I remember riding my bike to school when it was pouring down. Of course we had the special rain suits but we most of the time were too stubborn to wear them with the result being soaking wet by the time we arrived at school. Often it took hours before we were dry again, lol. Never melted though. We survived. And we got wet again riding our bikes back home in the afternoon. But at least mom was waiting for us with a nice warm drink.
i heard that saying a couple of times as well, growing up. and I hated it. and i still like cycling. i was quite happy with rain jacket and rain pants for the last years (once i had good gear). now i will try a good poncho. and although many bicyclers here are with no real rain gear (from the looks) i think you should get good rain gear. it's worth it (and still much cheaper than a car; for yourself and for society). i was happy to see a couple of "poncho-people", too :D thanks for all your great vids, bicycle dutch uploader!

Cycling in the rain is a true test of your commitment in the UK. My first (and only drop to date) happend last Autumn. Did a complete 360 and landed on my back, it was raining. I lay there for a bit contemplating if I should be doing this. One year later I'm still going. 😊

This morning. The bikebox at my factory are nearly empty. "it is raining " my collegues said. I answered "My 4 year old son driven to scholl with me this morning. At the bike. With short trousers"
The other side of being seen is to see. I used to get off work at 3 AM and drive down this very winding, unlit road. It seemed strange to me that I could see well while walking to my car, but while driving it was impossible to see the road beyond my headlights. So one night, with no cars in sight, I turned off my lights. Within seconds I could see far into the distance, until a car's headlights came into view and it all turned dark again. With rain, the glare off the road makes this worse.
Very good city infrastructure .Here in my country everytime when i go cycling i'm risking my life because we don't have good roads and the drivers don't respect is.
Every person in a car in The Netherland is also a person who is on a bike often. That makes every driver more respectful towards the cylists and more patient. Because they all know what it is like being on a bike

We have no helmets because it simple not required by law. There are numerous reasons for it. Tests have shown we tend to drive faster when people wear helmets. Wich makes it unsafe. (The testteam thought it was someting psychological.) It also makes us take the car more often, and we want to use the bike more, do we? An other reason is we have such a safe road system, hardly any accidents occur, wich is amazing when you think about it. Also when you hit a bike as a car driver, you are ALWAYS at fault as a driver. When the biker had done some reckless behaviour, they will use the posibility of mitigating circumstances, but the blame falls on you when taken to court. And you don't want that, so you are naturaly are more careful with bikers, to that when you drive at one point you were a biker yourself so you just know.. Last thing is in my experience when I did fall for instance when I got cut of or the snow was to slippery under my tires, I have never ever fallen on my head. Always on my hands and knees or bottom. Maybe it's because were so good at it we develloped a kind of way to know how to fall when it happens or maybe it's because our bikes ar in a more upright position wich makes you fall sideways instead of over your handlebars, I wouldn't know realy. The only way you could get hurt on the head, I think is hitting frontaly on a car and launch in the air onto the hood or over the car. And with safety rules that hardly ever happens. luckily!
You are so right!!! I'm Spaniard but I'm alarmed about so wrong are Mexicans trying to expand the use of bicycles in their cities. Instead of inverting in infrastructures (special parking places and bike paths or lanes) they want to press riders imposing the mandatory use of helmets and safe reflective vests, just the opposite way. Who wants to carry on his hands a helmet and a vest in his daily tasks once his bicycle is parked on the street? To us that's nothing special at all. It happens it all the time.Yes,it is kind but most of all just plain old common sence to make sure the driver can get up to speed again.Trying to do that from a stand still position when you have a passenger is hard and she knows it.
I still remember a few years back, when I was about 12 years old. I drove on my bicycle trough a park. And suddenly I slipped and made a 180. That was seriously painfull, even the ambulance had to come to me (Lucky they could). Though it didn't stop me from using my bicycle again and again for many more years to come in the rain.
Hills inside cities and rain must be important factors about the scarce use of bicycles in Spain, where 90% of bikes used in cities are mountain models without mudguards. Yes, you can install them or buying commuting relaxed models but it's easier not to use the bicycle during those days and that is exactly what happens.
It definitely plays a part, but in the Netherlands we have some hilly cities as well. And in Nijmegen fe, there are mainly many bridges, but most people still cycle in the rain

