That "I hope you're happy" with that unspoken "cause I'm not" always hits me hard
I think Bo confirmed it had a double meaning of "i hope you're happy with what you did to me." (Or something like that)

That’s an interesting take, I think I always took it as “I hope I could make you happy” like an insecurity rather than a bitterness. I think I linked it back to the part where he says he wants to give people the night they deserve
@@mikeyland6995 no I don't think he's bitter per say (though maybe a bit when he talks about not being able to say what he wants without then caring) bit more so he does feel they deserve it but he can't understand why he isn't also able to be happy, like more why them and not also me instead of why not me instead of them
@mikeyland6995 He said for years that he doesn't wish any kid to get famous, since he got there (and his friends with similar problems) they usually aren't happy. With eyes always on them they cannot be fully themselves but have to have a mask and hide their life away. If he found a partner and kissed them TMZ would've posted a picture, with the question "Who is that person"? How did they fall in love the rest of the article would follow a similar formula to those "questions" that interest only psycho fans. And that's something he doesn't think any kids should go through like he did. But that doesn't mean there's a one and only correct interpretation of that part. Not until he clearly says it himself. Since 2015 he has been talking about it, it very much could be that "bitter" interpretation. But he is for sure not "bitter" towards the audience but social media, capitalism, and most importantly fame, precisely how it can destroy lives. The often omitted fact is being a famous person, you statistically won't be happy, nor rich AND the icing of the cake - you can't even s*** in peace.
Interestingly, you can observe in real-time what Bo was talking about, and how right he was by looking at the younger generations such as Gen Z (born 2005+) and Gen Alpha. Gen Z "famous" people are experiencing everything firsthand and we can now watch their lives 24/7 as they record/stream everything. It's insane that over 70% of kids want to become UA-camrs/streamers or influencers. While wanting to be a UA-camr or a streamer (unless it's stake [sorry I meant kick], it's the same but it's the same)/rumble steamer LMAO) is not necessarily bad, being famous just for the sake of being famous can end badly, as we've seen millennials and Gen Z fall into the abyss after getting involved in dramas.
This song was Bo's goodbye. He cried for hours after performing it, and actually fought a panic attack onstage while performing it.
He quit performing for 5 years and worked on his mental health before creating "Inside".
I interpret the Pringles can as the mold he felt he had to fit to be a success in comedy, and the bursting burrito as a representation of the emotional repercussions of trying to fit that mold.
It's been said that he gave an interview on this -- I haven't seen it -- where he said the burrito thing was an analogy for his fame. He got big, he got fame, and it got so much messier than he expected, and he wouldn't have wanted half of it if he'd known what a mess it'd make.
@@Lurkily_Esh Actually, Bo apparently said in an interview that the analogies/metaphors weren't on purpose, after getting asked about the theories since so many people interpreted the Pringles part and burrito part as what you described.

It's insane how this story gets worse everytime someone tells it.
There's nothing to interpret. He's had to say multiple times none of it meant anything deeper. He just stopped doing standup. He immediately went into directing and acting, which isn't exactly a mental vacation. You people need to quit trading in misery. You don't know him.

I know it would be difficult to cover on the channel but his project called Inside is very relevant to the topic of mental health. It's a difficult to watch special about his battle with mental health during the pandemic. It received a ton of awards and it's filmed, written, directed and performed entirely by him in a tiny room over many weeks.

Tbh if you want to get the story of bo you need to start with his old UA-cam and work through each special in order including his show zach stone is gonna be famous.. He isn't hiding anything the whole time and you slowly watch a hopefull kid get famous and reach his dreams only to realize he's sold his soul along the way and finally with inside shows you how empty his world has really become. After make happy I found myself always typing his name on Google to make sure nothing had happened. The man has some demons

The line about "as he attempts to give you what he cannot give himself" hit real hard. Amazing lyrics. Comedy but with real shit thrown in there. Had me choking up
i feel like most people can relate to that a lot of the times when it comes to those around us. we put on that performance so to speak, we may not be on stage but its real easy to be there for everyone else almost at the expense of ourselves.

