The AWD issue is one of the main reasons I’m leaning towards the Land Cruiser and not the 4R. I live in Canada where it snows 50% of the year, constant AWD while I’m cornering in the back roads is crucial for me.

It's an absolute deal breaker for me, living in Western New York. It took the Tundra off my shopping list when I was looking to replace my F150. I ended up going with another F150, which itself has this problem for XL and XLT. My Lariat has it, but if it didn't, the Ford would also be off the list. GM, as Roman mentioned, has it in everything. So odd. And now the Land Cruiser gets it in all trims...

Roman and Andre, You are 1,000% correct about full-time 4WD. Toyota has been making highly reliable, full-time 4WD SUVs for decades and decades and every 4Runner should have it.
With SUVs of this heft, the fuel efficiency gains of running in RWD are negligible. Having continued with a manual transmission for the new Tacoma, I am disappointed the 4Runner did not bother to offer a manual option as Bronco and Wrangler do. 🤨 All in all the new 4Runner has been modernized in a generally cautious manner. Let's hope Toyota's new compact 'FJ Cruiser' meets the necessary standards to be sold in the USA and Canada as that really would be an innovation for our 4x4 market. 🤞🤞 As stated, the 4Runner seems much tighter inside than the new Land Cruiser which also has full-time 4X4. Finally, we really appreciate the insights about the unequal access provided by Toyota to various outlets. No bueno!!

Or at least the switch to go to AWD when you want to. The most off road versions not having it while the most on road mall crawler does is ridiculous. No way I’m buying a trail hunter or trd off road without a switch for AWD. What a waste.

completely agree! my 2020 Sequoia has AWD when I switch to 4H with a Center Diff lock option in the transfer case(similar to the LandCruiser). I think all Toyota trucks and SUVs should come with that option. I love that feature on my Sequoia. I'm constantly getting calls from dealers to upgrade to the new Sequoia. No thank you

100% agree. This is one reason I dont really care for the new Tundra/Sequoia/Tacoma/4Runner. Toyota had/has arguably the best full-time system out there and chooses not to use it in most applications. I had a GX460 and now an LX570 with the torsen center case and it is awesome. I use 4Lo with the center diff unlocked to move my trailer around all the time. And even offroad, I will often run in 4Lo unlocked as its good enough to get through most anything unless its really hairy.
While the 4Auto system in Fords and GM's are probably not quite as good, at least they have it because it is better than nothing at all.

My Ram 1500 has a switch for AWD and I use it when it’s raining, the occasional ice storm, and driving down gravel roads. It’s amazing. If the rear wheels slip, the fronts engage. No crabbing, can drive on dry pavement all day long if you want. For most American vehicles, this is the way to go. You don’t need AWD most the time. But when you do, you really do!

  • @LivingRetirement

Automatic 4WD or AWD is a must. I had a 3rd generation 4Runner for 18+ years, and that meant always switching on and off the 4WD during winter driving in Wisconsin. And hoping that the 4WD would go into 2WD quick enough to avoid the truck eating the tires.

THANK YOU ROMAN for bringing up the 4WD AUTO issue. I believe that Toyota (and ALL manufacturers) NEED to incorporate this into their systems. This will prevent me from buying a 4runner trim that I like...... or a 4runner at all. I would also like you guys to do an episode of when (at what speed) the 4H turns off. This is something a LOT of people do not know.

Totally agree, I think manufacturers overlook how many people live in climates with nasty weather and inconsistent bad road conditions. Full-time 4WD or AWD isn’t just for people who want luxo-trims and can’t be bothered to learn what the dial does. 95% of the reason I care about 4WD/AWD at all is for ON-road driving condtions.
I don't want to go back to hovering over a 4H selector all winter like I did for years (switched to a Subaru), but even if I did I'm not going to convince the wife to do the same.

