Nick Lowe is an absolute sweetheart... very talented, self effacing & very funny. Saw him at Shepherds Bush Empire last week with the fabulous Los Straitjackets and the show was amazing. It was the first time I’d seen Basher since his Rockpile glory days, & he looked and sounded in very fine fettle indeed.
Darling NICK! We loved all the Brinsleys stuff and all the Rockplie stuff -HUGELY - and now we love you because all of it is so funny,, so right, and/or some moving. None of us who loved your pub rocker or Rockpile persona would ever abandon you. Because what you give us now is as heartfelt as it was then. And BTW, I know none of your incarnations has been a "persona."
The Grapes pub is still standing and is open to this day. It was the original Cavern Club that Nick is talking about that was knocked down and filled in.
I met Nick must have been 1992, I was in New York on business staying at the Plaza Hotel, one night i am drinking at the bar and who walks in and sits down next to me -- Nick Lowe - he was in town doing some promotions -- really nice guy - so we are drinking T and Tonic, Jack Daniels, Johnnie Walker Black, etc - chatting away, getting hammered - then I said "Nick you're married to Carlene Carter, right?" And he says "sure was" -- I said "man she is gorgeous, a real cutey" he says "we're divorced" -- I said "well if you aren't with her anymore, mind giving me her number" - Nick laughs and says "sorry mate" - so I say "well if i can't have her phone number, can I at least smell your fingers?" - Nick falls off his bar stool in hysterics. Great time, great bloke, great memories, man time flies.
@@AlekSandra665 true, he was put on the spot on that day because Danny Baker had got the sack; the end of that irritation. However whatever is on now is mindless drivel. Thanks.
@@AlekSandra665 No worries - I've followed Nick since the days of Kippington Lodge on John Peel's Sunday Top Gear. Nick is great - some BBc presenters are a bit half-baked. Have a good day
"Middle aged music" WTF!??? Is the interviewer a total fool? Fortunately Nick has probably heard interviewers even dumber than this guy seems to be and answers diplomatically and makes the best of it. I discovered Nick in 1978 when I bought "Pure Pop For Now People" which is a brilliant album that not only rocks out in various styles, but manages to poke fun at many aspects of society. Hope Nick keeps making great albums and rocking even if the interviewer seems to think "old" people can't do that.
wow this interviewer is really hung up on the idea that all "old" people have this one mindset and it's an experience of being on the scrap heap of history, and all the good years over, which this guy thinks are times of partying and being into certain kinds of music, which is apparently what he's into and thinks everybody wants to be into, and this guy seems to think you get to an age where you're too old and tired for rock music, i think that's a stereotype he keeps pushing, Lowe responds to his questions saying things that don't fit the stereotype and the interviewer doesn't seem to hear or have any interest, he interrupts and goes on to the next subject, he already knows everything and doesn't need to listen, i'm 3 minutes into it and am getting pretty bored. At least in this interview, this is a crappy interviewer. Nice listening to Nick Lowe though. geez this interviewer is simple minded.
The interviewer made himself look a prat with that attitude and you have to laugh at the idea he does this for a living. I'm sure he wouldn't have dreamt of taking such a condescending approach to other groups in society so why did he think it ok to pursue this line of questioning with Nick Lowe, who was far more gracious than he should have been.
I'm not completely thrilled with the interview. It seems like Geoff may not have done his research thoroughly enough, or perhaps he just let his asshat show a little? Either way, my feeling was "meh." No reflection on Nick himself of course: he's a god. More or less.
Most interviewers should be sat down and made to read ALL the comments about them on YT. 50 times. Until they GET IT RIGHT! This guy is a typical example of "most interviewers." 👎👎👎👎👎
WHAT is the deal with Nick saying that he only did BAD stuff up until the 80s. Don't agree. I thought his writing peaked during the first two BS LPs... to me he never did anything as good after. Peace Love and Understanding is good but nothing to go ape about.
"Not for this country"...........Rather for Americanised clever Dickie Nashville twelve bar Bookie Wookie...... Sorry for being cynical, Sure Nick made a few great tunes, but mostly it was Dave Edmunds inspired mid 70's American speeded up Nashville country twelve bar boogie woogie.....which Nick decided that was the direction to go would he have a decent paycheck.........

Nick Lowe. Greatest living Englishman.
Have you heard of a chap named McCartney?
what an INTERESTING guy nick lowe is!

LOVE LOVE LOVE HIM
What a pleasant guy! :) Great interview! \m/
I'm one of those who sits down because he has to, but I love Nick just the same.
Good interview. Well done Geoff Lloyd, liking you on BBC Five live
Really?!?! Only good because of the guest.

The original Grapes pub in Liverpool's Mathew Street that Nick mentions is still there (and still shabby).
I heard about Nick I believe it was around the time Elvis Costello started. Heard the Breaking Glass song and have been hooked ever since.
The interviewer frequently cuts Nick short just at the end of his reply. Too much of a hurry to get to the next question. Slow down.
Hi Nick are you left handed seen you sign 45s with your left hand and you play guitar right had [ love your work ]
Too bad the song was cut.
Is Nick's mic ON? All I can hear is the freakin' interviewer at 800 decibels.
Nick Lowe joins Geoff Lloyd to try to explain why he's still making records even though he is one of these old people
why is the interviewers voice so loud and nick lowes voice so low?

This interviewer seems obsessed with age.
Wonder how he’s doing now as a middle age interviewer

Nick Lowe is legendary, and the interviewer seems to be obsessed about his age. It's insulting and obnoxious.
Terrible interviewer. Don't interject your Mickey Mouse opinions, and try to not have your mic volume twice as loud as the subject.

"Dave Edmunds inspired"?? Lol. You missed it, Paul.
Dave may have the chops, but Nick's the ace tune-smith, hands-down. And that voice of his...
