This is kind of on the money. Watch the movie "The Game" from 1997 with Michael Douglas. He drove a black 740il in it. I'm a small business owner and the business I'm in involves somewhat of an esoteric group. It's a totally legitimate business and no illegal activity is implied. I worked for a competitor in the summer of 2000. He was just a gentle voice on the phone and I mainly took orders from his wife. She drove a Lexus RX. One of those nights when it was overcast in late August/early September when the Sun sets a bit earlier as fall approaches, I noticed a black 750iL slow down near the site where I was working and it really struck me as imposing! My cell phone rings and it was the guy I worked for. I walked on up and met him in person for the first time. He was a rather nice guy…but that car could haunt your dreams!
BMW never had V-12 badges on their cars during this period - I don't think ever. The starter motor in one scene was a V-12 turbine sound - very distinct to only 12s. No footage on youtube strangely - but I do have the film. It did not have cross-spoke wheels like the 740s had - they were chromed-out turbines. Chroming was big in CA from `87 on in films. The car was bedadged in the film.

Many people don't have the ability to work on their own cars. As a college student, the only two tools I own are a hammer and a hot glue gun. I live in an apartment, so I don't even have space to work on the car even if I did have the appropriate tools. Besides, BMW's are some of the most time-intensive cars to work on, especially for seemingly simple tasks. For example, my old E46 needed the heater core to be flushed. Because it was a BMW, the ENTIRE dashboard had to be removed just to gain access. I sold the car instead of getting it repaired.
wait hold on, did that guy go to a DEALER to get his stuff fixed? good god, tell him to do the work and source the parts himself, and go on the e38 forums, that car has been DISSECTED, just like the e46 and e39, and they know how to fix allllll its problems easily
My E38 circumstances are rather similar to the video, price wise. I paid $8100 for a 2000 740i Sport four years ago then put $19k into it. Well, $14k to be fair since I shouldn't count non-maintenance modding. I cannot speak to this guy's reasoning but in my case while I know there are great resources for DIY, I have no space to work on my car and honestly, I'd rather not deal with the hassle. Screw the "stealership" though, I take it to a good indy for maintenance.
Strahan740i bah, the 7 series forums could have given you pictorials to do everything on that car yourself for zero labor cost (the parts are expensive, but the labor usually kills ya) the succeeding generation 7-series had even more problems and people have totally dissected that thing to the point of reprogramming the ECUs for fun
Ryukachoo Yes, they do have great write ups, but that's irrelevant. As I said, not everyone has a place to do these things. I've no garage and no off street parking. I do not really want to do the timing chain guides along side the road heh,
If he had the money, I would think he'd get something newer... He's just throwing money at people cause he lacks know-how, tools, space and whatever other excuses people like to throw out. IMHO, paying some guy who gives two shits about your car a premium to work on said car for routine maintenance and even some not so routine issues is a waste of time and money. Almost nothing you do to your car will take more than a couple hours or cost you more than a few hundred dollars in parts and tools. Also, yes you can get more than the luxury found in this car (sans rear leg room, meh...) in a newer car under warranty for around 30k. There are optioned VAG cars out there, just have to look. 4 years or 50k miles (whichever comes first) for Audi warranties at least.
+Potato 3800 for car, tax, title, tags. 600 so far with fixing up. Needs about another 1500 total for chassis and cosmetics. She's in good shape. Had 98000 miles when I got her.
PLEASE keep these coming! They are hilarious, and a great stress reliever as well. Seriously, if you're pissed off at the day (aka every Monday in my case), watch one of these. Any one. Doesn't matter, they're all awesome! "La-la-la-la-la-la-still-going-straight!!"
actually it WILL go wrong, and often. All old BMW's need a ton of maintenance and frequent repair, especially models that are packed with electronics like the 5 and 7 series. They also tend to develop a lot of oil leaks and other issues. The cooling system is a particular weak spot for BMW's, especially the water pumps. That's why they're so cheap when they get to this age. You'd have to be out of your mind to buy one. Or have a lot of disposable income to spend on a car that is basically worthless.
