why he spends like 3 years in between each special. He creates and scripts every bit of his specials down to every minute detail. And we love him for that!
Courageous truth wrapped into an amazing performance. Like everyone in the audience, I also applauded at the end to recognize his incredible performance, but I think more to celebrate and honor his courage for speaking his truth. The applause was everyone's heart going out to him.
I appreciate that Bo Burnham went through some mental health issues after this; especially his struggle with panic attacks and I don't doubt that he's being honest. But people always talk about him being off for 5 years like he was hiding in a cave! Bo wrote and directed a movie in that time! He also wrote and book, did interview, went on comedy podcasts... He's sustaining a successful relationship and lives in a big beautiful House! I don't doubt that's he's a true artist but clearly he's not as fragile as people think.
@@sunxel3264 I just think it’s odd that people gravitate to this part of his story so much; he’s a suffering artist sure but the prt we should all really relate to is being trapped inside. If we’re impressed by Bo it should be because of his work ethic and creativity during that time, or his commentary on our failing society. But in terms of his anxiety clearly he’s always had a handle on it; hence the impressive material he made regardless over those 5 years!

Like your thoughts and everything but there is something to letting someone experience something for the first time? Like I feel like you guys were kind of giving it away and that gut wrenching realization I feel like is the best part? It's fine but something to consider. The emotional weight of the song is what makes people come back to it over and over again. Watched Jacobs and his comments were pretty harsh but he straight up googled the pedal in the middle of it and missed a LOT of the emotional parts of the song. Fair because I don't think he knew a lot about Bo Burnham but idk. Still a good reaction but I just wanted to mention this as something to think about generally.
I feel the same way. While I was interested in Brad’s additional thoughts (I’ve been loving Brad’s reactions so far), I was also interested to see Dennis’ fresh reaction, so it was frustrating that Brad and Jacob jumped right in after the pause and didn’t give the floor to Dennis first. I can appreciate the excitement to share thoughts on such an amazing song with a friend. I also think, for this video, stepping back, giving away nothing more than a knowing look at the camera, and then asking Dennis “So, what do you think?” should have been priority numero uno.

All of the analogies about the happiness burrito and pringles were brought up to Bo in an interview, and he said he didn’t intend to have any deeper meaning than just some stupid problems. But he also said jokingly that it could be his subconscious writing.
@@mounthope2567 well when you juxtapose the mundane meaningless problems to the real stuff he gets into, then it leaves the real stuff with so much more power. When you look too far into it, then the intended emotional stuff becomes less impactful. But I guess when it comes to art, everything is subjective, and the artists intention/meaning behind it kind of goes out the window when opening it to millions of people :).

I loved you guys reaction to this video. I didnt scroll down and read the comments but I wonder if anyone else thought of Robin Williams when they watched this. A lot of comedians love and are good at making people laugh because they don't want anyone to feel the way they feel inside. Bo's Netflix special "Inside" I thought was genius. It draws you in and gives you a completely different perspective and feeling towards mental illness. And for those of us that struggle with mental illness applaud because we are right there with him. Finally someone put it all together to show regular people and help them understand while making it entertaining. Bo Burnham is a brilliant and talented man.

