- Welcome to the Soole Garage! This is episode #4 on my 70 Chevelle restoration. In this video I explain and show how I prepped and painted the frame. I hope you enjoy and thanks for watching! Don't forget to subscribe to make sure you don't miss the next episode!
I’m starting my 67 chevelle this weekend, and these videos are super informative and a great visual learning experience. Can’t wait to start my first project!
That’s great I love the 67 Chevelle. Good luck on your project thanks for the nice note.
Big question, on the frame rail, passenger side, behind that body mount, the lower part of frame rail was wavy.
Do you have a video showing how you fixed that?
No video but your right I did have a few waves in that part. I was able to straighten it pretty good with a large hammer and dolly. I Held the dolly on the inside of the frame and hit the underside working the metal until it looked pretty good. You can also use a large crescent wrench open up the jaws to fit on the frame and pull up or down to help take out a wave or dent.
What type of media did you use in the speed blaster for the frame work? I am trying to understand the cleanest option to do this on my 66 Chevelle in my side yard and not create a huge dust storm.
I usually use fine grit coal slag. Its called Black Diamond I get it at Tractor Supply for $10. a bag. It works great. I have also used bagged dry blast sand from Menards. I don't recommend sand because it contains silica which can be a health hazard unless you have a good hood and a great respirator The Dryblast sand is cheap.
@@soolegarage great, thanks! Yes, I am also trying to avoid silica, so thanks for the tip.
@@soolegarage So the fine grit coal slag is okay left in your yard? Is it harmful or dangerous if you are walking on it? I am trying to understand the after mess that is left.
@@markprip I sanded most of my frame with the Eastwood STC tool. Because like you I didn’t want to create a huge dust storm for my neighbors. The coal slag was used for the hard to sand area, I liked it because it didn’t seem to cause as much dust as sand. Some of the product ended up in my yard some on concrete. Swept up the concrete and watered down the grass and you couldn’t even tell I was there.
Where did you purchase that small speed blaster ? I need one for my 71 Chevelle pro Street project. Eastwood ?
I did purchase it from Eastwood, good guess. It works great!
James - how are you moving the frame in and out of the garage?
I put the front end on a four wheel dolly and just lift and pull the frame outside. Now that I have the front end together I don't need the cart.
The back of a bare frame is pretty light, easy to lift and move. Once I get the rear axle installed I will have a rolling frame.
Just an air compressor and the gun ?
How much would it cost to have someone do this? I would totally do it if I knew how.
Labor for parts purchased is about the same as the cost of the parts you’re buying.. That’s not always the case but for example If my right and left front fenders are pretty rough or rusted out and, I Purchased new front fenders for about $1000 it’ll probably cost $1000 in labor to remove the old ones and install the new. It also depends on if you have a good engine transmission that’s a big cost to replace.ii
Since you have so much time, when can I bring my bug up?
As soon as I am done with the Chevelle, wait I’m not sure if I have bug tools
@@soolegarage I just need a paint job😁
@@toddbaxter48 Ok glad to help but can we put some SS stripes on the bug?
@@soolegarage I am open to the discussion
Do u wanna do body work on a 68 chevelle
