Do you really think Sam pays that much for a model then scraps it? Mind you if he keeps the creature in his cupboard he may be branching into Hammer territory.
Hi Sam, just a thought: would very much enjoy seeing a video where you choose a good static model train and transform it into a working locomotive model train complete with motor etc.
Thank you for continuing to champion the consumer rights of railway modellers, we need you more than ever these days as some manufacturers seem intent on squeezing as much money out of us as they can. And as for criticism from the likes of RM Web, the nasty individuals who inhabit that dark place (and especially those who run it) do not speak for the majority of us modellers. I gave up on them long ago. Well done keep up the good work, and happy modelling for 2023.
I couldn't agree with you more Howard. RM is a despicable forum. One member on their insulted me using despicable language and rather than reply I took it up with the moderator, which is what you are supposed to on most forums. However the moderator thought that what the guy had said to me was "acceptable". So I sent the Mod a reply back saying that on any other forum that word would have lead to a ban. I didn't realise at the time that the Mod was the main person in charge of RM. I got another message from the forum, but when I tried to log in I was locked out, so I worked out that I had been banned and couldn't read why🤐 I had posted a great deal of information on the site including pictures. But when they ban you it deletes all the threads and comments you make. An odd thing to do as deleting a member who's contributed a great deal of good stuff would be lost. The only posts of mine that survive is the ones were other uses have quoted me, on threads not started by me.
@@graham76man Unfortunately I found RM Web to be increasingly dominated by a number of intolerant, obsessive, self-appointed 'experts' who were only too ready to launch really nasty vitriolic attacks upon anyone who they disagreed with and really suck the joy out of our hobby. Which is where the role of the moderator comes in, unfortunately in my experience, rather than curb the worst excesses of this 'hard core' he is more concerned with defending the reputation of the big model railway manufacturers. I found that any criticism of them, particularly as regards high prices and value for money, are immediately jumped upon and not tolerated. Which is why I really value Sam's Trains for speaking out on such issues.

We all give Hornby a rather hard time these days, and while that may be deserved (and Hornby really need to get there act together before they self destruct), it is interesting that they did not appear on the bottom 5 video at all, so as much as they need to improve not a terrible effort from Hornby this year.
The problem with manufactures are they just keep bringing out the same old models just updated instead of bringing out model that no one has ever brought out before.Pregrouping loco would be nice as there are so many plus they often came under the Big four later on. Keep up the good work and have a good Christmas and a very successful and fun new year

The funny thing is, that Bachmann 4-6-0 used to be used in their old “Black Box” Spectrum line and they were amazing from what I heard. Yes they used the old tooling and cheaper motors. Long story short if you’re looking for a good Bachmann engine look to the early 2000’s Black Box Spectrums.

Great roundup of the bad 'uns - hope the Scrapman enjoyed his dinner! I bought a second-hand Bachmann 2MT tank back in the 90s and it looks like a far better example than your new re-released one. I also more recently picked up an old Bachmann 97xx pannier for £50 at a show - it's a lovely model and a great runner (and has sprung buffers). If Bachmann are going to simply rehash old models less well for huge prices then second-hand seems to be the way to go

I got a Bachmann 64xx for Christmas last year, I really loved it although all I noticed with it is that it struggles to go over points. Never had a look mechanically m.
Hi Sam, I managed to get one of the Bachmann 8750 panniers back in 2020 for about £90 from Rails of Sheffield (I believe the RRP was around £120). The detail seems to be at the same level as the 64xx you've got, the mechanism is identical but the performance is quite a bit better on mine. It's probably one of my favourite locos in my collection. Great video, nice to see the scrapman again!
Personally, I believe Bachmann must be secretly running some sort of illegal dice game or coin-flipping tournament in their factories, because their models are either great quality for the price or absolutely horrid, and the dice seem weighted towards the latter option. Which kinda sucks because if they could lower their costs and perhaps get their product quality to remain consistently positive, they would be an ideal company for newcomers just starting on the model railroading hobby.
I think all of the big makers would be better off if they slashed their prices in half or in some cases even to one third. Sales would shoot way up because people would actually be able to afford their products.