The way King Family guy says "it hits you from both sides" talking about the gym comments and the burrito and it's like that Frozen meme - 'I'm gonna tell him!' 'Don't you dare!'. Bo will find new sides you didn't even know you had and he will punch all of them.
something really interesting i've seen someone talk about is in the burrito bit, bo uses the term 'burrito expert' and that could be seen as a sort of double entendre. he's talking about the guy making the burrito, obviously, but it could also be talking about the people in his life and the people he looked up to. he's singing about how a this someone who has lived longer or lived the experience of fame, should have warned him how hard it is to balance stardom and being a human being because that's supposed to be their job. he even sounds bitter saying it because it must be so lonely and isolating, and no one even thought to tell him the affects of it. fun little interpretation i thought about while watching this, loved the reactions
I hope someday to find a comment on a reaction from someone who saw this show live. His feelings are just so palpable watching this recording it is hard to imagine they wouldn't have been even stronger in the room.
Alot of artists have realized that most people dont listen to what they are actually saying, OutKasts song hey ya has the line in it "y'all dont wanna hear me, you just wanna dance." They completely missed that it was a sad song about a break up because it had an upbeat tempo.
I dont think the burrito part is a metaphor. I think it's just a burrito, intentionally mundane and not a real life problem so that it juxtaposes against the much heavier parts of the song for great dramatic effect.
The burrito and Pringles can are definitely metaphors. “I want to please you, but I want to stay true to myself” is him having to walk a tightrope (the diameter of a Pringles can is too small). “I don’t think I can handle this right now” is him feeling overwhelmed by the fame, success, pressure, etc (burrito overfilling).
I've always said God is amazing, but to be introduced to Bo Burnham today is one of those moments. Wednesday, my girlfriend told me that she was struggling and that she was already dead. Yesterday, she ended up getting fired from her job as a dancer due to a blow up at work with a co-worker, but everything she told me is EXACTLY how Bo felt. She even tried to kill herself in my car as I was driving her home after being fired. Everything he said, she could have easily said. I can't imagine the chills you get watching this video being more impacting than the chills I got. I'm so glad Bo was able to get the help he needed, and I hope he has a strong support around him. You think back to how many comedians alone who have committed suicide, it's a real struggle and we need to always remember how many times people laugh on the surface but are crying inside. Thank you for sharing this.

Good take with the lighting near the end, hiding Bo. It is like "You guys don't care about me, really, you just came for the entertainment. Well, here ya go." I like reaction stuff with multiple people discussing during pauses and whatnot, rather than just explaining things to each other. So this was really cool. He actually cam out saying he had a huge panic attack while singing that song which is why at the end he just mic drops and walks off. He came back to bow because he felt he needed to.
You should watch the Bo Burnham's montage created for the Hollywood Critics Association. He won an award for his special and the montage features his early work as well his directing and acting projects during his 5 year hiatus from live comedy. AND, you are in it for a hot second!

I think all the stuff at the end was showing his own mental state also, the screams and everything, of course, but also the way the lights are going all over the place chaotically and the way the camera angles cut frantically, as well (everything before that camera wise was more static but at that last moment, they're all over the place)
Just remember, this wasn't the LAST bit he did before his hiatus. "Are You Happy?", the last song of this special, is what really hits hard knowing what happened to him afterwards. "On a scale of one to zero, are you happy? / 'Cause you're on your own from here so are you happy? / I'm open to suggestions; are you happy? / But what the fuck kinda question is 'Are you happy'?"
It was his last live moment though. Are You Happy was prerecorded. But I get your point, it’d be better for reactors to include the end of the special.
Also the burrito is for sure a metaphor for his situation but I think subtlety the pringles can thing is as well and in the same way as he can’t get it all and when/if he does (in his case he did) find a way to get what he thought he wanted it went metaphorically “all over his face”.
I think that the Pringles Story is also a metaphor (similar to the Burrito metaphor): It's about his tries to Resch his goals, but he never really got it. So he ist happy to have an daughter around (or an other person from the younger generation, so he can watch them trying to archive their goals (hopefully successfull because of their "smaller hands").
Protip: pour the Pringles into bowl. A lot of his stuff is creating the background music then performing to it. Check out "We Think We Know You" or "Left Brain / Right Brain" for the most extreme examples.
Oh wow, I just noticed when he's giving the facts and says "I should just shut up and do my job..." that this is all factual and he uses the same lighting color (blue) as in Left Brain / Right Brain.

