  • Hey everyone EPISODE 10 of my calf rearing series is now up.
In todays video we are going to look at what I make as a small-scale calf rearer.
I will be breaking down the expenses into categories and talk about ways we keep costs down.
At the end of the video we look at costs per calf.
This way it makes it easy for you to use this figure as a guide to work out what your budget needs to include.

I like your video series and will be watching your other ones, I was thinking about doing some calves for sale and also to get some cheaper weaners at the end. I liked your honesty and how you are very well informed. I will take your advice and start with 5 or 6 and see if I like it. Thanks

Thanks for all the info. You are braver than I am. Young calves are so much hard work! For me it is so much easier to get a few weaners and raise them to slaughter weight.

You are totally right!! If I had more land I definitely would get more weaners and raise them . Good on you 👏

Totally agree with not buying the cheap ones but about a year ago I bought 2 murrary greys ($50 for both) And a $10 white face all heifers and ended up selling for 550 each

heya Great video Well Done. any chance you would do a video of milk feed volumes? between nzABis bags books and tube clips and webinars here is at least 4 different versions reflecting body weight % = volumes + strenght , also cos they arent talking about big boned beef calves,
You cant feed a 3 week calf 7.5ltrs a feed, can you? with out drowning it
whats your take on volumes chick

Sure I can put together somthing in this. We'll I think of it like this... a calf on its mother wouldn't go drinking 7.5L in one go so.its not natural for the calf. I think too much milk can cause scouring as it can bypass the stomach and go into the rumen. So many more reasons I think the proposed Litres to body weight isn't correct
But ill aim on putting somthinf together on my take on this topic
.thanks so much for your comment 😀

@@thecurlefarm cool thank you. i get why two feeds a day is easier to fit into a dairy farms schedule and calving time is so so busy for all under staffed but just cos so many calories a day will give a high growth rate doesnt mean we should pour huge amounts of thick rich milky gravy ( 0nce a day double strength cmr) down a babies gullet, no wonder they get the shits. ive phoned nzbis but never an answer to verify thier different versions of advise.
love your work, have a great day
