    One of the things I loved so much about Call Me By Your Name was that I felt like I was watching a genuine experience unfold. The scenes and the interactions between the characters felt so organic, and that simplicity still didn't detract from the beauty of the movie's settings and the beauty of those interactions. I really appreciate you making this video and giving me an insight into Luca's inspirations. I definitely need to explore some of these works, especially Maurice.

      Shaun Riley I really, really did not see it like that. There was no power imbalance in their relationship, or coercion and was portrayed as completely consensual on both sides.

    There's one more very important influence for Call Me By Your Name, and that's Sufjan Stevens, the man who wrote Mystery of Love and Visions of Gideon for the film. Even before Sufjan had written the songs, Guadagnino wanted to use his music in the movie. There's a remix of Futile Devices in the film, which was written before CMBYN for a separate album. Sufjan's music has always tackled sexuality in an interesting way, where his music suggests both male and female lovers, but never outright says which is which. His music about sexuality also takes a similar tone to CMBYN, in that there's no outside pressure of religion, social norms, or anything like that. When he discusses love and relationships, it is through a positive, human lens.
    Call Me By Your Name emulates this sense of fluidity in sexuality very clearly. It's never overtly stated if Elio & Oliver are gay, bisexual, or if this is "just a phase" for them. Such labels or overt statements would only detract from the film. Instead, the film focuses on what's important: that Elio and Oliver love each other. Their love doesn't let the world get in the way, and it doesn't force or push to make a name for itself. It simply is, and that's perfect.

      That sounds nice but I'm pretty sure just a good match and not an influence. The lack of labels and not addressing sexuality and making it a big deal is just how the book is written

    • @latenightcashews
      @latenightcashews 5 років тому +10

      yes, spot on about how the film simply embraces the connection between elio and oliver for what it is and never rushes to put a name to it. this reveals not only the rawness and immediacy of their attraction, but also how self-assured it is: they are more lucid than anyone for what they feel for each other and there is no need for an extraneous explanation. i appreciate that disregard for labelling tremendously, it's one of my favourite elements of the film.

    I completely agree on that tired cliche of an institution ruining whatever was going on in a movie. I hate that device. And 'Call Me By Your Name' was great at staying away from it. Now that I'm 34 freakin' years old I notice all of the lazy tropes screenwriters use to pander to the lowest common denominator. It's not about avoiding the simple ideas, it's about not giving-in to the overdone ones.

    I've watched this movie 3 times in the past week, and I still can't tell you exactly why I love it so much. I'm straight. I hate romances. And yet, this film is just so fucking (pun intended) captivating.
    The dreamlike setting and pacing, the long voyeuristic one-shot scenes, the pitch-perfect acting... Yah boy who played Elio is a goddamn legend. The credits couldn't even upstage him. He was like, "Go on, credits. Do your thing. Don't mind me. I'm just gonna keep owning this role like a champion."

      OK SO YOU'RE GONNA LOVE THIS: Timothee Chalamet (Elio) about that last scene: “Music plays a really, really, really big role in all of the acting I do. For the fireplace scene in this film I had a little earpiece, that's playing the song (Sufjan Stevens’ “Visions of Gideon”) the entire time so it kind of it gave sort of the mechanism or barometer by which to know okay, how is this song going, where are the arcs of the song here."

      "Beauty is truth, truth beauty. That is all ye know on earth and all ye need to know. John Keats, closing line of his "Ode to a Nightingale."" Beauty is a Platonic ideal. We can recognize it in the real world, but we are not able to melt with it, become part of it. Beauty is mental perception of a perfect ideal. Truth is reality, and reality is something experienced in the imperfect physical plain we live on. Elio and Oliver dance around this throughout the entire movie. And now they must return to their lives before they are consumed by their mutual dilemmas. I believe this conflict is the driving force of the story, he difference being that Oliver is aware of their place in a game while Elio hasn't a clue that he's the "Grand Master" (D&D) of its dangerous progress,

"Remember Me" is beautiful, "Mighty River" was fine, "This is Me" was... I guess inspirational (keep in mind, I can't stand "The Greatest Showman") and "Stand Up for Something" was a highlight in an uneven story.