Hey Hello Sam i love your video and i wanted to thanks you alot you helped me alot when i started model train especially the video of the j15 now i love it your the best model train youtuber :D
The Bachmann 4-6-0 was first made in 1998, and the detail was outstanding and It even had a 5 pole motor, but bachmann re-release it in 2014 and well as you can see. Cheers Jasper & Willow
Yes, that was when it was still part of the spectrum line. I have two of them and they have a lot more detail than the current offering. I also think his should have come with a front pilot truck spring and that would have helped immensely with how it ran. 👍🏼
It’s quite the opposite. The 2014 version is a dumbed down version of the older version. I wish you picked up an older version and I think you might change your mind. I have an older version that I upgraded with DCC sound and it does the job.
15:15 "Prized Turd" made me bust out laughing and made my head fell off my shoulders🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Well done Sam! That was am amazing video, keep up the good work old chap!!!
Sam I have a video Idea so you put all the lemons/bad models and put them to the test so like have a race pulling power etc and then feed the worst ones to the scrap man
Sam I thought you were done for a couple weeks for Christmas and New Year. Glad to see you dropped in another video Thanks from across the pond. Just a note if you think BACHMAN is bad there you should see them here n America. I would place them in the category of dog chew toys. If you can find anyone that carries them you will find that 99% of them only run with plastic trucks AND plastic wheel sets on any thing but the engines where they need metal pick up. In 50 years of modeling the ONLY thing I have used BACHMAN cars for is very heavy weathering in junk yard lay outs. I use them because I can not justify the use of my blue box (ATHREN) rolling stock to just junk it. Over the years my Blue Box and MARX equipment has served me well in all scales. I do also use different scales on the same layout just to get depth and separation. My personal favorite is using HO and N scale. HO in the fore ground with N scale in higher mountain layout where I want to make it look like you are looking at ground level and into the high Sierras of Donner Canyon using the N scale at a height of 1 meter and back against the wall to give the appearance of distance. Again thank you for the sarcastic, but funny, review of the worst of '22 and I do have to say the final engine to the crusher was a great choice (if it were me I would have been glad to really crush it even at the price point you paid)
Not yet! I take my break after new years, to return mid-January - got plenty more videos still to come! Thanks for sharing your approach - very interesting stuff! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
It is true, they are not as bad as last year, but it is also true that overall the prices of models, good and bad, have dramatically increased. It's almost like the manufacturers want to price people out of this hobby and make it exclusive for people with a lot of spare money.
They've gone up far and away beyond inflation or RPI Brendan. It's obscene greed and definitely pricing all but the wealthy out of the hobby. When manufacturers cease to charge what the models are worth, but instead charge what they think they can get away with, they're on a slippery slope. In that respect Hornby are the biggest culprits. If these models were built in the UK and supporting UK businesses I would pay a premium, but not one British hand has gone into manufacturing these models. It's very sad where we've got to now.
excellent list sam, i agree with your picks. i think alot of models are rushed most of the time, and well then they end up as model history. cheers sam merry christmas :D
Hi Sam purchased the EFE Hymek D7016 in Full BR Blue. I got it for £104.00 from rails of sheffield. I run it on DCC and it runs very well in slow speed and the lights in my opinion are bright enough.
Remember that tank engine that had a rating of less than 5 out of 10 Sam, Also I told you that that model train would be on this list. Also, Marry Christmas Sam!!
The gandy dancer is a good model for custom 0-4-0s that are very, very small. People like TidmouthThunderbolt and Leokimvideos have made customs using the gandy dancer.
What a shame, I was really looking forward to that E2... Good thing i didnt make the purchase! EDIT: that animatronic (?) that ate the 2MT was horrifying... Have you ever considered doing a short horror film???
Oh no....I have just this evening purchased the efe class 35 hymek...then watched this video arrr, hopefully it might be a slight improvement on my old hornby one, have a great Christmas Sam🎄
I don't think that that Bachman loco deserved to be scrapped. It was still a working model. I sure hope it was just for show and that no loco were harmed during the filming of this episode.
Something I hear all the time Steffen, though as the person actually carrying out these tests, I can assure you that isn't the case, as explained countless times! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Well Sam, I have just two Bachmann's on the way (a Class 40 and a newly tooled Class 47) both with Sound and High Gloss finish ........... And I hope my Christmas will be as good as yours 😁
I find it kinda surprising that Bachmann was responsible for 4/5 of these locomotives, now I will be nice to the ivatt 2mt and say it is nice… to scrap as parts for my custom Bachmann Ho scale Nia. Good video Sam and keep up the good work.
Hi there Sam ,, I hope yuo and your fanmily have a gr8 christmas and a better cheaper New Year for 2023. You certainly are 1 funny dude & i get a good laugh out of your humour and really do appreciate it. So thanks again and hope all goes well for the next year. Cheers from John in Australia.
Surprised about the Class 35. I've had a Heljan 35 since 2010 and it has by FAR the best mechanism of any 00 scale loco I've seen. Smooth at all speed ranges, quiet and powerful. Still runs like brand new with hundreds of hours of running time and only an occasional light oiling for servicing. With the accessory parts applied, it looks fine. I'm assuming they've taken shortcuts in their later EFE version (for example my 2010 release DOES have sprung buffers) and are having issues with quality control now.
Glad yours was good - I suppose things must have moved on a lot in the past 12 years... or perhaps moved backwards in the case of Heljan, because this one was far from impressive! Very surprised to hear the older one has sprung buffers... so they actually downgraded it for the super expensive EFE one? Or they've reverted back to an even earlier design? Absolutely insane! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Turns out after having a look, mine doesn't have sprung buffers. Just assumed it did based on how nice everything else on it is. Nonetheless, still a brilliant model - at least from that release.
Hi Sam, Hope you can hold it together better next year and not have to suffer to many Friday afternoon specials... Merry Chrustmas and Happy New Year to both you and Chloe...
Hey same i think i might have an idea for your Next Best & Worst Model Train video. I think you should do a video of The Best & Worst Model Train of the decade or do a video of your favorite model train of the decade. It's just a thought also great video these videos are my favorite to watch keep up the great work 👍👍😀😀
Want to see a rip off, the bachmann standard 5 costs £194.95 and as far as I can make out its still the same tooling as the 2004 loco. All I can tell is that screw link couplings have been added and painted the cab. And changed the safety valves. I got the body and tender for £12 brand new and then the chassis for just over £40. Much better than the £194 bachmann was charging.
I think your gripes about cab detail are very odd because here in the US we don’t get a lot of that. The diesel cabs tend to be less easily visible inside and so often a simple molded assembly with figures already in is pretty good. Of course, most American steam locomotives have more enclosed cabs than the very open British ones, so it makes sense that American manufacturers tend to skimp out on that kind of detail.
Hello Sam, many years ago when I was a teenager, i usedto have quite a number of loco's manufactured by LIMA. some of the models were very detailed like the BR DELTIC. Are they still manufacturing models?

