  • In this video I play around with a new toy I got recently - a grader’s loupe / magnifier complete with a light and a UV (black) light! I want to educate the hobby where I can regarding baseball cards, especially with issues from the 80s and 90s, so we’re going to compare a regular ‘91 Topps Greg Maddux card with a “supposed” Desert Shield variety. In theory, the back of the Desert Shields are supposed to glow more brightly, so I bring you with me as I experiment and discover the truth about my card. Enjoy!

Thanks for that demonstration Brian - it was great to actually SEE the UV test and what to look for.
Above all, CONGRATS on owning an authentic Desert Shield Maddux! 🙌

Wow Brian this was so cool. And when the screen went completely black for what seemed like an hr i was laughing so hard. You can thank Orlando for the loupe 👊👊🤙🤙

Hah, I considered editing that out… but this was a LIVE reveal - I had NO clue how that was going to turn out, so I figured I’d leave it. It was only a few seconds, but I guess when you don’t know that going in, it feels longer! 😅
Glad you liked it, Dylan! It’s always a good day to learn something new about cards!

Saw you on four collectors and stopped by your channel. I have a friend who collects Desert Shield cards and he mentioned that black light trick. Cool to see it in action.
My favorite part was when the light was off and the video was pitch black 😂

I considered editing that blackout out, but I figured it was only a few seconds. 😂😅
I was also nervous because I hadn’t tested it before, so I was finding out the results of the black light test for the first time right when I was filming! Thanks for watching!

Thanks, Orlando! I hadn’t tested this out before recording, so I had NO clue what I was about to see! After I finished recording, I realized I missed an opportunity to test the 91 Topps Micro as well! It turns out, that one sort of looks like the Tiffany under the blacklight, not lighting up much at all! Hopefully others can learn from this short demonstration when trying to establish authenticity with their own Desert Shields!

Fantastic Brian - thanks for sharing! I have a graded Baerga Desert Shield on the way in the mail. I’m going to check when I receive it. I’ve heard that grading companies made mistakes early on when grading these, so I’m usually a little skeptical when buying them with old cert numbers.

Great thinking! Yeah, they got better at identifying fakes as time went on, but also counterfeits get better too! As this blacklight method detects the difference in card stock used, at least counterfeits using base cards should be able to be detected pretty easily. I hope your Carlos Baerga is legit!
      Thanks for watching!