No David, there are not less cyclists when it rains. Dutch infrastructure is designed for cyclists and pedestrians especially in the city even when there's a lot of construction going on.
one of the problems of drivers not seeing cyclists is when they are both on parallel roads and the driver has to make a right turn....we changed our bike paths to curve into the right way and curve back parallel...so by the time the driver turned to the intersecting street he has allready had to turn at least 45degrees (if not the full 90 deg on spacious roads) before intersecting the bikepath and always will be seeing any oncoming cyclists. the biggest problem nowadays is drivers checking their smartphones....
I am so happy I never have to cycle in the rain again, as I now finally own a car. Though, back then I complained a lot. Now I am actually starting to miss it. It just has a certain vibe to it xD
A lot more hand signals to be seen in this one, but I'm still surprised at how many of those nice, big headlights aren't on. Maybe it wasn't actually as dark as it seems? On the other hand, I just leave mine on all the time, so I'm silly about having my light on.
The Netherlands is very flat, the only mountain we have here is actually a hill, but we call it a mountain. I hope this answers your question! :) (also more than half of the Netherlands is below sea level)

In a country with more bikes then people you will find all sorts of bicycles. Trikes, There are bikes for handicapped people. Bikes that are propelled by hand, cargo bikes. Bikes designed for speed and bikes designed for off road use. Just go through some of the videos posted by bicycleDutch. You will see bikes for all purposes. Doesn't surprise me. But It could still be safer, whenever I ride without a helmet my head feels like a Chinese pot and I havent fallen off my bike whilst commuting for >15 years. More personal than a comment on safety, as my skull is made of bone, not pot.

Depends. Umbrellas are for the rain rather then for the wind and are more optional then standard. With a strong wind we leave the umbrella at home and just put on a raincoat. Wind is more a factor outside cities then inside the city. In case of extreme wind, people will take quicker the bus/car but still lot of people will use the bicycle or just stay inside. Depends really where you live and how long you need to travel to get where you want to be. Even with snow etc we bike. Cycling in the snow, Den Bosch (Netherlands) Cycling in the snow, Utrecht (Netherlands) Wind is really the only"limitator"for biking, as we really on muscle power to get us going.

I do not see cyclists with earphones. Over here, lots of cyclists listen to music and in my opinion that is dangerous because they somehow do not hear what happens around them. How about that in the Netherlands?

Looking over the shoulder when changing direction is normal to me (and my children) and always necessary in cycle-city Groningen (Netherlands) because of fast bikers and cars with right of way. Normal folks on normal bicycles, a pleasure to look at when all you normally see is kids and thuggish youths on bikes often far to small for them made for of road use. Or the other type seem to be on bikes built for some kind of racing or competition cycling, and in the most weird kind of multi coloured clothing completely unsuited to normal riding.
Dont be. It's because the chance for getting a ticket for it is minimal. But those people don't realize enough that they are putting their own lives at risk.
Why are there so many women's bikes in this video, even ones being ridden by men? Women's frames are inherently inferior (geometrically weaker) to a standard double-triangle frame, and they don't even have a reason to exist anymore, since even women who still frequently wear dresses/skirts don't tend to wear them while riding a bike (except maybe for e.g., Pentecostal women).
That is a very old-fashioned view on types of bicycles and very uncommon in the Netherlands. The step-through frame is just much more convenient to mount and dismount and that type of bicycle is therefore used by all sorts of people.

