  • A car so British, it apologizes for being on time. This is a car for looking like old money. When we were filming this, a lookie-loo walked up to the Jag and us..and said: "Do you have any Grey Poupon?" For real.

    I own a 1985 xj6 Sovereign and in 9 years of motoring it has never broken down on the road. It does not chew tires nor leak or burn oil. I get 4 years out of a set of Michelin tires. There are many myths told about these cars but if they are looked after and not abused they are very reliable and the engine almost bulletproof. When we bought the Jaguar it had 160,000 Km on it and now has 240,000 KM. some parts have needed replacement, they are as follows:
    Fuel pump at 180,000KM / 23 years old.
    Coil at 190,000 / 24 years old.
    Starter motor at 200,000 / 26 years old.
    Rear brake calipers at 220,000 / 27 years old.
    Remember these parts were the original ones and lasted longer than any other car I have owned before they needed replacing.
    The head has never been off and only minor electrics have played up.
    The transmission for example has only had a fluid change once in 30 years and changes much better than our 2005 Honda v6 Luxury which has only done 130,000 KM.
    The jaguar seats are much better than the Honda too as is the steering!
    Don't knock these Jaguars they are made with real leather Connolly hides as used on Rolls Royce s and feature stainless steel side window surrounds not chrome which are much more expensive to make than chrome. The xj6 uses an E type sub frame including in board brakes because it was still the best rolling chassis in the World in 1985. Jaguar used the XK engine from 1948 until 1987 with modifications such as fuel injection in the early 1980's. In 1948 the Jaguar XK 120 could reach a top speed of 120 MPH with the XK 3.4 motor in it. The later engines became 3.8 and then 4.2. Dam well built motor car the xj6.

      Paul David Cross I’m driving a XJ6 runs like a beauty previous owner had taken care of it like it was his child. I’m pretty confident in the cars engine it does need a cleaning of the engine and a lot of electrical loving radio and climate control being the number 1 priority I’ve been thinking hat it has to be my blower motor that is broken but I’m crossing my fingers that it’s he relay that needs replacement since the last owner gave me a box of spares and had a new relay inside of it

    I've owned my '83 XJ6 for 20 years now and still love it. Look after them and they are solid and reliable.
    I don't know why anyone thinks these cars wear tires any faster than any other car, they shouldn't. Get the tracking and wheel geometry checked - just like any other car.
    They accelerate well enough to keep up with modern traffic with four passengers. It's not a Ferrari so don't expect it to handle like one.
    I know those (heavy!) wire wheels were fashionable in the USA but they don't do the car any favours. Jaguar's original alloy wheels looked much better on them.
    Watching your Jag among other modern cars in your film clips I still prefer the Jag.

    You forgot the 3.4, unless you guys didn't get them over there. I had a 3.4 in poverty specification with cloth seats, it was a first year production model series 3 (1979) here in the UK back in the early 90s & my everlasting memory of it was that you couldn't get a cassette out of the stereo when the transmission shifter was in park lol. Loved the "harrumph" reference BTW, very "Family Guy" ;-)

    Acceleration ? Oh you'll want the V12 for that. 110 in 2nd. 144 in top. 16mpg urban. Still, if you can afford to buy one, you won't be worried about the fuel consumption. Top tip. The rear brakes are a bastard to fix. Pay someone else to do it unless you have workshop facilities.

    To the British people furiously taking to the comments to correct the pronunciation, we Americans know it's pronounced "Jag-u-ar" (or at least most car guys do). The problem is that when you pronounce Jaguar in that way, in conjunction with our American accent, you just end up sounding like some dopey moron trying hard to imitate a British accent, but failing. So we choose to carry on mangling the pronunciation instead. It's better this way. Trust us.

    • @kungfuninja55
      @kungfuninja55 9 років тому +64

      Agreed. I often want to pronounce it correctly though it would just be silly and sound ridiculous. It would be like talking in a thick southern accent only to call an 18 wheeler a lorry.

