Nice pack here, a truly indispensable part of the British model railway scene. Hornby was quick in spotting this gap in the market, the serious collectors have been crying out for Beatles and Cola stock for years. I believe your sayings of "Excrement in model railway form" and "I've had bowel movements that have constituted better value for money than this" certainly apply here!😂
Lionel released a complete collection of Beatles themed cars & F series diesel locomotive years ago, a friend has the complete collection, including the yellow submarine on the flatcar.
Thank God for correctly placed apostrophes! It still don't help me though... I cannot unread "The Beatle Shits"! 😂 Good job Bachmann did not produce this tat. Would have looked just as shite with the same with a price tag of £200! 😂 Well done mukka. (I think someone on Hornby's "management" team has a Beatles fetish.)
One of The Beatles, Ringo Starr, was the narrator for the first two seasons of Thomas and friends. Also, over two weeks ago, country singer Toby Keith passed away
I couldn't understand the comment 'I like The Beatles, but I think that will be tested today'. The only thing that ties the band to a 'tatty' train pack is Hornby themselves. I'm a massive Beatles fan and I'd never dream of buying such rubbish. Obviously, Hornby approached Apple Corps for a license, but that's about it. I wouldn't be surprised if Hornby was 'on the skids' trying to make quick cash grabs with product tie-in's like this, to save their skins. Sam has had a bit of fun trying to drop Beatle song titles in along the way. In this case if Hornby was asked to 'Don't Let Me Down', they failed miserably!
If Hornby love doing stuff like THIS then surely they could do a train set of The Miracle Express from Queen's "Breakthru" music video. But nope, this was cheaper to produce and they only put the Beatles on it to add value.
Sam Again. I'm not a model rail enthusiast (probably my loss) but with great respect your videos are pure entertainment. By the way, it will soon be fifty years since ABBA won the Eurovision Contest 😅 👍
Hi Sam, I was in my local hobby store here in Australia not so long ago and there was a guy aged in his 60s and we spoke of our interest in 00 gauge rail and to my ASTONISHMENT, he was one of these Hornby Beatles railway collectors . He was looking forward to any new releases to add to his collection. I being of same age to him , was try not to laugh but I did then had to accept there is horses for courses. However I was relieved when he told me he lived on the other side of the country and Australia being a large place well. I was ok with that.
If they wanted to make something actually useful for modellers that involves The Beatles, I think they should do scale figures of them. One of the movies they made (A Hard's day night) has a scene on a train, and putting the figures inside a mk1 coach, to recreate the scene, could be a nice easter egg to have on a layout . Even if you dont want to put them in a coach, having them on a layout would be cool, just like miniatur wunderland has a lot of curious scenes there
They did, a pretty awful and unconvincing thomas body on the standard 0-4-0 chassis used under the L&Y Smokey Joe ST, the Barclay diesel, the ‘Queen Mary’ tank loco and Percy. it lingered in the range as slightly cheaper than the 0-6-0 Thomas into the 90’s before disappearing for about 10-15years and came back in railroad and as the collectors club loco without the face as a freelance loco.
I’m not sure why they chose an 0-4-0 faceless Thomas for this “limited edition”pack. Kinda ironic considering that Ringo Starr narrated the first two seasons.
First Hornby did coca cola, then steampunk, and now this, what next a space adventure train pack. I honestly don't know anymore Sam. Cheers Jasper & Willow
Hmm. This is true tat! If i were hornby, then I'd make some different wagons - especially a madness or a ha one - to give a bit of variety, not just the beatles - great review as always sam! Also one final thing, hornby really shouldn't have put the "beatle's hits" like that on the wagon,as the s of beatles and the hits looks slightly innapropriate 😅😂
I had no idea Hornby still had this mold, It's their first ever thomas model from the early 80's but repainted lol. Ringo did narrate thomas in the 80's so that could be the link.
Since the three serving members of Queen own everything to do with it, it would be impossible for something like that to happen. Brian May and Roger Taylor are very protective of Queen , also anytime they embark on something new they always inform John Deacon who has said no on occasion to things and they haven't gone ahead with it.
@@ThomasJM it would also be to expensive since they had to use a real locomotive and then also put actuall work in it to make it "screen accurate" and not having an unpaid intern to do the work with the design
Because like the Hornby Christmas tat some mug will buy it , on the lighter side I bought the yoko Ono van it keeps making a terrible squealing noise that sounds vaguely reminiscent of music .
Sam...I'd like to say well done for keeping it professional in your review. You may not like it, you may have felt the need to be cynical,....but at least you didn't stoop so low as to be very childish like locomotion motion seems to be doing.
The Eurostar set is different in that it's very loosely based on the real thing. I don't mind Hornby producing Beetles stuff, but please choose a more modern tooling to be the base ffs!
Ok, the thing about this actually that gets me is that in Liverpool there are REAL trains with REAL Beatles livery on them but I swear Merseyrail must not allow companies to make models of their trains because no such models seem to exist
My favourite product in this line that I saw in Fenwick once was the one based on the album "Beatles For Sale", a phrase which has some quite dark implications when printed on the side of a box wagon.