A triangle is the strongest geometric shape and a girl's frame is missing the main triangle. That means it has to be significantly heavier than an otherwise identical double-triangle frame in order to achieve a certain level of strength, due to the inherently weak design. They came into existence not because they were an example of good engineering (they're not; far from it), but rather, to accommodate skirts and dresses, which most women exclusively wore at the time. You'd have to be pretty lazy to be inconvenienced by stepping over a top tube. Imagine if you had to get on a horse. That would be a nightmare, right?
I've never seen a bike's frame break in half. I've heard bikes are made of pretty weak material in other countries? But the steel of a regular Dutch bicycle can probably cary three people with ease. And people can wear whatever when biking. Long dresses have become less common here in general, but they're still worn by all sorts of people. Can't imagine changing clothes just for a bike ride. And lastly, of course, hitting one's balls on a crossbar is the worst ;p
I would hate to be on one of those types of bikes while doing canyon and mountain cycling. I wouldn't last 5 minutes on those brutal bikes. I love my mountain bike.
This type of bike (sitting straight) is used for a more a relaxing type of cycling. It is used to get from A to B and not typically to get a sweaty work-out. So you sit more comfortably and ride a bit slower then on a mountain bike (so you don't sweat so much haha). And my back won't hurt so much 😉. But I love riding in my moutain bike on special MTB routes.
The last thing I can stand is a densely packed city with a lot of people but no sounds of them talking. What do you guys do over there? Do you have the ability to read peoples minds or are Dutch people just boring and not talkative in general. Just watch a random video of an American city and you'll see what I mean.
Morning Rush Hour in pouring rain. People are on their way to school or work. So why talk ? When i watch a random video of an American city i see a huge SMOG cloud and i hear the sounds broom broom. Yeah, you Americans think you're so perfect.
Cycling is that one moment for yourself, kind of like meditating or thinking about life in the shower. And it’s raining, so on a bike you would have to scream to each other. And it rains, which means you want to get inside asap. Nothing to do with boring, just a mindset
Vilmos Magyar Because if you buy an expensive bike there's a big chance someone will try to steal it. That's why the Dutch prefer to buy cheaper bikes that no one would bother stealing.
It needs to last for 10-15 years preferable with minimal need for maintenance. so its much better to have a sturdy little 3 speed bike then a light race bike or a mountain bike. those are simply not the right tool for the job of getting from A to B reliably and cheap
Ugly maybe.... shitty not necessarily. For people in cities where biking is a way of life tend to see the bike as a tool. So most bikes sold are not racers or fancy mountain bikes, it is bikes that are useful in cities. Bikes that last long without maintenance, that are comfortable to ride day in and day out, and that are fast enough in a city environment while being able to carry stuff - whether its shopping, work-related shit, your kids, etc. With flashy bikes you often dont get all this, while also having to worry about thieves. These bikes are more practical and you can safely leave them outside when you visit someone, go shopping, go to the movies, go training or whatever.

I wonder if the land is flatter in the Netherlands. Here we have many Hills some of them steep. Nevertheless it is possible to Bicycle here.

There is a traffic light system in some places at intersections that during rain cyclists have less waiting time at the crossings. cars wait longer.

Doesn't surprise me. But It could still be safer, whenever I ride without a helmet my head feels like a Chinese pot and I havent fallen off my bike whilst commuting for >15 years. More personal than a comment on safety, as my skull is made of bone, not pot.

It is a cultural issue. Here in Brazil few bikers wear helmets. Others do not.
You don't often see cyclists with a umbrella, could be a bit dangerous if you had to suddenly stop and if there was any wind could through you off balance, I certainly would not go out in the rain with a umbrella when cycling Do they still go out cycling to work in a storm force 8 wind?.
Depends. Umbrellas are for the rain rather then for the wind and are more optional then standard. With a strong wind we leave the umbrella at home and just put on a raincoat. Wind is more a factor outside cities then inside the city. In case of extreme wind, people will take quicker the bus/car but still lot of people will use the bicycle or just stay inside. Depends really where you live and how long you need to travel to get where you want to be. Even with snow etc we bike.