      The correct pronunciation is "yagwar". The British pronounce all words the English way, and give no regard to the word's origin or true pronunciation. The have a particular disregard of anything Iberian or Native American, as we see with Jaguar.

    I've owned a 1985 series 3 jx6 sovereign for 9 years and its never left us on the side of the road, it leaks virtually no oil and it burns virtually no oil. When purchased it had 160,000 KM on it now she has 238,000 KM and in the 9 years she has had a coil, starter motor, rear brake calipers, thermo fan and thats it , still not had the head off. These cars are very well made and feature the same Connolly hide that is used in Rolls Royce and the side window surrounds are not chrome they are stainless steel. Much of the body is finished by hand such as the rear end above the tail lights. The rear end is the same used in the E type jaguar including the diff, 4 shockers and springs and the front end featured anti dive technology. The xj6 chassis was considered to be the best rolling chassis in the World at the time. Don't be too quick to knock these cars as they are far superior to the modern ones built today at least in relation to quality. It's true that todays cars are faster , lighter and safer but they are built 30 years later. If you want a fair comparison to a modern car then look at the features on a late model Jaguar.many of the ideas used on modern cars emanate directly from the Jaguar xj6 which featured electric front seats, cruise control, 4 wheel disc brakes, two master cylinders one for front and one for the back. They had crumple zones front and rear too. They were and still are a great drive although lacking the airbags etc found in new cars. Every time I drive the more modern cars I fell like I am in a plastic box whereas in the Jaguar even after 9 years you always feel like you are sitting in a well made car with the leather and the real Burr Walnut and wool carpets. Can't see us selling "Bessie" anytime soon.

    Awesome :D Didn't expect a Jag on RCR ever.
    I have a 1990 XJ series 4 (XJ40) with the 4.0 AJ6. Bought it for €500 with a few friends to do a banger rally. They fixed a lot of the problems in the series 4, although it still has it's issues, like a very sensitive hydropneumatic suspension system that has leaked gallons of scary green fluid all over my poor town so far. But it only consumes tires when you do burnouts, it's properly fast, it has kinda almost decent gas mileage on the highways, the gearbox is awesome, all the electric systems work on our cheap shitty one, so I assume they're good, and it just looks more stunning than anything else you can get for the price. Although the series 3 does look better.
    But most important of all, it allows me to smash my obnoxious Jaguar keychain and keys on the table and say I have a Jaaaaaaaag. It indeed makes people think I'm rich, even though it cost me less than your average VW Golf. Should you own a Jaguar? Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Do it.

    I remember my dad back in the '70s getting to drive a friends Daimler DoubleSix (the V12, plusher Daimler version of this car.) His friend told him to take it on the motorway, then put a card over the speedo and told my dad to take it up to what he thought was 70 mph (my dad had a Rover P6 2000TC which wasn't a slow or unrefined car for the time) so my dad did so and said when he thought they were at 70. His friend took the card away, and the speed was 125 mph. The XJ6 really did utterly change what a prestige car was when it was launched back in the late '60s. Without it there would be no BMWs as we know them, no high spec Mercs, no Lexus, prestige cars would still be big, heavy and ponderous because that's what they always had been...

Another spot-on review, particularly the "Look Rich" part. People almost fall over when I tell them the car cost $2300 from Craigslist. It looks gorgeous. Of course, most of the electrical items didn't work on it when purchased, and the heavy slab of wood known as the glove-compartment door still flies open unexpectedly, but all is excused because Jaguar.

    One of my friends had one of these. In it's final iteration, it had a Chevy small-block, a Saab T3 turbo on one bank, a Volvo turbo on the other, exhaust pipes sticking out from under the rear doors, a Holley blow-through carb, and heads off a 400, all of these things found in trips to junkyards. He'd also welded valve body on the autp transmission, and he had to select the gears manually. It made enough power that after the rear window popped out for the second time, he welded a V-brace there.
    It still rode very nicely, although we had a very hard time getting people to race us.

