@@msalasan I don't think its fair to blame the audience here for not understanding. He did an amazing job masking his crisis here especially when performing to an audience who are just trying to have a good time while trying to forget their own troubles. It is genuinely difficult to understand how someone else is feeling on a personal level. It is exponentially harder when the artist is professionally masking their emotions at a comedy show and trying to make others happy who probably need it.

That line tears me up inside every damn time I hear it. Every. Single. Time. As with many true artists, actors, comedians, singers, etc. who are depressed, they try to make others laugh so that they never have to feel that low. Giving others a laugh when they can't even laugh themselves.

You're the first reactor I've seen that responded to 14:40 the same way I did. "I guess I'll just shut up and do my job, so here I go" followed by going right back into the burrito bit. Except, this time, he's just like a mindless drone performing for his audience. He knows the audience doesn't care about what he's feeling. He's there to perform, and that's what they paid for. It really opened my eyes to viewing celebrities in a different light. Who knows what they have going on behind the stage?

I was tearing up with you and I saw this show live. I was crying at the end, felt hypocritical to clap but I didn't know how else to try and let him know he was appreciated for being honest, that I wanted to just fucking hug him.
During this recording, he went into a panic attack during the last bit of the song. He couldn't get the mic to turn off so he dropped it while it was on and went back to his dressing room and broke down for an hour (per one of the few interviews he's done since).
All Eyes on Me from his Inside special is a good next step. Him talking about those panic attacks and trying to get better. It'll make you cry, but fuck it's worth it.

But sure, take my criticism of the video as a personal insult and be a little child about it.

    • @MalkuthSephira
      @MalkuthSephira Рік тому +5

@@benboom910 Alright then, I'll give a more detailed response, though the reason I didn't do that in the first place is how clear it was that nothing I can say will get through in the slightest.
Firstly, let's establish the obvious - you chose to say something that I personally think is very stupid in public, which you had every right to do, and I chose to respond rudely, which I also had every right to do. I'm assuming that those basic facts are something you already understand, but I think it's the sort of thing that is worth establishing openly on my side regardless.
So. I don't think EVERY humorous thing Bo Burnham writes has a double meaning. But I do think that a hell of a lot of it does. As far as I'm aware this song remains, to this day, his last ever live show, and he clearly put an extraordinary amount of work into it. If he's specified somewhere that THIS song is one he feels people are reading too much into, which is not something I've seen but might exist somewhere for all I know, I'm honestly inclined not to believe him, but that's not actually the issue here.
Truly talented artists often end up putting more meaning into even sillier parts of whatever they're making than they intend to, and Bo is the definition of a truly talented artist. It is not even necessary for him to have intended for two thirds of one of the most important songs he's ever written to have a deeper meaning for it to have subconsciously seeped through anyway.
...But even THAT isn't actually the issue here, and the issue exists whether or not one thinks those parts of the song had deeper meaning OR whether said deeper meaning was consciously or unconsciously included, so let's get to work breaking this down. It'll be slightly out of order because I think it's ideal to address a certain statement you made before continuing.
I took nothing you originally said as a personal insult. The person I feel you insulted was the REACTOR, and that is why I bothered insulting you myself. I have seen countless people have takes on Bo's stuff that I believe are stupid, and sometimes that pisses me off on Bo's behalf, but in this case the person on whose behalf I'm angry is neither Bo or myself. If it's childish to be rude in response to someone was rude to a person one respects, then I suppose I'm childish, but even if that's how one interprets it, I don't think it's nearly as childish as being rude to someone for caring deeply about art and finding meaning in it. In fact, the absurdity of being rude to someone for finding meaning and emotion in art is why I didn't write a more detailed reply in the first place. I did not think someone behaving that way was worth spending more time on. But I suppose I've changed my mind - to me, this is now worth one detailed post, which is what I'm delivering.
So, with THAT established, I'll expound a bit further.
Even if it genuinely IS a complete accident that the Pringles and Chipotle jokes can be read as tying into the central of the song, which, again, I myself doubt, it is still valid to personally interpret them as parts of a cohesive and deeper whole and to be emotionally moved by them. Art is utterly subjective by its fundamental nature, and I think that finding depth and relevance here in a way that makes perfect sense in tandem with the more directly delivered message of this particular piece of art is admirable, whether or not the artist expected anyone to do that. Hell, even if the artist didn't WANT anyone to do that, when one releases art to the public, one is accepting (consciously or otherwise) that the public will have their own interpretations that will not always be identical to the artist's intent.
The reason I was angry enough to bother being rude to you is pretty simple: a human being watched and listened to a piece of art and found deep meaning there, and you said that his interpretation and show of emotion was "forced" just because you have a different interpretation. That goes beyond simply disagreeing with someone, which can be done politely, and enters the realm of legitimately insulting them. Delivering that insult is a deeply disrespectful thing to do, and while you have the right to express your opinion in that way, I sure as hell have the right to be disrespectful to you in response. Live by the sword and all that. If you're too thin-skinned to take what you dish out, you may want to consider dishing it out less often. Or not - that's entirely your call. Maybe you're just a glutton for retaliation, I don't know.
So, I suppose a decent summary would be this: you insulted someone who found deep meaning in art, and I insulted you in response because the thought of saying nothing in that situation does not align with how I want to live my life. I did not consider your original behavior to be worth exploring in this much detail, but since you responded directly and I have some time to kill, I decided that I'd enjoy responding to clarify my point.
I saw no reason to interpret the reactor's feelings as forced, disingenuous, or anything similar. What I did see is the following: someone who makes connections and finds meaning in art being hit hard by something he empathized with, regardless of what the artist's precise intent may have been, which is something I personally consider to be intelligent behavior... and then I saw someone belittle that. Belittling someone for finding meaning in art and feeling emotion about doing so, in my opinion, is a clear mark of not actually being intelligent in a way that matters. Therefore, I see you as less intelligent than the reactor you insulted, and I feel no need to be silent about that. You will almost certainly disagree with how I see this situation and everyone involved in it, and I'm perfectly fine with that, as I never expected anything more from you in the first place.
I think that's all I really have to say. I doubt I'll be responding again - this has been an amount of effort that I consider worthwhile, but engaging further is unlikely to result in useful statements on either side. My thoughts are now preserved here as publicly as yours are, and I'm entirely satisfied with that.
That'll be all from me. Over and out.