I'm looking forward to more, especially if you have more reactions with these other guys and Inside! that would be awesome. however, i have one critique which is i think kind of important, for me personally, which is that you tended to pause and then tease/spoil what was about to happen. As a viewer, it's a little frustrating because I'm watching for the reaction, which is less fresh if you are hyping up or hinting at what's coming next. Video was otherwise great! What I heard is that he denied the burrito metaphor. He said it was just a bit of comedy with no deeper meaning. However, this is Bo we're talking about. Nothing is ever incidental. You can imagine that his initial jaunts into comedy were merely inquisitive. Nobody expects it to blow up and nobody is ever prepared for that sort of fame. It must have been flabbergasting, and for a mind as empathetic as his, a mind that sees everything from every angle, incomprehensibly overwhelming. "Wouldn't have got the lettuce if I knew it wouldn't fit, wouldn't have got the cheese..." If he knew what he knows now, would we ever have gotten to glimpse this extraordinary man and his insight?
No, no, no. What he actually said was that people overanalyze this song. The pringles cans and burritos are just random silly things to rant about... kinda what Kanye often does.
@@BradSteele The thing is that with the line about "you can tell them anything" a lot of people feel like it was intended that way even though he says it wasn't. Another thing he has said before is that everything he tells people publicly is a lie. It's all various amount of lies. So some people will comment saying that it's the intended meaning because they honestly think it's the intended meaning a Bo just doesn't want people to *only* look at it that way. It's complicated. But in general, YT comments are great for picking up on *ways* it could be interpreted, but not on the *intended* meaning. Bo, as a matter of course, refuses to provide intended meaning. That's the *actual* truth. There is some kind of meaning he had in mind, but he routinely tells contradictory accounts of what different bits mean, because he hates the idea that he is the only one that decides the meaning, and he wants people to find the meaning that is most useful to them. :) So you were wrong, and you were also right. And now you're right, and are also wrong. *shrug* You reactions are great because you're willing to look at things. Your friend's perspective on it relating it to parenting was something that had never occurred to me, and also a meaning that Bo couldn't have intended, because Bo doesn't have kids so he doesn't have the experience to draw from. But it's a totally valid way to relate to what was said, and that's what Bo wants to preserve in general. He's said before that it's all just jokes and funny, yet in the song he almost explicitly calls it a metaphor for his anxiety. In "Inside" the scenes in which he is the most "real" and "raw" and "emotional" are also the ones that are most explicitly staged: the breakdown where he rushes the camera meant that he had to set up the camera in the back ahead of time to get that specific shot, the screwing up of takes is something that he chose to include in editing the special, the part where he says he isn't well and cries is lit in a way that is specifically designed to capture that scene. Bo was very young when he blew up on UA-cam in the early days. Here he was this average kid who suddenly was a major star and he had no idea how to handle it. The thing is that we have seen this before with comedians, Robin Williams is a great example, he was an amazing comedian and performer, but he hid his true feelings behind his jokes. Nobody saw the pain that he was struggling with which is why it was so surprising to hear what happened to him. I feel Bo is the same way but Bo decided to incorporate it into his comedy and became more of a George Carlin of his generation. Pointing out the stuff that most people don't or won't talk about. I look forward to see what he gives us next because I don't think he is done yet.
Ugh, 1 last thing. After this song the special doesn’t end. There’s kind of a pre-credits scene where he sings 1 more song (a very beautiful song btw) off stage. And it’s in that same guest house (which is the guest house in his own backyard of his main house that he shares with his longterm GF who is an accomplished director in her own right) that he films Inside in 5 years later!!
Her already had panic attacks during this tour. During this very performance if I understand things correctly. Thats the last, broken up scream roght before the end, apparently he went back stage and cried for hours as soon as the lights went out. Hes breaking down roght befor their eyes and everyone is just cheering and clapping right after he literally told them that this was exactly what was happening and how they would react. Its one of the most heart breaking performance ever.

I always notice how the moment the lights go down everyone stops cheering or making any noise, yet the moment he goes back to the lettuce thing, everyone starts cheering. Which only further emphasizes the truth of what he's saying: no one wants to hear him be serious. They're just waiting for him to get back to the funny stuff.
i think that might be a somewhat cynical take on it…i see it like this. if you were in that audience and you were watching this performance for the first time, how would you feel? based on how i felt when i first watched the special i assume i would be overstimulated, impressed, shocked, and feeling a ton of things at once. when u have that many things going on as an audience member during a comedy show, how can u express the emotions you’re feeling, or convey “i am extremely invested in this performance”? the options are cry, cheer, boo, or laugh, basically. laughter can also be a shocked reaction when your body doesnt know what to do, and i think a lot of time when bo gets laughs in places that just should NOT have laughs, its the audience subconsciously going “i know i need to react to show approval right now but im not sure how to express that emotion,” and then it comes out as a laugh. it must be BEYOND dehumanizing and strange from bo’s (and an outside viewer’s) point of view, but i think it makes sense when u consider the audience trying and failing to find the proper way to react. like WHAT is there to to as an audience member to show bo how much you think his work is great in realtime, besides cheer? but the fact that they go quiet when he goes quiet, and are ready to listen…i think rather, that means they’re genuinely listening and want to hear what he has to say when hes serious.

