    In this episode, we check out the new USB3 Apple Lightning to Camera Adapter, hooked up to a powered USB3 Hub, which in turn is connected to the RME Babyface, full keyboard and USB3 CF card reader with no issues.
    I'm using Garageband to show how you can work with 2 instruments at once so you can be more inspired when you can switch quickly without having to mess about every time you want a change!

    Finally. I watched some instructions videos on doing this and they talked about a powered lightning adapter but all I could find was a “camera” connector and that threw me off completely. I couldn’t get an answer anywhere , if this was what they were using. Thanks! Going to buy one right now

    Hello Adam - really useful video, well explained and demonstrated. I wanted to connect a Korg Kronos to the new Korg Kronos remote app on my iPad Pro. I didn't get how to do it as the Kronos uses the USB B port to connect for midi and now I have seen your video I can use the Apple USB3 Lightening to Camera Adapter, power the iPad using another Lightening power cable and use a USB B to USB A cable to connect the Kronos to the iPad. Before I watched your video I spent a long time wondering what connector I needed and trawling through the endless connection options at the Apple Store website. I agree with you and think maybe Apple are missing a trick in the fact that they push this connector for Photography, and yes it is superb for that use, but there are many Musicians out there who have been waiting for this and probably don't realise it's available and how essential it is to them. One last thing I would add is that it's not cheap but the trade off is that it works!!! Other cheaper imports may not, this being Apple you know will be Quality. Thank you Adam for solving the mystery of Apple, USB and connecting to Music devices. 🎹🎹🎹 😀👍

    Very informative, and certainly solves the eternal power problem. However, same as other brand products...why do they make the cable from the unit so short...it’s never good to have anything dangling in the air putting strain on the socket...wouldn’t take much to make the cable few inches longer so it could sit supported on desk..

    Great videos! (reviving the threads I suppose) ... So this is almost exactly the setup I want for home Voice Over work, but I really don't want to use Garageband. ... Would this setup work with Reaper, if I ran Reaper on my Mac and shared it to the iPad using a software/app like Duet Display (which you talked about in part 1 of this series)?
    ANY help about the myriad of connections would be amazing.

  • @Oleg__

    That's really interesting video! And this new small thing (Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter) looks much more important, than someone would think at first glance. Do I understand it right, that now, thanks to this new small thing, you can connect to iPad _any_ USB Audio interface? And if so, maybe here is another benefit: if in this case USB audio interface will take power from iPad, then it will be better for audiosignal, than in case, when you connect power adapter of the audio interface directly to the electrical socket?
    *Upd:* ah… no, I see you talked about this shame at 2:30. So, probably that means I still have to look for interfaces, which compatible with iPad? But you are using RME Babyface, I doubt that manufacturer declared compatibility with iPad in this model. I have a mess in my head…
    So, the only benefit is you can charge an iPad during work in studio?

    Hi Adam, I'm enjoying this iPad series a lot, thanks! Just wondering if you have any noticeable latency with the Apogee Jam or your Baby Face? I have just bought the iRig HD and I've noticed that the GarageBand amps have latency that I can hear. I downloaded JamUp and this has a low-latency option which helps a lot, but the iPad is still not as good as my 8 year old Roland Cube modelling amp for latency.

    I just sent away for the Audient id4 which only gets its power vis the USB so this will be how I run my set up as well. Thanks for the vid. It would be nice to see a vid that compares the Apple camera adapter with a cheaper chinese knock off to see if they both do the same thing. I doubt there's any circuitry inside but with Apple who knows?

    • @adamsteelproducer
      @adamsteelproducer  7 років тому +1

      +ben dunn there's a lot of circuitry inside, I've seen a tear down. I wouldn't touch an iPad with a Chinese knockoff since a lot of voltage goes through it- and that's the one thing where I won't skimp on money

    Is iOS Garageband accurate and good enough for composing more complex tunes? I notice that when using the on-screen touchscreen keyboard, I find it hard to be accurate with playing the notes on iOS Garageband. I'm curious if this gets improved when using a USB MIDI keyboard.

This is so amazing that I have now heard Apple will officially open a new special department to sell all kinds of shorty, whitey, little silly adapters to all of us consumers! I have the UD-BT01which is made by Yamaha which is a Bluetooth interface, it cost me about $79.00. I use it with an iPad 4, would also work with iPad 3 but not earlier, the Bluetooth is different on iPad 2. I have a Bluetooth typing keyboard should I need it and it works hooked up at the same time. The UD-BT01 is recognized by GarageBand, Steinberg Cubasis, AudioBus, iGrand and iElectric by IK Multimedia. All this keeps me pretty busy. I have two Yamaha keyboards: DGX-660 which stays at home and the NP-12 Piagerro for travel. And I can email what I record to my Mac Pro. One can actually have two UD-BT01 or more in use as you can give them unique names. I use one device for both my keyboards as I don't use them as you do stacked as if for a church organ dual keyboard.
    Yes, I like your setup. The iPad Pro is too expensive right now for me.

    Hmmm? But if your iPad is connected to the active USB Hub, well yo do not need the other lightning input, cause the iPad get current trough the Hub like the the other devices... Or am I missing something? So the "older" adapter would be OK.

      +Antonio Siena hi Antonio, yes that's right. The hub is an option if you don't have an interface with a separate power supply, or if you want to connect more than one thing but it's not necessary

    Good videos, just a little update. When I bought my Apple usb 3.0 adapter it had a firmware update from the iPad Pro V2. I did some tests to see what the firmware changed and it now powers more through the USB. I was able to power external USB hard drives, SSD drives and memory keys that usually say it need more power. But you need to use a 12 Watts USB A or 29 watt USB C power supply. It might give the power error at first, then does a fast reboot and switches some of the power over to the USB port and the error goes away and it works. So no more powered hub. Identify know if this is only for the pro version 2, I think it’s the same for iPad Pro version 1 since they use the same lighting and usb chip, along with iPhine 8, the 8 plus and the iPhine X.