    I'm so grateful because I thought exactly the same things that you show here. The ''lack of direction'' and editing makes the actors shines, their body is always on movement, I will never forget when Elio reads the letter ''Grow up. I'll see you at midnight.'' Than he spin and just throws himself in the bed(because is to much feelings to process). And I was anxious too for waiting something bad to happen and I felt so happy in the end.

    One of my favourite things about this film is the way it plays with time. When you’re watching its slow and patient and feels like it goes on forever, but looking back on it the summer passes in the blink of an eye just as much for the viewer as it does for Elio and Oliver.

  • @VishalDubey

    well, i was expecting some kind challenge too, but when it didn't happen i felt so open about this world may be the hollywood filmmaking has created that anxiousness in us to wait for certain things, to expect the expected. But, as this film is shot and the story is portrayed it makes you fall in love with summer, the outside world, the nature, the bird chirping... creating a environment between these two people, makes you so comfortable. i loved this movie.

    • @tuuliamoors4134
      @tuuliamoors4134 6 років тому +10

      The director even said that they could have gotten bigger budget, and also could have made the movie sooner, had they agreed to add an antagonist. Potential financiers where saying "What do you hook an audience on if there's no antagonist?" I hate that audiences are assumed to just want the same old over and over, certain tropes and cliches. Personally I love getting something fresh and unexpected, and I'm sure a lot of people do - when given a chance to even get those movies. Thank goodness film makers didn't compromise with this. I'm sure many others do (and how can one blame them), when years and years go by and they keep getting told "if you make this change then you get the money to make your movie."
      I also loved that this was all good, no evil, all love, no hate. The kindness, compassion and warmth was extraordinary. I wish that wasn't as rare as it is.

      This is not fact. This is as fictional as Harry potter. Science can't study this and they stopped ages ago. The images in the mind and in the body on wanting to nut in the fecal cavity aren't from this world and is only psychological, not anatomical/neurological. So horray for fiction...

      Rachel Darmawangsa then why have we studied the cosmos? Why have your studied the big bang or black holes if it doesn't have a purpose. Your only saying that cause you have a informational void that science had never ever wanted to opine again once it was determined gay is in the mind. The reason you went to school is to study purpose. Ugh not you would've learned farming and cooking. Don't lie and say it's not suppose to have a purpose cause then your clearly saying carnal desires trump animal/mammalian standards. Just because you'll buy anything sold to you doesn't mean thinkers of this world are as gullible. And up to this point, this, what you see, has NOT been made to make sense by science, either organic or physiological. Eat up then.

    I wish I could put into words how much i loved this movie. The mood, the music, the places... everything. It's like that nostalgic love affair you had that you knew wouldn't last but was great while it lasted. It was not a typical gay love story but a love story where the characters just happened to be gay. I just wish we had more movies like this.

    • @pearpenguin
      @pearpenguin 6 років тому +5

      The movie is beautiful and speaks to many people but ultimately I can't get on board with it fully. In some ways it is a typical gay love story because it show the experience of a small percentage of "gay" men. But pressure from family and society lead Oliver and Elio to have relationships with women. Oliver will get married and have gay sex on the side whenever he can. Elio experimented with straight sex and at the end reconnects with the woman he hurt who says she forgives him. It's not my story, as a gay man, but both Oliver and Elio's stories are the stories of many gay men I have met so it all rings true. My disappointment only stems from the thought that during the film this idyllic world would be shattered by homophobia or AIDS maybe and my relief that since none of that came to pass it could have been a perfect love story. Why couldn't they live happily ever after. Well, I suppose it's not written that way. I still yearn for the film where two fully gay men fall in love and don't have it destroyed by AIDS or homophobia or family and societal pressures. Any recommendations anyone?

      Shaun Riley Elio is obviously a very well informed 17 year old (Oliver is 24). An age gap like this is not very uncommon in gay male relationships. Unless the older person preys upon the younger, or, is in a position of power (guardian, teacher, etc.), I don't think we can argue that this age gap can do any harm. It may make the relationship end quickly though. Moreover, Oliver keeps asking Elio if he sure about what he is doing. The age of consent in Italy where the story takes place is 14 and in many US states it is 17. Completely legal.

