Thank you so much! Your videos are always so interesting and well explained. There are so many people spreading misinformation about audio engineering online and I know I can trust you to always tell the truth and show how multifaceted some issues are. I'm mostly in live sound but have been getting back into recording work recently and your videos have helped me learn and re-learn so much. Really appreciate you, Adam!
Well Done Nice explanation I am Running A Big Ben For My Master Clock To My Wave's BCL & Tascam us20 x 20 interface & RME Ufx+ And The Audio Is Spot On
THANK YOU for making this video! Extremely informative, you were to the point and didn't rant or go on any tangents in between talking about the only thing I came here to learn about... Funkin'Finally! It took so long, but now I'm figuring out everything I need and how it all works together so I can Freestyle live using all my MIDI devices at once... Or how I see funkin' fit. I even have a vintage SONUS MT-70 (i.e. 2 MIDI ins... and eight MIDI outs, wopp-woop!). Jam on, man! Edit: Oh yeah... Subbed!
I have some understanding of this topic and you have helped so very much. I’ve been trying to explain this (poorly) to audio enthusiast friends of mine and their eyes tend to glaze over. I’ve subscribed and look forward to reviewing your old and new videos. Thanks again.
Word clock is very useful but quite old tech. My Yamaha 02R is the master clock for my 2x Motu 828 mk2’s which handle 16 channels of 16 bit digital into Logic/computer. I also have and Akai S5000 which is also clocked and outputs both analogue and digital via optical outs. Sound is amazing.
could you do a review of the RME Fireface UCXII. It's usb 2 but has AES/EBU. curious about ethernet for the home studio interface. Thanks! great videos.
Thank you, I was trying to figure out how to have a set up for me and two others at the same time. We figured we would get ER M for output clock, and iconnectmidi4+ for input midi recording. This video has cleared up most of my theories. Broke midi down really well.
Hey! The inside speakers are Adam A7X (soon to be used with stereo Adam subs, video coming in a few weeks) and the outside ones are Studiospares SN10s (copies of the NS10 that work just fine for what I want them for)
Amazing video. I have a similar setup with an RME Babyface, Alesis AI3 and a Korg Soundlink 168. Only the korg has word clock input and it has 4 adat in&out. So would it work nicely as a word clock? I'm using the AI3 to sum 8 stereo tracks to an analog desk and then record the Stereo output. Since this is an old video I'm not expecting an answer but thanks for the tips in the video!
Very well explained mate, really apreciated your time. Litle question for you. I mix on the box, and im tring with not succed to slave Logic X to Ableton in the most accurate way. Ive tried some plugs and m4l devices but are not precised. You get drifts and pitch changes noises. I have an Audient 14. Can you please hook me with some advice? big thanks!
Then I'm wondering why high end Network Audio Adapters (Such as those by Sonore and SOtM) go to so much trouble with their clocks? SOtM 200-Ultra network streamer even has a connector for a rubidium clock. If the DAC is always doing the timing, this seems like a waste to me.
Network audio and USB audio are very different, and you’re misunderstanding what the clock is for. The clock is used to convert the digital data to analog smoothly, but USB has to send packets of data over first, to be read and decoded at a speed determined by the DAC clock- the USB connection just provides a store of data to work from
That helps...last question -- what is the clock within the network player responsible for? It's receiving a stream and sending to the DAC via USB. Appreciate it.
Was looking at the Antelope Audio 10MX which has a word clock in and the Antelope Audio OCX HD which has an atomic input. Are these two items pretty much the same thing? Would a person choose one or the other? or are they meant to work hand in hand?
The OCX seems like a really decent master clock, the 10MX is like the ultimate upgrade of a rubidium Atomic Clock (plus the features of the ocx, but at a higher cost). I’m not saying it’s bull, but you’d better be willing to spend half a million on your room treatment, cabling layout, other equipment and such before this makes an audible difference. Just my two cents. Also the 10MX would be useless unless the equipment it’s driving has a 10MHz clock input, like some of the Antelope converters
hey man I have a question. So i have an audient id 22 and i just purchased an external mic preamp and i'm thinking of getting a stand alone converter and my question is would i need a master clock and also would i need a stand alone converter to see any more increase of sound quality compared to just having the id22 and and an external preamp and a good mic if i had one of those too.