I think TFL buying a 4Runner, or one of the presenters buying it as a personal vehicle makes a lot of sense for the channel. The current gen still sells in huge numbers and the new gen has garned a lot of excitement. People want to see these vehicles used properly and modified as many owners will plan to do. A press vehicle can't fill in those roles.
To differentiate it from your Tacoma Blueberry, I think a long term test of a hybrid version would be so helpful to consumers. If price is a concern, maybe a more base model SR5 would be a good data point for the capability 4Runner provides at the starting price point.

I totally understand the importance of reliability, I’ve owned cars into the 170K to 220K mile range however there gets to a time where it’s just old. The new gen looks promising but I’m glad you brought up the auto 4WD. I think that’s why they’ll continue losing customers to other models. Most people don’t want to switch or mess around with that when there’s plenty of AWD cars out there that’ll do the everyday stuff.

People care about about reliability more than having more speeds. And the thing is, more speeds means nothing with a box on wheels like a 4runner, a bronco, or a wrangler, they will always get horrible gas mileage because of aerodynamics. And when you put a turbo in a 4runner you are just asking for increased maintenance and issues down the road. All 4runners will be more expensive to own moving forward, not something people are looking forward to.

Sometimes they are such dopes about things. Chances are even with awd your wife would have lost control on black ice. GM wasnt using awd in their 4 auto feature back in the 90s and 00s either. They just slammed themselves into 4x4 when they detected the rear wheels slipping - it was neither quick to engage or seemless and if it sayed in 4x4 would crab. They also only go into 4x4 for a few seconds before disengaging. Ie if you are in auto and are pulling away from a slippery intersection the rear will spin, 4x4 will lock and the truck will drive forward for a few feet, 4x4 will disengage, the rear will spin again, 4x4 will lock again and 2nd time for a longer duration before disengaging. If you spun the rear while moving in auto4x4 - chances arw you are doing that 180 or 360 before the front even engages! Modern versions are nothing like that and use clutch based center diffs that van vary front to rear torque split and often start engaged from a stop and disengage when steady cruising and are seemless - you never feel them kick on/off.

    • @Christian-Berger
      @Christian-Berger 5 місяців тому

No, definitely not. Something they didn't make clear to those that don't know is that full-time 4WD or AWD is not that same as a part time 4WD transfer case. Full-time vehicles MUST have a center differential to allow for turning on road without bind whereas a part time has no differential. When you go from 2WD to 4WD you will get a 50/50 power split. for a full-time vehicle to do the same it would need a locking center differential.
Now, even with a locked center diff or part time driving in 4WD the bind isn't nearly as bad as some would claim due to the fact that toyotas are IFS(individual front suspension) and use CV (constant velocity[full turn with no bind]) joints instead of U(universal) joints.
In short full-time/ AWD have 3 differentials(front, center, rear) that allow every wheel to be traveling at a different speed while technically still receiving power.
The whole reason there is a claim that you have to change all tires is because you could "technically" introduce bind due to the potential difference in diameter from an old worn tire to a new tire.

I'd it's me and is be spending my money is yet the lower end trd model or an sr5 and not spend the 20k more, then go to companies like mudify or 4 wheel parts .comand get a suspension system of your choice for les then the additional cost of the trail hunter and plus if you want rims and tires it just tires and slowly upgrade it as you see fit and can afford it! Since the 4 runner runs the old style drive train swapping out the gears will help allot! So me I wouldn't spend the extra on the tail hunter unless I want to keep up with the Joneses! Or I have to be that guy or girl that has to have the newest most expensive 4wd in the neighborhood!
But my biggest gripe is one that right now I think Toyota may be shooting themselves in the foot by putting so many SUVs in the exact price category so I didn't think Toyota did there research

But, the dealer is wrong to tell you to turn it off. A part-time system needs to be turned off on dry pavement, a Torsen diff AWD system does not. In-fact, most AWD systems cannot be switched off.

Some of us want a vehicle that has just enough creature comforts to make long drives tolerable while being simple enough to be able to work on in the driveway without an electrical engineering masters' degree.
