Michael Detweiler - Integrating Livestock Producer Stories Webinar Series

Michael was raised on a small farm in central Illinois growing Christmas Trees, beef cattle and timber production. After graduating from Chiropractic College, he returned to the area and began a small direct to consumer 100% grass-fed beef operation with his wife and children while maintaining a full-time wellness practice focused on teaching that wellness begins with diet and lifestyle. The clinic’s clients became the primary customer base. He was the first in his area in the mid 1990’s to implement poly wire, step in posts and paddock grazing practices which stood out dramatically amidst the ocean of corn and beans.
In 2020 he took over the Ranch Management position at BYO Operations in Koshkonong Missouri. BYO is a 4,000-acre ranch owned by Jordan Rubin, founder of Garden of Life and Ancient Nutrition nutraceutical companies.
The ranch itself has been certified Organic since 2009 and Regenerative Organic Certified (ROC) since 2022. The herds of Beef Cattle and Water Buffalo are in the process of transitioning to Organic and ROC certified this year. The ranch no-till drills annual cover crop blends from Greencover into existing Kentucky 31 Fescue pastures and utilizes Alan Savory style Planned Rotational Grazing practices on the 2100 acres of open pasture. BYO and Ancient Nutrition embarked in 2022 with The Rodale Institute and Snaplands LLC into a seven-year soil health research study that is monitoring and recording over 40 soil health markers on the impact of the cover crop blends and planned rotational grazing on improving the thin and rocky soils of the Ozark Plateau.

I had some over grazed unfertilized pasture.
I got a soil test. Added lime to all. Fertilized to test recommendations on on feild per year. Excellent results on all, especially the fertilized fields. Also reduced size of herd. Divided the fields with much more rest periods. I am on the fence about cover crops to get an early start with next springs grazing season.