Therefore we should be given value for money and get what we pay for. You call out the shoddy and overpriced, with humour and integrity. See you in 2023. Bless you 🙏
It's a pleasure David - agreed, value for money should always be a given!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
10:56 you what??
Officer bowls
I always love these videos! Always great fun to bring shame and punishment upon a reputable company
Hey Hello Sam i love your video and i wanted to thanks you alot you helped me alot when i started model train especially the video of the j15 now i love it your the best model train youtuber :D
That's a pleasure my friend - I'm so glad to hear that!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The scrap man is a thing of nightmares. I'm not sure how I'll sleep tonight now that poor model has met its end!
Merry Christmas and a good and healthy 2023 for you and your family! Cheers Onno.
Remember leokimvideo modifiyng the Gandy Dancer into little thomas'
Informative and hilarious. With your comments and back round sound effects I laughed almost to the verge of pooping my pants. Capital job!
Interesting - I'm surprised it dates back that far - is that really the same tooling as the 1998 one??
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains no not really
It’s quite the opposite. The 2014 version is a dumbed down version of the older version. I wish you picked up an older version and I think you might change your mind. I have an older version that I upgraded with DCC sound and it does the job.
15:15 "Prized Turd" made me bust out laughing and made my head fell off my shoulders🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Well done Sam! That was am amazing video, keep up the good work old chap!!!
This is the first time I actually seen the scrap man sing, wearing Christmas stuff, and eating an engine.
Easily the most entertaining thing you've made, Sam! Bravo! 🤣
hahaha thanks a lot Jonathan, glad you liked it!! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The number 4 loco looks like duck from Thomas and friends

