  • British songwriting legend Nick Lowe discusses his new album The Old Magic and causing a riot in Australia.
Nick Lowe is a true legend of songwriting - '(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love And Understanding', 'Cruel To Be Kind', 'So It Goes' and many more.
He's back with a new album The Old Magic and he recalls starting a riot in Australia with his second band Rockpile, ponders the absence of nostalgia in his new music, tricking himself into conjuring up fresh songs, self-deprecation, and being the songwriter's songwriter.

Fascinating interview with Nick, his insight regarding the craft of songwriting very interesting to hear. Saw him with the amazing Rockpile several times, & they were one of the best live bands I’ve ever seen. He did a great concert with Los Straitjackets a few years back at Shepherds Bush Empire & introduced most - if not all - of the audience to that fantastic band! ❤

First off I’d like to Thank Nick for inspiring me throughout my life experience with your music and in my guitar playing, I grew up outside Boston and back in the70s you and Rockpile got a lot of air play on WBCN and later WFNX unfortunately I was in the Middle East in the early 80s and I didn’t get to see Rockpile, The first time I saw you was at the Boston Garden you opened for the Cars and Blew them away, I even told Greg Hawkes that when I saw him in one of the first Computer stores in Metro West i was a balls bass player so I thought 🤣I have seen you six times in total, I saw you and Elvis in Boston at the Pavilion two years ago incredible show. I think you’re a real gentleman kelp on Bashing!!!! It would be my greatest life experience to meet you, I’m not a star struck person as a matter of fact Danny Kline the bass player form the J. Giles Band offer me a job as a Roady during the Freeze Frame tour’ and I declined, I’ve seen Members of Areosmith in public on a numerous occasions while on the South Shore of Mass and never approached any of them and I do admire Joe Perry’s work.

Loved this - great interview! Thanks. Nick was a near neighbour to us in Chiswick West London when we first got marries. I passed his house everyday almost when I walked down to the High Street to open up the Tune in to 296 Record Shop in the High Road (long closed now) The milkman told me he lived there but I saw him riding around on his bike mainly. when Chiswick was like a village back then compared to now . Always admired Nick especially with his music biz history and his continuity Happy Days

Ha! that's great. I used to drink in a pub on The Strand on The Green in Brentford (near where he lived) in a lovely pub called The Crown and Nick used to drink there sometimes. He was in there one evening waiting for Carlene who arrived later and asked me to look after his pint while he took a leak. My claim to fame.

I've only recently discovered Nick Lowe from a slot he did with Brinsley Schwarz on the OGWT, that old BBC 2 70s show has been a source of many recent discoveries including the absolutely amazing Rory Gallagher.
This guy is alot better than many successful mainstream artists, i kind of respect any artists that declines to sell out to the industry,

This is a great interview. Nick tells the absolute truth about the song writing process. Truly a person deals in speculation as in a mining project, music or mineral. Very truthful interview. Refreshing.. Good job!

I just saw him in concert last night and this popped up in my recommendations. He was fantastic by the way. Touring with Los Straightjackets.

I saw Nick on Sunday in L.A. He was better than Elvis Costello who did some long dirges that were just boring.

I was leaning against the wall outside a Kebab Machine in Shepherd's Bush/Hammersmith in either '81 or '82 (I forget which); who should walk by but Nick Lowe. I remember him being SO much taller than I expected that ever since I picture him as the Keep on Truckin' dude....

Typical Basher. Ry Cooder rates him highly as a bass player and on the guitar he never misses a beat and yet he does laugh at himself.

I guess this interview was from 2011 or thereabouts. Nick Lowe is very English isn't he? From the sound of his music to the self-deprecation. I saw him in a smallish venue (maybe a few hundred) in California in maybe '86 or '87. Paul Carrack from Squeeze was with him and sang Tempted which made the crowd go a little wild. I'd gotten accustomed to pop bands being sloppy live, but he & his band sounded excellent. I really appreciated how he actually cared about his audience and the show he was putting on.