Gives me the same goosebumps as the "We think- We know- You" from the end of his previous tour What. Had that album on repeat for months last year (and a bit of this year lol)
I wanted to let you know that that final scream before he says "goodnight I hope your happy" was actually real, and he was in the middle of a panic attack on stage. these panic attacks were a big part as to why he stopped doing comedy/specials for a while, and when you hear him talk about the panic attacks that is what he is referring too.

I’m very curious about this story, I keep seeing a lot of things in these comments about Bo saying he was going through a panic attack and was a mess afterwards, but he left the stage for about 1-2 mins, came out and asked us to be still to get some panning footage of the front row/audience with the lights on, then invited us to sing A Song from the Perspective of God with him. I’m wondering if the story is about the song during a different performance that wasn’t the one recorded for the special? If not, it’s insane how he was holding that all together but I still wouldn’t be surprised if he’s gone through it before and kept performing.

@@Kasia3127 there were two performances that day, and the special is a combination of both of them. The first show was the one where he got into difficulty because of his anxiety, then later that day he did the show again. That's real strength. I'm in awe.
For me, when he goes back into the Chipotle stuff, it feels heartbreaking. Because he's just told us how not okay he is and that he just has to keep performing through it, doing something that, we can conclude based on how he was talking about things, is actually damaging his mental health more or at least acting as a mask. We know that he has all of these dark feelings underneath the silliness now and it just- the crowd applauding, to me, feels a little tone deaf at that point, you know? Like, damn. This is exactly what he's talking about. (I guess what else are you supposed to do, stay awkwardly quiet? But yeah, intense.)
Agreed, it's almost frustrating watching the audiences of his performances cheering and laughing along to him pouring his heart out and often being visibly uncomfortable while doing it.

You're absolutely right and the first I've seen comment on it. Him going back to the Chipotle stuff is, as he says, "doing his job". And you could probably say it's an allegory for his career. Despite everything that he's going through and that he told the audience that he's going through, hidden in things that are "funny and rhyme", he still went out and performed on stage in front of thousands of people. I don't know him on a personal level so it's hard to say I care about his struggles but I do sympathise with him. But I think a lot of the audience aren't there to do that. Realistically, a lot of people bought tickets to see his show just to have a laugh. And Bo is self-aware enough to understand this. So he does the whole "say what he thinks and not care what we think about it" but also "does his job"
Bo is the only person who can have a comedy show and make me balling with tears...not tears of joy, mind you. This guy is a national treasure
Patton Oswald has a comedy special where he also talks about his wife who passed like a year before. It's a very sad part to the show but that's part of life too.
I really liked what you said after the reaction. One of the themes that becomes increasingly prevalent in Bo Burnham’s career is that neither he nor any entertainer can make a person happy. He responds with hostility towards crowd members yelling “I love you!”. “No you don’t!”.
I’d like to give you a quote that is a bit unrelated, but which I think will increase your interest in Bo:
Bo Burnham speaking to the audience in his last special before quitting for 5 years:
“They say it's the 'me' generation. It's not. The arrogance is taught, or it was cultivated. It's self-conscious. That's what it is. It's conscious of self. Social media - it's just the market's answer to a generation that demanded to perform, so the market said, here - perform. Perform everything to each other, all the time, for no reason. It's prison - it's horrific. It's performer and audience melded together. What do we want more than to lie in our bed at the end of the day and just watch our life as a satisfied audience member. I know very little about anything. But what I do know is that if you can live your life without an audience, you should do it.”
The burrito story is just so fascinating to listen to if you put it side by side to his own personal journey, starting so young, doing so much like TV shows, music, comedy, touring, guest appearances it was all too much and he just wishes somebody approached him and said "Hey man, you might be hitting 'maximum burrito' pull it back a bit for your sake."
So there is one last song before he walks out...this was the last performance before he left for 5 years and came back with Inside
The last song was also filmed in the same room of his house that he filmed Inside.