Inevitably everything came back to homophobia aids violence self loathing either by plot sub plot , evil character etc. etc. you also have the tension waiting for that shoe to drop and then this film finally and never did. On top of that the film is a movie lovers delight technically with style color mood characterization acting directing cinematography etc. why has it taken so long? I’m just glad it finally happened I finally see myself in a movie.

Not necessarily to pass judgement on films, but to offer a spoiler-free analysis for the masses of what to look for in each film and perhaps how to come to their own, more informed, judgment of films. A movie review site that's actually a course on film analysis in disguise.

    I had a completely similar experience when I was watching this movie and realised that there wasn't going to be a scene where they were 'found out'. It was an expectation I didn't even realise that I had until I was on the edge of my seat waiting for it to be fulfilled. Once I realised, and managed to beat it down, the film became so much more thrilling. It made it a much more introspective story about a person learning who he was instead of a gay teenager defending himself, as well as opening the door for some truly exceptional performances that never really dip into anger or hatred. It made what had been a beautiful film into a beautiful story I'd never seen told anywhere else and easily dissuaded any notions I might have had that this was just critically acclaimed because it was a nicely shot gay film and the Oscars needed to check some diversity boxes.

    One of my favourite films of 2017. As you pretty much said CMBYN has no antagonist, it's so refreshing.
    It's nostalgic. It's still a universal love story that feels more real than most coming of age films.

    • @YanaPetruk
      @YanaPetruk 6 років тому +1

      stella the antagonist of this movie is time... and maybe a little bit even Oliver’s parents’ intolerance and strict views which probably made him not to follow the true self and what he really wanted. If you read the book, which I highly recommend, you’ll see... but maybe that’s just my thoughts

    • @StellaMariaGiulia
      @StellaMariaGiulia 6 років тому

      Yana Petruk, yours is a good observation, and I still have to read the book, so you’re probably right!
      I was more referring to my (limited) notion of homosexuality in films, even setting aside the films of the 40s and 50s where it was used as an example of losing and damning oneself to destruction, movies that made more recent history like Boys don’t cry and Brokeback mountain go around the acceptance (or lack of thereof) of others, of oneself.
      Again I don’t know about the book, but in the film we know Oliver’s parents are likely to oppose to his relationship with Elio, but they’re not in the film, while everyone present in the film is accepting and open. There’s is no violence, either.

    The use of bodies of water to symbolize baptism as transformation, physical immersion, or more colloquially, taking a plunge, is a common motif in many of these films. Actually when I first saw the lovely CMBYN, my reaction was "Eric Rohmer called and wants his entire gestalt back" and that Guadagnino had copied every detail of his mis-en-scene from the costuming (striped shirts, anyone) to outdoor dinner parties, endless bathing-suit-clad summer languor, bicycle rides and stolen kisses on the berm. As an homage, it's a brilliant success.

    What an astOUNding analysis. I could not put my finger on what made this film seem so *alive, bursting* with engery and emotion.
    I did not even realise until you pointed it out that I too was waiting for an "establishement" to swoop in and destroy everything, but once I realised that wasn't going to happen I completely let go and became absorbed by the story.
    This combined with the incredible natural filming style, the lack of frills and the focus on the senses, not to mention the raw and stunning performances by *every* actor explains why this film left such a deep, deep impression.
    Stunning video, as per usual. I cannot wait to watch all the films you mentioned. THANKS NERDWRITER!

    I wonder how many caught the scene reference to "Maurice" when, while Oliver is looking at Elio sleeping their last night together, there is a train whistle that indicates Oliver's leaving, thus ending the relationship. This is very similar to Maurice, when, after a night with Alec, there is a ship's whistle that indicates Alec is leaving for Argentina, thus ending the relationship.

    I'm not usually the type who seeks to analyze a film. I've always just tried to enjoy it for what it was and move on, but I've been so taken with the story of Call Me By Your Name since I first read the book about 10 years ago and was incredibly pleased with the film version. So pleased, in fact, that I find myself "analyzing" it. I've read everything I can get my hands on and watched more interviews with the author, the screenwriter, the director and the cast than I can begin to number and now this video has made its way into my "study", for lack of a better term, of both the book and the film. Very enjoyable and very enlightening.

