    in the suicide speech, he's seen saying 'don't kill yourself' while hisself from the future sits, depressed and tired looking like he hasn't slept in weeks, obviously not paying attention or listening to his own message. it's funny how we can give advice but in our lowest moments, we don't listen to even ourselves. being in that depression hole is no joke. he's talking to himself but when he needs it most, he can't bring himself to care.

    • @orion9966
      @orion9966 2 роки тому +61

      I always thought that he was looking at his phone, and what's playing on his shirt is what he's seeing on the phone. Therefore making Phone Bo play the role of some health guru UA-cam video disingenuously telling depressed people what he thinks they should do. It looks like real Bo realizes this insincerity and naturally seems disinterested. Then, he starts to take his advice at face level, and re-contextualize it under his own terms of thinking. Afterwards starting to realize how inadvertently right the "other" guy is.

    • @tabathaarria9558
      @tabathaarria9558 2 роки тому +43

      also his anti-suicide message is literally being projected on himself. he could've just played that message by itself, and we still would get that he's not advocating for suicide. but no, he had to add another layer to it. honestly bo is a visual genius

    • @violette889
      @violette889 2 роки тому +7

      yes, i totally agree with you. i also thought that the message where he tells us to not k!ll ourselves and everything almost feels as if he's telling himself exactly that :( it really is the advice we give to others, we can't give to ourselves..

    • @bekoslides7889
      @bekoslides7889 2 роки тому +10

      Not necessarily. The thing I'll always say (and he shows perfectly) is that you should NEVER say to someone who has depressive and suicidal thoughts that you shouldnt die because of someone or something. It is literally pointless and he shows it in the show, as you argumented too

    • @orion9966
      @orion9966 2 роки тому +7

      @@bekoslides7889 Right. The notion that life and its meaning can be dumbed down to material possession or singular relationships is stupid, and I whole heartedly agree with you. When I say "health gurus", I mean it in a more derogatory way, criticizing UA-cam channels that give unsolicited, bad, unqualified advice to people actually struggling with mental illness.
      What I'm referring to is the ability to contextualize this information. So instead of listening to an idiot who doesn't know what he's talking about, you instead start to listen to yourself saying the same words. Now, instead of thinking to himself "You should get better because it's selfish not to, and someone probably cares about you." we instead start to get a more personalized "You know this special is the only thing keeping you going, and maybe you shouldn't be so quick to ridicule the things that bring you the already little hope and passion that you have."

    “Is he mocking people for being to open on social media or is he showing they are real people?”
    In my opinion, both. He says at one point that people should just shut the eff up which is why I think it’s kind of playing into that, but the way he widens the frame makes me think that it’s also about connection and empathy.

      i also think it's both. in wwi there were shots of cultural references like the buddha, bo wearing the native headband, etc. it looks like he was mocking these white women for being culturally inappropriate(?) but also then again the ratio widening and reminding us that these are people with depth and emotions. he is a genius.

      I think the aspect ratio is the clue. When he sings of all these cliché things the aspect ratio is that of a portrait picture on Instagram. When he is singing about the dead mom, it widens to signal that it isn't through the lens of social media. It's real.

    He may have been mentally in that room for a long time. But he chose when to be there physically.

      Yup!
      That said, it's clear portions of it are acted from personal experience. His breakdown near the end, where he's trying to say he's been working on it for a whole year, but keeps stopping? That's male anxiety and self-loathing displayed to a degree of accuracy I haven't seen properly portrayed before. Uncertain how to ask for help, so you display your extreme discomfort/frustration physically, while trying to struggle on like everything's fine.
      I remember doing exactly the same thing, right down to smacking my knee. Probably just like Bo, I was unsure if my physical behaviour was me intentional over-acting as a wordless cry for help, or if I was just telling myself that to avoid confronting a loss of control.
      Strangest part was, there wasn't anyone around at the times when it happened. I was "acting" only for myself.

    I think it is fair to say, that what Robert (Bo) Burnham did with this special, is to give a deeply intimate perspective of the Millenial Zeitgeist and found the best form of art to describe mental illness and the shared experience of the information age. He singlehandedly did that, in(spite of) "times like this". I am glad we have people like him. Or not even that. I am glad, that I have him.

    “Problematic” is honestly a really interesting song from this special to me - Bo Burnham’s never gotten serious heat or backlash for his “edgier” humor or choices in the past, as far as I’m aware, but he hasn’t *had* to be called out for it. He’s been critical of himself as a nice guy who’s clever and willing to be irreverent, but also doesn’t want to be insensitive, and looks back as we all do on weird things he did as a kid and winces while knowing he can’t realistically distance himself from it that much. It’s interesting hearing a comedian reflect on that kind of thing in their material, entirely on their own terms.