That’s just Bo Burnham. He makes you laugh with some of the most outrageous jokes and when you least expect it he punches you in the head with the deepest, most thought provoking ideas. He’s a genius.
Bo says something really fascinating in interview, and that's actually something that is an essential part of his work. He said something like "I don't know why people believe that when I become more serious, it's the real me". And he adds that both funny bits and more serious ones are as much of himself as the other. And I must admit that I thought those serious bits were "the actual him" when I dicovered him. However, at the beginning of What! or Make Happy (I can't remember which one), he starts by knocking a watter bottle over, supposedly by accident and then a song starts and says "He meant to knock the water over, yeah yeah yeah! Art is a lie, nothing is real!" And although in this case it is just a joke, he has actually always been questionning the place of art, its nature and everything. That's when I understood how his quote from above was actually in his shows and not just a sentence he said to wash himaself away from a question he didn't like.
Now that this is said, we know that he actually had panick attacks, and that parts of what he says here come from his true self. However it doesn't mean that the rest is less of himself or that the serious bits are not as staged and exagerated as the rest. I personnally think that it's what makes Bo such a great artist. That and his capacity to make me cry and laugh inside of the same song (je managed that twice in that funny feeling and in the chicken).
This was a great reaction thank you, I cry when I see his anxiety peak during that last scream, you can see his hands shaking.
The more you watch this the more it means.
For instance, I think the pringles can and chipotle burrito are metaphors for reaching out and forcing yourself to fit where you ultimately feel you don’t, and then asking for too much and being overwhelmed with how much you’re given in return and regretting asking for it all in the first place
This is common nonsense regarding the song.
The whole point is that they are non issues, that you can talk about with people. unlike serious issues. You go into many work places and start bitching about not getting your hand down a pringle tube and load of people will chime in, often enthusiastically; Talk about something that actually has meaning like ones one depression & anxiety, and people back off or even become hostile to it, so you stfu, and continue to talk about the inane, and non consequential.
That's exactly what it's meant to mean.

It's not even coincidental that these MIGHT have been what he was talking about, he genuinely uses brilliant music theory in the writing of the music to relate the verses together. He uses the same melody for "wouldn't have gotten the lettuce if I knew it wouldn't fit" and "I don't think that I can handle this right now" and then he says "you can tell them anything if you just make it funny" and "If they still don't understand you then you run it one more time" going back to talking about how he can't handle it using the melody and chord progressions he used for the burrito drawing direct comparisons between not being able to fit everything into his burrito (essentially struggling with everything life is throwing at him) and singing about how he can't handle it. Bo is notoriously shy and humble about his song writing there is genuinely no way he didn't intentionally use the burrito as a metaphor.

This is the parasocial "I know this person" type thinking that Bo has actively spoken out about. You don't know him, it's best to just take his word. Just because he's a smart dude doesn't mean everything he does is intentional.
Something to notice, and something about artists like Bo: it’s always deeper. The Chipotle thing isn’t just him complaining about burritos. It’s an analogy for the trappings of fame, trying to have and do it all, only to have nobody tell you that it won’t all fit and destroy the appeal of the whole thing in the first place. His desire to make everyone happy and do it all broke him, and he knew it.
pretty sure bo has said that he didn't actually write them as analogies, but he liked people's interpretations. or something like that

The lighting he uses is so peptic too. When he’s being personal you can see his face. But when he just shuts up and starts the music again, he is a silhouette, a shadow of himself on stage for us.
The chipotle/pringles references are about how he feels as though he had too much crammed in his life. He expressed it by saying “if they don’t understand you run it back one more time” before reciting it all again.
He has openly said that this wasn't intentional. Why are people pretending this is the intended messaging.

The second time he runs the Chipotle hook - after getting so deep about his anxieties on performance - gets me emotional every time. Like it's intentionally not as funny now, and I lowkey feel bad for laughing the first time.

Awesome reaction!! You’ve gotta continue your dive down the Bo Burnham rabbit hole!!! There’s so much to see and feel. This song was his very last performance before walking away from performing. He was fighting a panic attack during it and scared his crew at the end with that final yell.
The thing about Bo that you’ll find is that he’s really, really good at expressing things that are difficult to express. He’s like a magnet for ppl with mental health struggles lol. He can put a face on the monster in a way that’s extremely cathartic.
Any track of his will be a treat but I’d love to see your take on his song

My therapist has used it in the past during sessions as both an example of transactional analysis, and as a visualization of the internal drama that happens when someone with anxiety or depression is symptomatic.