Hornby also have a Progressive Rock Fan in the naming department. Although these are not over prices "memorabilia". We have the King Crimson loco with the (Richard) R.Fripp Mining Company waggon. Then the (Steven) S.Wilson Paper Mills loco. From Marillion we have the (Steve) Hogarth Stone, (Steve) Rothery Industries, (Ian) Mosley Tarmacadam, (Mark) Kelly & Son Paper Mill and the (Pete) Trewavas Aggregates Ltd locos. From Rush we have the (Neil) Peart Industries diesel loco.
"Time flys by when you're the driver of a train, speeding out of Trumpton with a cargo of cocaine..." I get the feeling whoever at Hornby came up with this shite was probably on something too!💩😵💫😁
The Joy Division Oven Gloves were actually an original design on oven gloves which Tesco Homewares sold from about 1980 that coincidentally had a design on them which was like the cover art from Closer. I was briefly amused at the time little thinking that it would lster be a thing of epic proportion.
Every time I see the "THE BEATLE'S HITS" wagon, I find myself removing the apostrophe and moving the space between the S and HITS. Was it A Hard Day's Night, where the Fab Four were on a train (with Wilfred Bramble, of Albert Steptoe fame, playing Paul's dad)? That might have been more appropriate to replicate, with licensed scale figures of the band, maybe one set as standing figures, and a second set with them holding their instruments. Or at least a train that served Liverpool in the 1960s. I agree, a cynical cash grab from Hornby, the sort of thing that a well-meaning but ignorant relative would buy someone as a birthday or Christmas present, "Because I know you like trains and the Beatles". I was worried when Sam said that he was going to get his knife, that he was going to do something drastic!
'Ave a medal, lad... for doing the review...🎖️ If 'naff' was a model train, it would be this one...that loco is just plain 'avin a larf.... It's lucky there is no DCC...one could only imagine the sound effect going "love, love me do " as the train goes along.....🙂🙏🇳🇿
Before I begin: Rod Stewart has a HUGE collection of Hornby stock. HE should have a Hornby series instead of The Beatles! Okay...this set was a weird choice when I saw the announcement. Even weirder is the fact that they've used the old toolings for their 0-6-0 Thomas the Tank Engine and the 0-4-0 version available in this set. This year marks 60 years for the Beatles breakthrough as a worldwide phenomenon, such as their successful film "A Hard Day's Night" and tours of the US, Hong Kong and Australia, with albums being released in those countries as well as Japan. All that said, I've no idea why Hornby is doing this, and moreover using their toolings for THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE of all things. I doubt very seriously that the Ringo connection to Thomas has anything to do with it, either. This set does look like a waste of time. Novelty releases are fun when done right and this set misses the mark by quite a lot. And I say this as a huge Beatles fan.
As Sam mentioned in the video, they ride a train for the beginning of the "Hard Day's Night" film. How great would it have been if we got some sort of set with a nod to that? Could have been two Mark 1 coaches with an appropriate engine and creatively done artwork collage printed on the set. Or even better for a serious collector, you could have had someone research what loco was pulling their train and then include with it three mark 1 coaches each featuring scenes from the film detailed inside with figures: a compartment coach with the Beatles in their compartment, a dining coach with the Beatles and Paul's grandfather etc, and finally a utility van (I'm guessing that's what they were in?) playing their instruments to "I Should Have Known Better." Now that truly would have been a collectible train worthy of the Beatles.
Personally, I would’ve done is I would’ve included a Ruston shunter with the pick up done in a wagon, that would be longer that could carry the yellow submarine which would be included and then maybe another wagon and sell it for the same price . They are you’re getting a premium model and Hornby is not making the loss selling it for cheaper

@@groeacht8525 Gladys Knight Midnight train to Georgia or Ghost Train by Madness
What's next, a Siouxsie and the Banshees branded HST set?
I believe your sayings of "Excrement in model railway form" and "I've had bowel movements that have constituted better value for money than this" certainly apply here!😂
It's hardly the Stiff Tour 1978 train, is it. At least that actually existed.
Good job Bachmann did not produce this tat. Would have looked just as shite with the same with a price tag of £200! 😂
Well done mukka. (I think someone on Hornby's "management" team has a Beatles fetish.)
One of The Beatles, Ringo Starr, was the narrator for the first two seasons of Thomas and friends. Also, over two weeks ago, country singer Toby Keith passed away
Very good with the "so much younger than today" comment haha. I bet I've missed loads of these Easter eggs!
I wouldn't be surprised if Hornby was 'on the skids' trying to make quick cash grabs with product tie-in's like this,
to save their skins.
But nope, this was cheaper to produce and they only put the Beatles on it to add value.
looking at those printed pictures on the locos, its seem to be John, Paul, George, and Spock
I've got a pair of joy division oven gloves, courtesy of half man half biscuit, I use it every day, sadly not dcc fitted!