I took a class about comedy in college, and one of the most interesting things we learned were the reasons people laugh. It's not just because something is funny. Sometimes laughter is a release of tension or a subconscious expression of our innate desire to fit in. I think a lot of the laughter Bo evokes with his comedy are the tension relieving laughs from blatantly and unapologetically calling out harsh truths and subverting expectations. He's a clever one, that Bo.
Thank you for pointing this out, because it really resonates with my experience. I am what you'd call a "nervous laugher" and I cannot control it. The more inappropriate the situation, the more I laugh. Highly troublesome trying to help an old lady get up after falling while loling uncontrollably. The first time I watched Inside I laughed at everything, because I didn't know how to integrate what was happening and I felt stressed. The subsequent 16 viewings I did not laugh, just cried. Laughter is not always ignorant and malicious, for me it's a stress response.
I would be embarrassed to say how many times I've watched Bo's "Can't handle this - Kanye Rant" video. The only thing better is watching someone experience it for the first time. I love how you guys set him up for success by explaining things that no one gets the first time around. Solid.
I can say without shame that I’ve watched THIS PARTICULAR SONG 100s to 1000s of times. Pretty much whenever I see people talking about it I say it’s my favorite BB song and point out that it’s basically the performance of an anxiety attack.

Bo didnt perform live for 5 years but he did produce comedy shows for other comedians and made a movie called 8th grade. And ive heard that now he will make music for sesame street!!
He was also one of the leads in a movie that got nominated for tons of Oscars (Promising Young Woman) and he's pretty good in it.

In an interview with him, Bo actually mentioned that pringles and burrito analogy weren’t made by him. It’s just what people saw. He simply made a joke about a relatable thing. Which leads to a debate about what’s more important, what author put in his art, or what we got out of it.
It also opened up an interesting conversation about whether artists sometimes "unconsciously" put meaning into their work without even realizing it. I.e., maybe the fact that Bo was thinking about these deeper struggles caused him to reference Pringles and burritos in a similar way.

Yeah I definitely thought people were reaching with the implied metaphors. That would kind of defeat the overall significance of the song's structure, where the first part is meant to actually just be random silliness which gives the latter breakdown portion far more gravitas & also makes the line about shutting up and doing his job (right before he goes back into the silliness) make sense and carry more weight. He's going from "comedian/performer" to "real, honest person" and then quickly shuts himself away again before going back to "comedian/performer".
I honestly thought that was really obvious. I think people just want to feel like they're connecting to him by thinking that they "figured it out" or understood some perceived deeper meaning that other people didn't/couldn't, thereby making them feel closer to him or like they relate to him on a more meaningful level.
@@lex224ification It only seems that way because you're consciously connecting the dots to make it fit, which human beings are prone to do. You are only thinking of the ways it CAN fit or make sense rather than the ways it doesn't or the ways it could fit something else entirely.
He actually mentioned a sentence after this one that it maybe was the analogy discussed in the video, but subconsciously. I think it is has to be connected subconsciously since it has too many connected dots for it not being influenced by his subconscious, especially since he chose to sing this part right after the “breakdown” and not the Pringles or gym ones (or something else)
Each time I rewatch this, the most powerful part is the 3 screams of pain at the end. Just heartbreaking, and more so when nobody seems to notice. 💔

I agree. That was heart wrenching... My initial reaction was "they don't get it". But then as I thought about it, it's probably quite a few who got it, but the revert back to comedy gave them the release from the tension he built up from being serious. He's done it in other bits as well where he lures you into not knowing if you should laugh or cry. I tend to do both at once myself when that happens.
It's interesting because I always thought of it as encouragement from the audience because that's how I felt. So much relatable tension was built up and when he goes to the last half of it, the audience cheer was more like saying "yes, release that tension, let it out" rather than "haha it's funny again." It's cathartic. From what I've heard from people who were actually present for the tour too, people left cheering and crying at the same time. It's a sense of relief.