So I hope this comment doesn't come across the wrong way, because I am a fan -- But I was really looking forward to this reaction. Honestly, your reaction was basically the expected reaction that he was describing on his "rant". When I saw this for the first time I teared up, had chills, and it makes me a little sad when people are nodding their heads 'enjoying' the content when this act was really him spilling out how he was feeling in that moment. "I don't think that I can handle this right now." He's said in interviews that was literal, in that exact moment, he was experiencing the overwhelming stress of everything, a panic attack, and that he literally couldn't handle everything in that exact moment. When he drops his mic and says, "I hope you are happy." He's said that wasn't sincere, but a tone of, "I hope you fu**in happy".
I hope once you get the chance to go back through a lot of his earlier stuff (not necessarily his youtube days, but once he became 'famous') that you re-evaluate some of these videos he does later, as you will see them from a very different perspective. Bo can somehow look his audience directly in their face, make fun of them and tell them everything that is wrong with them, and be endearing. The Pringles/Chipotle portion of the rant overshadows everything else because he, "made it funny, made it rhyme." He straight up told his audience they did not understand him, told him how they weren't understanding him, brings it full circle (which you became excited again, praising him) just like the audience starts cheering and applauding as soon as he goes back into nonsense, which just proves the point that most people missed.
As others have pointed out, this was his breaking point. This was his last performance before his 5 year hiatus that he was talking about on "All Eyes On Me". I understand that with only 3 reactions to Bo on your channel, and going backwards, you don't have a full understanding of his journey, but I hope you stick with it. I hope just the sheer amount of views you are receiving on his videos that are amongst your highest view counts every help prove you have an audience for this. Again, I hope none of this comes across as negative, and it's very possible it's simply my own perspective that is wrong, but I can't tell by the reactions on whether you are 'getting' Bo yet, or connecting with his fanbase that subscribes to you.
Yes! I mean, I wouldn't cheer for something like that. It felt too raw, too serious. "I'm feeling like shit but I'll go back to the silly thing because you don't care" WHY WOULD SOMEONE CHEER FOR THAT. It's just a confirmation that nobody understands and nobody cares. It must have been devastating for him
I agree with you here. I felt the same way.. That he was 'reacting' the way he right his viewers expected. I kinda thought he'd be one that really got it, but it feels like a miss to me.. I hope he watched it again just for himself, without recording it.
Thank you.. Exactly how I felt. First time I saw this I teared up and do everytime since then, and I'm normally not that kind of guy tearing up for acts on stage or tragedies of the famous strangers I've never met. But this performance is so raw, so emotional. I saw this reaction and was really curious about a proper analysis of it but wow... I'm sorry but the whole psychological point of this performance was missed here. I saw other more entertainey reaction channels who nearly broke down reacting to this and here it's all smiley and great.
The crazy thing is that this show is called Make Happy. He wants to make not only the people happy, but himself. The very last song of this show is called "are you happy?" Which is essentially a song about bo giving the listener a chance to make a review, but before he leaves, he wants to know if he made you happy. Love bo Burnham
As much as you enjoy Bo's work, I'd suggest you give his specials a front-to-back listen. You could potentially chop 'em up into reaction segments for the channel, but I think its worth it.
Did u miss the metaphors? To me, a Pringle cam is a metaphor for the “box” that we are expected to fit inside and he doesn’t fit the mold. And as for the burrito, there are so many choices in life that we make and then only later do we realize that they don’t “fit” and then we have a mess. I’m surprised you missed that since this is a mental health channel 🤔
There is something really surreal about seeing a dude performing a rendition of his literal mental breakdown that lasted 5 years, pouring his soul out - and the psychotherapist's "reaction" is smiling and dancing and noting how is cool he went right back to the chipotle part

At the end, the Chipotle stuff isn't about lettuce or cheese.. it's fame. He wouldn't have started UA-cam, or touring, or any of it if he knew it "wouldn't fit" the tortilla bursting with lettuce, cheese, chicken, etc. is his life bursting with all the stuff he thought he wanted, fame, money, fans, etc.