Simon Coles Dude... please shut the hell up and learn how to use a wrench. You've clearly never owned any of these cars. It's a 10-20 year old luxury car, it will NOT be a car you can just neglect and drive, it will get even with you. I've had one of the 7 series and a 5 series. They're not terrible to work on. If your poor as hell, stay away. They're much more fun to own then the depreciated Kia Souls that Americans like to finance on a 6 year car note that's for sure. My 528i is at 202,000 miles and runs like a new car, not even a single rattle, seriously, pick up a wrench or stay the hell away so the big boys can play with them. That's experienced advice from someone who's dealt with these cars often.
Same body yes, but that was a 735i. They were not sold in the US, and rarely ever did someone actually order one with the optional manual tranny. Which was not available in the US. People swap them instead.
To me, this generation of 7 Series will always be the car Frank Martin drove in the first Transporter and James Bond drove in Tomorrow never Dies! In general, I also wanted to say thanks for the nostalgia in your videos. My Grandparents had a pewter 97 Lumina when I was a kid and grandma would pick me up from school in grade 5 and take me home for lunch, she'd buy me one of those big slices of pizza from Pizza Pizza or fish and chips. My uncle and his first wife had a early 90's red Fiesta and black mid 90's Geo Metro hatch. I also love your philosophy and nostalgia about remembering when you were young and the memories you hold onto and can appreciate now.
The great thing about these 740i's is that you can buy a good one for less than $4000 nowadays. Maintenance can be very cheap if you do it yourself. I had a 1995 750il that I bought for $1500, and aside from some electrical issues it was pretty solid mechanically. It had heated seats front and back, adjustable lumbar support on all seats, the rear seats reclined, and there was leather on literally every surface. Leather on the dash, leather on the door cards, leather on the center console, and leather on the armrests. These cars look amazing with style 37 wheels (aka M-Pars) while they look old and lame with the stock wheels.
I daily drove a 750il for a while, and those are far more complicated. My daily driver right now is a 2000 540i Touring which has the same engine as a 740il, and it's been great. If you maintain these cars properly they'll be quite reliable.
My father is looking at buying a 1997 740il for $3800. We drove in it and it was super nice. The interior was a little rough with the plastic panels falling off of the sides of the front seats. Also the electronic headrest in the back left seat was making clicking noises for a while. (apparently the electric motor is screwed). Car has 160,000 kilometres (99,000 miles). The owner is a businessman who kept up with regular dealer maintenance apparently. Any suggestions?
I know Im late to this video but I just bought a 2000 740il a few weeks ago and came across this video while reading up on the history of the car. And omg I haven't laughed this hard while sober in a seriously long time, Im trying not to wake my roommate. The "what's happening?" part had me in tears. Thank you stranger, wherever you are all these years later I thank you for this video.
CannibalJeri I did a cam belt/water pump service on a 2000 Audi A6 2.7T in my in-laws garage over a weekend. Saved $800 and entertained my father-in-law.
I don't own the Audi anymore, but the work I did do gave me this opinion: Although servicing the car may have more steps and more special tools, you get the idea that the engineers designed the car to be serviced. With domestic cars I've owned, I spend most of my time trying not to break all of the little plastic clips that hold most of the parts on the car.
So, does the owner of this car even notice that the off-shade color on the left side indicates that it has been in an accident of some kind? As treacherous as a used 7 series is, it's even worse if it was hit. Would I buy this one? I've got a whole bag full of NOPE.
Prettiest post circlular headlight BMW for sure. Someday when I feel comfortable not having a car with either no warranty or that isn't as unreliable as this, I will get one of these as a second car, It just looks beautiful and is just a damn comfy car, my Grandpa had one when I was younger and it was awesome. Such an awesome car, also it was the star of the movie The Game and I loved and still kinda like that movie and I love this car in that movie.