Sam: Not farting sounds
*13 seconds later…*
Bachmann Baldwin: *farts*
I just love the creative punishments, also happy holidays!
Well done Sam. Happy Christmas to you and yours. Have a great Christmas holiday and a Happy New Year.
The best and worst locomotives of the year are some of my favourite videos from you
haha thank you!! Hope you enjoy both :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I've bought one of those Bachmann Ivatt Tank Engines last year and it kept Derailing whenever I ran it.
What a riot! Happy seasonal time to you, Sam!
excellent list sam, i agree with your picks. i think alot of models are rushed most of the time, and well then they end up as model history. cheers sam merry christmas :D
Thank you for the comment!! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Hi Sam purchased the EFE Hymek D7016 in Full BR Blue. I got it for £104.00 from rails of sheffield. I run it on DCC and it runs very well in slow speed and the lights in my opinion are bright enough.
Yeah but Sam wants to run it on his carpet 1st radius settrack with a Hornby controller.
When I saw that intro I thought all holiday spirit was gone but I was so wrong! Merry Christmas
Scrap Man! (not who I thought would be in the spirit!)
I love how chaotic the punishments are and how they're all reasonable
From my season to your season I wish you a happy holiday season - filled with gobs of seasonings.
Been waiting for this video all year haha keep up the good work sam 😎
Remember that tank engine that had a rating of less than 5 out of 10 Sam, Also I told you that that model train would be on this list.
Also, Marry Christmas Sam!!
haha absolutely Jake - thanks for the comment!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Will the 2MT be returning?
Also loved the Santa cameo hahaha wonderful video
I'm sorry, but Arthur won't be coming back anytime soon.
The gandy dancer is a good model for custom 0-4-0s that are very, very small.
People like TidmouthThunderbolt and Leokimvideos have made customs using the gandy dancer.
Never buy bachmann got it
That Intro tho….
The OhHhHhHhH!
Had me Dying! 😂😂
hahaha! Apologies for your premature death ;)
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Oh its Fine! 😉
Do not blame the engines, mostly it is your poor trackwork causing the problems.
Something I hear all the time Steffen, though as the person actually carrying out these tests, I can assure you that isn't the case, as explained countless times!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
LOL you must have made your throat as sore as mine is with that Jingle bells hahahah Happy Christmas
Lol!
"I've got my *BALLS* on the floor." -Sam's Trains 2022
I actually have the UP version of the 4-6-0. my main issue is the fact that the wires and tender drawbar are clashing with each other.
Sam…you’re bonkers lad. Nerdtastic! Keep up the good work. Have a good Christmas. God bless
Train: derails.
Sam: unhappy
Also sam: runs models on the floor.
Hey Sam this is something that I always await at the end of the year always worth it
Thank you for a very entertaining video, and have yourself a merry little Christmas
Merry Christmas, Sam!
Merry Christmas!! :D
The “good evening RM Web” cracked me up 🤣
Surprised about the Class 35.
4:28 Hilarious, excellent video thank you Sam!
Very funny. Merry Christmas Sam!
Sam, any chance of you getting the TT120 stuff?
Yes! I'll be covering most of it :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Bachmann: Worst excretion engine 2MT. Heljan designers: Hold our beers!
Hi Sam,
Hope you can hold it together better next year and not have to suffer to many Friday afternoon specials...
Merry Chrustmas and Happy New Year to both you and Chloe...
Hahaha! Loved it. Well done Sam keep up the great reviews and have a great Christmas and New Year.
great video sam! merry Xmas!
Thank you!! Merry Christmas :D
Much better than the £194 bachmann was charging.
haha that is crazy - I'd love to cover that and expose it... but I'd also rather keep the £200 ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
2022 has passed so fast. I remember watching the 2021 version like it was yesterday.
What about the Hornby SECR Thomas reskin?
Some of these trains remind me of Thomas characters
While you’re having a fun
“seasonal time”, also have a Fantastically Wonderful Merry Christmas filled with Awesomeness. Cheers 🎄
