Quick tip when looking for a core; if you are going through the pull-a-part, the car that looks clean and nice is NOT the one to get your mechanical parts from! If you can’t tell why it’s in the junkyard, it’s probably a bad engine or trans! However the car that is smashed, you can be pretty confident it drove to the scene of the accident! So while you should still consider any mechanical parts a core, especially on older stuff, odds are the one from the crashed car will need the least amount of work to get back into shape.

That is how I always did my junkyard shopping but like Uncle T said, consider everything a core. The reason I say this is because of the modern automotive invention(! DRUMROLL PLEASE!), The Auto Computer! I have seen dozens of automobiles, that with the correct electronic TOOLS and PARTS, they were still excellent automobiles. They ran great and looked VERY NICE!
Whether the owners did it or their mechanic ( Who WAS a TOP-NOTCH, Fix ANYTHING Mechanic from the 1970s-1980s) Gave the owner, the Deer in the Headlights LOOK from parts swapping very expensive and non-returnable electronic products. This great mechanic usually doesn't have the scanning tools or the knowledge of what any of it means.
Everyone has good intentions but your preacher will tell you (it applies to cars), the Road to Hell is paved with good intentions!
Buyer beware more than ever. Ya'll Take Care, John

There was a guy here on UA-cam from England, who posted a 17 part video or so showing you step-by-step how to take the 727 apart and rebuild it. I took my laptop out in the garage and used his videos to disassemble and reassemble/rebuild my transmission. It’s been every bit of 7 years ago, and that transmission is still going strong in my 72 340 Duster.

Bad Tree productions has a few 904 & 727 builds that they do for some of the cars they drive on the street & do some drag time at the strip . They had just done a 727 for the Death pumpkin that's using Cope transmission parts inside manual valve body & trans brake . They seemed to do a good job on showing everything in the rebuilds and checking clearances on stuff in steps and why they do this & even showed so of the home made tools to make things easier to do the tear down and rebuild process . So check them out because they are Mopar guys & some of the videos they do are hilarious at times picking on each other .

Ha haa, I decided to look for a 200-4R trans just yesterday, and found an ad, a used one $600, im like whoa that's high. So yup, parts are available, but not cheap. I'll stick to my 700R4 I got years ago and just buy a shorter driveshaft. But yeah, I'll take my chances rebuilding instead of ordering one.

I'm currently rebuilding a Push button A727, so far the experience has been great, a "built not bought" sort of build.
The build so far has been much improved from stock perameters.
So far i'm $1200 in parts, parts include:
    4 pinion front/rear planetary
Front clutch drum with 6 clutch settup
Rear clutch drum with a 5 clutch settup
    Thicker lug front pump gear
    2000 stall converter
    Trans-Go TF-2 Shift kit
    Lightened sun gear shell
Drilled/modified case to allow ATF to reach the sprag for lubrication, instead of getting lube by "splash"
    Blueprinted case.
Billet accumulator servo with no block rod.
    Forward/reverse billet servos.
(Billet servos are necessary at time as the modified valve body pressures tend to crack the stock servos)
The best part about this job is i know what i did in the rebuild.
And as Tony has said: you can point to a part of a car and say, "i did that myself"
    Best feeling in the world.

    • @peteloomis8456
      @peteloomis8456 9 місяців тому

Did you go with the rear bolt in sprag by chance and if so how difficult was it to install ?