Stick to just the id22. That's a big waste of money. The ID22 already has preamps. It already has converters, and it already has a word clock, why would you need two of each of those things?
Hi i try to Connect (s/pdif) from luna ll creamware to motu ultrlite.. I want to sound from motu so if i play on computer its Work.. When i open in ableton cubase or any hardware its not Work.. No signal out from s/pdif.. What to do how setup this.?
Hey! I also got a Raydat solution with 16 ad/da connected to an analogue console and the Octamic II. I sync via Steadyclock adat, when i use my Raydat as master i end i get the lock/sync toggle and i hear the Jitter very clearly. But when using the Octamic as master its all steady. Should i upgrade to a Master clock module and use coaxial to get better performance? is it worth it?
Hey Mads. If all sounds well when using the Octamic as the master, i'm not sure you'll hear any improvement from adding a master clock to the mix. Not least because then you'd have to buy the Wordclock Option for the RayDAT so you can sync them both off the same master clock - otherwise you'd be runnning the octamic only off the master clock, defeating the point. I personally bought the WCO wordclock add in card for the RayDAT, and I use that (which has two coax wordclock outs) to sync my studio now.
Hi. I have an RME UCX and a Quad mic pre, also RME. And thats it! I dont have other converters, other devices... Do i need a word clock like a black lion mkII to make my conversion better?
Absolutely you need a clock, you may use them connect with DAT and use one of the devise clock, but much better if you run them from an external timing. The sound is much clear and blowing like magic.
@@elephantreal9598 so do I connect my a/d to my audio interface via spidif or adat to bypass my audio interface's converters? if so How will I hear what I'm recording?
So you recommend an external word clock in most cases. I’m running a home system which uses a Mac Mini 2012 i7 to an sotm sms-200 Ultra SE via ethernet with a Pink Faun galvanic isolator. This goes to a Mytek Brooklyn a d outputs to HP or my McIntosh C220 tube preamp . Then on to tube amps. Wich clock would you use for control, the sotm, Brooklyn or an external word-clock, perhaps the sotm offering. You seem to be able to answer such a question with authority. Thanks so much.
Go on then, get going! It’s such a hard thing to show because beyond error rates, it’s a perceptual thing that couldn’t be replicated on a consumer device like a laptop or phone, especially through audio compression
I've cut the red wire on mi cable so no power...and Check here I still have some noise no so big but it's there...do (iFi iPurifier3 Filtre de signal audio et de données USB) will corect that? soundcloud.com/hibou53/usb-noise
Sorry, I'm no wiser.. How does the clock affect the notes? As in a music track, not all notes are played at the same time so why would you use a clock to sync the notes?
The clock is not related to the notes, it’s much finer than that, it’s on a sub-millisecond basis. It makes all the digital gear change samples at the same time to prevent clicks and dropouts
that comparison between rowing a boat and master clocking was genius. super great example, thank you it really helped!

I love your initial explanation of the coxwain. That was great man.
in one video you explaind what my tutor could not in 3 days..thanks! much love
this was super helpful , couldnt find anything about video clocking but this got the job done. thank you!
Very in depth and useful. Thanks dude
The explanation of this was perfect, well done!
Great explanation!! I´m not fluent in English but I could understand it!
thanks dude!
Thanks for this. Needed info about digital clocking and your explanation is easy to understand.
Thanks for the info! That helps to understand the set up and what device should look for!

Not really- unless you can convince RME to send one over to me! They don’t really send out review units that I know of..

So on a DAC with asynchronous USB, the timing is ignored from the source (in my case a NAS audio computer -- microRendu)??
Asynchronous is only about data transfer, nothing more. The “timing” is determined by the DAC in every case.

Hi Hector- short answer no, the iD22 doesn’t have a word clock input. 😐

So how do you sync video with audio for music videos or scoring?
Drop a copy of the video file into your DAW- alternatively get your daw synced to external SMPTE input- that’s separate from audio clocking
so do I connect my a/d to my audio interface via spidif or adat to bypass my audio interface's converters? if so How will I hear what I'm recording?
Use ADAT lightpipe optical if you can rather than SPDIF. Does your interface have FireWire? If so use that.