Yeah this. I see so much misinformation go around about him due to the telephone effect. Like we know he was having panic attacks during this tour (I think he's said he had 9 of them on stage) and it's turned into "he was having a panic attack during this exact performance, he was having panic attacks every single show." Like, no. We don't know that. In fact he said he had two performances the night this was recorded, and he was having anxiety during/after the first one, but he felt much more loose and calm during the second showing, and most of what became the special came from that second showing.
I'm seeing a lot of comments wondering how people could laugh and cheer to "I should probably just shut up and do my job so here I go.." and I just wanted to clarify. I know my experience isn't everyone's, but I saw this on tour back in 2014 and experiencing the whole thing in its entirety is completely different from seeing this one clip (or even the recording). Personally I feel like the laugh/cheer was that of empathy -- kind of like a nervous laugh, or the same sort you give when someone makes a dark joke about a tragedy they experienced. The feeling behind it was less "Dance, monkey, dance!" and more encouraging, like a "you got this, we feel you, we're right here with you". Does that make sense? I left the show feeling incredibly concerned, confused, and guilty, and I loved every bit of it. He got his point across, and it was amazing.
I had the same experience. I was a comedy booker, worked in clubs for over a decade. So I have seen a lot of comedians. Seen them on and off stage and working through the process. I have been following Bo since he was doing videos in his bedroom and was still in high school.
It was definitely something that had me want to check on him. My late hubs was a comedian/comedy writer and took his own life. I wish I could say that worry about seeing performers having panic attacks on stage or right after is unusual but it isn't. Bo us doing the world a huge service by being able to articulate his struggles.

Yes, if people took the time to watch some of the interviews, people might understand their reading way too much into it, are their unconscious meanings behind it, probably, that's pretty much true for every human, its called unintentional coincidence.
Bottom line people have to understand is that Bo is an entertainer, an artist, an actor, people forget that its acting for the purpose of entertainment, Bo is IMHO a Master of his craft, but that comes from time, hard work, dedication being a visionary and spending 3 years for a 90 minute show.
Does he have anxiety attacks, sure, but I believe based on what Bo himself has talked about in different interviews that he has learned to work within the confines of his issues in other words, he has found a way to embrace his anxiety and use it to his advantage so in essence, he is in full control of the illness, not the other way around and their lays the difference. humans are amazing creatures we can overcome most anything if we put our minds to it, where some people are trapped by fear, others use it, they embrace it and control it. we all have that power.
So there's that... something to ponder on... I just think people are reading in to this a lot more than what's needed, I have heard many people say Bo is depressed and I don't think that's the case at all, does he get depressed from time to time, probably, but what human doesn't? it's not really a trait experienced by Bo alone.
To be Clear, I love Bo, He is an amazing artist and performer, I heard him say once in an interviews, his real passion is theatrical drama and with this he is a master at performing, just remember, it's an act that comes straight from the heart, it's emotional, it's smart, it's funny, it's musical, it's human, and he is true to his form, he is authentic and real and I also consider him to be and educator because he makes everyone think more deeply and as a result, people learn more about themselves in the process, and isn't that really what it's all about? so please try and keep things in a logical perspective, we all have emotions, but its important that we think logically and not emotionally. Because emotional problem solving has never once in all of human history ever solved anything because emotional thinking is irrational and chaotic, EGO needs to be kept in check.

The audience goes crazy with applause because all things considered, it was a MAGNIFICENT performance.
Bo had always suffered from anxiety and panic attacks and depression. It got so bad during the "Make Happy" tour (the last one he did before filming the "Inside" special for Netflix) that he actually broke down several times during and after some performances. He took a five year break from touring and performing live in order to try and get better, which he did, but he wasn't just sitting in his room during that time. He produced and directed several things, a couple of specials for other comedians including one for Chris Rock and directed an indie movie. He spent a year then, just when Covid hit and everyone was quarantined, working on "Inside".
He shot it entirely himself, wrote all of the material and songs, performed them, recorded and edited everything himself. It's a pre-recorded performance piece which he did alone in his guest house. He used some audience applause and laughter tracks to make it seem more like a live performance but none of it was shot in front of a live audience.

the tragic thing about this performance is that bo's audience was silent when he was speaking about his true struggles (which they should, because it wasn't funny) but they then immediately erupted into claps and cheers when bo said "i should just shut up and do my job". as if they aren't aware that they're proving bo right. that people don't care as long as you make it funny and theatrical