The burrito is clearly a metaphor for his life. After gaining fame and fortune, his life just started getting stuffed with more and more things... most of which really didn't fit. He kept adding more and more since he was now able to, but nobody really warned him of the consequences of his choices, or that it would get this bad.. and he can't handle it. At least that's what I think is the real meaning behind something that otherwise has little to no sense or relevance.
A lot of people have said this but Bo confirmed in an interview a few years ago that it's literally just about a burrito 😂

Definitely give Bo’s “We Think We Know You” a watch! It would be a little out of order from what you’ve seen, and was done a couple years before this. The opening of it is spoken word, then Bo shows off his massive talent across the second half. All while being a glorious metaphor for coping with mental health struggles. Give it a watch
I'll echo a comment I saw on another reaction to this: Bo is the only artist so far to ever make me feel guilty for being a fan.
im not overly familiar with bo but uve seen this performance before and read that whole last part was him having a panic attack on stage wich lead to him taking a long hiatus from performing.

6 years ago, this video came out. 6 years ago he was as old as I am today. Today, i revisited this song by chance, dumb luck, by clicking through your video reactions. And all of a sudden, the anxiety, the fear, the feeling of wanting to push it down and keep going, all of it, feels so much more real and different than when I listened to it 6 years ago.

The special this was a part of came out when I was at my lowest in my own mental health and the song directly after this one "Are You Happy?" emotionally wrecked me on several levels.
Can you imagine being on that stage having a massive panic attack the entire time an people laughing at you because that's what your job is?

Things people tend to miss. Everything he says in all his songs have a double meaning. The Pringles can is a metaphor for how you can't reach things in life you want and when you do get them they come so fast you can take it all at once. The burrito is talking about how the people guiding him should have stopped him and told him he was taking on too much. There is nothing funny in this song. It was a cry for help and it perfectly expressed what he said. You can tell them anything as long as you make it funny and rhyme.

This video of your reaction to Bo's performance of "Can't Handle This" peaked my interest for 2 reasons. 1 this performance was also my first introduction to Bo, and it's still my favorite as I GOT IT the very first time I saw it, I literally cried the first time I watched it, and the 2nd reason was I thought since the title of your video was "PSYCHOTHERAPIST REACTS to Bo Burnham-" I was thinking maybe you would "get it" and pick it apart more or see it better for what it is. The whole song is him talking about his life, he got into UA-cam making videos when he was like 11 and wanted to become famous. And He did become famous, HUGE, he worked hard to be a star, but found that fame wasn't all it was cracked up to be, and no matter how famous he was how much money he made how many likes or fans etc, he was still unhappy, unwell, and getting worse but now everybody is looking and watching etc. "Can't Handle This" came out when he was like 20 I think, and I want to point out the biggest things you missed. Like forget Kanye, listen again and think ok, here is a kid talking about his life and how nothing FITS! His hand doesn't fit in the pringle can, no matter how hard he tries, and he ends up with crumbs all over his face, he wanted to be famous, to be rich, to be a star, like he ordered a burrito and kept filling it with more and more and more things and nobody tried to stop him out warn him like "hey kid, maybe slow down a little, maybe you're not ready for this, maybe you should be a kid first then be famous when you're grown up or something... Anyway, " Can't Handle This" is something I relate to in my core. I'm not famous, but just like Bo, my everyday life is a performance. I hide my pain and fear and struggles behind a big smile and I am a comedian at work, I bring everybody up I make everybody laugh, I can usually succeed in turning any random strangers frown upside down in the course of 60 second transaction. It's a "gift", an art, and a curse. I always feel like I'm on the brink of falling apart, but no one around me has any idea. I change the words to songs on the radio all the time and people will always laugh along when they catch on but they never really catch on, especially when I'm actually opening up about myself or something because I do it EXACTLY like Bo Burnham does. I've never known or seen anyone else manipulate language in this way before, I just don't make videos or perform on a stage (anymore lol). Anyway, I felt a need to express to you, a PSYCHOTHERAPIST, and just say to look deeper, listen better, i dunno, I guess I thought psychotherapists were like mental health detectives masters of reading between the lines, seeing through the masks some of us have worn so long and crafted so beautifully we still can't really be seen or heard.
there's an interview somewhere where he talks about the meaning behind the jokes and it makes the song way darker, the pringle can is success, a the burrito is the obligations he has taken on when becoming famous, talking about his anxiety and stress of being in front of a crowd
Right after this song in the Netflix special there's a song called "Are you happy?" It's not posted officially anywhere on youtube or spotify, but if there's a way for you to see that (doesn't even have to be on screen tbh), that would be amazing. Such a great song
Review Bo's "That Funny Feeling." The track is on Inside, but was not part of the recorded special. His insight into his mental health struggles is astounding. Phoebe Bridgers did a version of the song, as well. She's a good one to review, especially "Motion Sickness."

