I am no expert but I believe to properly store champagne (and wine?) it is supposed to be stored with the top angled down so the cork always stays wet. This allows the cork to stay expanded not allowing any of the...gas(?) to escape preventing it from going flat. It also needs to stay cooled which you are already doing.

I learned this from an episode of Pawn Stars where a guy had a 100 year old bottle of champagne. They brought in a pro and, due to improper storage, the authentic bottle was worth nothing.