"Come and watch the skinny kid with a steadily declining mental health and laugh as he attempts to give you what he cannot give himself."
that tears me up for sure, but the screams at the end broke me every time. he was having a melt down right there, full panic atack. i´m really happy he´s back and really hope he´s better.

Awesome breakdown man, you got a new subscriber out of it. Bo’s a special kind of artist and there’s no bad way to go about jumping down his Rabbit hole.
A couple other commenters recommended “All Eyes on Me” and I gotta agree with them. That song is in many ways a thematic continuation of this one and he won a fuckin grammy for it.
Past that…shit the list could go on for a while lol.

Yeah. To my understanding, after this exact performance, he had something of a breakdown. Cut to five years later, for the the end of that story, and check out "All eyes on me", from "Inside"; Basically, his Covid/Quarantine special, written, filmed, performed, and produced by him, in his guesthouse.

Great reaction to Bo's video! It's probably the best one yet! Thank you for keeping it real.
A video to watch next could be "Art is Dead". I also agree with most of the commentators, "All Eyes on Me" is a really good one to watch especially after this video but then watch the entire Inside special on Netflix and react to each song. The special in its entirety is the best way to watch it as opposed to one song at a time. It's a masterpiece of depression over time. I've subscribed to your channel. Keep up the good work.

2:30 live auto tune is actually not that easy to use because you still have to hold the note in between a certain range or it jumps from one note to the next all the time. holding a note with autotune for a few seconds means that you held that note even without it. the only difference is that yours doesn't have to be 100% on pitch and it can't have a strong vibrato because that would make the note jumpy too.
what many people confuse and call autotune is actually tuning in the post processing that is done by hand with some helping algorithm that do the hard work in the background, but the music producer/magician still has to go through all the notes and set the note he wants and correct errors or sound glitches that can appear when you shift around or smooth the sound wave.

Your line, of "We need people in the world like this," makes we want to burst into tears. And, yet, it's so hard to be here....a genius and a wounded healer.....I hope he stays here with us, too! When you watch this again (bc of course you will lol) pay attention to the lighting as well. There are levels and meaning to that as well which show his genius as well. The light shining behind him hiding his face during performing showing (I’m just a performer) and the light on his face and everything else blacked out when he is doing his monologue. I know there are extra levels and I read someone’s comment before about it that really dove into it. If anyone has more please share. Great reaction, I loved it

  • @kyu2o337

I've read that the passive aggressive tone of "I hope you're happy" was kind of unique to one performance when recording the special, and the editor chose that one over the more genuine delivery. Bravo for that, because the double and opposing meaning of that line really is brilliant and fits perfectly with the message of the song...I want to make you happy but I'm giving up part of myself to do it.

Let's give the lighting designer some love too. It was a phenomenally basic design that did everything it needed to do.
I'm a lighting designer by trade. When I was going to school for design, my set design instructor said, "We set designers have a god complex. We get to create the world the actors live in."
I raised my hand and said, "Yeah but we lighting designers get to tell them how they feel about it."
I think this is a perfect example of that. The lighting designer brings the ambiance and notice when the crowd response. It always corresponds to the lighting.
