The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

She was one of the biggest stars in Vaudeville in the early 1900's through the 1920's.

Sophie Tucker is probably not very well known to most people today, but she was an absolute entertainment legend, who successfully worked in every facet of show business during the 20th Century. Vaudeville, early radio, movies, concerts/club appearances, and television as well. She was not physically well here during this Sullivan Show (Sophie would pass on in February 1966) but she still rose to the occasion, with all she had learned during her many decades long career. In April 1963, a Broadway musical called "Sophie" opened, based on her young life (the music was both written, and the play produced by Steve Allen). Unfortunately, the show opened to mixed reviews and closed after eight performances (the role of Sophie Tucker was played by actress Libi Staiger). In any event (about 25 years ago) I was able to collect a pristine copy this show's opening night playbill - signed by Steven Allen, along with all major cast members - and Sophie herself (she was present on that opening night). In the newspaper reviews, the following day, one critic stated that Sophie could have "saved" the musical by marching down (from her "balcony perch") and onto the stage, taking over the title role. A great tribute! (I am sure Libi was wonderful - no knock against her).

The legendary Sophie Tucker made quite a few appearances on the Sullivan show. As with most of her segments, she was given quite a bit of time and would perform several songs telling a story. This is part of a performance in which she also included "My Melancholy Baby," "After You've Gone," "Charlie McCoy," "Toot Toot Tootsie, Goodbye" and her signature song with which she ended most performances; "Some of these Days."
This episode was also notable for featuring the first appearance by Gary Lewis and the Playboys which can also be viewed on this channel.

The group bowed in unison at the end of the second song, ‘She Loves You’, after which McCartney made a nervous joke about Sophie Tucker being their “favourite American group”. They followed this with a performance of ‘Till There Was You’.

I wonder if the first generation master tape of this episode wasn't available to edit for this post. Sophie's segment looks like tape on tape on tape!😂

A great voice? Not really, and certainly no beauty. But, lordy, how she commands a stage! There's a marvelous clip of her doing "I Remember It Well" with Maurice Chevalier, just magic.

@@punkinhoot I love it when commenters point a criticism back at the poster. If someone says something bad about Hitler, then someone might reply, "You couldn't start a world war."