I know a guy who had one. Over here it had an actual TV and navigation system combined in the dash (antenna sandwiched in the roof somehow) and dual car phones (one in front, one in back armrest) running from the same SIM card. This WAS ALL factory built..... now he has a more recent 750iL. The guys a software millionaire.
My friend drives a BMW, and has definitely invited me to do questionable things with him at his cabin in the Poconos. I love the PA references in all your videos, they always give me some sense of pride (or disgust, I can't really tell) for my state and make me chuckle.
Just ran across these "Regular Car Reviews" the other day and can't stop watching. BRILLIANT!!!! By the way, the roads look like your from the Lancaster area. Nice part of PA if you are. Keep it real....
Oh man, I've driven this car after driving some of the later models. And though I do feel a 2006 model deserves to be worth $70,000 more so than this car.... this car... it's so fucking solid! I mean, if you take your hand and try to push in a side panel you're not getting anywhere! It's like a friggin tank! And driving down the road (in one with good condition steering) is just so smooth, so fluid, so accurate! You get out on the highway and punch it to get around someone, this car does it with confidence and style. Very smooth acceleration, very solid acceleration, no rattles, no "oh shit am I breaking something?" just lots and lots of smiles on your own face and the constant thought of "hell yeah"
Jeremiah Anthony Oh, I've never owned either year model. I worked at a Lincoln dealership as a porter and I've had to go pick one of these up used from a place about 10 miles away. I've had to go pick up a 2006 Model from about 30 miles away. And man I don't know how much maintenance is for parts of this car but I'm telling you whatever the price is, it's worth it, these models are some of the best cars money could buy. I even got the pleasure of driving a 2005 fully loaded 760Li with a V12 in it, that car was originally worth $130,000 brand new.... heaven! that's all I could say... heaven!
most likely this difference is the result of a partial pain job after the original paint had faded because of the sun/weather. This is common also as a result of non genuine paint brands or simply bad mixing.. trust me I've had an e38 that I smashed and re-paioted on multiple occasions. :)
This is great! I bought a 2001 740i sport about 9 months ago. As with any 19 year old car, it definitely has wear and requires attention but for $2800, makes a great highway car and daily for me, though I do all my own work so I'd advise against buying one if you take your car to a mechanic.
No question these cars require a huge bank accounts to keep on the road. I had one of these cars when it was only 5 years old and while the driving dynamics were the best out of all the large luxury sedans that I drove, the constant repairs got old. Every once in a while I dream about our 2000 740IL we had, but then my wife reminds me of the endless dealer visits and huge tow truck bills and I'm back to reality in no time! Great car to borrow if you know someone that has one. In the 3 or 4 years we had our 740IL I think we were about 17k in repairs. Pretty insane for a car that didn't even make it to 100k miles! No doubt cool car and still is one of the best driving big body land yachts made!
+DIY Dan Huge tow truck bills? Tsk tsk. You should've had a AAA membership. I don't think I'd ever own a ten+ year old German car w/o AAA premium, lol.
+Ken N car was barely 5 years old when we had it. No doubt AAA would have come in handy, but honestly we had no idea the reliability was going to be so poor. We fixed the Tow truck issue by selling the car. Don't get me wrong, I have a very high thresh hold for unreliable cars, but even this thing was too much for me. My 30 year old Porsche looked like Toyota's in terms of reliability compared to this land yacht.
let's not talk about squeaky doors and a loose steering wheel, because your brand new American Cadillacs do the same and I'm talking about a brand new 0.0KM car. you will loose if you try to contradict me.
I got pulled over for going 20+ over on the highway in my black 2008 750Li. The cop who pulled me over requested backup before approaching my car for some reason, and 2 additional patrol vehicles arrived before he came up to my window. I pleaded not guilty, requested a court date. The officer said he wasn't going to show up, so the judge threw out the ticket and the case. They're fantastic vehicles and handle exceptionally. If I could make one change, I would have upgraded to the V12 760Li series.