The third yell makes me tear up every time. It wasn't just like the first two. I have loved Bo and his creativity since her first started I kinda grew up with him. I just feel like he needed someone. I've said this other places, but if you haven't noticed, he sings "I don't think that I can handle this right now", but then emphasizes what's going on "now". Then his ending lines are, "I'll handle THIS right, handle this RIGHT, handle this right NOW", and leaving for five years to handle it...and I'm so happy he did handle it and gave us a masterpiece once again INSIDE.
Something not a lot of people realize, because they haven't seen the Netflix special, is he didn't technically end it with "Can't Handle This". He ended his live show with it, but he ended the special itself with a song called "Are You Happy?" It's a very short song, it doesn't even have an official upload on youtube either, but I think it's still worth checking out. Not for a video necessarily because it's quite a short song, but just in general.
Love love love this meeting of you 3 and your combined enjoyment and excitement and discovery of new layers of this song. Also wanted to point out something with the lighting. First all of the lighting choices are amazing but also super intentional. And wanted to say specifically toward the end when he gets backlit by that single almost yellow spotlight. As he goes back into the “funny” part of the song saying you can tell them anything if you just make it rhyme - he gets backlit which makes him just a black silhouette. Which to me is him removing himself as a person and signifies the feeling he gets that he has to just be and do what the audience wants. I think it represents the parts of his himself that he feels he has to edit himself or give the audience something that isn’t completely what he’d like to show. And then at the very end the lights go crazy flashing and darting everywhere as he repeats I don’t think I can handle this right now and let’s put multiple primal screams. To show the chaos that creates in his mind and his struggle. This is why he spends like 3 years in between each special. He creates and scripts every bit of his specials down to every minute detail. And we love him for that!
Courageous truth wrapped into an amazing performance. Like everyone in the audience, I also applauded at the end to recognize his incredible performance, but I think more to celebrate and honor his courage for speaking his truth. The applause was everyone's heart going out to him.
I appreciate that Bo Burnham went through some mental health issues after this; especially his struggle with panic attacks and I don't doubt that he's being honest. But people always talk about him being off for 5 years like he was hiding in a cave! Bo wrote and directed a movie in that time! He also wrote and book, did interview, went on comedy podcasts... He's sustaining a successful relationship and lives in a big beautiful House! I don't doubt that's he's a true artist but clearly he's not as fragile as people think.

If we’re impressed by Bo it should be because of his work ethic and creativity during that time, or his commentary on our failing society. But in terms of his anxiety clearly he’s always had a handle on it; hence the impressive material he made regardless over those 5 years!

Like your thoughts and everything but there is something to letting someone experience something for the first time? Like I feel like you guys were kind of giving it away and that gut wrenching realization I feel like is the best part? It's fine but something to consider. The emotional weight of the song is what makes people come back to it over and over again. Watched Jacobs and his comments were pretty harsh but he straight up googled the pedal in the middle of it and missed a LOT of the emotional parts of the song. Fair because I don't think he knew a lot about Bo Burnham but idk. Still a good reaction but I just wanted to mention this as something to think about generally.
I feel the same way. While I was interested in Brad’s additional thoughts (I’ve been loving Brad’s reactions so far), I was also interested to see Dennis’ fresh reaction, so it was frustrating that Brad and Jacob jumped right in after the pause and didn’t give the floor to Dennis first.
I can appreciate the excitement to share thoughts on such an amazing song with a friend. I also think, for this video, stepping back, giving away nothing more than a knowing look at the camera, and then asking Dennis “So, what do you think?” should have been priority numero uno.

All of the analogies about the happiness burrito and pringles were brought up to Bo in an interview, and he said he didn’t intend to have any deeper meaning than just some stupid problems. But he also said jokingly that it could be his subconscious writing.

@@mounthope2567 well when you juxtapose the mundane meaningless problems to the real stuff he gets into, then it leaves the real stuff with so much more power. When you look too far into it, then the intended emotional stuff becomes less impactful. But I guess when it comes to art, everything is subjective, and the artists intention/meaning behind it kind of goes out the window when opening it to millions of people :).

The whole "steadily declining mental health..." lines i think always gives people chills because that's such a hard thing to say out loud but Bo does it in a theater full of people.
I loved you guys reaction to this video. I didnt scroll down and read the comments but I wonder if anyone else thought of Robin Williams when they watched this. A lot of comedians love and are good at making people laugh because they don't want anyone to feel the way they feel inside. Bo's Netflix special "Inside" I thought was genius. It draws you in and gives you a completely different perspective and feeling towards mental illness. And for those of us that struggle with mental illness applaud because we are right there with him. Finally someone put it all together to show regular people and help them understand while making it entertaining. Bo Burnham is a brilliant and talented man.

