This is like wanting all the benefits of marriage while taking none of the accountability and interdependence that comes with it to grow one's soul

But who benefitted from this marriage? Think about it. Kiran Rao was a young and promising filmmaker when she married Aamir Khan. Her first movie, Dhobi Ghaat was relased in 2010. In all their years of marriage, she supported him as he went on making hits after hits. These included not just supporting him in his artistic endeavours, but also in his work off the films, like with the Paani foundation. Her career and creativity had to take a backseat for 13 years. It is after they divorced that she made her second movie, Laapata Ladies and what a gem of a movie it was! It is natural for her to want space for herself if she is the one who has sacrificed more in the marriage. If marriage as an institution allowed both men and women equal space to nourish themselves, then there wouldn't have been divorces. Unfortunately that is not the case in India. Also, compared to Bollywood marriages where couples live together after losing all their love for each other just because they don't want negative attention from the public, it is great that these two decided to go through a public divorce and remain best friends.

Today's relationships are materialistic. Marriage is a defunct institution. Stay single stay happy.

Oh yeah. Let's have Bollywood marriages instead where couples cheat each other all the time but stay together because people like you think that is the norm. Also, ask the people around you how many are truly happy in their marriages. At least these two are honest. They have gone for an amicable divorce and have stayed as best friends.