    Can somebody please tell Quentin Tarantino about this? Most of his films since the turn of the century are defended with the phrase: "It makes sense if you've seen all the films that inspired Quentin Tarantino." Which is kinda like defending a sloppy screenplay by referring to the (comic) book that is was adapted from. Can't we just watch a movie without having to do homework to understand what it is about?

    My favourite scene is sleepless night and early morning, when Elio is outside, alone, thinking. This is such a precise representation of person being in love for a very first time in his life, feeling connected to something big like eternity, that exists. And also mixed feelings of loneliness and hope and happiness and, for some reason, grief.
    And the other scene in the bedroom, where love is shown through the strongest hug that they gave each other. It actually is this embrace showing us this unbearable feeling.

    For the first two-thirds of the film I enjoyed seeing the two actors portray these characters fumbling around one another, unable to piece together their own unfamiliar attraction to one another. I identified with the confusion, the awkward but bold confessions, and the sneaking around the seemingly aloof parents. However it felt safe and without much to say, until the climax of the third act when Elio finally sits down with his father to talk about his "friendship". That he had known about his son and his student's intimacy, even so celebrating it as a beautiful experience to have in one's life.
    It's a conversation I wish I could have had with my father. As an adolescent I hid so much of myself from my parents, if not everyone around me. It was so cathartic to witness such a scene on screen, where a father leveled and empathized with his son, rooting him and his emotional experience on, celebrating his humanity. I cried like a baby.

    Call Me By Your Name is my new favourite film and I am so happy this video was made! I was late to the party and didn't see it until last month, but it completely sucked me in and I rewatched it many times in the following weeks. I had rented the dvd from my local library so I could also watch the commentary, interviews, featurettes and other special features, which are my favourite parts of films, sometimes even more than the feature film. As a filmmaker/film student I am always looking for more info and clips that delve into the behind-the-scenes of films and tv shows.
    Since then I have felt a craving for more films with similar aesthetics/style/stories that are international (rather than the english speaking movies that are so common in north america. Now I have a list of films and directors to look for!

I'm so stoked my favourite film of last year got the Nerdwriter treatment :D x

    "Maurice", one of the saddest movies I ever saw... "Call me by your name" is very close, the ending really tearful.

    I KNEW IT! I just knew that nerdwriter would make a video on CMBYN!! I was just _waiting_for it! This film, even if it didn’t match with your liking preferences made you feel inspired and for that I was sure that I’d be seeing it on here soon! Just been waiting for this ! XO

    After viewing CMBYN for the second time I went back to Rohmer's films and could see a clear connection for Luca's inspiration. As a film scholar he seems very open in interviews about discussing his influences. Thank you for this amazing breakdown, your definition of the "revelatory feeling" is spot on!

    I'm just so thankful to Netflix Philippines for having this available on stream. This broke me many times and it feels amazing. I sometimes would check every now and then new people being drawn to this master piece.

    Great video!! I’m amazed at how you are able to so consistently make fantastic video essays. You continue to be one of my inspirations, and are one of the primary reasons that I began my own UA-cam channel. Thank you, and keep up the awesome work!

    Don't know the French film, don't know the Victorian-era film. But I do know "Maurice"! Great that you were able to see echoes of that movie in "Call Me By Your Name".

    Damn it Evan! you beat me to it. I was planning to make a video on Call Me By Your Name.
    This means one thing, we now live in a world where everyone talks about everything. Which means we need to pay more attention to what we say more. The world where privacy is no longer exist.

    I had passed on this movie previously, but as a result of your excellent, thorough & most influential piece on it here, I immediately watched it & am so glad I did!! I absolutely loved it. It was really something different & a strikingly beautiful film.

    This video has made me realize that the gay lovers story in Cloud Atlas is a complete James Ivory homage. 😱

    I love that you describe that anxiety and fear you felt watching this the first time, waiting for the bad thing to happen. I felt it too! This was exactly how I felt -- I was so anxious, waiting for the inevitable cruel homophobic character to destroy the magic of their joy and relationship, and it was a miracle to me when I realized nobody would. And -- even better -- that Elio's parents felt nothing but empathy, support, and love for Elio's relationship with Oliver, and they quietly understood what he was going through. Elio's father's quiet speech to Elio at the end slays me every time (Michael Stuhlbarg is incredible).
    It remains one of my favorite films of all time. Just a beautiful, gentle film, and everyone in it was superb.
