- I recently spent a few weeks creating a fun new Flappy Bird style game for vintage 68K Macintosh computers. In this video I show you what I've been working on!

Limited Floppy Disk Source Release:

I put up a few more copies of the source code release for this video, but I really underestimated the interest in this project and the disks sold out quickly. I will try to put some more up soon!
😭
That's good news though!! Awesome stuff mate
How much were you selling them for?
Are you still planning on putting up more of these floppies for sale?
@@888cromartie Yes, for a little longer but they are still selling out. I will have more later this week / weekend.
You’re making games for Classic Mac hardware? Nice! I want to purchase a signed copy!
It’s great to see our beloved 68k friends getting some love! 🥰
The game looks sweet; Case Detail is 5 Star!
Love the "Tim the Tool-Man Taylor" Sound Effects!
Awesome, Jared! I’m happy you’re really learning C! Congrats on the new game!
Love this game! How far you've come, Jared.
Hi I just saw your video over on Action Retro. I'm a profession developer with 20+ years experience, mainly on Windows but I started on Mac and I'm familar with all the tools you used (MinvMac, Think C etc). Just wanted to say that if you were ever interested in collaborating on a classic programming project, I would be very interested. I made lots of games and other software back in the day but it was pre-internet. I really want to get back into the retro tech - I recently restored a rare PowerBook 100 to working condition.
so excited to have a chance to buy a new game for a compact mac after ALL THAT INTERMINABLE WAIT
Good. I like the graphics
Man, I can't believe I missed getting a physical copy already! This video came out right after my lunch break and I couldn't watch it until I got out of work
Just found this. Very cool man very cool. Keep it up
Other than this, the only new game for classic Macs I can think of is The Queen's Footsteps, a World Builder style adventure game made in 2020. There is a demo up in Macintosh Garden, and the full game can be bought on Itch. It's not an exclusive game though, it has version for pretty much every single late 80's personal computer out there.
Looks awesome man!!
I like the disk case. Very sharp design that's true to the look of the game, complete with the splash of color on the back. Making more physical copies may be impractical, but would you consider providing a downloadable disk image with the game + source and/or a PDF of the cover art (by donation)?
dang they sold out XD, oh well ill download it and try it out when I have my Macs up and running at my new place. I can even run it on the SuperMac yay
Gotta say man, lovely work! Now I wanna make a Mac game too!
Not related, but will you make a video on your main channel showing how you make all those glitchy game genie codes? It would take me weeks to make that many good ones!
Also this game is freakin’ great
it'd be cool if the background would scroll too
-and the character would rotate ;P
Amazing accomplishment. Thanks so much for putting this out into the world, and glad you had such a fun time working on it.
Thank you for checking it out! 😁
the controls do seem a bit sensitive
I forgot to ask before but what LCD monitor do you use with your PowerBook? I’m struggling to find one.
Hey, that's really cool. Great job! I would love to make a Sierra style point and click game based off one me and my ex wife wrote. Any beginner steps/tips to get me started if I ever get ambitious and finally port this drawer full of binders into a playable game?
Make a prototype to see if it's a fun idea and to see if you have the passion to put in hundreds or thousands of hours into the full project.
@@insanelygruz Right lol. What's crazy is it's already a mostly completed game (characters, story, puzzles, dialog, etc.), but that's only half the battle lol. I've made sections of it in RPG Maker because it's pretty simple to manipulate and customize. But, I've always had a love for the Mac, so I just wonder how difficult it is for someone with limited programming experience to grasp the development tools you used
@@4Legacy That's awesome! If it's that far along I can see why you'd want to make it happen. For this project I used the C programming language and a library called Sprite Animation Toolkit, which handles drawing of sprites to the screen, collision detection, and Sound Manager calls. SAT eliminates a lot of the most tedious aspects of programming sprite-based games on the classic Mac, but it still is going to be much more difficult than modern tools like RPG maker. There is so much to learn about the Macintosh Toolbox and how programs work on the Mac - it's not incredibly difficult but it is incredibly time consuming. You also need to be very conscious of memory usage and how much disk space you use. (Flappy Mac is only 450KB, proud of that!)
My honest opinion is that you should create it in whatever tool is easiest for you first, then if you're still interested port it to the classic Mac next.
@@insanelygruz thanks for the info... and the confidence boost! I'm actually working on putting out a solo music album coming in the spring (my first one in 7 years, and a huge personal test of goal setting and following through on a big project)..... But, once I'm done with all that, I'm hoping those game binders call my name next and I can get another unfinished life project off my plate lol.
Keep up the great work btw. Love your videos, from the Mac stuff to your game genie corruption
Will this work on the color classic ?
Is it compatible with Game Genie? :P
Very cool stuff, I’d like to see we’re can we get some help to try and develop our own Mac games in C, I am already a developer on modern day OS X/macOS, I’d like to make something for classic os too
The best book that I've found was "Tricks of the Mac Game Programming Gurus" written by some of the best Mac game developers back in 1995! It was an amazing book that taught me so much...
@@insanelygruz thank you, I have also found a very cool project made by one of the guys involved with swift compiler development which is a swift compiler for ppc on classic mac os