What always hits me is the entire time he is being genuine, the crowd is dead silent. Its only after he says he's going to 'shut up and do his job' that the crowd has any reaction.
This is just my opinion:
With bo everything is a metaphor.
Pringle can: you want something but it's always just out of reach and when you finally get it you get so showered with it that it's meaningless
Burrito: again wanting it all and having people that will give it to you if you want it but never having learned moderation he makes the "burrito" so big there's no way he can manage it all without it getting messy. The burrito expert is his manager, able to get him whatever he wants but never telling him no even know he KNOWS how destructive adding all the "toppings" can be. I also think he's thinking a little deeper than his own life here. He doesn't have children but I believe this whole section could also be about the balance between career and home life. All the things he "wouldn't have got" if he knew they wouldn't fit are things like shows on birthdays. Times when he just keeps adding things on while not thinking about what else is already planned for that day or taking anyone else into consideration.
But the main meaning underneath it all and is repeated multiple time throughout his specials. HE GOT EVERYTHING HE EVER WANTED AND HE STILL ISNT HAPPY. Sounds simple but it's so profound when you really think about it. We all think money, fame, friends, and stuff will make us happy but those that "have it all" are just as miserable.
The way he ends it is always so haunting to me. It's like he's told you exactly how fucked up he is now and just looks straight into the camera and says "I hope you're happy". But also that he kinda does genuinely hope you're happy so it's not all for nothing as he has already stated his intent was for you to be happy since he can not.

i saw Bo Burnham for the first time when I was 18 in 2007, right before he started that show. So good.
One of the most impressive things other than the lyrics, he's actually adjusting the auto tune himself in real time. Its not done by a sound engineer. Im sure he has one for the background tracks. Its really impressive in my opinion.

Idk if you caught this but his entire song, especially the burrito thing, was a metaphor. And him saying “you can say anything if you make it funny make it rhyme” because people don’t pay attention to his deeper meaning while they’re distracted by the entertaining show.

The Pringles can is paralleled and echoed when he says “I don’t think that I can handle this right now” … he says “can”, like a Pringles can, he says he can’t “handle” this because there’s no handle on a Pringles can.
The Chipotle burrito is paralleled and echoed when he said “They don’t even know the half of it” because he says he wouldn’t have gotten “half” this sh*t if he knew it wouldn’t fit in the burrito.
"I attempt to give you what I cannot give myself" breaks me everytime I hear it.
I'm not a Kanye fan but I have to say, he's probably the single highest profile example of someone struggling with bipolar disorder in an extremely public way (probably too public, but that's bipolar for you - when someone is at their most manic it's really hard to realize what you're doing might be a bad idea). He doesn't get much sympathy for that, and when he's at his worst is when he's most likely to be made the butt of the worst jokes. Regardless of how little I like the guy or his work or his viewpoints, I have known other people who fought that battle without a spotlight on them and lost. I wouldn't wish that fight on anybody.
I went on the Yeezus tour and it was a hell of a show. The song where he talks about ranting was called “Runaway” I could go on about how great the show was cause it was honestly the best live show I’ve ever seen. But if you UA-cam search “Runaway Yeezus Tour” you could get a glimpse of the show if you’re interested.

I don't know if anyone mentioned but Bo had a panic attack towards the end of this when he started shouting.
"...Laughs as he attempts to give you what he cannot give himself" - it reminds me of a story I heard about Robin Williams. He was walking off stage after crushing it (of course) and one of the other performers basically told him that he killed it and Robin turned to him and said (paraphrasing here), "Isn't it amazing that we can make so many people happy and we can't do that for ourselves."
People see the fame and money and think that is happiness. If you are empty going in, you are going to be empty on the other side of it too.
I'd also like to add that you can tell he lost himself during this performance - he fell into the music to save him from truly and completely plummeting before he just had to leave.

the whole song is a metaphor for trying to please others while trying to do what you need for yourself and struggling to keep others happy while also maintaining your own mental health. its silly on the surface, but its profound when you dig a little deeper.