Being in Maine we had it frequently flatbed towed to the nearest dealership at the time (New Hampshire I think, about 3 hrs south) at which point we would go get it and by the time it got home, it would require another ride down there. Then while I owned that car I bought an 84 xj6 that needed a transmission I paid $800 for the car there was absolutely gorgeous in and out again 2000 for the transmission, I paid a total a $4,000 for a paint job and the transmission drove the car for 4 years. Car got hit Insurance paid 3700. My last xj6 was in 1996 I paid $3,700 again it was Immaculate in and out. I drove the car for 4 years then gave it to my daughter we needed a car badly at the time. The car got hit the insurance company paid 4600. Then we pulled out the rear quarter panel and bonded it up no paint or anything and sold the car 3 days later for 2800. I would buy another Jaguar any day of the week they're good cars you just have to find the right one.

    I have the 90 xjs V12 convertible coup. Worst car I have ever owned. Seriously people stay far away from jaguar unless you want a full time project car. These cars will never be "fixed" there is always something broken or leaking.

    The series 3 Jaguar XJ6 did not come with a 2.8 litre straight six Jaguar XK engine, that engine was only used in the series 1 XJ6 and was replaced by a larger capacity 3.4 litre version of the same engine for the series 2 and series 3 cars, although it seems some very early series 2 cars for the UK market only were built using the reamaining 2.8 litre power plants. To be honest the 2.8 wasn't a great version of the classic XK engine and seemed to be prone to head gasket, cylinder head and piston problems that the larger versions generally didn't have. It was also rather underpowered for the XJ6, delivering decidedly leisurely performance in automatic form with fuel consumption hardly any better than the 4.2 which wasn't really appropriate for a marque which was irrevocably linked to the tag line "Grace, Space and Pace." In the series 3, at least for the UK market the engine line up was 3.4 litre straight six XK engine with twin carburettors, 4.2 litre with fuel injection and then there was the XJ12 with the mighty 5.3 litre V12 with fuel injection. I don't believe the 2.8 engine was ever offered in US specification cars and every 3.4 I'm aware of with US history seem to be European specification cars personally imported to the US so it may well be that the US only ever got the 4.2 litre XJ6 and the V12 XJ12, and there Daimler equivalents, as official US specification vehicles...

    Pls Mr. Regular, do more Jaguars. Get an XJ12, get one of the new ones, get an Aston with a V12, get even a Morgan if you're lucky enough to find one which has it; hell, travel to Europe if you don't find them in US. Pretty sure if you approached the Queen's country's manufacturers, they wouldn't say no.

    Just a grand show of misinformation.
    The rear suspension with the inboard disk brakes was high tech when it was in the Mark 10.
    It was high tech in the xj6, and it is still high tech today. That is why it is today used in many high performance hot rods such as the AC Cobra.
    Your statement that the inboard disks are only useful for a light car is just plain nonsense and wrong, and exposes your general inability to put into proper context something you may have read off a website.
    The higher the percent of the sprung weight versus the unsprung weight the more difficult is the ability of the suspension to keep the tire in constant contact with the road surface. This becomes very pronounced when taking fast corners on a choppy surface. A front engined car will have it's rear tail loose grip more so than the front where the engine weight is on the front tires. So hence the possibility of spinning the rear of the car out.
    Regardless of the cars total weight, it's the distribution that matters. The XJ6's weight in the back is lighter than the front so choppy surfaces will impact the rear more than the front. The Inboard Brakes have a two fold effect by removing their weight from the sprung component and adding it to the unsprung weight component making the rear act more like the front as if it also had the weight of an engine on it. This gives it's handling in choppy corners more reminiscent to that of mid engined cars.
    Normally only mid engined cars achive close to 50/50 weight distribution. So in most other front or rear engined cars one end of the car will weight less than the other end.
    So next time you are NOT driving an XJ6 around a fast choppy corner it will become very apparent for you the value of inboard discs. (if you survive :).
    The leaking of valve covers is usually due to poor maintenance where mechanics fail to clean or replace at regular interval (maybe 30k miles) the crankcase filter. If this filter plugs up the pressure in the crankcase increases putting pressure on valve cover seals. This happens to be a simple in your face 5 minute procedure.
    Unfortunately I will have to review this video again just to make sure I have not missed some other pearls of wisdom.