    • @samhicks97
      @samhicks97 9 місяців тому +1

@@peteloomis8456 I didn't go with the bolt in sprag setup, just replaced the springs & rollers only.
I can't vouch for the bolt in sprag installment difficulty, but I don't like the idea of drilling more holes to accommodate new anchor points for the new sprag, just creates more areas where the case can get stress fractures/cracks to form.
One thing I did manage to learn was, the factory sprag outer race that is staked into the case very seldom shifts in their positions, they were really well staked, almost solid from the factory.
Disturbing the factory sprag race is asking for trouble, it hasn't moved for at least half a century, why disturb it's "tomb" now?
This A727 is going in a 1964 Dodge custom 880 behind a 361 big block,
      (viewable on my channel)
It's one of the last Chrysler forward look full-size cars.
So it's a cruiser, not a racer really. It's important to have that distinction.
If you are constantly neutral dropping the trans and beating it up, sure a bolt in sprag "might" help.
I say "might" because the full force of the engine will not be stopped by a bolt in sprag, might I recommend a billet front drum?
As the front drum is the part that is allowed to over speed when the sprag fails and explodes sending shrapnel through the floorboards.
Do watch John at CRT on the explanation of A727 explosions.
All I'm implying is a bolt in sprag is a good investment, but there are other critical parts that need to be upgraded in conjunction.
But as a dominoes effect, Putting power through some weak/strong components will always find a weak link in the drivetrain.

  • @indianaslim4971

Another benefit of learning to do it yourself is you might like it and even if you stick to one manufacturer you can make some side money as the local mopar guy, or gm, whatever. Once the word gets out people will be bringing not only work but you'll find yourself accumulating parts that can be used for future rebuilds.

When I needed a rebuild for my transmission, it so happened that a guy at work was getting his Chrysler transmission rebuilt at the time I needed one. He told me of an affordable shop that had a good reputation and a good price.
The shop owner and employees, a small shop, had heavy accents and I don't know where they were from. They were known for doing good work and affordably too. They were always going out of business and then starting up again at a new location. So, I got a rebuild in about 2010 for $1,000.00. Still working good today. What a rare deal.

Frustrating that something that mechanically works just fine and it gets a computer added to the mix.( 4l60, 47re, or the ford aod)
I have 4 4l60 trans that I have collected up in different states of disrepair. One with no 3/4 , one with 2nd or third gear only(also electrical connector falling into the trans pan), one that does absolutely nothing, and another that the guy just said was bad. Out of all 4 I hope I can make one that works, but all that computer jazz makes me question why I even like Chevy s10s

I've done a few transmissions myself. I can tell you that the 904 and 727 are far simpler than any of the other brands. Considerably less parts in there to keep track of where they go. Also a stock replacement 318 727 torque converter will give you some stall behind a more powerful engine. I've used one with a 400 and 440 big blocks and they held up ok. Not super high hp engines but not stock either. Far cheaper than an aftermarket one if you are counting pennies. May have to knock the balancer weight off if you are running a forged crank. I think you can still buy the weight kits and template to weld weights on as well.

The deposit is usually the price of the tool in it's new/used condition, but you get all that back when you bring the tool back; or don't bring it back and they don't care, you paid for it, it's yours. Tip, between the mostly same years you can mix a 999 with a 949 and a couple other parts from a 727. Max amount of power 500 horse almost 400 pounds of torque at 6200 rpm. I have mixed the 999 with earlier models as well. Extremely ridiculous second gear shift but can only take so much power and rpm’s before you blow the band or input shaft. With a custom input shaft and band that is hardened you can push it harder. Going into second my dusters front tires would come off the ground and without a torque box and a roll cage you will twist the frame 😂

I remember when I went through shop class I was well ahead of the average city kid, being I grew up on the farm. While they were learning to put together a lawn mower engine I was rebuilding engines and transmissions. I put together a TH350C with a street kit for $250 and the shop made money as well as me. It's been a long time since I looked at a transmission. Mr. Transmission is gone. Rebuild kits are $250, a junker is $500 and a rebuilt OEM TH350 is $2000. Holy shit... A hopped up TH 400 is $5000 now. WTF is going on? I guess I better get into the rebuild business...

I rebuild autos on the side, meaning two every week. I'll charge anywhere from 1100 to 1600 depending on the trans and if they want any goodies like a shift kit or valve body mods. I average two grand a week in profits after my overhead. Do the math, that's a hundred thousand a year for sitting on my ass and playing with a giant erector set. I have an autoimmune disorder and can't stand for long periods of time, so this is perfect for me. Like Uncle Tony said, rebuilding trannys is a real drag but it's quick money and the demand is huge. I'd love to get into selling cores and parts but I don't have the storage space.

