  • The Macintosh SE/30, one of the best compact Macs Apple ever made. Unfortunately it's very common for these machines to succumb to catastrophic battery failure. Fortunately there is a cure for that now!

    What a treat of a video! Didn't know someone made this board! outstanding job, and huge kudos for making it open source.

    Loved this video! I have a spare SE/30 board that has deep trace damage from capacitor leakage and time. A guy in Dallas a couple of years ago did a ton of professional work on it recapping it and rebuilding traces trying to bring it back to life but he finally had to call it. Now that this PCB product is available, I’ve sent the board to CayMac and he’s going to transplant everything over to a new board on his stream in the next couple of months. I can’t wait to see part two of this video!

    I bought an SE on eBay earlier this year. It's fun to have old Macs around. But man, I've got to give you major bonus points for tackling this project. I've done a little bit of soldering before, but I don't know if I would have the patience to do something like this!

    Wow, what a project.
    BTW, I always enjoy your self-deprecating sense of humor. 😁

    This is a super cool project. It's super satisfying to watch you populate the new board. Are there any fun upgrades or mods you going to add?

    Great video! The SE/30 is a wonderful beast. I have one. While it didn't have battery damage, I did need to do a lot of work cleaning and recapping it after all the SMD caps dumped their guts.

    After witnessing the aftermath of that battery explosion, I lost interest in collecting an SE/30. You're doing a good job going forward. Best of luck with your restoration!

    This was so fun to watch. I love your channel. I never get bored. Also thanks so much for teaching me to do smd soldering, I’m going to need it for my upcoming 7100/66 recap.

    Could you add links of the threads you referenced for parts and such? Maybe going over ordering parts and the new mobo would be a good video idea.

    Nice job. The only examples of battery bombed compacts I have are so bad the legs have been eaten off of several ICs, so there's not a ton of hope in saving them without a large cache of spare chips. Luckily most of them (except for the '882) are just the RPs and F258s so if I really wanted a project, I've got one ready. Now if only the Classic would get enough love for a repro board.
    Also you'll probably want to recap or replace the PS in these. They tend to get a little leaky and can cause some intermittent problems.

      Yeah, I got lucky with all of the PLCCs. I forwent mentioning it in the video, but the CPU actually had to be replaced in my case though, due to some severly corroded legs. Fortunately ‘030s are plentiful on eBay!
      As for the Classic, there actually is a project for that one too: github.com/kr239/Macintosh-Classic-Reloaded

    why didn't you socket the motherboard for the chips that could be sockets such as the CPU and FPU?

    Hi, interesting video. Do you know where to find the 2 "Sony" chips if you had to change them? They're rebranded Apple, but I'm talking about the 2 sound chips...?

    As someone who repairs these, great work. I built one and hated every moment. Solder refused to flow properly even with my high end flux. Looks like one of the 253s may have a bad connection? But yeah, those FB got me the first time too =)

    • @OddObsolete
      @OddObsolete  Рік тому

      Yeah, I noticed those pads were not eager to accept solder! Maybe going over them with a glass fiber pen first would make it better.

  • @minty_Joe

    What? No chip sockets for the PLCCs, ROMs and IWM? I would have.

    • @OddObsolete
      @OddObsolete  Рік тому +1

      I don’t intend to ever move them, and sockets can be a source of hard to debug contact issues. Especially PLCC!

    • @minty_Joe
      @minty_Joe Рік тому

      @@OddObsolete My only reason would be to prevent corrosion from reaching the chip's legs should a cap or battery burst again. It just makes removal of the chips much easier. But if I do that, I might as well do sockets for EVERY part that looks like a chip.

    Hi, I have an SE/30 in very similar shape as yours was. I'd seen some posts about that replica, but not seen solid proof that it worked without compromise. This looked 100% compatible! (let me know if there's any tradeoffs you've discovered).
    But mainly, now having seen this I'm going to take the same approach. Are you willing to sell one of the spare boards to me?

    • @OddObsolete
      @OddObsolete  Рік тому

      Yeah, I haven’t noticed any issues with compatibility. All the parts that were salvageable from the old board fit just fine, and as far as I can tell everything works as expected.
      I can sell one, but shipping from Sweden to USA is like $40 at least, so the cheapest option for you would probably be to find some other people in your area whom are also interested, and then split the shipping cost on a new order from JLPCB. Also, I ordered my boards back in March, and there have been some updates since then, although mainly to the BOM-files I think, but you may want to check that you’re not missing out on any improvements made since these were manufactured. They’re revision 03.
      But with that said, if you’re still interested, drop a mail to the address on my About page, or DM on Twitter @OddObsolete :)