    It's basically a laptop where every part is an external dongle. Why not just use a laptop? There's both more and better apps for Win/OSX than on iOS. It's a sincere question. I'm too constantly checking new audio software on iOS. Trying to incorporate it into my setup. But every time I come to the conclusion that a laptop ain't much bigger than the iPad, is more powerful, got more software. Doesn't have all it's part hanging around, but is all in the same box (except for a quality audio interface).

      Excellent point! Just what I have been saying! Just get a laptop, and call it a day! I use a MacBook Air. I can transfer the MIDI files to my 27" if I want to for a bigger screen. All without dinking around on a small screen with yet another interface (the iPad) to contend with...

      The iPad Pro is an amazing iPad for video editing using iMovie and any other video editor o photo editor like photoshop and I will do your jobs faster on the go but I prefer my laptop (MacBook) to do all the stuff. You can buy the IPad Pro (the cheaper one and you can buy usb reader o lightning to usb 3 storage devices to compensate the storage if the iPad

    • @adamsteelproducer
      @adamsteelproducer  6 років тому

      +tronlady1 the XR18 is not a USB interface and never has been. All you can do with its USB port is record to a usb stick (2 channel only). I’m not aware of any other functions, I’ve got an XR12 that’s the same. The X32 works as an interface, but as for the XR18 you’ll have to read the manual to see if it’s possible with any computer, let alone an iPad.

    • @tronlady1
      @tronlady1 6 років тому

      With all due respect sir.....the xr18 IS a multichannel audio interface and this is demoed on the behringer video's. However, they are using an older iPad with a 30pin to usb CCK. This also, didn't work for me :o( The XR18 and x18 are different to the other models in that they CAN record multichannel audio....supposedly anyway! It's proper doin me bulb in!!

    Great video, that's why I was watching it several times already. Your videos about iPad Pro in Audio Production context have the biggest amount of views on your channel.
    0:55 - But I don't quite understand, why all this thanks to this new cable connector. You could connect your *powered* usb hub to previous "camera" connector as well. You told that iPad's battery starts to drain. But you use USB hub, which has its *own power supply*, and it supplies all connected devices… That's why I thought that it shouldn't be much power consumption pressure for iPad. I just would like to better understand, how all this works (I never had iPad, going to get second gen. 12.9" when it will be announced in March).
    Another thing which makes me wonder. You connected typing keyboard as well. But does iPad allow to connect and successfuly use regular typing keyboard with iOS? And the same wonder about connected compact flash reader. Before I thought that iOS doesn't allow to read data from card readers. Only, if you installed special app beforehand from flash drive's manufacturer.

    • @Oleg__
      @Oleg__ 7 років тому +2

      ***** OK, thank you for clarification! I understand now.
      I think, with powered USB hub it's possible to use practically any USB audio interface. Some interfaces can't work with iPad, because they have only one USB port for data and power. No DC port for adapter, no batteries etc. Thus they can be used only with laptops/desktops to take power from them. Connecting those interfaces directly to iPad (without using power hub) through USB-cable is not possble, because they will not be power supplied from the iPad. But using powered hub connected to iPad's "Camera" adapter, will make it possible, because in this case audio interface will take power from that powered USB hub (so, data and power transfer will be provided through one powered USB hub and one USB-cable of the interface, like when they connected to laptop). I hope I get it right. And hence there are two good news from this video: Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter and idea with powered USB hub, which is also important for me, because I'm looking for audio interface, which will work with iPad, and this idea with powered USB hub can make my options much wider.
      About new Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter I have understood it earlier, that its advantage is in continued iPad charging and working with it at the same time with other devices connected to it (and that's really great). I just thought, that using powered hub, iPad's power shouldn't drain fast even without this Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter, because connected devices will take power from powered USB hub insted of iPad, and they shouldn't eat iPad's power with any type of "Camera" adapter (I mean if iPad is not connected to charger). But if you would use passive USB hub (not powered), then yes, probably iPad's power will start to drain faster, and having Lightning to USB 3 adapter becomes more critical (to keep it charged). The point is before I didn't know (didn't think) about powered (active) USB hubs (because most hubs on the market are passive, not powered), and now I see this is good solution too. That's why this video was twice helpful for me, for two reasons: now I know about Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter (will get it), and idea with *powered* USB hubs.
      Sorry for long text and not perfect English.

    Hi Adam, Thanks for uploading but truth is the USB3 camera adaptor is very disappointing. The frequency noise it does when you plug in the power supply on the lightning socket is terrible. Makes it unusable for recordings while charging. I returned it for a refund. Cheers \m/

      Tks for your feedback. Hmm... I used an Apogee Jam that works flawless with a non-powered adaptor. I thought about a ground loop but the Apple power supply having no ground pin, I dont see how I could isolate it, as opposed to my amps that work just fine i the same environement...

      I use an Apogee Jam also ( 96k ) and an Apogee Mic for when Im mobile, when Im at home I use an Apogee Duet for Mac/Ipad, no noise what so ever and charges the Ipad, as well as let you use a usb midi keyboard. One could say the Duet is a little pricey but imo its worth it, I use it for my Ipad and my MacBook Pro. I think Apogee really gets it when it comes to IOS audio production.