Wind is really the only"limitator"for biking, as we really on muscle power to get us going.
+Alan Morr Dutch city bikes often have backwheel brakes, so people do not use their hands to brake - in Switzerland, only children have that type of brakes; I prefer a good rain coat and trousers.

I do not see cyclists with earphones. Over here, lots of cyclists listen to music and in my opinion that is dangerous because they somehow do not hear what happens around them. How about that in the Netherlands?
+HelenaRG71 Many cyclists overhere do listen to music, I keep my volume low and stay on the right side. Looking over the shoulder when changing direction is normal to me (and my children) and always necessary in cycle-city Groningen (Netherlands) because of fast bikers and cars with right of way. I think internetting on bikes is getting more and more dangerous.

Normal folks on normal bicycles, a pleasure to look at when all you normally see is kids and thuggish youths on bikes often far to small for them made for of road use. Or the other type seem to be on bikes built for some kind of racing or competition cycling, and in the most weird kind of multi coloured clothing completely unsuited to normal riding.

no ebikes, all normal Holland bikes, in Germany most of them Alle ebikes and u barely see bikes in rain, actually zero bikes, i think it is only me XD
Well this bike scenery is from 11 years ago, unfortunately today there are a lot of ebikes in the NL as well, people are lazy.

Why are there so many women's bikes in this video, even ones being ridden by men? Women's frames are inherently inferior (geometrically weaker) to a standard double-triangle frame, and they don't even have a reason to exist anymore, since even women who still frequently wear dresses/skirts don't tend to wear them while riding a bike (except maybe for e.g., Pentecostal women).
That is a very old-fashioned view on types of bicycles and very uncommon in the Netherlands. The step-through frame is just much more convenient to mount and dismount and that type of bicycle is therefore used by all sorts of people.

I didn't post a "view", I posted facts, and there's no such thing as an "old-fashioned" fact. A triangle is the strongest geometric shape and a girl's frame is missing the main triangle. That means it has to be significantly heavier than an otherwise identical double-triangle frame in order to achieve a certain level of strength, due to the inherently weak design. They came into existence not because they were an example of good engineering (they're not; far from it), but rather, to accommodate skirts and dresses, which most women exclusively wore at the time.
You'd have to be pretty lazy to be inconvenienced by stepping over a top tube. Imagine if you had to get on a horse. That would be a nightmare, right?

I've never seen a bike's frame break in half. I've heard bikes are made of pretty weak material in other countries? But the steel of a regular Dutch bicycle can probably cary three people with ease.
And people can wear whatever when biking. Long dresses have become less common here in general, but they're still worn by all sorts of people. Can't imagine changing clothes just for a bike ride.
And lastly, of course, hitting one's balls on a crossbar is the worst ;p

I would hate to be on one of those types of bikes while doing canyon and mountain cycling. I wouldn't last 5 minutes on those brutal bikes. I love my mountain bike.
This type of bike (sitting straight) is used for a more a relaxing type of cycling. It is used to get from A to B and not typically to get a sweaty work-out. So you sit more comfortably and ride a bit slower then on a mountain bike (so you don't sweat so much haha). And my back won't hurt so much 😉. But I love riding in my moutain bike on special MTB routes.
Ok, so you already have the bike that fits you. Now start using it for shopping, transport, and commuting.

Ugly maybe.... shitty not necessarily. For people in cities where biking is a way of life tend to see the bike as a tool. So most bikes sold are not racers or fancy mountain bikes, it is bikes that are useful in cities. Bikes that last long without maintenance, that are comfortable to ride day in and day out, and that are fast enough in a city environment while being able to carry stuff - whether its shopping, work-related shit, your kids, etc.
With flashy bikes you often dont get all this, while also having to worry about thieves. These bikes are more practical and you can safely leave them outside when you visit someone, go shopping, go to the movies, go training or whatever.
The ugly bikes don't get stolen as fast as the class a bikes.