Ahhh yeah you did bring back the professor voice a good amount for this one! You're the man!! :D Keep em going! Also..have a 1991 Dodge Stealth R/T (1991 3000GT) for you to review in California in case you are ever in the area. Let me know! :D

I cannot speak to this guy's reasoning but in my case while I know there are great resources for DIY, I have no space to work on my car and honestly, I'd rather not deal with the hassle. Screw the "stealership" though, I take it to a good indy for maintenance.
Strahan740i bah, the 7 series forums could have given you pictorials to do everything on that car yourself for zero labor cost (the parts are expensive, but the labor usually kills ya)
the succeeding generation 7-series had even more problems and people have totally dissected that thing to the point of reprogramming the ECUs for fun
Yeah, if you're going to buy used luxury you really should be able to turn your own wrench. My cars have never been to the dealer post warranty.
I just bought one of these today before seeing your video. You guys nailed it! And made me laugh while nodding my head!
James Eckstein I'm driving a $3800 $80000 car.
Did it break yet
+Potato Sorry guys...8 months later, and she's still getting it done!
James Eckstein
how much money you got into her
+Potato 3800 for car, tax, title, tags. 600 so far with fixing up. Needs about another 1500 total for chassis and cosmetics. She's in good shape. Had 98000 miles when I got her.
My 98 A4 has dial controlled heated seats, but they only go up to '6' , not infinity =(
Mine go up to 7 ;)
My 97 A8 has the dial as well, obviously
This video is 7 years old now, holy shit
PLEASE... Also review the W 140 Mercedes S-Class. The E 38 and W 140 are the best 90's cars made.
Ls 400?
I have an Outback S'poor't. It didn't come with heated seats but that didn't stop me from putting the switches in.
Such evil. Much devious. Wow.
I like the way you think, lol.
You`re going to hell
PLEASE keep these coming! They are hilarious, and a great stress reliever as well. Seriously, if you're pissed off at the day (aka every Monday in my case), watch one of these. Any one. Doesn't matter, they're all awesome!
"La-la-la-la-la-la-still-going-straight!!"
this is a modern film classic.
Can pick these up for next to nothing... just PRAY nothing goes wrong!
actually it WILL go wrong, and often. Or have a lot of disposable income to spend on a car that is basically worthless.
yep its still a 70000 dollar car, that needs premium service. you have to know what you get into
Simon Coles Dude... please shut the hell up and learn how to use a wrench.
"heres where i keep my afterbirth collection." What a quotable show this is!
These reviews really are packed full of Pennsylvania. Makes me proud!
I swear this show is probably one of the best things to come out of PA
Isn't this the same model car to the car used in the beginning chase scene of the movie Transporter
Same body yes, but that was a 735i. They were not sold in the US, and rarely ever did someone actually order one with the optional manual tranny. Which was not available in the US. People swap them instead.
Also a Bond car crazy enough. Love the e38s
Yes, except that one made 6000 Horsepower because Jason Statham was in it.
Chandler Hejda the 735 was in the US
Actually the transporter's 7 series was a 750i and was custom converted to manual for the movie!
These cars look amazing with style 37 wheels (aka M-Pars) while they look old and lame with the stock wheels.
thats good to hear,I was starting to lose hope on owning one of these cars, I keep hearing that they arent relaible and not a good daily driver
I daily drove a 750il for a while, and those are far more complicated. My daily driver right now is a 2000 540i Touring which has the same engine as a 740il, and it's been great. If you maintain these cars properly they'll be quite reliable.
***** nice how much should I have saved up for the car in case the electrical stuff goes out
Enough to buy some tools for DIY and watch youtube DIY videos.
The Eyes Wide Shut of cars. Thanks for reminding me of my old repair hell e39.
What do these doors do? 😂😂
These cars are awesome. My dad had one, and those V8s had nice pick up for a heavy car!
So true! no of my friends called shotgun on my 740iL. they prefered to go in the back
I know Im late to this video but I just bought a 2000 740il a few weeks ago and came across this video while reading up on the history of the car.
And omg I haven't laughed this hard while sober in a seriously long time, Im trying not to wake my roommate. The "what's happening?" part had me in tears.
