  • Our guest is Non-GMO Seed Corn Producer Ed Baumgartner of Bass Hybrids.
Ed comes from multiple generations of seed growers, with his great uncles starting out in the 1930's growing the first hybrid corn in their area. Starting young, Ed rented his first farm at 16 in Olivia, Minnesota, otherwise known as the Corn Capital. His father died in a plane crash two years later which led to his family getting out of farming.
Ed went on to study Agronomy and Plant Genetics at the University of Minnesota in 1978. After graduating, Ed and his family moved to Puerto Rico where Ed was to begin working on corn breeding and develop a continuous nursery station for trait introgression. What was supposed to be 10 months turned into 7 years.
In 2005, Ed and his wife started 3rd Millennium Genetics in Puerto Rico along with providing contract research services. Ever since, their breeding program has focused on Durayield technology.
Nineteen years later, they are positioned to work with regenerative agriculture with proprietary genetics that they believe thrive with the soil microbiome. Their three daughters are actively involved in the business.

Does hybrid mean GMO? Is roundup ready GMO? Just asking for info

Good question... Hybrid simply means taking or combing the genes from two plants of the same species using natural methods - this happens all of the time - both in nature and in plant breeding and this is NOT a GMO because it is just using the genetic variability found within the same plant species. GMO is when a plant has had their genetic makeup altered to exhibit traits that are not naturally theirs. In general, genes are taken (copied) from one organism that shows a desired trait and transferred into the genetic code of another organism.