The way King Family guy says "it hits you from both sides" talking about the gym comments and the burrito and it's like that Frozen meme - 'I'm gonna tell him!' 'Don't you dare!'. Bo will find new sides you didn't even know you had and he will punch all of them.
something really interesting i've seen someone talk about is in the burrito bit, bo uses the term 'burrito expert' and that could be seen as a sort of double entendre.
he's talking about the guy making the burrito, obviously, but it could also be talking about the people in his life and the people he looked up to. he's singing about how a this someone who has lived longer or lived the experience of fame, should have warned him how hard it is to balance stardom and being a human being because that's supposed to be their job. he even sounds bitter saying it because it must be so lonely and isolating, and no one even thought to tell him the affects of it.

Alot of artists have realized that most people dont listen to what they are actually saying, OutKasts song hey ya has the line in it "y'all dont wanna hear me, you just wanna dance." They completely missed that it was a sad song about a break up because it had an upbeat tempo.
I dont think the burrito part is a metaphor. I think it's just a burrito, intentionally mundane and not a real life problem so that it juxtaposes against the much heavier parts of the song for great dramatic effect.
The burrito and Pringles can are definitely metaphors. “I want to please you, but I want to stay true to myself” is him having to walk a tightrope (the diameter of a Pringles can is too small). “I don’t think I can handle this right now” is him feeling overwhelmed by the fame, success, pressure, etc (burrito overfilling).

I've always said God is amazing, but to be introduced to Bo Burnham today is one of those moments. Wednesday, my girlfriend told me that she was struggling and that she was already dead. Yesterday, she ended up getting fired from her job as a dancer due to a blow up at work with a co-worker, but everything she told me is EXACTLY how Bo felt. She even tried to kill herself in my car as I was driving her home after being fired. Everything he said, she could have easily said. I can't imagine the chills you get watching this video being more impacting than the chills I got. I'm so glad Bo was able to get the help he needed, and I hope he has a strong support around him. You think back to how many comedians alone who have committed suicide, it's a real struggle and we need to always remember how many times people laugh on the surface but are crying inside. Thank you for sharing this.
U dont need a good voice for auto tune. I need to be able to sing. But learning to sing is a skill everyone can learn. A voice is what u got.

I like reaction stuff with multiple people discussing during pauses and whatnot, rather than just explaining things to each other. So this was really cool. I enjoyed hearing everyone's differing opinions.

You should watch the Bo Burnham's montage created for the Hollywood Critics Association. He won an award for his special and the montage features his early work as well his directing and acting projects during his 5 year hiatus from live comedy. AND, you are in it for a hot second!

I think all the stuff at the end was showing his own mental state also, the screams and everything, of course, but also the way the lights are going all over the place chaotically and the way the camera angles cut frantically, as well (everything before that camera wise was more static but at that last moment, they're all over the place)

Also the burrito is for sure a metaphor for his situation but I think subtlety the pringles can thing is as well and in the same way as he can’t get it all and when/if he does (in his case he did) find a way to get what he thought he wanted it went metaphorically “all over his face”.
I think that the Pringles Story is also a metaphor (similar to the Burrito metaphor): It's about his tries to Resch his goals, but he never really got it. So he ist happy to have an daughter around (or an other person from the younger generation, so he can watch them trying to archive their goals (hopefully successfull because of their "smaller hands").
After watching this finale, I can't even eat pringles without dying a little bit.

Okay. hey man, i like your videos! I'm looking forward to more, especially if you have more reactions with these other guys and Inside! that would be awesome. however, i have one critique which is i think kind of important, for me personally, which is that you tended to pause and then tease/spoil what was about to happen. As a viewer, it's a little frustrating because I'm watching for the reaction, which is less fresh if you are hyping up or hinting at what's coming next. Video was otherwise great! Keep up the great work, and I'll be on the lookout for more!