Thank you stranger, wherever you are all these years later I thank you for this video.
$20,000 in repairs because he didn't do any of the work himself
you cant on europoor cars
CannibalJeri absolutely not true
CannibalJeri I did a cam belt/water pump service on a 2000 Audi A6 2.7T in my in-laws garage over a weekend. Saved $800 and entertained my father-in-law.
CannibalJeri Really? I got an E36 318is since a few weeks and can do a ton of stuff myself. Gonna replace brakes completely tomorrow :)
I don't own the Audi anymore, but the work I did do gave me this opinion: Although servicing the car may have more steps and more special tools, you get the idea that the engineers designed the car to be serviced. With domestic cars I've owned, I spend most of my time trying not to break all of the little plastic clips that hold most of the parts on the car.
that steering wheel. and that squeaky central compartment door. Oh my. such character.
"luxury" in the description, not luxary ;)
Thanks, don't have time to watch it now, but will do in a couple hours
Good guy Mr. Regular putting the bloopers at the end rather than in the middle to fluff up the video
looking at the different shaded on this car, its been hit hard
Def seems to have a hidden past, and if they painted it that cheaply i shudder to think what they did mechanically.
Thanks for the email Mr Regular
So, does the owner of this car even notice that the off-shade color on the left side indicates that it has been in an accident of some kind? As treacherous as a used 7 series is, it's even worse if it was hit. Would I buy this one? I've got a whole bag full of NOPE.
One of our best family friend`s have a 2012 7-serires iL. The description of the people who drive them, is spot on.
boat house row. Nice
I am so thankful I live in southeast Pennsylvania so I actually get his videos
I love these videos
Love the voice overs/characters and fast changes. Nice critique of the 7. Well done.
The best looking BMW ever made.
nope, that's the M1
***** Elvis had a 507
***** Very pretty indeed. It's a tough call... comparing apple to orange.
I personally think its the e30
the e39 sport's look nice as well! they both have the 'classic' BMW look
Such an awesome car, also it was the star of the movie The Game and I loved and still kinda like that movie and I love this car in that movie.
im an actual breadstick
+An Actual Breadstick Which one are you?
the one made out of bread
Dread Simulator 2kfuckin'17 lol!
_-Aww-_ *_Ayy,_* _my breadsticks!_
Whatever happened to the seat heater adjustment dials, why get rid of that I mean seriously, just why? Why deny people of choice!
The lack of dials is proof the communists won the cold war.
wut
Audis have a dial on the screen, and you can adjust it up and down on 6 settings
My friend drives a BMW, and has definitely invited me to do questionable things with him at his cabin in the Poconos. I love the PA references in all your videos, they always give me some sense of pride (or disgust, I can't really tell) for my state and make me chuckle.
I've waited all day for this!
And now I'm crying laughing, thank you!!!!!!!
Sweet review once again, love all the PA references! Jokes are so much better when it's something local!
...but seriously, what are these doors for?
Just ran across these "Regular Car Reviews" the other day and can't stop watching. BRILLIANT!!!! By the way, the roads look like your from the Lancaster area. Nice part of PA if you are. Keep it real....
You guys need to do the 2007 VW passat.
Very smooth acceleration, very solid acceleration, no rattles, no "oh shit am I breaking something?" just lots and lots of smiles on your own face and the constant thought of "hell yeah"
how high is the maintenance for this sexy beauty
Jeremiah Anthony Oh, I've never owned either year model. I worked at a Lincoln dealership as a porter and I've had to go pick one of these up used from a place about 10 miles away. I've had to go pick up a 2006 Model from about 30 miles away. And man I don't know how much maintenance is for parts of this car but I'm telling you whatever the price is, it's worth it, these models are some of the best cars money could buy. I even got the pleasure of driving a 2005 fully loaded 760Li with a V12 in it, that car was originally worth $130,000 brand new.... heaven! that's all I could say... heaven!
best 7 series ever made !
my dad bought a 99 740iL fully loaded in 98 and it was the greatest car ive ever sat in. it even had navigation in 98
"Lalalalalalaa still going straight!"