    • @MJorgy5
      @MJorgy5 8 років тому +1

      +311nonono Yeah, if you want a sports car, buy a Lotus, Mustang, or 2-seater and drive it as such. Keep the labor intensive braking systems away from family-hauling sedans or whatever else. I appreciate new tech, but putting complex systems on the appropriate car goes a long way also. Nothing worse than spending 6 hours to do a 90 minute preventive maintenance job so the car is .01g's better on the skid pad or whatever other point you were trying to broadcast.

    • @311nonono
      @311nonono 8 років тому +1

      You assume that I said that it is a sports car. I deify you to state were I implied or even stated that.
      My statement regarding the IRS was to point out the fallacy of the reviewer referring to the IRS as "obsolete" when it was used in many recent cars such as the AC Cobra, Austin Martin DB7 as examples.
      The AC Cobra is not a Mustang as the Cobra name may mislead, hence your thinking I am taking of a sports car.
      The AC Cobra was a Shelby 2 seat with a Ford Chain driven 427 v8.
      The Jaguar IRS was used as an upgrade suspension to the original.
      The rear brakes pads take less than an hour replace.
      As far as maintenance the rear suspension will go 300,000 miles with "zero" maintenance other than greasing (via grease fittings) once every 60,000 miles.
      Yeah, whatever the point I was making, right.
      If you don't know the point I was making don't you think that to assume may not make any sense ?

    • @MJorgy5
      @MJorgy5 8 років тому

      +311nonono I don't have a clue how IRS (independent rear suspension) got put on the table, as your previous diatribe was focusing on the merits of in board braking (which I agree is a suitable technology on certain cars). If an XJ6 is your flavor of 'performance' car, more power to ya.

  • @311nonono
    @311nonono 8 років тому +1

    The acceleration problem is probably related to a plugged up catalytic converter, fuel filter, dirty plugged up injectors, or some or all the above.
    Genius, the car is after all 28 years old, do you know what spark plugs are? Forget it, make believe I never asked, moving on.
    Wherever I park my black and burgundy interior 1987 xj6, I always feel like I'm in the middle of an auto junk yard.
    Yeah that's right, because this car makes every car around it look like just plain old boring JUNK, even it it just came off the showroom floor.
    The effect is understandable, after all this car has been referred to as one of the most beautiful sedans ever built.
    And the constant parade of gawking passerbys, even stopping to take pictures, will attest to it.
    I guess, in a way, you also attested to it with that maniacal jealous anger that you conveyed at the beauty of this car.
    You are angry because it stirred up in your subconsciousness a hatred for your own very ugly vehicle.
    Maybe in your pipe dreams someday you may own a vehicle of such beauty.
    Try not to be a dopey.

    Anyways, couldn't you just yank out all that goofy over complicated relays, sensors, computers, and electrics and replace them with something from Painless and Big Stuff, or something like that and then have a good running, reliable Jag while keeping the Jag drivetrain?

    • @billbuckalew9497
      @billbuckalew9497 9 років тому +4

      Nope, the 4.2l in this vehicle is prone with problems - things like slipping valve guides, rough idle, numerous fluid leaks, and poor engine management. Add to that all the Lucas horrors.
      I bought a new '87 XJ6. Right away the AC compressor froze, the brake reservoir leaked, and ultimately the head gasket blew - in the first 10K miles!! So there it sat for 20 years. Two years ago we yanked the XK and replaced it with an EFI LT-1/4L60E, to include the wiring harness and PCM. Now rather than advancing, it does indeed accelerate - with nary a single fluid leak and the peace of mind that a tow truck need not follow closely on every trip.