@@Whats-It-To-Ya You can make $100k on the side and you haven't expanded your operation?? You need to raise your prices a little and hire some help for low-skill subtasks like cleaning up cores and such. Build a proper shop.

@6:00 those are classic mid south mud dauber pupa deposits in those trans cooler lines, not related to floods, or silt deposits.
Mud daubers will plug up any possible hole you can imagine that’s left exposed on a field car with their stinking larval deposits.
I still find it to be a welcome tradeoff to losing your entire vehicle to salt rot in the rust belt where I ran away from 20 years ago. 😀

The problems we're seeing in reman units are the same ones we will likely see using the parts to do it ourselves. We will save the labor but also might need to perform our own warranty work just the same.
We need decent parts like we had just 5 or 6 years ago. We complained then but it was 1 in 30 problems and it's 1 in 3 now it seems.

Buy a book on how to rebuild your transmission. Then watch videos. It's not as difficult as people rumor. diesel fuel makes a good cheaper than mineral spirits solvent. After you clean and de-bur each part wrap it in a masking type paper or news paper. I think there are less parts in a 3 speed auto than an engine. I was surprised how easy they were to rebuild. "NO FEAR"

Well stated Uncle Tony. I'm going to rebuild my first rv2 compressor for my 69 Roadrunner. I wanted a backup core and got lucky on Ebay. I spoke with the seller and he said the compressor turned over smoothly by hand, with no binding. The compressor came without the clutch/ pulley assembly, so he was turning it by the crank snout.
I tried it myself when I received it, and it turns as smooth as silk. You can hear it pumping as you do.
I feel a lot better about this project knowing that I have a good backup core. In my case, let's just call it insurance

This video is so timely. I about had a conniption fit when I went to price reman AOD for my '66 F100, plus the reviews of most of the reman companies were horrible and not worth the $3000 gamble.. So I am entertaining the idea of getting a core from a salvage yard and try myself, except most salvage yards want $350 to $500. It may be above my pay grade to tackle an auto tranny rebuild but the only way to learn is to try.

While I was building a 360 to swap into my v6 Dakota the stock trans died. I needed to upgrade the trans from 42re to 46re anyway to handle the power. I couldn’t find a core and the local trans shops were no help so I bought a “built” trans from a well known internet company, paid for upgrades to handle 500hp. It took 2 months to get and now installed its junk. Brings new meaning to the term “slush box” the warranty department is impossible to deal with and because I installed it myself basically voids any warranty. Even though I was a ASE/GM certified mechanic for many years. If you have the capability to do it yourself do it. At the end of the day YOU are really the only one you can count on!

Good stuff Tony. I built a 75 440 motorhome engine for my 86 Ramcharger, stock 360 was good but not enough, being 4x4 i needed the output shaft in the big block 727. Everything in the small block is the same as the insides of the big block case. Put in a new converter and the excellent but gone through valve body from the small one, plus the governor. 5,000+ miles, everything is great. Had to use a cable conversion for the carb/throttle body lever. The kit part for the carb was too short in terms of leverage, so I had to modify that longer to get equal movement on both ends, like a stock one has. Gotta watch those kits, every one I`ve seen on a Mopar/727 couldn`t be adjusted correctly because they make the carb bracket too short. Course Im` running a Thermoquad that is absolutely the best carb ever.

The thing I hate the most about the 47re is the overdrive tail shaft splines not lining up. That is some straight up bullsh!t to get them lined up again. The power wedge anchor is annoying if you dont keep up with band adjustment, it falls out. If you are adjusting the band, dont over torque it, the anchor will crack and fall out. Torqueflite is a perfect starting place if you want to learn about transmissions.