My dad had one for a while and it was an amazing drive and gave no mechanical issues whatsoever. Some kid ran a stop sign and totalled it. It was sad.
Thumbs up if you're from PA,
Damn, I moved away from PA 4 years ago, and I still could tell you were from PA by your last name lol
Bryn Mawr, PA.
Lancaster, Pa
Erie, PA
I spent a night in Pittsburgh two years ago. Is that good enough?
jesus a history lesson in every video. i can't stop watching.
coming to england? you can drive my rover :P
Your part about the principal/teacher/student made me laugh my ass off out loud. Fantastic reviews and a wizard with words!
How to fix the engine bill:
Get an E-Rod LS3 crate engine, wire it up right and problem solved.
My mothers old ‘04 Lexus had stock dial-adjusted heated seats and when we bought it we were mesmerized by it.
In Eastern Europe, if a black E38 with tinted windows cuts you off and stops, you are in deep doodoo
Love the humor in the video. Got an E38 myself and it's such a great car 😍
Car looks like it's 2 diff cars put together. Paint from the front and rear is diff
Yea it needs new paint as this looks hideous!
+Aretas The XVII I'm just worried it's been two cars chopped then welded together
most likely this difference is the result of a partial pain job after the original paint had faded because of the sun/weather.
I don't see a point in owning a car you have to constantly dump money into just to keep running.
They can't all be Honda civics
YO BRO MY STEERING RACK IS SOOOOOOOOO TIGHT.
If you could do an e39 that would be kick ass. Keep the funny stuff rolling man
let's not talk about squeaky doors and a loose steering wheel, because your brand new American Cadillacs do the same and I'm talking about a brand new 0.0KM car. you will loose if you try to contradict me.
Lose* :D
Also he wasn't arguing that Cadillacs are better. He is simply stating that there are those things.
except you're wrong....soooo.
Brand new American Cadillac
0.0KM
That engine bay looked immaculate! My, volvo's looks like someone sprayed it with oil through a garden hose.
BMW felling, cool a friend of mine had one, not a 7 series , 5 series a big one still, hahah, I made his watch the video and he ran to hide and cry.
about to buy a '98 740 il for $3k... and you just made me so excited about it
What's a "BM dubayoo?"
a brand of europoor cars
malevolenceXXXensues what exactly do you mean ''europoor?
Marc Bredtved just an amusing way to say european
malevolenceXXXensues I find americanus much more amusing
ALL OF YOU ARE SO CLEVER
I got pulled over for going 20+ over on the highway in my black 2008 750Li. The cop who pulled me over requested backup before approaching my car for some reason, and 2 additional patrol vehicles arrived before he came up to my window. I pleaded not guilty, requested a court date. The officer said he wasn't going to show up, so the judge threw out the ticket and the case.
They're fantastic vehicles and handle exceptionally. If I could make one change, I would have upgraded to the V12 760Li series.
in 1985.
my volvo 240 had heated seats. Bmw ain't shit.
RiceReaper but does it have an auto tilt away steering wheel? nope, shit aint power.
you guys must be from SE PA. Looks like your always driving around Berks Co. Awesome to see a great local channel with references I know!!!
No that was a 5 series Tupac died in.
Tupac was shot in a black 7 series
Yea ur right had to go back and look at the pictures.
Andre Barrow and suge knight
***** Tupac faked his death. It's so obvious.
joker11asr Oh shut up. Goddamn conspiracy theorists.
One of the funniest videos about this monster no doubt about it 🤘🏻good job bro keep it up
The christian singles mingle bit is one of the best lines I've come across in a while...lovely.
Ahhh yeah you did bring back the professor voice a good amount for this one! You're the man!! :D Keep em going! Also..have a 1991 Dodge Stealth R/T (1991 3000GT) for you to review in California in case you are ever in the area. Let me know! :D