What I heard is that he denied the burrito metaphor. He said it was just a bit of comedy with no deeper meaning. However, this is Bo we're talking about. Nothing is ever incidental. You can imagine that his initial jaunts into comedy were merely inquisitive. Nobody expects it to blow up and nobody is ever prepared for that sort of fame. It must have been flabbergasting, and for a mind as empathetic as his, a mind that sees everything from every angle, incomprehensibly overwhelming. "Wouldn't have got the lettuce if I knew it wouldn't fit, wouldn't have got the cheese..."
If he knew what he knows now, would we ever have gotten to glimpse this extraordinary man and his insight?

@@BradSteele The thing is that with the line about "you can tell them anything" a lot of people feel like it was intended that way even though he says it wasn't. Another thing he has said before is that everything he tells people publicly is a lie. It's all various amount of lies.
So some people will comment saying that it's the intended meaning because they honestly think it's the intended meaning a Bo just doesn't want people to *only* look at it that way.
It's complicated. But in general, YT comments are great for picking up on *ways* it could be interpreted, but not on the *intended* meaning. Bo, as a matter of course, refuses to provide intended meaning. That's the *actual* truth. There is some kind of meaning he had in mind, but he routinely tells contradictory accounts of what different bits mean, because he hates the idea that he is the only one that decides the meaning, and he wants people to find the meaning that is most useful to them. :)
So you were wrong, and you were also right. And now you're right, and are also wrong. *shrug*
You reactions are great because you're willing to look at things.
Your friend's perspective on it relating it to parenting was something that had never occurred to me, and also a meaning that Bo couldn't have intended, because Bo doesn't have kids so he doesn't have the experience to draw from. But it's a totally valid way to relate to what was said, and that's what Bo wants to preserve in general.
He's said before that it's all just jokes and funny, yet in the song he almost explicitly calls it a metaphor for his anxiety. In "Inside" the scenes in which he is the most "real" and "raw" and "emotional" are also the ones that are most explicitly staged: the breakdown where he rushes the camera meant that he had to set up the camera in the back ahead of time to get that specific shot, the screwing up of takes is something that he chose to include in editing the special, the part where he says he isn't well and cries is lit in a way that is specifically designed to capture that scene. So it's all staged. But it also must express some kind of truth behind the lies about what sort of things he's experienced.

Bo was very young when he blew up on UA-cam in the early days. Here he was this average kid who suddenly was a major star and he had no idea how to handle it. The thing is that we have seen this before with comedians, Robin Williams is a great example, he was an amazing comedian and performer, but he hid his true feelings behind his jokes. Nobody saw the pain that he was struggling with which is why it was so surprising to hear what happened to him. I feel Bo is the same way but Bo decided to incorporate it into his comedy and became more of a George Carlin of his generation. Pointing out the stuff that most people don't or won't talk about. I look forward to see what he gives us next because I don't think he is done yet.

Ugh, 1 last thing. After this song the special doesn’t end. There’s kind of a pre-credits scene where he sings 1 more song (a very beautiful song btw) off stage. And it’s in that same guest house (which is the guest house in his own backyard of his main house that he shares with his longterm GF who is an accomplished director in her own right) that he films Inside in 5 years later!!

I always notice how the moment the lights go down everyone stops cheering or making any noise, yet the moment he goes back to the lettuce thing, everyone starts cheering. Which only further emphasizes the truth of what he's saying: no one wants to hear him be serious. They're just waiting for him to get back to the funny stuff.
i think that might be a somewhat cynical take on it…i see it like this. if you were in that audience and you were watching this performance for the first time, how would you feel? based on how i felt when i first watched the special i assume i would be overstimulated, impressed, shocked, and feeling a ton of things at once. when u have that many things going on as an audience member during a comedy show, how can u express the emotions you’re feeling, or convey “i am extremely invested in this performance”? the options are cry, cheer, boo, or laugh, basically. laughter can also be a shocked reaction when your body doesnt know what to do, and i think a lot of time when bo gets laughs in places that just should NOT have laughs, its the audience subconsciously going “i know i need to react to show approval right now but im not sure how to express that emotion,” and then it comes out as a laugh.
it must be BEYOND dehumanizing and strange from bo’s (and an outside viewer’s) point of view, but i think it makes sense when u consider the audience trying and failing to find the proper way to react. like WHAT is there to to as an audience member to show bo how much you think his work is great in realtime, besides cheer? but the fact that they go quiet when he goes quiet, and are ready to listen…i think rather, that means they’re genuinely listening and want to hear what he has to say when hes serious.
