Nice new test to add to my tools! I usually smell the cards, look for "gloss" (Most pre 1970s are matte/slight gloss) and feel the backs for roughness (Fakes are always "Perfectly smooth") Once I saw you angle the Goudys I knew they were counterfeits by the gloss. And another tell tale is dark ink. Originals are lighter and vibrant.
Really appreciate the comment. Good info. I definitely learned all of that after doing my research from this instance. Just wish I had found something definitive, quick and easy like this before buying. Vintage is not my forte.
It's not the end all be all for authenticating cards like that. But it will weed out all the cheap reproductions people might try to pass off. Would have saved me $60 😅.
Yeah, wish I would have learned this before I bought them. I was too caught up in potentially paying off my house, lol. Really appreciate you taking time to leave a note.
The old timers will tell you about how much gloss it should have or to sniff it or various other things. But this is a quick and easy test that's way more straight forward than many others. Thanks for leaving a comment.
If you are buying old vintage cards, you should know just by the look and feel. The light test would fail if the counterfeit would just make it thicker. Theres no replacement for knowing what it feels and looks like..get commons from the same year if you dont have a clue but most vintage collectors know in an instant.
Do you have any way to evaluate that Topps cards 1964 from Venezuela are genuine? I have reviewed several already graduated with the light test and all of them allow light to pass through.
I'm not familiar with that particular set but did find a bit of info online regarding thin paper stock: "Yes Venezuelan cards vary more than Topps. As far as the 64’s they are probably produced on the most inferior paper stock than any other year. So it’s potentially safe to say that a low grade 64 could easily lose a 1/16 of an inch from just wear. They are just the most flimsy stock and wear very easy in my opinion." Sorry I can't be of more help. Thanks for watching.
Your right! The light test really works, thank you!
Glad it helped, thanks for leaving a comment!

Thanks Dee, I would have saved myself some money if I'd found this video in my research 😅.
I don't collect cards, but this is definitely a good tip!