      My first go around I didn't really give it much thought, but after seeing the ending, my second go around was different
      We know this lockdown was tremendously stressful on Bo, and it felt like his strong opposition to suicide had weakened substantially, like if he were to say those words in his current state(within the video), they would be empty.
      When old Bo mentions his hypothetical suicide, we see current Bo's attention being grabbed.
      I think Bo was far closer to suicide(maybe not suicidal, but absolutely closer), and wanted to show the sharp contrast between his mental states
      I'm guessing he put this scene in here because he was watching back that initial suicide prevention video and he felt the stark contrast. He felt his dispassion for the beginning, and felt his interest spike at the mention of possible suicide. I'm guessing he saw this reaction and was so startled by it, and found it so important, that he decided it must be included.
      But that's just a theory

    something ive havent heard anyone else talk about, i feel like the entire special uses the pandemic as a parallel to his five year break instead of being about the actual pandemic. he’s stuck inside because he had to take a break for his mental health and he’s working to get better (working on the special) and wants to get better but the closer he comes to being ready to get back on stage the more panic he feels about it (not wanting to finish the special) and is looking for a reason not to return (“went out to look for a reason to hide again”). in All Eyes On Me he opens up about why he left in the first place and then “the funniest thing happened” and he found his reason to hide again in the pandemic

    Loved watching someone take in the whole special in its entirety. You miss so much context just hearing the songs isolated and by themselves. Add in all the callbacks that he makes throughout the special and everything ties together so perfectly. Awesome reaction. 👍🏼

    I've watched all your reaction videos to Inside today.....I love seeing your appreciation for it. I think this is a total masterpiece and has joined the world together in mass empathy and allowed people to look for deeper meaning. Our teenage children suffer with mental health issues and lockdown hit them hard but as a critical workers ourselves we worked all the way through Covid and I can honestly say I didn't really get their struggle until I watched Inside. Anyway.....off to Calgary with my daughter to watch it in the cinema tomorrow :-)

      Also, the ending song had the biggest impact for me, especially because I was following Bo Burnham since his "what" special, and with his 5 year hiatus, that voice in the end telling him: "Well, well, look who's inside again. Went out to look for a reason to hide again" hit me hard. At the time I honestly thought that after 5 years of getting better, this special pummeled his comedic spirit back into the ground, and I didn't doubt it. Working on something for more than a year without any feedback would be very discouraging for me.
      I loved your take on it though, sounds way more optimistic than mine

  • @llc358

    This special really was something incredible. Especially because honestly it feels like while he's talking about "inside" in the context of being stuck inside and in isolation because of the pandemic, it is ultimately a metaphor for his own mental illness, isolating himself and being stuck inside his own anxieties. He thought he was better and ready to emerge, and then he finds himself stuck right back where he was, and the realization that so many mentally ill people go through, that even when you get "better," it doesn't really fully go away and is always waiting for a chance to take you over again. You can see the progression over time of him getting more and more depressed to the point where his own "motivational" speech to not kill yourself doesn't reach him at all. And the final song just brings me to tears. "I promise to never go outside again" and "went out to look for a reason to hide again" almost like he is giving in to his mental illness and accepting that even when the pandemic is over and he can go outside, he will still always be stuck inside his head with his mental illness.

    I don't think you noticed the lightning to the "Welcome To The Internet" song in your original video (trying to remember) ... It starts out with stars that show how expansive the internet is.. Then it goes into the talking about the kids in the really slow part ... It goes to the purple/blue/pink mixed background for that part ... Then at the end you notice that the purple/blue/pink background is over the star galaxy background ...... The internet has won, not only in the song, but visually in the video ... O_O You're addicted

    Love this reaction, thanks for making it for the whole special :D one interpretation I had for the scene where he’s talking about not committing suicide- I think in that scene, his older self is watching it. And so his older self is in a really bad mental state and is watching his younger self say to not kill himself. Hopefully that makes sense.

    I think I'm in the minority when I say I thought that smile at the end was sinister. I saw that not as relief for him but more as his the personification of his depressive state joining the crowd almost laughing at Bo for trying to go back inside (btw i think him trying to go back inside might be the fear that Bo has of when everything DOES go back to normal he is going to want to "hide from the world" again) . I think this because the character of the depressive state can also be seen in the suicide note to us as it's being projected onto his shirt and when he's watching himself (like here in the ending) but when Bo was younger. Also for that last one it's the same camera angle as how the last scene of him smiling is. I honestly got the chills when he smiled at the end and the credits song didn't help because that's probably what Bo was telling himself everyday when filming the special. "It'll stop anyday now"

    I've watched a lot of reaction videos to Bo Burnham's Inside (many of which were just to specific songs from the special and they didn't actually watch the special in its entirety)... And although I think Brad might have missed/misinterpreted a few things (based on personal opinion), this reaction video is the most considered and thoughtful reaction video that I've seen about Bo Burham's masterpiece "Inside". I'm a fan now, you've got my sub.

    The bit when he kept trying to speak but failing before All Eyes On Me hit seriously hard. I don’t know what was going through his head, but this time last year I either didn’t expect to or didn’t plan to reach my 22nd birthday. I’d had a huge panic attack which triggered a dissociative disorder that lasted for 4 months. And when I tried to explain to myself that it was all ok and I’d get better, I’d keep stopping, laughing, swearing and crying every time I tried to speak. I’m better now, but I’ll never forget that feeling, and that little moment resonated with me for that reason

    I suggest you watch all of "Make Happy" (Which was his last special before this 5 years ago when he kind of lets everyone know that he doesn't think he can be in the spotlight much longer and the special where he started having panic attacks during performances which led him to quit even more) but at the end he walks outside and you see that he actually has a house and this room he recorded inside in is just kind of an outside studio. So he lived in a house with his girlfriend and pets and just came in here to record inside, most likely because it gave the illusion of being claustrophobic in a small room.
    Anyway, "Make Happy" and "what." are both really good specials, however make happy is my favorite one.
