Gazing at Mount. Tai 望嶽: the ambition of a young scholar by Du Fu 杜甫

- Mountain Tai 泰山 was the most sacred mountain during the time of imperial China. Many poets composed poems about Mount. Tai. Du Fu's Gazing at Mountain Tai 望嶽 is the best known poem among the poems. It expresses a young scholar's political ambition in such a powerful way that it is still cited very often by Chinese people today! This video translates this poem and compares it with Stephen Owen's translation of the poem. It also presents analysis of the poem and discusses the political significance of this poem.

I did not know all this amazing information about Mount Tai. How cool! I have made a mental note to visit once I come to this area in China. Love the last couplet…the feeling when you reached a goal that makes it all worth it, because it shaped your character and life experience, and you rised above it all.
Thank you!! Yes, Mount. Tai is definitely a great place to visit!! This poem is also one of my favourite by Du Fu. It is quite unique among all his sad poems about the suffering of people. This one is inspiring and full of confidence and ambition!! I just love the spirit radiating from this poem!!

Looks like Mr. Owen chose to make a more literal translation which is quite surprising.
Yes, his is the most scholarly translation which is very useful. David and I prefer a poetic translation. What is your preference?
@@dr.gaosclassroom I prefer translation that preserves the spirit of the poem even if it is at the expense of some literary accuracy if it is required to maintain the poem's sentiment.

@@dr.gaosclassroom A bit off topic but the phrase "A mountain is formed by accumulation of soil and an ocean is formed by accumulation of water." was used in the context of Russia China relationship. Where does it come from?
@@jirik2435 It is from 荀子-劝学： 积土成山，风雨兴焉；积水成渊，蛟龙生焉；积善成德，而神明自得，圣心备焉。
This poem is probably one of the best poems about political ambition from the Tang Dynasty. I wonder how such ambition is expressed in English poetic tradition, or any other poetic traditions?