Again. I'm not a
model rail enthusiast (probably my loss) but with great respect your videos are pure entertainment.
By the way, it will soon be fifty years since ABBA won the Eurovision Contest
😅 👍
That train the Beatles were actually on was pulled by a NBL class 22....over to you Dapol!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
Even if you dont want to put them in a coach, having them on a layout would be cool, just like miniatur wunderland has a lot of curious scenes there
Something I just realized, they reuse the Hornby Thomas chassis again. Around the 1980's (I think) Hornby made an 0-4-0 version of Thomas.
@@gc7820 was that in addition to the clockwork Thomas and the rest of the clockwork range in the 1990s?
I’m not sure why they chose an 0-4-0 faceless Thomas for this “limited edition”pack. Kinda ironic considering that Ringo Starr narrated the first two seasons.
I find it hilarious how they used a Thomas-shaped engine for a Beatles train set which features his first television narrator Ringo Starr.
I like it when he always says welcome back to the railway at the start of his videos
First Hornby did coca cola, then steampunk, and now this, what next a space adventure train pack. I honestly don't know anymore Sam.
Cheers Jasper & Willow
The Hornby diversity hire at hard work in product development.
At least the steampunk thing was actually clever, this and the cokacola lisensing is just awful
I would love a space adventure train pack.
Space, oh no, please, please don’t give Hornby ideas 😭😭
@@Taggart00 We had Battlespace in the 60s - it was brilliant. Woof!
'Slightly innappropriate'...!!😜
I had no idea Hornby still had this mold, It's their first ever thomas model from the early 80's but repainted lol. Ringo did narrate thomas in the 80's so that could be the link.
I am surprised Hornby haven't release Queens Miracle Express used in the music video on the late 80s Queen hit ''Breakthrough''.
Considering they have/had a GWR 28xx loco in their range, i too am surprised thats not been released before now
Since the three serving members of Queen own everything to do with it, it would be impossible for something like that to happen. Brian May and Roger Taylor are very protective of Queen , also anytime they embark on something new they always inform John Deacon who has said no on occasion to things and they haven't gone ahead with it.
@@ThomasJM it would also be to expensive since they had to use a real locomotive and then also put actuall work in it to make it "screen accurate"
and not having an unpaid intern to do the work with the design
Just the tone in the “hello everybody” I knew what I was abt to watch! Hahaha
They should have put the 0-4-0 diesel instead of the steam loco IMO it fits better.
"What Did Sam Waste His Money On Today" sounds like the name of a sitcom about my life.
Metal wheels!! Someone at Hornby missed the opportunity of fitting plastic wheels to save costs there. That would have increased the profit margin 😆😆.
Good timing as Paul McCartney's missing bass was announced as being returned last week!
Having the 0-4-0 E2 Thomas reskin with a Beatles livery is just a homage for classic Thomas
Value:
Loco and stock: £120.
Certificate: less than a £1
Comedy: priceless
Believe they just heard something about som sort of beatlemania!
If they made a Rutles train set I might be interested
Perhaps Rapido could do one 🙂

Thank you, Sam. I now have a terrible craving for an Elvis Lawnmower.

Joy Divison Oven Gloves
@@paulmcwilliam7408 - I was pleasantly surprised to find that somebody has actually made some.👍👍👍
"Time flys by when you're the driver of a train,
speeding out of Trumpton with a cargo of cocaine..."
I get the feeling whoever at Hornby came up with this shite was probably on something too!💩😵💫😁
The Joy Division Oven Gloves were actually an original design on oven gloves which Tesco Homewares sold from about 1980 that coincidentally had a design on them which was like the cover art from Closer. I was briefly amused at the time little thinking that it would lster be a thing of epic proportion.
This is truly one of the train packs of all time.
Oh yes! Ill take one for the team and buy one :)
At Ten years old I had the same wagons on a trainset I got for Christmas, That was 1976.
Just watching the Beatles unboxing. Looks like the black car with the red roof says BEATLESHITS , as the apostrophe is so distorted. LOL.
due to Ringo narrating the first two seasons of the show, I find the fact that that the engine is just a repurposed Thomas weirdly fitting
I'm going to make an Elvis themed lawn mower now.
"Please, please help me" lol very good Sam!
Did it come with the Yoko Ono derailer?
I really need an Elvis lawnmower now so thanks for that.
The shape of the engine is at least somewhat related to the Beatles, if only tangentially
they might as well produce a "paint your own engine set" where they give you an un painted body and you have to paint it.
Paint your wagon, and come along!
'Ave a medal, lad... for doing the review...🎖️
If 'naff' was a model train, it would be this one...that loco is just plain 'avin a larf....
The 0-4-0 is loosely based an a dowlais class D morphed inta a generic mould not the E2
Fun fact: Ringo Star was a narator for Thomas the tank engine, and the engine in this set is a old thomas mold
That mold came out like in 1985
