i fell in love with him at first poem, the one about meeting his friend after a long time (poem for wei ba). and then, poem after poem, I cried. hundreds of years apart, and even in translation, his thoughts still resonates
Thank you! I visited Du Fu's House in Sichuan, it was an incredible place to see. I feel that Du Fu was very ambitious, in one of his poems he describes himself as a Hawk looking down upon his enemies.
Wow, you are so lucky!! Du Fu is still very much loved by many Chinese in China and around the world. Yes, he was very ambitious. So were the many scholars of his time. One of the reasons they studied the classics and took the civil service examine was to became officials assisting the emperor to build the harmonious Confucian society!
@@dr.gaosclassroom I admire that about the civil service exams, build for the purpose of creating a better society and system to management. It was truly an impressive idea that eventually made it to other countries and parts of the world.
I think it is called meritocracy. Ideally this will be the best option in organising a modern society because society has become so complex with so much high technology that we need people with specialised skills to run the government and other organisations. But it tends to become elitist and lose touch with population at large. @@Jacques-vh4mu
Thank you!! I should make more videos about Du Fu's poems. He is highly regarded among Chinese intellectuals. I grow up memorising his poems insisted by my father. It might take a while for me to get over the trauma of being forced to memorising his poems!! Just kidding. I am grateful my father did that!! Du Fu composed some of the most beautiful poems in Chinese literary history!!
Hi, my dearest subscribers and friends, I just realise that during premiere, you can chat with me. I promise I would be around when premiering a video so that if you would like to talk to me, I would be more than happy to talk to you. So please join me during premiere in the future so we can talk.
Wow - so interesting to learn all this important context about 杜甫 - including that he was friends with 李白 and that he failed the exam twice (even if the second time wasn't his fault😄)🙏. And how cool - I will try to be online for a video-premiere and chat with you in real time😃🤩!!
There is a free online translation of all existing poems by Du Fu by Prof. Stephen Owen from Harvard. There is also a print version of his translation. I think his translation is focused more on accuracy than poetic style. But if you are learning Chinese, his translation can be quite helpful. If you are after poetic translation, David Young's is very good. Here is the link to a few of his translations of Chinese poetry: www.davidyoungpoet.com/page3b.html
Thank you for your suggestions. I have switched to the classical letters in my recent videos. This video is an earlier one. I did not think it was important back then, but I have realised that it is very important to use the classical letters in videos for classical poetry videos. Thank you!!

Thank you for sharing this moving story. Du Fu was the most compassionate poet I ever know!

@@dr.gaosclassroom Thank you!
Please use the classical Chinese letters because the poems were written in that letters.

I turned on the subtitle. Most of the subtitle is ok, but of the auto-generated subtitles are really funny like Confucius is transcribed as confuses.
